Faithfully walking—and uncovering joy—on a road paved with suffering.
The Christian life is marked with great suffering. We live in a fallen and broken world full of disappointments and the loss of dreams. And there is a cost to following Christ—often painfully felt in close relationships.
In her book, Still Standing Lina AbuJamra shares how God’s refining process makes Him bigger in our hearts and transforms us into people who are like Him. Our pain can lead to despair and bitterness, or it can make us more like Jesus. But we must be willing to undergo the refining process—and this hurts.
Lina shows us the truly amazing and beautiful reality that we can have joy amidst the most difficult of circumstances. Without denying the real pain many of us carry, Lina shows Christians how to rediscover joy. She shows us how God’s presence is our guarantee for joy no matter what we’re going through. Lina looks to current and biblical stories to show us how refined people can be used by God to persevere and build His kingdom.
I love talking about God’s radical calling of His children and what it means to follow Jesus wholeheartedly, especially when it hurts. If there is one thing that continues to surprise me as I follow Jesus, it’s the difficulty of the journey, the unexpected delays, the detours, the disappointments, and the waiting. Despite what I know about God, I still catch myself taken aback by the amount of suffering endured in the pursuit of one’s calling. It is my hope that this book inspires hope in the hearts of followers of Jesus who have encountered suffering as they have pursued obedience to Christ.
Still Standing is an updated edition, previously published with the title Stripped.
This book resonated deeply with me — an invitation to draw closer to God even as someone who has followed Jesus for 20 years. The book touches on different temptations we have to cope when life is hard and directs our focus back to Jesus’ good news. The writing was excellent and the author didn’t shy away from calling us out like a good mentor would! I was convicted and given hope
Still Standing is such a motivational read! This is a great book for any believer who deals with the ordinary trials and frustrations of life. People who have experienced very deep trauma may struggle to see their stories reflected in this book. If able to set that aside, and apply it primarily to ordinary struggles, it is very relevant. I so appreciate the vulnerability of Dr. Lina as she shares such personal examples of the truths she seeks to illustrate. She does not protect herself to try to look good or angelic to the reader. Dr. Lina spares nothing of herself, so that she can completely glorify God with the work He does in her. I dog eared this book more than any other, as so often Dr. Lina pointed out truths from God's Word, describing them in such practical and accessible terms. How this book spoke to me personally was to challenge me in my prayer life. I have a tried and true prayer system that is very effective for my scatterbrained mentality. However, despite my commitment to time in prayer, and a diversity of prayer requests, I realized through Still Standing just how weak my praying was. I realized that I put more faith in the stubbornness of humans, than I do in God's power to override that stubbornness. My prayers for hard headed non-believing loved ones was very weak. Through the encouragement of Still Standing, I have become much more bold in my prayers.
I had the privilege of endorsing this awesome book: Each and every one of us will face wilderness seasons in this life. And Still Standing equips us for the journey, combining Lina’s refreshing honesty and boldness with timeless Biblical truths that remind us that we are never alone. A beacon of hope and encouragement, this book is a must-read for all seeking to deepen their spiritual resilience and walk with unshakeable faith.
This is Abujamra at her best. Deep knowledge of Scripture, realistic depiction of what it looks like to follow Jesus, and an encouragement to not quit. Lina simultaneously gives us a hug and a soft kick in the pants. Very practical.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who is struggling through a trial and wants to learn how to find joy and peace in the Lord. I’ve read all of Lina AbuJamra’s books and they have helped me in my journey through life and sanctification.
