About the author

"I was born in Oxford and grew up in Edinburgh and Southampton. After studying mathematics and philosophy at university I joined the Evening Argus in Brighton as a trainee reporter. I joined the Guardian in 1994 as a reporter and in 1998 moved to Rio de Janeiro, where I spent five years as the paper’s South America correspondent. Since 2003 I have lived in London, as a freelance writer and broadcaster.

All of these puzzle paradoxes are worth thinking about, though you might not agree with the author's analysis. Some of them hinge on dubious quibbles.

Alex Bellos zabiera nas w podróż po zakamarkach ludzkiego umysłu — pokazuje, jak bardzo nasz mózg lubi chodzić na skróty, upraszczać rzeczywistość i... czasem kompletnie się mylić wyciągając pochopne wnioski. 🙃🙃🙃

Znajdziesz tu zagadki z pogranicza matematyki, fizyki, geografii i logiki — takie, które z pozoru wydają się banalne, a jednak przeczą zdrowemu rozsądkowi. Po każdej z nich autor szczegółowo tłumaczy, dlaczego nasz umysł dał się zwieść i jak, krok po kroku, dojść do prawidłowego rozwiązania, korzystając z logicznego myślenia, rachunku prawdopodobieństwa czy matematycznych zależności.

Alles in allem solide Rätsel und hat unterhaltsame Momente. Man merkt stark, dass das Buch eine Übersetzung ist, da viele kulturelle/geografische Themen drin sind. Und manche Fragestellungen sind ein bisschen unklar gestellt.

I loved this! I did get some of the puzzles, some of those made me really chuffed too, but like the introduction says I enjoyed the ones I got wrong and understanding why I did just as much.

Myślisz, że myślisz logicznie? Alex Bellos w swojej książce „Przemyśl to” udowadnia, jak bardzo się mylimy, a co najlepsze, pomyłki te będziemy robić z uśmiechem na ustach 🤭

„Przemyśl to” nie jest typowym zbiorem suchych zadań matematycznych, to prawdziwy poligon doświadczalny dla naszego mózgu. Autor zebrał 70 swoich ulubionych łamigłówek, które łączy jedno: pozorna prostota, to właśnie ona jest największym haczykiem. Kiedy czytamy, że „niemal każdy popełnia tu błąd”, od razu włącza się w nas ambicja. Chcemy udowodnić sobie i innym, że jesteśmy w tej nielicznej mniejszości, która widzi właściwe rozwiązanie od razu.

W trakcie rozwiązywania zagadek wielokrotnie łapałam się na tym, że mój umysł podpowiada mi „oczywistą” odpowiedź, która okazywała się kompletnie błędna. Klasyczne przykłady, jak ten o maszynach produkujących gadżety czy wieku Aarona i Betsy, pokazują, jak bardzo nasze intuicyjne myślenie lubi iść na skróty. Jednak najpiękniejszym momentem w tej książce nie jest samo poznanie wyniku, ale owo wielkie „Ach, więc to tak!”, które towarzyszy czytaniu wyjaśnień. Bellos nie tylko podaje rozwiązanie, ale tłumaczy mechanizm błędu. Wyjaśnia dokładnie, gdzie ukryła się pułapka i jak trenować umysł, by następnym razem nie dać się tak łatwo oszukać.

To nie jest książka do „przeczytania” poduszki. Wymaga od nas wysiłku, kartki papieru i przede wszystkim otwartej głowy. Co ciekawe, „Przemyśl to” fantastycznie sprawdza się jako rozrywka towarzyska. Testowałam ją podczas wieczorów ze znajomymi i muszę przyznać, że wywołuje więcej emocji i ożywionych dyskusji niż niejedna gra planszowa. To idealny kompan na długą podróż lub zimowy wieczór.

Krótkie łamigłówki oraz zwięzłe i wyczerpujące odpowiedzi.
Na pierwszy rzut oka wydają się one proste, ale gwarantuję, że w większości z nich popełnicie błąd.
Dobra wiadomość jest taka, że nie będziecie jedyni.
Z jednej strony to dobra zabawa, z drugiej spora frustracja: "przecież to było takie proste i logiczne".
Te zabawy uswiadamiają po raz kolejny jak skomplikowane są meandry ludzkiego umysłu, przy okazji bedąc dla niego świetną gimnastyką.

Zajmująca i pouczająca rozrywka.

A collection of puzzles that have an obvious, but incorrect, solution.

Such as the classic "A Ball and a Bat cost $110; the bat is $100 more than the ball. How much is the ball?" and some similar mindbenders. Most of them are reasonably obvious once you start thinking about them - but what is interesting is how quickly the human brain jumps to the wrong conclusions, and how difficult it is to 'think again', once the brain has found a potential solution.

Another one: "We're in a race, and I'm in second place. You overtake me. What place are you in?"

Mindbending fun

Great puzzles, many of which you will get wrong! Some you will intuit but be unable to explain, others you will know and vaguely recall. Great food for party challenges and to keep your mind stretched.

Some good puzzles in here. Most are fairly accessible but there are some that require specific knowledge such as American geography, and others in colour that are useless on a black and white e-reader.

I love puzzles and the ones in this book are great! They truly do make you think twice, and the explanations after the puzzles are so interesting!
