The three core principles underpinning Richard's philosophy are communication, empowerment and impact. He argues that great leadership is first and foremost about serving the needs of the people who work for you. His mantra: systems and structures change nothing; people do.
Having successfully transitioned from teacher to thought leader, Richard has had the opportunity to regularly advise governments and major corporations globally, including Google, Visa, Microsoft, Morgan Stanley, Deloitte, Harrods, Puig and Telefonica. His unique experience and insight into realising human potential also see him working in elite sport, with Olympic and Paralympic coaches, EPL Soccer coaches, England Golf and professional cricket teams. He has recently started working with the British music industry to help develop a capacity for forward, proactive and sustainable change.
Richard is also a bestselling author. His first book, Creating Tomorrow’s Schools Today (now in its second edition), has become a seminal text around the world for those engaged in the transformation of education. His other books are explorations of human potential, leadership and success. In Change and Simple Thinking, Richard explores the world beyond school, through the eyes of an educator. Both have received critical and public success; both achieving global bestseller status. All his books have been translated into a multitude of languages including Spanish, Chinese and Korean.
Most importantly, Richard is always humbled to be able to share his lifelong commitment to living, learning and laughing.
This is a particularly great, easy read for anyone involved or interested in working within education.
I am generally a little dubious of 'self help' books, and this one is definitely marketed as one. However, it is highly recommended by the great educationalist Sir Ken Robinson and so I was curious to see whether it could illuminate anything before I embark within the world of education. Richard Gerver uses his own experiences as constant examples of how to embrace life changes which could be seen as quite irritating at times, especially as he has come from a privileged background. However, this book is a wonderful example of how privilege does not have to equal self-righteousness. Gerver has a very open and healthy state of mind which makes reading this book a pleasure. The most interesting thing he sheds light on is how we are all born natural learners, with an instinctive curiosity. It is only as we grow older that we often become more complacent and lazy and find it harder to admit that there are things we don't know (and therefore find it harder to learn). There is undoubtedly much more academic books on this subject so it is nice to read it in this much more simple, self-help format.
Richard Gerver, a local lad, changed a failing school, threatened with closure into a thriving, flagship for the UK. He clearly understands the need for change and how to achieve, as evidenced through his actions and his explanations in this book. Change is threatening. Threats create fear. Fear stifles effort and progress unless properly controlled and chanelled. Change shows us how to do this. Great book.
No me gustó.
Loy Machedo's Book Review - Change by Richard Gerver
If there is an endorsement by Sir Ken Robinson (Element, Finding your Element), You can bet your life I will pick up that book. And it was this very reason I decided to pickup Richard Gerver's 'Change'.

What I personally loved about the book was the lack of self Aggrandization that most authors resort to hold on to while preaching their value systems. Instead the author choose to take the more difficult path of bearing his soul, his failures and his insecurities on his journey towards Change.
Were there any drawbacks to the books? Well for the strangest reason, I wished he had put some pictures of himself, his school and his struggles.
Overall, Change can be described as an enjoyable, easy to read book you can complete in a few hours and which gives you fodder for thought.
I saw Richard Gerver speaking and he was a really good speaker and inspiring too although I also found him a little bit too 'motivational speaker'... And I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book - I thought it might be a bit cheesy (which now and again it is)- but actually it's also quite inspiring and pretty helpful about how to embrace change, to be a good leader and to inspire other people too, and generally about being a better person at work, to be true to yourself and to work to your strengths. This is all good stuff, especially if the place where you work is restructuring (which mine is)... it kind of makes you think that everything is going to be ok. kinda.
At first I thought I couldn't benefit from it since the writer was talking about his own change experience at the UK's educational system, but after carrying on I came across many approaches could benefit my self and others around me professionally and personally.
i thought this book supposedly written in general situations but the writer keep on telling about his own experiences as a teacher (a great one, if i may). for now i cant apply any of the "advices" or "tips" into my chaotic life. may be i will return to this book later and give it a 2nd chance.
