Rating: 3.5/5 (rounded up to 4)
I have to say, even having read the first book, I did not see the twists and turns in this story coming. Wow, what personality shifts. Talk about unleashing your hidden qualities! Erin sums it up perfectly in the blurb: vengeance will be had.
Following on from book 1, where Alicia (FMC) arrives at the mansion of her soon-to-be (arranged) husband's family home only to discover their dark magic secret, book 2 of the Night Coven Duet begins the hunt for Alicia's missing mum and unravels further secrets about James' (MMC) family/power. With wild twists, blind bends and plenty of gore, this is definitely a page-turner.
My two favourite aspects of this book are: a) Alicia taking control and shrugging off her small-town, innocent persona. By very quickly learning to control the dark magic, gods and demons presented to her, she is a force to be reckoned with. b) Getting to see inside James’ head far more than in book 1 as a result of the honesty vow they both took. The character development for him is brilliant to see and I really enjoyed exploring the motivations behind his aggressive, dominant personality.
Equally, there are two aspects of book 2 that took the shine off my love of book 1 for me, and both are down to person preference: a) I say this as a dedicated smut reader, but the smut does come a little too thick and fast in this book for me. I reached the point of almost forgetting the plot in the middle. That said, things picked up again and it was a brilliant (if slightly rushed) ending. b) There is little explanation for Alicia’s actions. If I hadn’t read in the blurb that dark magic influenced her, I would have just assumed she was having a mental health crisis off the back of her mum going missing.
Lovers of domination smut, this book is definitely for you. Expect short, but frequent and explicitly detailed, filthy scenes that will have you turning your page away from the little old lady on the bus. The dark aspects (and there are plenty) are restricted to the plot side of things, so I wouldn't label this a dark romance in the kinky sense, but there is more than enough blood and death available to keep even the most twisted going.
Overall, I really enjoyed this series and (especially as both books are so short) would recommend them for all lovers of spice in a world of dark and twisted fantasy.
For transparency, I was delighted to receive this as an e-ARC copy ahead of its release.
