About the author

Nicola Martin is an award-winning author of psychological thrillers, short stories and non-fiction.

Her debut novel, Dead Ringer, a thriller about meeting your doppelganger, won the Fiction Prize at the 2021 Lakeland Book of the Year Awards. Her second novel, The Getaway, is a murder-mystery set on a private island in the Caribbean, published by Bloomsbury Raven.

Following a 15-year career in PR/marketing, Nicola is now a full-time writer. She studied literature at the University of East Anglia and the University of California, Berkeley.

In addition to novels, she has had more than 40 short stories published in magazines like The People’s Friend, Best, and the Sunday Express. She is also the co-author of a non-fiction book, Defeat Dyslexia!: The Parents’ Guide to Understanding Your Child’s Dyslexia.

Nicola was brought up in Bristol and returned there as an adult. She’s happy to bore you to tears telling you about what a great city it is. When she’s not writing, you’ll find her poking around an art gallery, in the audience for a piece of weird theatre, or playing board games with friends.

Paradies

Lola arbeitet im Management eines vornehmen Hotel in Hongkong. Mit ihrem Kollegen Moxham versteht sie sich gut bis dieser plötzlich in die Karibik verschwindet. Erst danach merkt Lola, was er hinterlassen hat. Und nach einem unangenehmen Ereignis folgt sie ihm auf die karibische Insel. Lola muss auch an ihre Schwester denken. Auf dieser paradiesischen Insel sollte alles top sein. Allerdings wird Moxham schon kurz nach ihrer Ankunft tot aufgefunden. Dass das ein Unfall sein soll wie behauptet wird, kann Lola nicht glauben. Neben ihrer Betreuung der anspruchsvollen Gäste fängt Lola an, Nachforschungen anzustellen.

Auf einer sonnigen Insel in der Karibik sollte ein paradiesischer Frieden herrschen. Doch hinter den Kulissen brodelt es. Moxham erweist sich nicht als der gute Freund. Er hat ein paar Eigenschaften, die alles andere als menschenfreundlich sind. Wahrscheinlich sind ihm diese nun auf die Füße gefallen. Lola will wissen, was passiert ist. Weder unter den Gästen noch im Person ist alles so wie es zunächst den Anschein erweckt hat. Kann sie überhaupt jemandem vertrauen?Jedoch muss Lola auch für ihre Schwester und ihre Nichte sorgen, die in London leben. Für sich selbst braucht sie nicht viel. Den gewissen Luxus bietet das Resort.

Das auffällige und farbenfrohe Cover zieht die Blicke an und auch der Klappentext macht neugierig. Es ist also ein Leichtes zuzugreifen und sich in den Roman zu vertiefen. In ihm wird ein ganz anderer auf auf ein luxuriöses Hotelresort geworfen. Natürlich bekommen die reichen und verwöhnten Gäste jeden Wunsch erfüllt. Doch hinter den Kulissen werden Intrigen gesponnen und man merkt, dass der schöne Schein trügt. Dabei kommt Lola von einer erstaunlichen Geschichte in die andere. Ob das tatsächlich übertrieben ist oder ob es lediglich übertrieben wirkt, mag dahingestellt sein. Beim lesen denkt man schon hin und wieder, weniger wäre mehr gewesen. Und die Hintertriebenheit wäre nicht so allumfassend, dass einzelne Hintergründe nicht mehr klar werden. Doch ingesamt hat man einen spannenden und flott zu lesenden Thriller in einem tollen Urlaubssetting. Der Schluss wirkt dabei etwas offen, so dass man vielleicht wieder auf die Insel zurückkehren kann.

Lola is escaping an incident that happened while she was working in hospitality in Hong Kong. She’s literally dropped everything, including her boyfriend, and run away to work for her friend, Moxham. But before long she realises that the island paradise that she’s escaped to is full of privileged and demanding rich people, staff that can’t be trusted and an owner that will protect his island at all costs. When her friend turns up dead in an apparent accident, she must decide who to trust while she investigates the death and tries to prove it’s not just an accident.

I enjoyed the premise of this book and it kept me guessing throughout. Yes, you can work out who the bad guys are likely to be and there’s plenty of red herrings thrown in to keep you in your toes. The island and its owner definitely feels like it was modelled on Richard Branson and his island.

All in all, it’s a fun murder mystery with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing and I enjoyed the way everything tied up nicely with a fun epilogue. 3.5/4

This was a great read, I actually really enjoyed this even though I didn’t think it would be my thing in the first few chapters. But what really made it for me was the depth of so many characters, the whole book was a continuous development of each characters backstory, why they made it to Keepers Island and what kept them there.

At the start of the book, the island is made out to be this beautiful place, a dream vacation for the best of the best, which it is. But quickly you find that not everything is as it seems and that every person is hiding something from everyone else. Lola is determined to find out the dark secrets, the murderer, the mystery and that’s what truly kept me going.

I loved the twists and turns at every opportunity, and no matter how much I kept going, I didn’t know where the story was likely to end up. I originally gave this 3* but after reflection, it went up to a 4* purely for the world and character building that took place throughout the book, right up to the end.

A great read, well worth picking this up!

This story was about a lady who is trying to escape something that isn’t very clear when the reader first starts 👀. The only critique I would have is balance the amount of characters you introduce over the space of a longer time. I found myself having to note which character is which.

I absolutely loved this book and was on the edge of my seat for the whole last half of it. It definitely wasn’t short on action and really exceeded my expectations! I had NO clue what was going to happen and the plot twists had me completely shocked.

The reason I’ve rated this a four star instead of a five star is merely because I’m not sure what to think of the epilogue. Is there going to be a second book? Or was the ending just to keep a bit of mystery and make the reader think? Either way, it was a brilliantly tense read and I would definitely recommend it!

Ich bin über das Cover auf das Buch aufmerksam geworden. Insbesondere war ich interessiert, warum sich ein Barcode auf der Vorderseite befindet, aber während der Mordfall aufgedeckt wurde, bleibt dieses Rätsel weiter offen.

Nach einem blutigen Zwischenfall verschlägt es unsere Protagonistin Lola auf die Luxus-Insel Keeper Island. Ihr alter Kollege Moxham verschafft ihr hier einen Job als stellvertretende Hotelmanagerin, der schnell zur Hotelmanagerin wird, als Moxham in der Nacht ihrer Ankunft zu Tode kommt. Lola ist sich sicher, dass es sich dabei um keinen Unfall handeln kann und die zwielichtigen Machenschaften von Moxham lassen schnell den Verdacht aufkommen, dass nicht alles mit rechten Dingen zugeht. Angestellte und Gäste hintergehen sich gegenseitig. Wem kann Lola da noch trauen?

Sind wir ehrlich, ich fand es relativ leicht herauszufinden, wem sie trauen kann und wem nicht. Die Autorin baut einige falsche Fährten ein, doch einige der Figuren wedeln geradezu mit einer roten Flagge. Für mich hat deswegen die Spannung gefehlt, gerade als sich dann die meisten meiner Vermutungen auch bestätigt haben.

Ich habe mich sowieso ständig gefragt, wer auf dieser Insel eigentlich arbeitet? Beschrieben wird es als karibisches Luxusresort, aber sind wir ehrlich, so wirklich gearbeitet hat kaum jemand. Lola hat sich ständig frei genommen, war auf eigener Mission unterwegs oder hat sich mit den Gästen vergnügt. Vielleicht habe ich eine völlig falsche Auffassung einer Hotelmanagerin, aber muss sie nicht auch mal arbeiten?

Alles in allem war es für mich ein völlig durchschnittlicher Thriller. Keine besonderen Twists und nichts, was ihn besonders erinnerungswürdig macht. Aber gleichzeitig lässt es sich gut am Strand weglesen. Kann man also schon machen, man verpasst aber auch nichts, wenn man es nicht liest.

The Getaway by Nicola Martin

The striking cover and great blurb on this book was what originally caught my eye and I'm glad it did, as this was an overall very enjoyable read.

I loved the setting of Keepers island and liked how the author juxtaposed this gorgeous island setting with such evil actions and people. Nicola Martin has lovely descriptive writing which really paints a picture in the reader's mind and draws you into this beautiful, yet deserted and deadly island setting. We first arrive at Keepers Island with Lola, who is running from something bad that happened in her last job in Hong Kong. The readers are left guessing right from the beginning as to whether or not Lola is a good person, and we are left desperately grasping at the small fragments of detail the author drops in throughout to discover what really happened. The underlying plot regarding Nathan, Lola and Allie was not pertinent to the main story, but was an interesting additional storyline that helped keep me gripped throughout.

Nicola Martin is most definitely a master at building suspense/tension in her books, and all the plot twists were unexpected and shocking, which added to my enjoyment when reading this. The small bits of dark humour and tongue-in-cheek moments really helped lighten the otherwise somber, intense atmosphere to the book and was also certainly a nice addition.

I would say that perhaps there are too many characters and, therefore, too many moving parts within this book. I loved Lola's character throughout and, even if she did do some questionable things at times, she was a relatable and raw character. I also enjoyed learning about the staff (Diara, Kip and Fizzy in particular), but the huge amount of background characters that were slotted in was perhaps unnecessary and left things feeling confused. However, perhaps confusing the readers and making the murderer harder to find was the author's intention. Saying that, some of these random characters (mainly the rich, entitled ones) were hilarious and eye-roll worthy; for example the guy who sends Lola on the insane Mcdonalds trip or the couple who needed a plushie unicorn for their engagement, both of which made me giggle out loud.

Unfortunately I did only rate this a 3 out of 5 stars, and that is simply to the fact that, when comparing it with other books from the same genre, it is quite average. I enjoy the writing style, the humour and the deeply layered plot, but there was nothing to set this author, or this book, apart from the rest and that is why I went with an average rating. I will, however, be looking forward to reading more from this author in the future and would definitely recommend you keep an eye out for her, she has all the potential to be a fantastic murder mystery writer!

A Thrilling Tropical Escape Meets Murder Mystery

Thank you so much to NetGalley and Bloomsbury Publishing for providing me with an advance copy of this incredible novel.

The cover initially caught my eye, and I’m so glad it did. Set on a lush, idyllic island in the Caribbean, the story is far from a simple tropical escape. From the very first page, it had the feel of a classic Cluedo game, with tension steadily building as each character was introduced.

The author does an excellent job of creating fully realised, intriguing characters that keep you on edge, constantly guessing who might be the culprit. It’s rare to find a mystery so interactive and immersive, and I was completely engrossed from start to finish.

On a personal note, I wasn’t a fan of the single quotation marks (‘ ’) for dialogue, preferring double ones (“ ”), but that’s just a matter of personal preference and doesn’t detract from the strength of the writing.

Overall, this is a fantastic read with great pacing and character development. If you enjoy a good mystery, you’ll definitely want to pick this one up when it’s released!

Lola has fled a dark past as a hotel manager in Hong Kong. She takes a hotel manager’s job at a private resort on a private island, Keeper Island in the British Virgin Islands, owned by an eccentric billionaire. She comes there at the invitation of her old mentor and fixer Moxham. Lola thinks she has escaped a dark past stalked by death, but then the bodies start piling up on Keeper Island beginning with Moxham.

The narrative of the story is told from Lola’s perspective. From the time her boat moors at Keeper Island we begin to see it’s beautiful, luxury filled but closed world open out, even as her thoughts often turn to the dark circumstances that caused her to leave her former home. As the book goes on more and more of this dark past is revealed.

Mike Moxham had arranged for Lola to have the job as Deputy Manager of the island’s private resort before her arrival. So straight away she is plunged into a catering for the whims and often demanding peculiarities of the super wealthy who come to the island. This island also has the unusual distinction of also being the private home for the reclusive and eccentric billionaire Chip who owns the island as well as a chain of hotels around the world.

Mike Moxham’s death is a detonator for Lola’s anxiety’s. She wasn’t sure of her place in the island before, and her past association with death in Hong Kong means her curiosity cannot let Moxham’s passing go. But as insights into her previous life in Hong Kong reveals, Moxham had plenty of skeletons in his closet which indicate heavily that it was unlikely that his death was an accident.

The format book for this is in many ways like a Poirot adventure for the “Below Decks” generation (a programme which I despise and can only be improved with the introduction of marauding Somali pirates). Unlike Poirot though, the unlocking of the mystery seems to have less to do with the particulars of opportunity and timing and more to do with hidden agendas and the reasons why certain characters have chosen to come to Keeper Island. The above is admittedly a bit of a generalisation of this book which I think undersells a few of what I see as it’s unique selling points.

The level of research and attention to detail and authenticity displayed by the author is commendable. From the brief glimpses of the beautiful and sometimes bleak settings ordinary British Virgin Islanders live in to uses of unique expressions in discussion, it feels like the author has made an effort to weave authenticity seamlessly into the book. Some of the cuisine described as being catered to the rich guests of Keeper Island sound like the sort of thing they would go for, indicating prior research.

But what holds the book altogether is it’s readability. The narrative is easy to follow and reveals some interesting hidden thoughts and judgements regarding encounters with other characters. There is also a good level of humour that seems to meander between the tastefully dark to the sarcastic, which helps the reader appreciates the moments Lola finds herself overwhelmed not just by the potential danger she faces but also exasperated by her colleagues refusing to break ranks to find out more about what is happening on the island. There are also plenty of moments when Lola mentally eyerolls over one “diva-like” request from one rich guest after another.

I also found it personally amusing how the main IT guy who Lola detests for being unhelpful has a very similar name to my own. I know the author personally, but I am sure this is just a cheeky coincidence.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. The addictive readability of the book mixed with some interesting themes. Lola isn’t set in an overused anti-hero mould, nor is she especially heroic. Her mix of desperately asking people to take extreme measures to help her and then being frightened of the consequences may be dismissed by some reasons as cowardly, but I think it makes her more normal and believable. The backing cast that work within Keeper Island are by and large mainly quite convincing and well rounded, leaving me to believe that the author has heard more than their fair share of stories from the hospitality industry. The book also plays on some very modern themes, such as rising interest and anxiety about what the ultra-wealthy get up to in their secret Caribbean hideaways. Modern concern started from the playboy antics of Richard Branson but arguably reached the dark side of the spectrum with Jeffrey Epstein’s infamous island in the British Virgin Islands. This book plays on the common understanding that ultimately the ultra-wealthy work on a different level to the rest of us, potentially leaving us mere mortals to suffer the fallout from it. In this way I saw weird echoes of the eccentric Jurassic Park owner John Hammond in the owner of Keeper Island. Both seemed to be at least at first oblivious to the tragedy that happens within their domains for different reasons, as though they had the power to keep control of their own environments over mere mortals.

The other theme which I recognise in this book is how people desperately seek chances at redemption, but can allow past baggage to potentially distract them from taking such chances. The ending of the book seems to imply that the past is our heavy baggage, but only if we let it be so.

Tödliches Paradies

Krimis/Thriller an schönen und exotischen Schauplätzen scheinen gerade im Trend zu liegen. Vorzugsweise mit einem Schauplatz auf einer Insel, die bei Sturm dramaturgisch-praktisch von der Außenwelt abgeschlossen sein kann. Locked room mystery mit Strand eben. Auch "The Island - Auf der Flucht" von Nicola Martin reiht sich in dieses Genre ein. Protagonistin ist Hospitality-Spezialistin Lola, die als Ich-Erzählerin durch die Handlung führt.

Lola hat in einem Hotel in Hongkong gearbeitet, doch nun muss sie die Stadt fluchtartig verlassen. Wie gut, dass Hotelkollegen international vernetzt sind. Und wie gut, dass ihr früherer Kollege Moxham einen passenden Job zu vergeben hat in einem Luxusresort auf der privaten Insel des Milliardärs Kip. Lola denkt nicht lange nach, den Luxus kann sie sich nicht leisten. Mit reichlich Jet lag findet sie sich an einem Traumstrand wieder. Doch das Paradies hat Tücken.

Da ist zum einen das Gästeklientel - superreich, superprivilegiert, super anstrengend. Menschen, die sich alles leisten können, fallen nicht unbedingt durch Empathie und Verständnis auf - wir kennen das von Trump und seinen Milliardärs-Freunden. Zwar ist die erfahrene Lola an anstrengende und anspruchsvolle Gäste gewöhnt, aber nicht jeder ist so hart im Nehmen, und so muss sie immer wieder ihre neuen Mitarbeiter, allen voran die dünnhäutige und nicht besonders leistungsfreudige part time-Influencerin Tessa, vor manchem Nervenzusammenbruch bewahren und gleichzeitig den Laden am Laufen halten.

Das ist umso schwerer, als Moxham, schon immer ein eher windiger Geselle, sein eigenes Süppchen unter den Schönen und Reichen zu kochen scheint, bei dem nur wenig legal sein dürfte. Noch ehe ein klärendes Gespräch möglich ist, ist Moxham tot - angeblich ein Unfall. Doch Lola kommen immer mehr Zweifel, vor allem, als sie mehr zu Moxhams Machenschaften herausfindet. Inselbesitzer Kip wischt alle Einwände beiseite - bis hin zur Vertuschung? Überhaupt scheint der alte Mann so manches Geheimnis zu haben. Lola fragt sich, ob der Tod seiner Frau vor einigen Jahren ein Unfall, Selbstmord oder gar ein Mord war. Doch alle anderen auf der Insel, vom Chef bis zu den Kollegen, halten an Verharmlosung, womöglich Vertuschung fest. Lola aber will nicht aufgeben....

"The Island" zeigt das Oben und Unten im Luxusressort - hier die Villen mit Designer-Einrichtung und Stil, da die Mehrbettzimmer der Angestellten, die stets ein strahlendes Lächeln zu zeigen haben. Geheimnisse könnte es hier wie dort geben. Auf ihrer Suche nach der Wahrheit muss sich Lola fragen, ob sie mehr riskiert als nur die eigene Karriere.

"The Island" bedient ein paar Klischees, ist aber eingängig zu lesen und bietet mit einer karibischen Insel eine traumhafte Kulisse - auch wenn der Aufenthalt für Lola zunehmend zum Alptraum wird. Die Autorin liefert den Leser*innen reichlich mögliche Verdächtige und manchen "red herring". Sowohl als Strand- und Pool-Lektüre wie auch zum Schüren von Fernweh geeignet.

I love a good behind the scenes look at what it's like to work for the obscenely rich and/or live in a tourist spot and The Getaway offers that in SPADES, baby: the cloistered chaos of living at your job and the friendships/frenemies/situationships that come along with that, the tedium of dealing with people who've never been told "no" and can't imagine hearing it now, the good and bad excitements of living on an island (pretty! but also, as I read this while tracking Hurricane Beryl's path of destruction, the Terror), the upstairs/downstairs of it all and how those lines blur when you factor in long-term guests on a teeny resort...delicious.

All of this is anchored by fascinating characters including our MC Lola, haunted by recent events she's trying to escape, her roommate Diara, whose friendship Lola seeks with all the alacrity of an extrovert in her first week of college in a brand new city, rich charmer Brady, whose flirtations Lola returns with the refreshing certainty of a meaningless vacation fling, and Lola's ex Nathan, a puppy with sharp teeth. And then there's Mike Moxham, whose death kicks off the drama (well, the drama on THIS island at least) and who seems like a great friend to have if you completely strip away any regard for morality in the manner of my 83-year-old Uncle Richie who was just telling me about his old friend Rob who was "terrible to his wife, cheated on her all the time" but "a nice guy though".

Lola's quest to find out what really happened to Moxham is riveting, with the revelations coming at a steady pace in between all the champagne, staff parties, and emotional entanglements. You can't help but feel for Lola as she grasps for answers and connection while being a consistently bad judge of character (honestly relatable; like why would anyone ever just lie to you?! but yeah unfortunately they're gonna lie and also feel fine about it) as it's so clear that she has a good heart and good intentions. It's surprisingly difficult to find really sympathetic MCs like this in this sometimes very paint-by-numbers plot-over-character genre, but Lola's so engaging you can't help but root for her.

Author Nicola Martin is fabulous too at writing immersive settings that make you feel like you're right there living it - I still think about the climactic scene of her previous (fantastic, recommended) novel Dead Ringer set in the sinking sands of a bleak British island, and with this one I'll be haunted by the wedding set on an outer island so teeny that it disappears at high tide, and how deeply stressful it was to read along while Lola packed up in a hurry as the glorified sandbar was gradually swallowed up by the sea.

The tension of it all racheted up as steadily as the coming storm until the very satisfying rain-soaked climax, and the unexpected epilogue was the cherry on top. The Getaway releases on November 7, 2024 in the US so mark your calendars for this one. I highly recommend it!

Before starting this review, I'd like to say that I had a hard time reading it. I borrowed this book from Libby and the ebook they provided was an pdf scan. So with my bad eyesight I kept on having to adjust every page to my phone before I could read it. It took so much away from my enjoyment. I appreciated the library having it avaliable but I wish it was formatted differently. Especially because Libby is a way to make reading more accessible to readers and making it more difficult to read defeats one of it's best qualities of having a library app.

I don't know how to start this review without sounding mean but don't read this book. It's boring. Spend your time reading something else. This book is describe almost like a whodunit but on a private island with many suspects from the rich and famous to the staff. Instead it reads like those boring spy books set during the cold war. In the sense that nothing really happens and it feels all for naught. Instead of it being like a murder mystery thriller it's more like a how to run a private resort with personal baggage. Plus we barely meet the Moxham, the murder victim. It's not a spoiler because it's in the summary of the book. The reader does not care for a person who is hardly there. When Moxham was alive he spent his time avoiding Lola and learning about him after his death is just like... Well he clearly had it coming so why should I care? Especially as none of the characters in this book are likeable or relatable. Plus the characters like to say they're doing one thing but then goes back on their word and does the opposite of what they originally wanted to do. Like they'll give warnings but disregard it a page later. I also felt like Lola was quick to trust people... in a murder mystery book. I also felt like she had a bit of a hero complex. She was out here trying to solve the murder mystery and not let anyone else die but putting herself in very clear danger whilst doing it.

To me this book reads like a first draft before an editior recommends changes. Because the last 100 or so pages were okay. But because the characters lacked development, and I didn't like them or related to them in anyway, I was invested to see what happened but I didn't care who lived or died. Or really who was the bad guy. It was more of a I want to finish this book to mark it as read than because I actually want to read it.

Overall, the two star rating is because its readable. I finished it. I wished I didn't start it in the first place. The cover just looked so good. So don't be fooled like me.

Neuanfang im Paradies?

„Keeper Island war ein Smaragd, der aus dieser Entfernung so klein war, dass er in meine Hand zu passen schien. In der Mitte der Insel ragte ein grün bewaldeter Gipfel auf. Beim Näherkommen erblickte ich einen Sandstrand, Palmen winkten mir zu. Dies würde mein sicherer Hafen sein. Mein Zufluchtsort.“

Lola scheint hier endlich angekommen zu sein. Illustre Gäste finden in diesem Luxusresort die Erholung, die sich suchen. Jeder nur erdenkliche Wunsch ist dem Team Befehl, nichts ist unmöglich. Gleich nach Lolas Ankunft steigt eine Party, bald darauf gibt das Meer Moxhams Leiche frei. Er war hier Resortchef und er war es auch, der Lola diesen Traumjob besorgt hat. Denn schon in Hongkong waren sie Kollegen und nachdem sie von dort dringend weg musste, möglichst ohne Spuren zu hinterlassen, kam die Möglichkeit, hier zu arbeiten, mehr als gelegen.

Ein Unfall soll es gewesen sein, der Moxham das Leben gekostet hat. Lola glaubt nicht so recht an diese These – sie beginnt auf eigene Faust zu ermitteln. Dabei vertraut sie zunächst einer Kollegin, auch ein Gast scheint ganz auf ihrer Linie zu sein. Dabei kommt es immer wieder mal zu bedrohlichen Szenarien, ein weiterer Todesfall wird als Unfall deklariert, zudem legt ein gewaltiger Sturm das Leben draußen weitgehend lahm.

Von Lola erfahre ich in Rückblicken mehr, auch weiß ich um ihre Schwester und deren Tochter, ein Typ aus vergangenen Zeiten will sie nicht loslassen, alles scheint ziemlich düster.

„Von außen betrachtet hatte ich hier einen Traumjob ergattert. Solange alles, was in Hongkong geschehen war, in der Vergangenheit blieb, war ich hier sicher.“

Es beginnt gemächlich, das erste Drittel scheint nicht allzu viel an Dramatik zu enthalten. Dass dies ein Trugschluss ist, stellt sich so nach und nach heraus, auch wird es zunehmend heftig und bedrohlich. Lola lässt nicht locker, gefühlt jeder scheint Geheimnisse zu haben. Wem ist hier noch zu trauen? Was mir so gar nicht gefällt ist, dass hier jeder nicht nur trinkt, nein. Es sind regelrechte Alkoholexzesse – egal ob Gast oder Angestellter - die an der Tagesordnung sind. Auch wenn es bei dem einen Toten nicht bleibt, ist es doch eher ein Psychothriller, der den Blick immer wieder auf die Vergangenheit lenkt. Die Charaktere – einschließlich Lola – waren mir durchweg unsympathisch, ihr Agieren war des Öfteren eher realitätsfern. Spannend war es trotzdem – ein durch und durch gefährliches, ein falsches Spiel vor herrlicher Kulisse.

Weiße Sandstrände, türkisblaues Meer und tropische Cocktails – The Island entführt seine Leser:innen auf den ersten Blick in ein karibisches Urlaubsparadies. Doch schon nach wenigen Seiten wird klar: Keeper Island ist kein Ort zur Erholung, sondern ein Albtraum in Designeroptik. Nicola Martin inszeniert mit sicherem Gespür für Spannung und Atmosphäre einen packenden Inselthriller, der nicht nur durch seinen exotischen Schauplatz besticht, sondern vor allem durch ein raffiniert konstruiertes Netz aus Intrigen, Geheimnissen und menschlichen Abgründen.
Im Zentrum steht die Hotelmanagerin Lola, die nach einem blutigen Zwischenfall in Hongkong auf Keeper Island ein neues Leben beginnen will. Doch kaum angekommen, wird ihr Mentor Moxham tot aus dem Meer gezogen – angeblich ein Unfall. Für Lola beginnt eine gefährliche Gratwanderung: Zwischen schillernden Gästen, zwielichtigen Angestellten und dem Druck, ihre eigene Vergangenheit zu verbergen, versucht sie herauszufinden, was wirklich hinter der Fassade des Luxusresorts steckt. Ihre zwei goldenen Regeln – „Sei auf alles vorbereitet“ und „Traue niemandem“ – werden auf eine harte Probe gestellt.
Nicola Martin gelingt es mit einem temporeichen Schreibstil, kurzen Kapiteln und ständig neuen Wendungen, einen echten Pageturner zu erschaffen. Die Handlung wird aus Lolas Perspektive erzählt, was die Leser:innen unmittelbar in das Geschehen hineinzieht. Gleichzeitig bleibt die Protagonistin bis zum Schluss ambivalent – ist sie Opfer, Täterin oder beides? Diese moralische Grauzone verleiht der Figur Tiefe und dem Plot zusätzliche Spannung.
Besonders gelungen ist auch die Darstellung der sozialen Kontraste: Während die privilegierten Gäste auf Champagner und Sonnenuntergänge blicken, kämpft das Personal ums Überleben – ein Mikrokosmos der Ungleichheit, in dem Gier und Macht alle Regeln außer Kraft setzen. Das Setting, so verführerisch es auf den ersten Blick scheint, entwickelt sich zur perfekten Bühne für einen modernen Thriller, der mehr zu sagen hat, als bloß zu unterhalten.
Fazit:
The Island – Auf der Flucht ist ein atmosphärisch dichter Thriller mit exotischem Setting, vielschichtigen Figuren und einem Sog, dem man sich schwer entziehen kann. Nicola Martin beweist ein feines Gespür für Spannung, Psychologie und das Spiel mit Schein und Sein. Ein perfekter Sommerkrimi – aber definitiv nichts für schwache Nerven oder allzu verträumte Reisesehnsüchte.

„The Island - Auf der Flucht“ von Nicola Martin
Die Hotelmanagerin Lola verlässt ihren Arbeitsplatz in einem Hongkonger Luxushotel überstürzt und flieht, mit der Hilfe eines früheren Kollegen, auf eine kleine Karibikinsel, die Luxus-Resort und zugleich Privatinsel eines Milliardärs. Leider ist besagter Kollege schon kurz nach Lolas Ankunft tot. Und damit beginnen die Schwierigkeiten erst. Fangen wir mit dem Positiven an: Die Darstellung des karibischen Luxus-Settings gelingt der Autorin gut, daran ist wenig auszusetzen. Dass Lola nicht spontan mein Herz eroberte, konnte ich verschmerzen. Unangenehmer fand ich die deutlichen Längen in der Darstellung und das – für meinen Geschmack – zu zähe ‚heraus prökeln‘ des Hintergrundes, der zu Lolas spontanem Arbeitsplatzwechsel geführt hatte. Ander als im Klappentext versprochen, war dies kein „Blutbad“, sondern ein einziger Mord, den ein halbwegs begabter Strafverteidiger auch zu erweiterter Notwehr hätte herunterreden können.
Der Mittelteil des Kriminalromans (nein, lieber Verlag, nur, weil ihr ‚Thriller‘ drauf schreibt, wird das Buch nicht automatisch ein Page-turner!) zog sich dann. Ein bißchen mehr Suspense hätte es dann schon sein dürfen. Die Figuren blieben mir insgesamt zu blaß, da fehlte mir die Liebe zum Detail. Personen haben nicht nur einen Namen, sondern einen Gang, einen Geruch, eine Art, die Gabel zu halten, zu fluchen, hundert Kleinigkeiten, die Menschen plastischer macht.
Im letzten Drittel beeilte sich die Autorin dann, ein paar Leichen oder wenigstens halbherzige Mordversuche nachzuliefern, was mich mit der Geschichte ein klein wenig versöhnte.
Schlussendlich ist „The Island“ ein lesenswerter Kriminalroman, wenn man keine ausgefeilten Charakterstudien erwartet und mit einer mittelmäßig spannenden Motivlage zufrieden ist. Eigentlich ist das Buch die perfekte Strandlektüre, in der man auch mal zehn Seiten vorblättern kann, ohne gleich ein schlechtes Gewissen haben zu müssen. Man liest es und wird es nach dem Urlaub vergessen. Das ist okay, aber eben auch nicht mehr.

*The Getaway* completely took me by surprise! Initially, I wasn’t sure it would be my kind of read, but the deeper I got, the more I was pulled in, thanks to the complex character development. Each person’s backstory unfolds gradually, showing not just why they ended up on Keepers Island, but why they’re compelled to stay.

Keepers Island seems like a luxurious paradise for the elite—a perfect escape. But underneath the glamorous façade, darkness simmers. Secrets are deeply rooted in the island and its residents, and Lola, the driven main character, is relentless in her mission to uncover them all. Her pursuit of the truth kept me fully invested, and watching her piece together the mystery was gripping.

The plot twists genuinely caught me off guard. Every time I thought I had it figured out, the story would take a new turn, keeping me on my toes. Nicola Martin has a talent for world-building; her descriptions of the eerie beauty of Keepers Island create a striking contrast between the lush paradise and the dark events unfolding there. The setting is vivid and atmospheric, almost a character in its own right—isolated and dangerous, a place where paradise holds sinister secrets.

What initially drew me to *The Getaway* was the striking cover and intriguing blurb, but the story itself exceeded my expectations. Martin’s pacing and suspense-building kept me guessing all the way through. While the novel is intense, it has moments of dark humor that add some levity, balancing the tension perfectly.

If I had one critique, it would be the number of side characters. While I was deeply invested in Lola and loved the dynamic among the standout staff members (Diara, Kip, and Fizzy were especially memorable), a few background characters felt unnecessary. That said, some of the wealthy, entitled guests added humor and a touch of absurdity that lightened the darker tones.

In the end, *The Getaway* delivered a thoroughly engaging mystery with an eerie, immersive atmosphere. Martin’s skill in keeping readers in suspense is remarkable, and I’d highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a layered mystery with rich character dynamics.

Wenn Luxus zum Problem wird

Die Hotelmanagerin Lola hat in Hongkong ein schweres Problem, welches sich anders löst als sie gehofft hat. Für sie gilt es die Flucht zu ergreifen und an einem anderen Ort einen Neustart zu versuchen. Ihr Freund Moxham kann da aushelfen und lädt sie auf Keeper Island ein, die Trauminsel für die ganz Reichen, auf der jeder Wunsch erfüllt wird. Das vermeintliche neue Glück stellt sich aber schnell als Alptraum dar, als die Leiche von Moxham im Meer gefunden wird. Lola glaubt den Vermutungen, dass es sich um einen Unfall handeln sollte, nicht und macht sich auf die Suche nach den Geheimnissen auf der Insel, ohne zu ahnen, auf welche menschlichen Abgründe sie dabei stößt...

Die prämierte amerikanische Autorin Nicola Martin hat mit "The Island - Auf der Flucht" einen aus meiner Sicht spannenden Thriller veröffentlicht. Sie erzählt die Geschichte in einem leicht zugängigen und flüssig zu lesenden Schreibstil und arbeitet viel mit der direkten Rede. Der Spannungsbogen wird mit dem Tod des Ressource-Chefs gut aufgebaut und kann dann nach anfänglichen Schwierigkeiten auf einem guten Niveau gehalten werden. Gerade die erste Hälfte des Buches zog sich aufgrund vieler Protagonisten und vermeintlicher Nichtigkeiten ein wenig in die Länge, während das Tempo danach deutlich angezogen wurde und die Spannung somit auch deutlich in die Höhe ging. Das Ganze bleibt ein wenig verworren und die vielen Optionen laden zum Miträtseln bezüglich Täter und Tathintergründe ein. das fulminante Finale rundet das Buch mit einer nachvollziehbaren Auflösung gelungen ab.

Insgesamt ist "The Island - Auf der Flucht" für mich ein ordentlicher Thriller, der mir einige spannende Lesestunden bescherte. Die Autorin Nicola Martin kann mit einem ordentlichen tempo und einer komplex konstruierten Geschichte überzeugen. Ich empfehle den Spannungsroman daher gerne weiter und bewerte ihn mit guten vier von fünf Sternen.

Didn't quite get to 4 stars for me because although I enjoyed it, still felt like some things were missing. Overall good read, considering the author is still on her first books, excited to see what comes next!

Highlights
▪️The author is really immersive with the setting. I, as a reader, really could imagine the island vividly which is something I sometimes struggle with.

▪️Mysteries and twists did manage to captivate. Although not 100% surprising, the ending did surprise me, especially the little reveal at the very end. Excited to see more 🤞🏻

▪️Fast paced which helped me stay commited to it.

▪️The characters don't feel like a complete cliché and that's a really good compliment. With these kinds of books, I'm always bored with the side characters and suspects because it starts to get repetitive so, in a way, it was nice having some touches of originality.

Downsides
▪️Didn't really connect with characters, felt like they were somewhat superficial. Lola, as mc, didn't spoke to me. Although she did feel relatable at times, some decisions/ways of thinking were off putting. I will say that her being in the gray area did seem really interesting and would be a nice future idea to explore. Her relationship dynamic does give red flags but I couldn't help to be intrigued by the couples' reunion, which I wish I'd seen/read.

▪️A lot of the chapters end in an action and the following will have some time jump, however minimum, right after. Started to get old, because it got disorientating for me never having the action just continuously happening. A random example: chapter finishes with her finding something about the murder. Next chapter, hours pass and she's now organising a wedding, with no initial mention of the previous action. It works really well in suspense books, I know, because it keeps you on your toes but every single chapter is exhausting.

. Aber worum geht es genau…
Lola, ehemals Hotelmanagerin in Hong Kong möchte nach einen fatalen Vorfall einen Neuanfang starten. Ihr ehemaliger Kollege Moxham arbeiten mittlerweile auf einer Privatinsel, wo er ihr einen Job besorgt. Lola denkt sie hat das Blutbad hinter sich gelassen, doch ein paar Tage nach ihrer Ankuft wird Moxhams Leiche gefunden.

. In „The Island“ folgen Lola als Ich- Erzählerin auf ihrer Reise. Wir lernen sie sehr gut kennen und sie wurde mir sehr sympathisch! Auch wenn sie an einigen Stellen ein wenig naiv durch die Geschichte gewandert ist. Ich denke jedoch, das macht den Lauf der Story aus, sonst wäre das Buch wahrscheinlich viel kürzer geworden.
Auch die anderen Charaktere sind realistisch dargestellt und haben alle ihre individuellen Facetten und Beziehungen.
Als Leser steigen wir direkt ins Geschehen ein und es geht daraufhin immer rasant weiter, wobei ich die ersten knapp 200 Seiten eher nach Krimi geschrieen haben und nicht nach Thriller. Dies änderte sich dann jedoch schlagartig und ich habe mich sehr gefreut. Ab diesem Augenblick konnte ich das Buch nur schwer aus der Hand legen. Es wurde unerwartete düster und brutal!
Das Ende fand ich sehr gelungen.

Ebenso bin ich ein großer Fan des Buchcovers! Es zieht direkt die Blicke auf sich und schreit nach Mord am Strand! Sehr gelungen.

Lola muss dringend weg aus Hongkong. Als ihr alter Freund Moxham ihr einen Job im Paradies, auf Keeper Island, anbietet, nimmt sie kurzentschlossen an. Doch kaum dort angekommen ist sie schon wieder von Tod, Geheimnissen und Intrigen umgeben.

Meinung
Die Geschichte war auf jeden Fall spannend, aber auch recht nüchtern erzählt.
Es gibt Geheimnisse in Lolas Vergangenheit und auch auf der Insel läuft irgendetwas Merkwürdiges ab. Und man möchte durchschauen, was passiert ist, wer darin verwickelt ist und folgt gemeinsam mit Lola den Spuren. Irgendwie beäugt man jeden den man trifft misstrauisch. Und irgendwann war ich mir auch nicht mehr sicher, ob man Lola überhaupt vertrauen kann. Das hat mich sehr neugierig auf die Auflösung gemacht.
Zwischendurch gab es aber einige Längen, weil die Story nicht so richtig voran kam.
Manches Mal wurden Szenen ausführlich beschrieben, die die Geschichte nicht weiter bringen und spannende Details wurden dann nur kurz abgehandelt.
Am Ende gibt es dann noch einen Showdown, der mich gefesselt hat, aber nicht wirklich begeistern konnte.
Was mich auch gestört hat war, dass das Hotelsetting für mich nicht sehr realistisch dargestellt wurde. Die Arbeitsabläufe waren unlogisch. Die meiste Zeit war das Personal im Personalcamp. Es wurde sich zwar über lästige Gäste beschwert und Partys ausgerichtet, aber bei denen haben die Angestellten immer mitgefeiert, anstatt wirklich zu arbeiten. Und ich wusste die ganze Zeit nicht, was eigentlich Lolas Aufgabe war.
Die meisten Gäste und Angestellten, die man trifft, konnte ich kaum unterscheiden, weil sie so austauschbar waren, weshalb es manchmal auch schwierig war Lolas Nachforschungen zu folgen.

Fazit
Eine spannende Idee, mit einer unterschwelligen Spannung, aber zu vielen Schwachstellen.

A well executed novel. It is tight with twists and turns on every page. Even the epilogue delivered a nice twist. Could there be room for an sequel perhaps. The plot begins with Lola london escaping from Hong Kong to Keeper Island, a luxury five star resort for the rich and famous. Her previous boss and partner in crime has offered her sanctuary from her murderous boyfriend Nathan and her job as manager at a hotel. Their history involves shake downs of their guests at the hotel. Moxham, her ex boss greets her at the themed party "Alice in Wonderland" and in his drunken state warns her against trusting anyone on the island. Not surprisingly the following morning he winds up dead and the owner of the island, the billionaire Kip Clements declares it an accident. It seems that everything untoward at the resort is treated as an accident, including the death of his wife Meredith by drowning.
As Lola attempts to find out the truth surrounding his murder/accident on a jet ski we learn that he has continued as a scam artist videoing people and blackmailing them afterwards. The second death after another themed "gold" party signals that Moxham was not working alone and that that murderer is after his accomplice. There are no shortages of suspects including the staff and guests and it soon becomes evident that Lola can not trust anyone.
There are some really interesting insights into the behind the scenes of managing a luxury resort as we see the whining guests and impossible demands forced upon the staff. Martin has a brilliant style in her construction of the most unsavoury characters. Some of which bare a striking resemblance to tourists we have all met before on holiday.
Very enjoyable read and one I recommend. Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this.

Schon das Cover hat mich magisch angezogen – die knalligen Farben und der geheimnisvolle Titel haben sofort meine Neugier geweckt. Als ich dann den Klappentext las, war es endgültig um mich geschehen. Ich griff direkt zur Leseprobe – und die war blitzschnell verschlungen. Danach war klar: Ich muss dieses Buch haben! Zum Glück habe ich es bekommen – und ich bereue keine einzige Seite.
Der Schreibstil ist angenehm flüssig, der Spannungsbogen packend von Anfang bis Ende. Im Mittelpunkt steht Lola, die aus Hongkong flieht und der Einladung ihres ehemaligen Chefs Moxham auf die abgelegene Insel Keeper Island folgt – ein scheinbares Paradies. Doch schon einen Tag nach ihrer Ankunft ist Moxham tot. Unfall oder Mord? Die Umstände bleiben mysteriös, die Angestellten der Insel schweigen, und Lola beginnt, auf eigene Faust zu ermitteln.
Je tiefer sie in die Geheimnisse der Insel eindringt, desto gefährlicher wird es für sie. Misstrauen, Lügen und dunkle Machenschaften kommen ans Licht – niemand scheint wirklich ehrlich zu sein. Auch Lola selbst trägt ein dunkles Geheimnis mit sich, das sie aus Hongkong vertrieben hat. Keeper Island entpuppt sich als trügerisches Paradies voller verborgener Abmachungen und düsterer Wahrheiten.
Das Finale ist ebenso überraschend wie schockierend – ich habe mit vielem gerechnet, aber definitiv nicht damit! Ein echter Pageturner, bei dem man bis zur letzten Seite miträtselt – und sich am Ende eingestehen muss, komplett danebengelegen zu haben (so wie ich, lach).
Fazit:
Ein absolutes Must-Read für alle Thriller-Fans! Hochspannend, atmosphärisch und voller überraschender Wendungen – dieses Buch gehört definitiv in jedes Bücherregal!

This was a fun read for a cold weather month, as it takes place on a private Caribbean island, and it definitely felt like it was transporting me to the British Virgin Islands rather than the freezing midwest. I would say this would be a great read alike for someone looking for something similar to the White Lotus franchise on HBO. This had very similar vibes, which I really liked.

Like at the White Lotus, Keeper Island has a wide range of characters ranging from the super wealthy guests to the local staff, and most of these characters have something to hide or some sort of personal drama that motivates them. Again, like White Lotus, this is an International cast of characters, as this kind of exclusive resort attracts both staff and visitors from all over the world. I feel like this book would have really benefited from multiple POVs, which we did not get. I think, because it was giving White Lotus vibes, I wanted to be in the rooms (so to speak) with some of the guests and really hear their inner monologues, but we really are only seeing this all play out through Lola's eyes.

The plot was decent, though I felt like there were some weak points. The intrigue was decently written. Since we were only in Lola's head, and she is in no way a detective, it definitely keeps you guessing as to who dunnit. That being said, sometimes I felt like it was a little TOO convoluted. In the end, this was a very enjoyable read. I liked the tropical island aspect and the White Lotus vibes, and the mystery/thriller aspects were decently done.

Angetrieben durch eine schockierende Tat und auf Wunsch eines früheren Freundes zieht Lola kurzerhand nach Keepers Island. Berauscht von der Insel, den Mitarbeitern und dem Luxus den sie erleben darf, scheint sie die Vergangenheit loslassen zu können-bis ein Todesfall die Insel in Aufruhr versetzt.
Als Lola über Nacht Managerin des Resorts wird, beginnt sir zu hinterfragen, ob dieser Tod ein Unfall war.
Die Insel birgt unheimlich viele Geheimnisse. Und es bleibt nicht nur bei einem Todesfall.

Das Buch hat mir gefallen. Die Atmosphäre eines Luxusresorts auf einer privaten Insel im Pazifik macht Lust auf Sommer.
Ich finde auch die Perspektive von Lola als Managerin des Resorts erfrischend. Fur mich hat sich keine Sympathie gegenüber sämtlichen Charakteren entwickelt (außer vielleicht bei Allie und Flora). Die Story entsteht eher durch die Geschehnisse als durch die Protagonisten. Das sorgt für ein schnelles Lesetempo.
Einige Situationen kamen mir etwas zusammenhanglos, zu undurchschaubar und unklar vor.
Ich war zudem etwas irritiert von gewissen Verhaltensweisen, die aus meiner Sicht nicht stimmig sind ("über die Lippen lecken).
Alles in allem ist dieses Buch ein eher entspannter Thriller, der bestenfalls am Pool, in der prallen Sonne und mit einem fruchtigen Cocktail gelesen werden sollte.

Protagonistin Lola flieht nach einem traumatischen Vorfall in Hongkong auf die abgelegene Keeper Island, wo sie einen Neuanfang wagen will. Doch kaum angekommen, wird ihr klar, dass auch hier dunkle Geheimnisse lauern.

Der Einstieg ist ruhig, fast trügerisch idyllisch, doch die Spannung nimmt stetig zu. Die Autorin versteht es, nach und nach eine dichte Atmosphäre aufzubauen. Das Setting wirkt wie aus einem Reisemagazin, aber hinter der perfekten Fassade brodelt es gewaltig. Jeder scheint etwas zu verbergen, und Lola gerät immer tiefer in ein Netz aus Misstrauen, Intrigen und Mord.

Besonders überzeugend ist die psychologische Tiefe der Figuren. Lola ist eine starke, aber auch verletzliche Hauptfigur, die trotz ihrer Ängste nicht aufgibt. Die Rückblenden in ihre Vergangenheit fügen sich organisch in die Handlung ein und machen sie noch greifbarer. Auch wenn nicht alle Nebenfiguren sympathisch wirken, tragen sie zur dichten Spannung bei.

Einziger kleiner Kritikpunkt: Der Epilog war für meinen Geschmack nicht nötig und hat das ansonsten runde Ende etwas verwässert. Dennoch bleibt der Gesamteindruck sehr positiv.

Ein atmosphärischer Thriller mit toller Kulisse, spannender Handlung und einer Protagonistin, mit der man mitfiebert. Perfekt für alle, die psychologische Spannung und undurchsichtige Figuren lieben.

Trau keinem im Paradies
Lola muss schnell aus Hongkong und ihrem letzten Job verschwinden. Dank ihres ehemaligen Kollegen Moxham hat sie einen neuen Job als stellvertretende Hotelmanagerin auf einer Insel im Paradies. Ein Paradies auf Erden für Reiche scheint die Insel zu sein, nicht jedoch für die Angestellten, die in einer heruntergekommenen Unterkunft untergebracht sind.

Bereits der erste Satz des Buches lässt die Dekadenz ahnen, die auf der Insel herrscht, als Lola gleichzeitig mit Champagnerkisten und Trüffeln im Boot ankommt. Dass der Beluga-Kaviar nicht ankommt, ist ein Riesenproblem. Doch bald tauchen wirkliche Probleme auf. Moxham wird ermordet und Lola findet ihn. Sie versucht, gemeinsam mit ihrer Zimmerkollegin, den Mörder zu ermitteln. Moxham hat sie gewarnt: sei auf alles vorbereitet und trau keinem. Leider beherzigt Lola das nicht. Sowohl die Gäste als auch die anderen Angestellten sind nicht so, wie sie scheinen.

Den Anfang fand ich spannend, da die Frage, warum Lola so plötzlich aus Hongkong fliehen musste, zunächst offen blieb. Die Spannung flaut jedoch ziemlich ab und nach ca. einem Drittel des Buches war ich mir nicht sicher, ob ich weiterlesen sollte. Die Handlung nahm aber noch einmal Fahrt auf und wurde spannend, obgleich mich die Erzählung nicht so überzeugt hat. Lola war mir zu naiv und vertrauensselig.

Mein Fazit: Kein schlechtes Buch, aber auch keines, das man gelesen haben muss.

The Getaway is the second novel from Nicola Martin, following her debut thriller Dead Ringer, and as evidenced from the evocative colourful cover art, it focuses on the darker side hidden beneath the wealth and glamour of the luxury hospitality sector. The novel’s title is a double-entendre highlighting both the isolated holiday locale of its British Virgin Island setting, and also the fact that the lead protagonist Lola is escaping a traumatic incident in her recent past. Martin’s novel deftly balances the opulence of the Keeper Island resort against the mundane existence of its working staff in a familiar upstairs/downstairs manner. However, despite the huge wealth gap between the staff and the guests, there is one thing unites the two groups – they all have their own dirty, little secrets, and someone on the island is willing to kill to protect theirs.

The Getaway is primarily a murder mystery set on a paradise island where everyone is a suspect, and Martin does a great job at ensuring her central ‘whodunnit’ has plenty of twists and turns. The investigation and drip-feeding of clues is impeccably timed, which each new revelation reframing the behaviour and motivations of characters. With her own mysterious past, Lola is introduced to the reader as something of an enigma; what is she running away from and is she capable of murder herself? Initially, Lola comes across as strong-willed, ambitious and motivated in her professional life, but less so in her personal life, to the extent where she suffers from panic attacks that leave her practically paralyzed with fear. Martin does a great job at making Lola into a multi-faceted character, juxtaposing her efficiency at her job as a resort host with the chaotic way she copes with her private life and past. I really enjoyed my time with Lola, and witnessing the growth in character she undergoes throughout the novel, especially in regards to resolving her issues with her past.

Alongside the murder-mystery element, Martin also gives us a realistic view of what it is like to work in the tourism industry, catering to the whims of the ultra-rich and privileged. While it might seem desirable to work on a tropical island surrounded by affluence and excess, the staff are often presented as tools to facilitate the desires of the guests. When one of the staff members ends up dead, and the event is quickly covered up as an accident and Lola suspects foul-play and begins her investigations into what happened, discovering conspiracies and blackmail lying underneath the resort’s glossy façade. With almost every guest and member of staff carrying their own dark secrets, each chapter is packed full of dramatic revelations that keep the pages turning. Martin’s writing style is extremely cinematic and skillfully maintains the pace of the investigation throughout the novel by dropping plenty of new clues. While I did predict part of the ending midway through the book, Martin throws in enough additional twists to keep it from being too obvious, with a surprising epilogue that adds an extra layer to the killer’s motivations.

With its fun twist on the ‘death in paradise’ trope, The Getaway is a brilliant sun-kissed thriller filled with enjoyable characters and an engaging central mystery. By blending its investigative story-arc with the mundanities of working in hospitality, The Getaway feels unique in a sea of ultra-dark and gritty thrillers on the bookshelves, to the point where the bright pastel colours of its cover artwork immediately draw you in. Immensely fun and expertly constructed, this is the perfect crime thriller to live vicariously through and imagine life amongst the luxury.

Das Buch war eine tolle Lektüre, ich habe es wirklich genossen, obwohl ich noch bei den ersten paar Kapiteln nicht dachte, dass es nicht so mein Ding wäre. Aber was es für mich wirklich rausgeholt hat, war die Tiefe so vieler Charaktere. Das ganze Buch war eine kontinuierliche Entwicklung der Hintergrundgeschichte jedes einzelnen Charakters, warum sie es auf diese besondere Insel geschafft haben und was sie dort gehalten hat.

Zu Beginn des Buches wird die Insel als ein wunderschöner Ort dargestellt, ein Traumurlaubsort für die Besten der Besten, und das ist sie auch. Doch schnell merkt man, dass nicht alles so ist, wie es scheint und dass jeder etwas vor den anderen verbirgt. Lola ist entschlossen, die dunklen Geheimnisse, den Mörder und das Mysterium aufzudecken, und das ist es, was mich wirklich weiterlesen ließ.

Ich liebte die Wendungen bei jeder Gelegenheit und egal, wie sehr ich miträtselte und die Geschichte weiter fortschritt, ich wusste nicht, wo die Geschichte wohl enden würde. Ursprünglich hatte ich 3 Sterne vergeben, aber nach reiflicher Überlegung bin ich auf 4 Sterne hochgestiegen, und zwar allein wegen der Welt und der Charakterentwicklung, die sich durch das ganze Buch bis zum Ende zieht.

Eine tolle Lektüre, es lohnt sich auf jeden Fall, sie in die Hand zu nehmen!
