Spheres of Influence: How to Create and Nurture Authentic Business Relationships

Rate this book
Brad Englert has written Spheres of How to Create and Nurture Authentic Business Relationships to help emerging leaders develop and perfect what he calls the “critical hard skill” of building effective and enduring business relationships.

There are two major parts to the book. The first part of the book focuses on the “internal sphere of influence,” those people with whom readers can have the most direct relationship with the boss, relationships with executive leaders, relationships with direct reports, and relationships with all staff. In the second part, Englert focuses on the “external sphere of influence,” and explores relationships where readers have less direct impact. These include relationships with customers, relationships with peers and influencers, and finally, relationships with strategic vendor partners. The real-world stories in this book are relevant to a diverse range of industries, organizations, and backgrounds. In these pages, emerging and aspiring leaders will learn how to build authentic, mutually beneficial, trusting, and enduring relationships spanning years and even decades.

I had the opportunity to listen to this audiobook provided by NetGalley. My first impression was this would be a great book to listen to on your daily commute to work. The narrator is clear and interesting. Along with the content he kept my interest in the book.

The book provides many ideas and suggestions you can incorporate in your work life. I found it mostly focused on a middle management type role where you have both a manager and direct reports. One of suggestions that resonated with me was the importance of focusing on family. Not all employers think family is important but I feel the ones that do have a much happier and productive workplace. A great resource for those managers looking to improve their team.

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to review this book.

Thank you NetGalley and Greenleaf Audiobooks for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.

Brad Englert has worked in a variety of consulting and direct managing roles throughout his career in the information technology space. That experience has led him to understand what he calls Spheres of Influence or the different types of relationships you have in your life. From “internal spheres” like those directly above and below you in the company hierarchy to “external spheres” like those with vendors or customers, it is important to understand how to navigate these relationships to reach your goals successfully. Englert utilizes stories from his own personal experience to provide examples of how the reader can influence their connections and understand the influence these connections have on them as well.

I give Spheres of Influence 5 out of 5 stars. While Englert’s experience may be in information technology, this book is an invaluable resource for those in any field. This book felt as those I was reading the transcript of a keynote address from a management conference. The straightforward advice on how to influence connections is similar to sales training in many large organizations, but Englert applies to more than just customers. I was especially interested in the section on influencing your direct supervisor – I have recently read quite a few books on influencing those you manage, but looking upstream was a new view for me!

This is a great read for anyone at any level in an organization. I would recommend this for team “book clubs” where a manager and their direct reports read the same book for team building. I would also recommend this to anyone looking to move up and interested in additional training or resources to prepare.

I have been looking for a book club pick to read along with my team leaders in my day job, so I was excited when I saw this available on NetGalley. One of the biggest challenges we struggle with on our team is bringing everyone together to focus on one goal. I am hopeful that Spheres of Influence will help us to grow as leaders and as a team!

Spheres of Influence is a helpful and knowledgeable book for those who are making their way in the corporate world and in business. I do think a lot of the information shared within can apply to other careers and workplaces, as well. I don't think a lot of the information is groundbreaking, but having it all concisely put in one book is helpful. Being transparent, communicative and authentic are traits that we don't see often enough in the working world. This is a great book for folks starting out in the working world and college aged individuals.

Designed to help emerging leaders, Brad Englert discusses the need for good business relationships inside and outside a company in his book, Spheres of Influence. Englert explains how to understand business needs while managing them efficiently and investing in the outcome. In two parts, he covers internal relationships with individuals, like your executive leaders, boss, and staff, and external connections, such as customers, peers, influencers, and vendor partners. With examples from his encounters, Englert describes what you can expect from a good business relationship and the signs that point to a less-than-ideal connection. The author emphasizes key points at the end of each chapter, noting an almost symbiotic relationship between employees and their leaders.

Brad Englert has delivered a strategic book in a conversational format that you can read by chapter or from start to finish. Englert teaches how to establish connections that are not one-sided by articulating your expectations, learning from feedback and performance reports, and ways to establish yourself while maintaining a work-life balance. His step-by-step guidance and book recommendations will strengthen your skills and sharpen your perspective. The author relates stories from his decades of experience, helping readers relate to the real-world application of his advice and turn it into authentic professional ties. Englert presents examples that may sound similar to your interactions with colleagues or associates, but each instance offers the opportunity to learn and adapt to make you outshine expectations. Spheres of Influence is a great selection for readers interested in gaining and maintaining steady and mutually profitable business relationships.

Everyone has two spheres of influence, an external and internal one. For internal spheres of influence, these include bosses, leadership, direct reports, coworkers, and friends. For external spheres, these are people that listeners only have an indirect influence on. Develop the leadership skill of influence, however, is a hard skill for most to learn. In the game of life, this skill can make or break key decisions. In this book, the author uses real world examples to teach listeners practical, effective strategies to build long lasting, effective, mutually beneficial relationships.

Experienced narrator, Fred Stella does a great job of bringing to life Englert’s thoughtful, helpful approach to influencing others. The tips are handy and help listeners to see influence through a unique perspective. A must-read for project managers, business people, and leaders. Recommended for most library collections.

Spheres of Influence focuses on building authentic and beneficial business relationships. I picked this up because I'm at a place in my career where fostering leadership connections is key to reaching my goals.

In this guide, the author gives extremely useful insights and tips for success in both internal and external business relationships. Although the content is based on navigating in formal corporate spaces, it is written in a very casual format that is easy to retain and provides thorough examples for real-world application.

I found this book to be a great resource and have already started to utilize many of these skills in the workplace. I plan to purchase a physical copy of this to have as a reference guide when it is released.

I highly recommend this book for people who are looking to thrive in their careers.

Thank you, NetGalley, for providing me with this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

In a world that is often ambiguous and disingenuous, full of individuals and organizations out for themselves, it was refreshing to read an alternative perspective that focused on a more transparent and collaborative approach. Englert showcases how to communicate in high-stakes situations with people in all directions (direct reports, bosses, and clients), and gives detailed examples, conversations, and resolutions that demonstrate how this approach can be effective. I enjoyed reading how a well-run organization could look, and how a "wounded" organization could heal with time and consistency.

My overall takeaway here was not anything new or mind-blowing, but rather a simple reminder to operate from a place of genuine care with regards to the people you work with.

With SPHERES OF INFLUENCE, Brad Englert has laid out a clear, comprehensive approach to building mission-critical and career-essential relationships. I wish I'd had this book when I started my career and am delighted to have it now. How refreshing to see genuine connection highlighted and discussed in such a clear and forthright manner rather than being relegated to low priority or dismissed as "networking." Timely and timeless. Firstly, a huge thank you to the publisher, Fast Company Press, the author, Brad Englert, and Goodreads for the privilege of winning a digital ARC copy of Spheres of Influence: How to Create and Nurture Authentic Business Relationships.

This book contains an exploration into the art and skill of cultivating meaningful and impactful professional connections. Englert, with a long background in technology and organizational leadership, distills his extensive experience into practical strategies for building and maintaining authentic business relationships.

The book is structured around three core principles that Englert emphasizes: understanding others' goals and aspirations, setting and managing expectations, and genuinely caring about their success. These principles are not just theoretical, but they are grounded in Englert's real-world experiences as a CIO and consultant. He offers actionable advice that can be applied across various business contexts alongside personal anecdotes.

One notable quote from the book encapsulates its real essence: “True leadership is not about having all the answers but about empowering others to find their own solutions and grow alongside you.” This sentiment is basically the book’s focus, pointing out empathy and collaboration and also highlighting how leaders can foster an environment of mutual respect and shared success.

One of the book's more valuable parts, in my opinion, is the focus on both internal and external spheres of influence. Englert discusses managing relationships with direct reports and executive leaders, which points out the importance of open communication and mutual accountability between the two. Englert’s discussion on external relationships like those with customers and vendors offers a fresh perspective on how to build those kinds of effective partnerships. His approach is a win-win strategy that could be a launching point for future successful business interactions. The book also addresses the importance of cultural alignment and intentionality in leadership. The author shares lots of personal examples, and includes some of his own experiences with significant organizational changes. In this way, he’s able to illustrate how leaders can effectively manage transitions and foster a culture of collaboration and trust.

Overall, Spheres of Influence is a good read for emerging leaders and seasoned professionals, anyone who has future expectations in the business world. I think it was a very succinct and not overly frilly business read with some great info to think on, and some good anecdotes to illustrate his points. I think most of the information could be found elsewhere, as there’s nothing here that’s particularly unique or powerful. It’s mostly the delivery that is a huge strength of this book.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an advance audio copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I wasn’t able to finish this book. It started well but veered into a lot of “I” stories and what I felt was an unachievable perfect management style for those who want to be managers or are new managers.

The book wasn’t for me, but it may be for you. My personal opinion should not sway you from your own.

Spheres of Influence was a cohesive and informative read. It explained how to create, improve and continue business relationships internally and externally. There information provided walks through the steps and keys to successfully communicate to managers, employees, vendors and more. It explains how to open up the lines of communication and how to use your abilities to improve the relationships with those around you in business.

This book was okay but didn’t meet my expectations. The concepts and skills are those readily available in other leadership books. In addition, it was extremely repetitive. By the end, I was skimming more than reading due to the monotonous nature of the chapters. The most valuable aspects of the book for me were other book and business article references.

My Bad But

I won this book from Goodreads. I was excited to read it but once I began I realized it is meant for executive type careers rather than self employed. But I do feel that it can be a great read for executives and managers.
