I read the reviews before purchasing this book, but what I didn't see were reviews mentioning the terrible editing. I honestly felt like I was reading an uncorrected ARC. I can tell the author loves Nantucket and was anxious to dig into the story, but the errors were hard to get past.
I'm not sure why no one else that left glowing reviews seems bothered about the lack of editing, but maybe they're friends of the author. I am NOT someone that trashes people's work on the regular because I know how very much hard work goes into writing a book and getting it published, but the errors in this book were egregious and someone needs to say something.
There were continuity errors - Rob met with the Sheriff on Friday originally and then when he was meeting with him on the following Monday, the Sheriff asked what changed since yesterday (or words to that effect.) It wasn't yesterday (Sunday) when he saw Rob the first time, it was Friday. There was another continuity error that was very similar, but I can't recall the exact details at this moment.
There were places where a sentence ended without punctuation, places where there were 2 quotation marks at the beginning of a sentence and none at the end, places where a question mark was required, but a period used, I could go on and on. At one point Rob was called by the name Jack and at times it seemed the author forgot what voice he was writing in.
So why the 3 stars? I'm trying hard to be fair and would likely have given this 2.5 stars so I rounded to 3. While the story was rather far-fetched, it held my interest and I hung in there through the end because I wanted to know how it ended.
I do feel that there was an too much reliance on a ghost to solve the mystery. Essentially law enforcement did nothing but show up in the book. And the part where Tuna has to explain domestic violence and how a victim of that often feels to the Sheriff I found rather strange. The Sheriff should be well-versed in things such as domestic violence and its impact on victims. I took that to be the author wanting to get his point across but not knowing how else to share what he knew about domestic violence. The better choice would have been for one of the two law enforcement officers to be sharing that knowledge with someone whose job doesn't require them to know these things.
Will I read another book by this author? I do not honestly know. If you don't mind reading past poor editing and proofreading, then by all means, give this story a shot. If that bothers you, as it does me, you may want to pass this one by. For $4.99 the product should be professional, at the very least. I'd be shocked if an editor was used. To the author: If you are reading this, please employ a professional proofreader.
