He’s her anchor. She’s his life preserver.

Maxine Dawson is pretending. She’s pretending to be excited for her best friend’s impending wedding, pretending her plans don’t involve moving back in with her parents, pretending she can move on from her past. Mostly, she’s been pretending that she’s been okay since her fiancé, Ethan, died.

Cain Hazelton is many things, but he is not pretending. Everyone knows about his short fuse, his preference for seclusion, that he only lets himself care about one person - his Grams.

When Max and Cain’s worlds collide, they gravitate toward each other for different reasons. For Max, Cain shuts down her constant flood of emotions and for Cain, Max makes him feel his emotions for the first time in his life. But before they can find their happiness they must overcome their pasts, their fears, and a take a chance on love.

The way Cain and Max healed each other and the support Ethan’s family gave her was so beautiful. I personally would not have been able to forgive Ellie as easily as Max did, any of the times she opened her big mouth. This book broke my heart and then put it back together.

This is the 1st story in the Love in Motion Series where we get to meet Maxine trying to function after her fiancé, Ethan passed away and his twin is her best friend getting married. When the girls spend a month prior to the wedding in Ethan’s home town Maxine pretends to be happy until she accidentally meets a handsome man, Cain who only wants to live in his own misery after his past. Cain becomes taken with Maxine and sees that she’s dealing with pain and it’s beautiful to see how they become friends, then more even though others believe Cain is nothing but trouble. Cain is thankful for his Grams who’s raised him and doesn’t let him hide in his past mistakes. When Cain’s heart starts to open up he’s shocked to feel kindness, happiness and love and it scares him. When Cain seeks help from his uncontrollable temper and those actions Maxine gives him the time. Wonderful story showing you by not dealing with your trauma can cause you problems in life keeping you from living a life with friends, happiness and Love!!

The author did a good job of letting us look deep into feelings of the two troubled main characters. It was nice to see them trying to overcome their past traumas together. I particularly liked the attitude Cain had about Max’s previous fiancé. I also liked the personality of the supportive grandmother.

I know many people wouldn’t even notice, but I found all of the cursing to be distracting. Like one of the secondary characters, I prefer not to hear it.

This was my first time reading a Liz Ashlee book and I was not disappointed. I will be back for more. 😍

Max and Cain's story will take you through the different ways people grieve.

Max and Cain lean on each other and are able to find happiness and love again.

the book just kind of make me feel emotional, sadness especially... i think the execution went a little far on the grief of the characters etc. so even when the characters got together and were happy, the "happiness" factor wasn't conveyed to me as a reader. it was kind of like waiting for the other shoe to drop and it might turn into anguish again etc.
