This is a very nicely done book that pays tribute to Rocky Horror Picture show, one of my favorite films. The book tells the story (Very briefly) of the play as well as some of the making of the movie and tries to explain why the film has become such a huge cult classic. The book is peppered with trivia bits throughout and includes some materials such as an invitation to host your own party, a mini poster and some temporary tattoos. The book is very brief and not something I would have gone out and purchased, but the images depicted are excellent and the information is great. There are also buttons you can press on the side that play clips from several songs from the film. This is a great gift for a Rocky Horror fan, just not one that I would want in my own book collection since it took me such a short time to read.
This also included musical clips and some bonus items (a how-to guide for the Time Warp, a poster and a few other things). There are also a bunch of gorgeous photos throughout.
You should know going in that this book is only 50 pages, so it's definitely for the serious collector only. You should probably also know that most of the "Did you know?" facts are things that you probably do know. (If you love Rocky Horror enough to buy/ask for a 50-page book just because it's something RHPS-related that you don't already have, you probably know a lot of arcane trivia about it.)
Even so, this book is a great deal of fun and I loved the musical clips and photos. (There were some behind-the-scenes ones I hadn't seen before.)
Ultimately, I know this review doesn't matter. You either love the movie or you don't, and either way, you don't need any advice to know whether or not you want it. I'm not sure this is something I'll read more than once, but I definitely wouldn't be surprised if I look at the pictures and play the songs on a regular basis.
It also definitely made me miss the movie, and I hope to rewatch it sometime soon.
"It was great when it all began. I was a regular Frankie fan . . ." Last month marked the 40th anniversary of the film, and I cannot believe that I have held a special place in my heart for this movie for 36 years! I was a total groupie and would go every weekend to the Sunday 4pm show (I was only 14 and not allowed to do midnight) in Uniondale, quite a few towns from Massapequa. My friend Camille and I would beg rides, hitchhike, or ride the LIRR without paying until we got kicked off to get there, and then we'd do the same thing to get back. My grandmother even made me a complete Columbia costume. Damn, I would kill to have a photo of me in it (this is why I scrapbook everything because my mother documented nothing!). The Rocky Horror Picture Show made me feel that it was okay to be different, no, that you should celebrate being different. "Don't dream it, be it." This book is short and sweet, and gets four stars because it made me happily nostalgic, and I realize that I must take my children to a midnight show in Manhattan very, very soon.
Excellent treasury of Rocky Horror, from the stage show to the movie... and beyond. Great for any Rocky Horror enthusiast. Oh, and cool goodies with the book!
