I Wish the Rainbow Bridge Had Visiting Hours: A Veterinarian's Memoir of Love, Life, and Letting Go

Rate this book
Step into a world where every wagging tail tells a story, every woof echoes love, and every paw print leaves an indelible mark on the heart. It's more than a tale of tails; it's a testament to the transformative power of unconditional love by Dr. Brian E. Joseph.***

Welcome to a heartwarming journey through a life enriched by the wagging tails and wet noses of man's best friend. This memoir is a love letter to the furry companions who have padded alongside the author, sharing life's ups and downs, joys and sorrows. Each chapter unfolds another paw print on the heart, another tale of devotion, mischief, and the unparalleled bond between dogs and their humans.

From the adorable Splash who despised rain but loved cozy indoor afternoons, to a dynamic pack that captured the essence of friendship and leadership, every story is a testament to how these four-legged wonders touch our lives in deeply meaningful ways.

Beyond the tail-wagging adventures, the book delves into the emotionally complex and ethically responsible decisions surrounding pet euthanasia. Our commitment to these loving creatures, the author asserts, extends "from the animal’s cradle to the grave." The biblical notion of "dominion over animals" is reframed as a lifelong responsibility to protect, love, and when the time comes, to let go humanely.

You'll also meet the family and friends whose lives have been forever changed by their interactions with these incredible animals. Whether it's Wendy and Chris navigating the comedy of a beach trip gone awry, or Zack finding his life's calling nurtured by his childhood furry friends, each perspective adds another layer to the rich tapestry of relationships that only a life with dogs can weave.

As the author reminisces about the irreplaceable moments and lessons learned from each wag, woof, and lick, he wraps readers in the comforting thought that these dogs, whether they're bounding around the yard or have crossed the rainbow bridge, continue to make us better people. They transform houses into homes filled with unconditional love and incessant joy.

So come along for this sentimental ride, a perfect read for anyone who has ever felt the unspoken connection with a pet. This book celebrates not just the lives of these wonderful dogs, but the life that they breathe into each one of us.

Thank you for letting us share this journey with you. May your life be as enriched by reading these stories as the author's has been by living them. Enjoy! 🐾

In "I Wish the Rainbow Bridge Had Visiting Hours," Dr. Brian E. Joseph invites readers into a heartfelt journey filled with the wagging tails and warm hearts of beloved dogs🐕. I was surprised to find myself swept up in Dr. Joseph's tales of canine companionship. His writing is warm, engaging, and full of heart, and his stories of Peppermander and the gang are a joy to read. He writes about the quirks, the charms, and the sheer joy of life with a pack of dogs, creating a narrative that's both entertaining and endearing.

A beautiful, uplifting book that will leave you feeling grateful for the furry friends in your life. The humour feels effortless and sincere. Even non-dog lovers will find moments to relate to, smile at, and quietly cherish💖🐾

A veterinarian’s heartwarming journey of dog joy and human love

Veterinarian Dr. Brian Joseph has been entrusted with caring for innumerable animals during his career, ranging from small terriers he jokingly nicknames “terrierizers,” to marine mammals like beluga whales, and primates as large as gorillas. But out of all of Dr. Brian’s animal encounters, his most treasured experiences are drawn from his beloved pack of dogs, his cherished wife and sons, and his rich collection of family and friends. After a near-death experience, Dr. Brian concludes that if he does not write his stories down, they will simply pass away with him one day. This, the first book in a planned series, leads the reader through Dr. Brian’s humble beginnings and dog-less childhood to his dream of becoming a veterinarian; and to his eventual good fortune of parenting a pack of faithful, furry family members. Peppermander, his beloved Bernese Mountain Dog, takes center stage.

A full-circle text, Dr. Brian’s memoir is at once a tender tribute to canines, a proclamation of adoration for his wife and human pack, a gentle framing of mortality, and a clinic in the humane obligations attached to dog ownership. Dr. Brian delivers interesting historical musings of “furever” families with masterful storytelling, humor, and heart. He reflects on his numerous animal encounters, shortcomings, dog bliss, and the hardest thing we’ll do in life: say goodbye. As an honorary member of Dr. Brian’s pack, the reader will quickly catch on to playful nicknames, pack jargon, dog conversations, and endless jokes. You will laugh, cry, and experience hard truths about life in an easy way that reassures you that everything will be OK.

For anyone who has been touched by a dog’s pure love, who cherishes simple life pleasures, or who enjoys a good story (or many), Dr. Brian’s book proves that dogs are “not fur balls…they are fur angels, best friends, and soul mates.”

I’m a better person for having read this beautiful tribute to life with dog bliss.

This is an incredible book. If you don’t find yourself in tears several times (for me, starting as early as the introduction), then you’re not a dog person and I have no use for you.

It’s hard to articulate the impact that dogs have on our lives. They are like our children, but different. Their lives are obviously shorter, but burn brighter due to their unwavering devotion. As the author Brian pointed out at the end, a dog’s ability to give constant affection and support is something that’s hard to appreciate until they leave our lives all too suddenly.

Reading about the extraordinary lives of the dogs that Brian has grown up with is funny and touching and reminds me of the fulfillment all my dogs have given me. Thank you for these stories, and your perspective as both a veterinarian and a proud dog father. I look forward to more.

Dr. Joseph's book was a balm to my soul, a soothing collection of stories that warmed my heart and lifted my spirits. His writing is infused with warmth, humor, and a deep understanding of the human-animal bond. Every chapter feels gentle and sincere, offering comfort, reflection, and quiet joy. Reading this book has been a really unique experience. I have always been a pet lover, especially dogs so this book always had the leverage of grabbing my attention from the beginning. The author has written this book in layman's words I'd say because it's quite easy to grasp and understand what the author wants to portray. As I kept on reading the book, I came across a lot of things which I wasn't aware of. The concept of a rainbow bridge, all I could say is , it's very unique and heart touching. I've always believed dogs to be the most beautiful souls and this book has just made my beliefs strong. If you're someone who loves dogs , then you definitely need to read this one.

I was hesitant to pick up a dog-themed book, but Dr. Joseph's writing is disarming, and his stories are both universal and unique. As a fellow vet, I appreciated his insights into the world of veterinary care, but it's his love for his family and furry friends that truly shines through. He weaves together tales of laughter, tears, and the occasional chaos of life with a pack of dogs, creating a narrative that's both heartwarming and relatable. A beautiful, uplifting read that will leave you smiling and maybe even a little wistful.
The honesty and warmth make it easy to connect. This book gently reminds us why animals shape our lives so deeply.

I honestly didn’t expect this book to affect me the way it did. While the stories come from veterinary life, the emotions feel completely universal
Every chapter touches on love, loss, humor, and resilience in a way that feels genuine
The author never downplays the sadness, but he also doesn’t dwell on it. Instead, he shows how care and love continue even when loss is unavoidable
It’s the kind of book that leaves you feeling quietly comforted once you turn the last page 🐾🤍

I didn’t expect this book to resonate with me as deeply as it did. While the stories are specific to veterinary life, the emotions are universal.

Each chapter touches on love, loss, humor, and resilience with striking sincerity. The author doesn’t minimize sadness, nor does he wallow in it; instead, he shows how compassion persists even when loss is inevitable.

It’s one of those rare books that leaves you feeling quietly comforted.

I’m honestly baffled by the high praise 🤷‍♀️

It’s a shame, because Dr. Joseph seems like a genuinely kind person and a great vet. The writing feels like a rough draft—lacking polish and depth.

It reads more like a personal journal than a cohesive story. While I empathize with his loss, the writing didn’t quite do it justice.

With a strong editor, this could’ve been something truly special.

I wasn’t expecting to be so moved by a book about a veterinarian’s daily work, but this goes far beyond describing cases

It captures the emotional connections between pets and the people who love them
Some moments made me smile, others made my eyes sting
Most of all, it made grief feel a little less lonely 🐾✨

What I appreciated most was the lack of dramatization
The author talks about grief, responsibility, and care in a grounded way. Some moments are heavy, others quietly hopeful.

It feels like listening to someone reflect after years of experience, not someone trying to impress a reader.
That’s what made the stories linger🕊️
