Cold Feet, Warm Heart

Rate this book
On-line romances can be a great way to fall in love - or to get into trouble.

Abby Harris had never been impetuous - until she escaped to Antarctica to marry a man whose words had won her heart, but whose face she'd never seen and whose voice she'd never heard.

A sight-unseen love affair had its surprises, though. Abby got one when she and her wilting wedding bouquet deplaned in the frozen tundra and fell into the arms of Prescott Roberts, the egotistical scientist from her office - powerfully transformed into an officer and a gentleman.

She'd never cared for his arrogant manner. He'd never cared for her ice-princess coolness. Neither believed in destiny - but they believed in a deal. Dealmaking was a risky business, though, when the bargaining table was the marriage bed.

Kathy Clark has always been a storyteller. She completed her first novel when she was four years old and self-published it the same year. The Little Black Horse That Ran Away was self-illustrated and sold out of its first printing. Thanks Mom!

Since then, a total of twenty-three novels published by Dell, Crown, and Harlequin happened. With her husband Bob Wernly as a co-writer, they published (both traditionally and epub) an additional fourteen novels.

Nine of these fourteen books were self-published in the romantic suspense, young adult and erotic romance genres. The remaining five published by Random House LLC as the Denver Heroes and Austin Heroes, released in 2015 and throughout 2016.

The author team are currently developing a new contemporary romance series (with a suspense backdrop) titled Breathless. High altitude, high stakes, and high romance, the series will begin in 2017 with the first book, Fools Gold . The series is set in Cripple Creek, Colorado.

Their young adult genre series, Time Shifters, is a time travel romance-mystery series. The fifth book in the award winning series, Not My Life releases 10.18.16.

Finally, their new adult romantic suspense series, Scandals, currently has the first three books released.

With two people developing ideas, plotting, researching, writing and editing, Kathy and Bob are both busy and productive. To be perfectly honest, Kathy and Bob would rather be riding horses, sitting on a sandy beach, watching movies or plays, and playing a round of golf every few days. But the voices in their heads insist on coming out, so they keep writing.

Abby and Prescott have been communicating online for months now on scientific related topics. They go from being friends to wanting a closer relationship. However, this is not possible because Prescott travels a lot because of his job. Because of the way they present themselves online, they both don’t realize that they already know each other from work. Abby has been asked out several times from this coworker who is really Prescott. Abby doesn’t accept his invitations even once but from her observations or their talk, she forms the opinion that he is arrogant and flirtatious. She doesn’t like him. She does say yes to him for a scientific related event where they won’t be alone. But around this time, she is still communicating to Prescott online who asks her to marry him. Abby cancels with Prescott but does so through a letter that is not nice. This makes Prescott angry.

The story begins with Abby on the plane, having quit her job and giving up her apartment to marry Prescott. Prescott was given a job at a base in Antarctica and won’t be able to speak to her online for about 4 months through the program they have been using to communicate. So he lets her know that he loves her and that he can bring her along if she marries him. There, they can spend time together and even research on the continental-drift together. They are surprised when they meet face to face once the plane lands. Despite the discovery of they really are, they go ahead with the marriage.

They start out having a good time as they spend more time with each other in Antarctica. We see progress, but then suddenly their past arguments resurface due to something they both said/did to each other when they were coworkers. As a result, for a while they ignore each other. The story got a little boring around this time, but it picks up.

There are a few reasons I didn’t give this a 5. First, throughout the story they argue about their identities, how they behaved as coworkers, and about their feelings. It got very confusing since in a way, Abby introduced herself using a different name and gave a couple of details that are not exactly how she is in real life. So there are two identities there and because of the names Prescott uses he also has more than one identity or sort of a role in the story. So as they argue, it sometimes becomes confusing what exactly the other felt and in which role they felt this.

Secondly, and this is the main reason the story didn’t get a 5, is that I wanted actual scenes of them together as coworkers before the wedding. I wanted to see real dialogue at their work place when they didn’t know they were actually communicating online already. We are told from Abby’s point of view that Prescott was annoying and arrogant but we are not exactly shown this. I would have liked to see what exactly caused Abby to not like Prescott. We know Prescott asked her out several times but got angry only after the letter and the cancellation of the “date” Abby does agree on. But I didn’t exactly see a reason for Abby to hate him. Perhaps, it was because she is shy and a little unsure about her looks, but it still didn’t explain her hostility towards him.

Overall, I liked it. It was sort of like enemies to lovers type story but just needed a few things done differently as mentioned above to have a 5 rating.

Very good book. Abby is the quiet and smart one of her three sisters. She considers herself to be plain and unremarkable. When she starts on online correspondence with a fellow scientist she doesn't expect anything more than friendship. When he finds out that he is going to be spending four months in Antarctica he asks her to marry him and join him there. Even though she'd never done anything like this before, she said yes. She was stunned to find out that he was a coworker whom she never gotten along with, and he was just as surprised by her. However, he had been drawn to her from the beginning and now had to decide how to handle this marriage. I really liked both Abby and Prescott. Abby had a chance to break out of her shell and be a different person. I liked the way that she made an effort to do more than just work and got to know the people she was with. I also liked the way that she was trying to give her relationship a chance. As she and Prescott took the time to actually get to know each other as people she found there was a lot about him that she really liked. She also realized that she had fallen in love with him, but didn't have the courage to tell him so. Prescott was angry at the deception at first, but as he got to know Abby better he discovered there was more to her than he had realized before they got to Antarctica. I loved the way that he appreciated all of her layers and how he came to love the whole woman. Both of them did a lot of growing while they were there. I thought the ending was really neat.

I’m using my current KU membership to explore a number of authors/books that were recommended to me or caught my eye in any other form.
This one’s not my cup of tea. The writing style is flowing and engaging though contains many typos, missing or unnecessary words.
My biggest issues were :
- I disliked both MCs pretty much
- the dysfunctional relationship between them, with a constant running hot and cold and complete lack of communication
- the cheesy and unsatisfying ending
- the entire relationship was way too rushed and (my very personal pet peeve) based on deception

What I liked:
- the setting (scientific and military station in the Antarctic)
- Penny

Since romantic suspense is my favorite genre I’ll try at some point this author’s books in this genre in the hope I’ll enjoy those more. For now I’ll try some of the other authors on my list.
