I was an ARC reader of Grimmgard: Old Wounds.
I so enjoyed reading this book. The story follows Axia, a rogue Slayer, as she finds herself on the run from those who seek her life. On her journey, she forms an unlikely alliance with Cassius, a knight bound by honor, and together they confront dangerous conspirators who plan to overthrow the kingdom.

One of the aspects I most enjoyed was uncovering the rich backstories of the characters, particularly Axia’s. Her painful history, shaped by abuse at the hands of her father, has forced Axia to gain strength and always work to prove herself. What’s especially compelling is how her past intertwines with the present, as her abuser is at the heart of the conspiracy.

The world-building is another highlight. The settings and lore create a vivid backdrop for the story. There are a lot of well written fight scenes, and they all serve a purpose, especially how they show Axia’s power of Chaos and how she doesn’t let it overtake her.

I highly recommend this book to fans of dark fantasy and those new to the genre.

Grimmgard: Old Wounds marks the start of another series in the dark fantasy world of Grimmgard. It tells the tale of Axia, a rogue monster hunter, who discovers that the very evil she hunts also lives within her. The rest of the book unveils a story of facing her inner demons and bringing accountability to the ones who put them there.

J. Dickinson presents an incredible Woman Scorned story from start to finish. His book is embellished with agonizing flashbacks, gory battles, and a tense romantic subplot that pairs perfectly with the main character's emotional rollercoaster. The book dives deep into inner thoughts and conflicts, which keep us connected with the characters' motivations and goals through every twist and turn. Highly recommended for fans of dark fantasy, especially those who like some horror elements mixed in.

Grimmgard: Old Wounds is another great entry into the world and the peoples therein. Axia is an intriguing FMC in that her past didn't turn her bitter. I appreciated the slowness and hesitance in the growth between her and Cassius. The descriptions of the world are on par with other stories from this world. If you like stories where the main character is forced on the run and must find a new family, then I think you'll like this entry into the Grimmgard series.

"Grimmgard: Old Wounds" by J. Dickinson met all my expectations. The story revolves around Axia and Cassius, two compelling characters who are polar opposites but they complement each other as they embark on a journey to uncover profound truths about themselves and others they know.

Axia and Cassius have a great dynamic. The slow-building tension is tastefully executed, culminating in an emotional payoff that left me weak in the knees. The world-building is exceptional. Terrifying monsters and expertly written battle scenes keep the tension high, while the well-placed flashbacks and subtle foreshadowing add emotional depth. I felt every emotion following Axia on her journey. I felt like a protective big sister. Her inner dialogue is especially powerful, allowing readers to connect deeply with her, making her journey feel very personal and immersive.

This novel evokes a spectrum of emotions. I laughed, cried happy and sad tears, felt anger, hope, and was even scared. "Grimmgard: Old Wounds" feels like stepping into a live-action role-playing game, making it impossible to put down. It hooks you from the very first page and doesn’t let go. I 100% recommend it to anyone who loves dark fantasy.
