HUNTING NIGHTMARISH CREATURES BEFORE THEY SPILL INTO OUR WORLD…
In Evergreen Dread, rookie Fish and Wildlife Agent Alex Kelso is dispatched to categorize abnormal fish at a shuttered WWII secret atomic site in Washington state. A reptilian monster, nurtured by decades of secret nuclear waste, awakens leading Kelso to battle it preventing it’s escape into the nearby Columbia River which runs across seven U.S. states. Soon she is asked to look into other strange creatures reported across the Pacific Northwest to separate myth from deadly reality. Each of the five cases test the limits of sanity as often her biggest threats come from unseen places.
With each new case, Agent Kelso begins to sense there is something evil awaiting her in Seattle, as a new cult works its way across the Emerald city shedding victims and terror. Worse yet, a door from the spiritual realm has opened releasing something apocalyptic upon Seattle. With little time, few resources, and depraved creatures still stalking her every move, Agent Kelso must leap into the dark to try to save humanity’s last seconds. Victory might come too late. Failure means the end of times.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Special Agent Alex Kelso has been recruited to work with the FBI’s Unique Investigations Department, in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. She is called in because of her zoology knowledge and experience. She soon discovers that the creatures she has been sent to investigate are dangerous cryptids! She finds herself investigating a variety of unique beasts such as the Trinity Terror Serpent, a banshee, the Cascade Tiger, Sasquatch, and even a leviathan. Whether they were created naturally through evolution, unnaturally through environmental disasters, supernaturally, or intentionally designed, Kelso must handle each of these cases.
In doing so, Kelso must also deal with some pretty unsavory human characters. Several of them want to destroy humanity as we know it. Her reputation becomes tarnished during some of this investigative work. Despite this, she realizes that she must stay involved because many lives are being lost, and the fate of humankind is in jeopardy.
“Evergreen Dread,” is a spine-tingling novel written by Victor Marrow. It held my attention from the very first page until the last! Marrow has incorporated incredibly unique ideas into this horror novel. Throughout most of it, he maintains a sense of unease and dread. It permeates throughout the pages. I found myself wondering if perhaps it wasn’t the best choice of reading material before I went to sleep.
This story is mostly set in beautiful rural parts of the Pacific Northwest. The vivid descriptions help bring it to life. Seeing that there are sinister and dangerous events taking place adds greatly to the drama. There are secrets that can no longer stay hidden. It is these foreboding underlying currents that make “Evergreen Dread,” so much more fun to read.
I like that the book flowed well through the different investigations. Each case has its own drama to be resolved before the story moves on. I found each section to be intriguing and was impressed with the uniqueness behind each idea.
All the characters are richly drawn. The protagonist is a strong female character who finds herself in over her head. She must draw upon her inner strength to prevail throughout terrifying and dangerous situations. Her indigenous heritage and her grandfather’s military background have helped train her well for the unusual events that she must survive. The supporting cast also contributes greatly to the drama, whether they be friend or foe. I enjoyed the protagonist’s interactions with many of them. I hope to revisit with several of them again, in future works by Marrow.
“Evergreen Dread” is a must-read for fans of horror and/or suspense. Victor Marrow has created a truly exceptional novel that is sure to become a favorite for readers of these genres. He is a masterful storyteller. I look forward to reading other works by this talented author.
If you like The X-Files or Stranger Things, read this book! The action is fast-paced and episodic with monsters that will keep you flipping pages. Fans of H.P. Lovecraft and F. Paul Wilson should give this book a try and see what lurks in Washington state. Evergreen Dread should be on every horror fan’s radar!
Oh this is a great introduction to Kelso, not a born hero but the right person in the wrong place at the wrong time .monsters, action,it's monsters, more action.Loved it and I look forward to a whole series .
If you liked the first seasons of X-Files or Supernatural, you're going to love the first half of this book! The first three cases are so reminiscent of the "monster of the week" trope that these shows did so well and the action is crazy and fun. But then at the halfway mark...
What was up with the billionaire? There's so much positive momentum and then it all crashes to a stop as we're introduced to a cliche-filled character who wants revenge? That section is so awful and almost feels like a different book. This five-star read suddenly dropped to a one-star mess.
Once we get through that section, the story sort of goes crazy. From nuclear snake to end-of-the-world crazy. The dialogue becomes more like something you'd hear in one of the Fast and Furious movies and plenty of the plot points make little sense. But at least we get our ending.
It's mostly a fun read and the protagonist is easy to root for. If monsters and your thing...
This reminded me of the early Pendergast novels from Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child with a bit of Scully from the X Files thrown in. Monster + field agent + supernatural elements = a fun, fast paced read. I loved that the book focused on a series of strong women, from Alex Kelso as an entertaining main character to Officer Lucy Stone to Detective Marano, they were each bad**s in their own ways and made for an enjoyable read.
Evergreen Dread is about a wildlife officer who, after killing a nuclear beast, is recruited to a special post dealing with unexplained phenomenon. There are 5 separate, but connected stories, each with its own mystery overall, its a fun, fast paced book fans of supernatural horror and thrillers will enjoy. 4/5 stars!
