ARC Review - A Reign of Storm and Madness ✨ (Mortal Gods: Book 2)
5 ⭐️ 3 🌶️
Oh. My. Gods. What a F*CKING sequel! 👏🏼This book had me tossing and turning all night long after I completed it. Mostly because I wasn’t prepared for the ending and trust me when I say, it’s a DUESY!
Since I know there are so many of you that are waiting to start book 1 until book 2 is released, I am going to do my best to keep this spoiler free!
🔥A taste of what to expect from this sequel: * Badass pissed off FMC * Possessive, dark, moody, flipping CRAZY MMCs * Excellent plot that grows more and more * Rageful scheming * Multi demensional characters * Deception * HILLARIOUS banter * Snarky clap back comebacks from FMC 👏🏼 * Spice that just SLAYS 🥵 * ^ TWs with that said * MPOVs (but done flawlessly)
Picking up right where we left off in book 1, we find our leading lady, Kiera, stewing in her rageful haze after a hateful betrayal. In her current situation, she finds herself debating if the original assassination mission she was assigned to is even real.
Questioning everything she was told about this high $ assignment, she is all the while hating herself for getting too close to the Drakhaven brothers. Letting herself slip for a moments of weakness will not get her anywhere now, but Kiera finds that her fate is far more tangled with the dangerous brothers now more than she could possible imagine. If she abandons her mission now, her life is no longer the only one on the line.
These main characters are everything! Our MMCs (the dangerous trio of Drakehaven brothers) could not be more different, but keep their brotherhood above all else. Ruen, ever the calculating brooding eldest. Theos, the more sensitive yet protective youngest. And Kalix… What is it about an unhinged man who snaps a persons neck for their FMC that makes me feral? 🥵 Each one is sinfully delicious and makes me go weak in the knees!
These brothers find that they have one more thing in common besides their lineage- now that they’ve had a taste of Kiera, she is not getting away from their grasp… (I know some of y’all worry about “Why Choose” but this is done very well. Kiera has individual interactions with each brother so it’s not like multiple of them are in the room every time!)
Secrets are spilled, the deception is raging, this mission is about to go to hell because these men are devilishly tempting- but Kiera’s incredible personal growth over this book builds this plot page by page and it’s fantastic! I never wanted this book to end because every chapter was packed to the brim of amazing content! I couldn’t put down!
I cannot wait for more of y’all to read this series! (Yes, if I influence you to read this I expect constant updates) It is worth putting this baby at the TOP of your TBR list!
*Huge thank you to Lucy and her team for this ARC! I loved this installment and am very grateful for the opportunity!
Everyone’s either making life-ruining decisions or trying to kill each other—and somehow, it works.
For a book with “storm” and “madness” in the title, I expected more intensity. Sure, there’s action, and Kalix is still delightfully off his rocker, but beyond that? It’s a whole lot of noise without much substance. The plot twists come at you fast, but instead of keeping me on the edge of my seat, they left me shrugging (well, except that cliffy - less that I expected something like that to happen and more so the details of WHO it involved).
The characters felt stuck in place—no real growth, just more of the same brooding, scheming, and bad decision-making we’ve seen before.
And then there’s Kalix. And his deranged sense of right and wrong. Having to read about Kalix getting his rocks off while looking at TORN & BLEEDING FLESH, and then splooging all over open wounds was diabolical. And my eyes had TO READ all of it (I’m sorry eyes)….
As for *THAT OTHER SCENE*…in the bath…No dropping the soap around Kalix, ladies and gents…. 🧼
The intimacy between Kalix and Kiera borders on non-consensual, leaning too hard into the “unhinged alpha male” trope without fully acknowledging how uncomfortable it feels. It’s supposed to show Kalix’s obsessive nature, but it ends up feeling forced rather than intense.
And where was the groveling from Ruen?! I needed more. WAY more.
As for the spice? It’s there, and it’s what holds these characters together—because, honestly, without it, there’s not much else binding them. The brothers are all drawn to Kiera, but it’s mostly driven by lust, leaving their relationships feeling shallow. The writing does what it needs to, but lacks the depth to make the emotional beats stick. Overall, it’s fine if you’re already invested in the series, but don’t expect particularly moving.
THAT SAID…the series is still interesting, and I’m dying to know who Kiera’s parents are. I want it to be JUICY.

✨Preread
At this point I feel like Kalix just wants to unalive Kiera and wear her skin like a winter coat.
Also Ruen is such an ass I hope karma makes him her bitch in this book. 😤
When you read a lot, particularly a lot of the same genres, it can be really hard to find a new book, or series that is decent and has all of the elements you like. I'm happy to report that this was really, really good.
The world building works, and while it's not overly complex, that works in it's favour, particularly with the hints that there's a lot that has been hidden from people.
Kiera is a great anti-heroine type of character, and while she is far from perfect, she is believable and does the best she can in a situation where she can only roll with the punches.
The Darkhaven brothers are all well characterised as individuals and definitely morally grey. Kalix, in particular, is the darkest, but he's probably my favourite. The chemistry and push and pull between them all is developed at a believable pace across the two books so far, with some in spice for the spice lovers, and runs alongside the plot, rather than dominating it.
I highly recommend this series if you like well written romantasy with morally grey characters, with enough romance to keep that side of you happy, but an engaging over arching plot to go with it.
IMO it is a TRUE fantasy-driven dark why-choose romance with an honest to Gods slow burn?!
The plot… plots!
The characters a developed and interesting, and the story is still expanding and going deeper as opposed to staying surface level and only revolving around spice.
The writing is well-paced and though some of the twists I can see coming, I still like them!
This is the second book in the Mortal Gods, a dark fantasy romance series with gods, Demi-gods, and humans that explores themes of freedom, power and control. Tropes include why choose, an assassin FMC, hidden identity, familiars and so, so many secrets. This is a darker fantasy romance so please review the content warnings.
The Lovely: I loved this story and the characters. The plot is unique and held my interest all the way through the book. The FMC’s hidden identity increased the tension and while we see more of her sass and cunning nature, we also see her walls start to crack a bit around the Darkhaven brothers. We also learn a little more about the brothers’ history and how that shaped who they are now.
The Mundane: As with book one, there’s more of a focus on the plot and understanding the characters. There was less spice in this second book, compared to book one. Give. The FMC’s interactions with the MMCs I didn’t feel like the why choose element got to shine through. This is definitely more of a slowly growing or building why choose and I hope we really get to see it in book 3.
Rating: 4.5/5 Stars 2/5 Flames
Recommendation: I received an advance review copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. This book was an exciting ride and the reveal on the last page has me spiraling with theories and questions. There’s a fair amount of mystery to this story as the reader tried to fit the puzzle pieces together to figure out what’s happening now, and about the FMC’s past. I’m glad to report a release date for book 3 has been set - August 30, 2024. I love dark romantasy and why choose so put them together and this book did not disappoint.
So far, this is the best book in the series. I loved that we got more chapters with the brothers' POVs, was interesting. This series is very addicting I have discovered.
What an amazing continuation to the Mortal Gods series! It had everything I could have wanted, such as possessive MMCs, a vengeful FMC, hot as hell smut, and an incredibly entertaining plot!
I cannot get enough of the Darkhaven brothers! Kalix in particular because who doesn’t love a man who unalives people for their FMC without hesitation 😍🥵
I loved how the relationship between the brothers and Kiera was developed. While they still may not fully trust her, it is clear that their feelings are growing for her. I mean they have basically claimed her and yet they still deny each other (how stressful 😫)
One last thing…the ending! OMG! I definitely won’t spoil what happened but just know it’s gonna leave you craving for more 🤩
Thank you so much Lucinda Dark for sending me an ARC of this book 🫶
Oh wow, that ending! What does it all mean, and ouch, i felt that dagger in the back.
I am totally invested in this world. It has me in its emotional darkist steamy fantasy paws.
Darkish...well, maybe it is just dark. While the main characters are morally grey... dark grey. There are worst monsters and crimes out there. A lot of uncomfortable moments, the moments in real life shout unhealthy and trigger alert.... The bath house scene... and the information gathering mid smex scene... Talking about smex... again, wow, the passion, the descriptive smutty smex 🔥. The slight fantasy of the one our FMC hasn't been with yet.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!?!? The author is going to be the death of me.
*ARC reader of this book*
This installment picks up right where book one ended. I was dying to know what would happen to the FMC and how she would stay hidden in the academy. Well I can't spoil anything soooo.... Good luck reading everyone. You are going to need it.
This book, this FMC, and these brothers are my new obsession! I think I am completely in love with Kalix, and if you’ve read this book and love the dark, twisted nature of him, please join my club! 😂
I felt like this book really focused on Kiera’s relationship development with the 3 brothers. What I really liked was while this gives the vibes of a “why choose” reverse harem, the time Kiera spends with each brother is separate and allows us to really see how her relationship with each one grows in different ways, and how she can relate to each of them on a specific level.
I loved getting a deeper look into each of the brothers, especially Ruen and Kalix since these two are dangerous and more of a mystery and we already got a small glimpse into Theos in book one! If Kiera ends up leaving this trio by the end, I will happily take her place! The three personalities of the brothers compliment well, and Kiera’s sassy, no-bullshit attitude is what makes her a perfect FMC to pair with them.
The story captured my attention right away with the betrayal we leave off with in book one, the author wasted no time diving in, which was amazing! I felt that the pacing of the book and writing were good! My only, tiny, critic would be that I wish we got more of a glimpse into Kiera’s past and abilities, buuuuut that is definitely to come in the next book and I’m just impatient because I am so curious about her lineage 😂
I love that the FMC is so strong and independent, but you can see her start to soften as her relationships grow with not only the brothers, but others in the academy like Niall and Maeryn. The twist and deception that comes at the end kept me guessing until the very last page, LITERALLY
If you’re looking for a new dark fantasy romance, this is it!!
WAIT WHAT WHY ?? wtf is going on. not another intense cliffhanger ugh I need answers! the way this book ended quite literally had me stunned. AFTER ALL OF THIS, THIS IS WHAT YOU’RE LEAVING ME WITH LUCINDA? I’M GONNA BE INSUFFERABLE UNTIL THE NEXT ONE WITHOUT ANSWERS. ugh. but I love it hehehe.
also, it’s official y’all. Theos is my favorite Darkhaven for now. Ruen baby you’re so god damn close, but I need you to loosen tf UP. Your brothers are grown men, let them get their rocks off babes and join innnnnn 🙂↕️ Kalix gets bonus points for the pierced d*ck & snake bondage fantasies but idk Theos’s golden eyes sound delish. truthfully, I’d be down to dedicate my body to their pleasure. that sharing they hinted at? yeah I volunteer. do with me what you will boys lmfao.
this book honestly started off so unhinged and hot, and I’m here for every god damn SECOND OF IT. Kalix and his fluids? I mean come the freak ONNNNN. we hadn’t even hit the 15% mark and Lucinda had me simultaneously questioning myself and begging for more. our little thief and liar, Kiera holds her own with these three, and I’m so in awe of her. I cannot wait until she’s finally able to unleash herself on the world. the moment that brimstone is taken out of her skin, the moment her contract is broken, I’m fully expecting for her to bring the gods and their twisted society tumbling to the ground, hopefully with the Darkhaven’s at her back !!! call it wishful thinking if you’d like. I prefer to think of it has manifestation. Kiera’s resilience and resolve have been tested over and over, and she continues to rise above. she deserves to cause a little mayhem in this next installment.
Thank you to Literally Yours and Lucinda Dark for providing an ARC of this book for me to give an honest review.
The fact that I've just read books 1 and 2 of the Mortal Gods series in less than 24 hours would suggest that I find them very easy to read!
A Reign of Storm and Madness picks up immediately after the events of A Sword of Shadow and Deceit. This dark fantasy, why choose romance series continues to be plot heavy and I love that about it. Sometimes RH series are very light on plot but this series is ALL about the plot, and for me it has the perfect balance of fantasy and romance. I think if you were reading this expecting complete smut, you might be disappointed but if you're after more plot with a bit of spice, this might be the series for you! This second book only has a few spicy scenes, and it's still taking its time to develop all the individual relationships at a realistic pace, and to focus on the characters. I'd recommend checking the TWs on this one though, as it is a little darker than the first.
This is a great sequel and the cliffhanger in this one completely blindsided me, so I'm going straight into Book 3 right now to see what happens!
Note: The first three books of the Mortal Gods series are already released and available on Kindle Unlimited. The fourth book is due for release (and available on KU) on 29th November 2024.
✨𝑨𝑹𝑪 𝑹𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘✨ 📖: A Reign of Storm and Madness (Mortal Gods #2)
We are reunited with our main characters following the shocking events from the first book. Kiera’s secrets threaten her mission, freedom, and her very life. Will she survive the betrayal and the storm and madness?
Tropes/themes: 👀Multi pov - 🖤Dark Fantasy Romance 🗡️Assassin FMC ☠️Anti-Hero 🚫Forbidden Existence ❤️️Enemies-to-Lovers 🔥Why Choose 🌶️: moderate to high
Like the first book, I devoured this one! In this installment, we get deeper character insight, more history of the gods, magic, and dynamic relationships with each of the MMCs.
Kiera remains incredibly fierce and resilient. I am rooting hard for her to not only survive, but to finally unleash all that feminine rage. Ruen is full of regret and self-loathing. Kalix is intrigued, unhinged, and possessive. Theos is jealous and wanting. Their darkness calls to each other and I am dying to see these complex entanglements continue to mature!
In A Reign of Storm and Madness, Lucinda weaves a tale full of dangerous secrets, tantalizing tension and 🌶️, and whispers of unspoken desires. Lucina Dark delivers a binge worthy and electrifying sequel. I am obsessed with this dark and gritty world and even darker characters. Once again, the ending had me screaming for the next book!
Huge thanks to the author and Literally Yours PR for the ARC opportunity. This is my honest and voluntary review
I love this series!! Apologies, this review is basically a lot of gushing and exclamation marks haha.
This picks up right after the events of book 1 (which must be read first).
I love the relationship between the main characters, Keira is so so strong for what she goes through. And the guys have some invisible pull towards her.
I actually think Kalix may be my fav Darkhaven.. who doesn’t love a dangerous, morally grey, part-god.
I hate spiders. Like really dislike them. But they were kind of cute in this! Especially the scene with Aranea and Theos. Cuteee!!!
That ending!! Oh my gosh. What the heck!!! I did not see that coming at all! The betrayal! Cannot wait for the next book.
A huge thank you to Literally Yours PR and Lucinda Smoke for my copy.
I was foaming at the mouth waiting for this and I wasn’t the least bit disappointed 🤌🏻🤌🏻 Miss Lucy is back at it with Kiera and the Darkhaven brothers and it just kept getting better and better. The twisting and turning plot had me at the edge of my seat the whole time and I just couldn’t put it down. The tension and the smut and the obsession of the Darkhaven brothers is just *chef’s kiss* and Kiera being the embodiment of female rage is divine. The cliffhanger had me screaming what the FFFFFF and idk how I’m gonna be able to wait for the next book I’m almost mad I read this as an ARC bc now I have to wait longer 😭😭
. . . I received an ARC of this book, thank you to Literally Yours PR!
I’m not typically a why choose girlie but this series is definitely the exception. It’s just so good. I love that there really is a plot too it with the subplot of her romantic entanglements with the brothers. Also that her relationship with each is different— I feel most strongly for her and Ruen, but that has a lot to do with the depth of their history given the betrayal. I feel like the story developed more with this one and I loved that she was just this vengeful FMC for like half the book because of what happened at the end of the last one. With the turn this one took, I’m intrigued to see what happens next as there are more people in the know about what she is.
Also… poor baby Niall :(
Thank you Literally Yours PR for access to the sequel of this series! I’m really enjoying it.
A Reign of Shadow and Madness picks up where book 1 finishes. I enjoyed book 1, and I just devoured book 2. The cliffhanger 🤯 at least I got book 3 downloaded and ready to read.
I love as we explore each character more, and I've definitely got a soft spot for Nirall and Maeryn!
The world building is great, and I enjoy the magic system or should I say the Divinity system. There's so many unanswered questions and I can't wait to learn who Kiera's mother really is, what's the contract and what's in general going on.
The why choose element is great, and each guy is different which makes for great tension.
A Reign of Storm and Madness. Book #2 Mortal Gods series by Lucinda Dark, Lucy Smoke.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️
A beautifully dark and elegant piece of romantacy.
This is the second instalment in the Mortal Gods series. We carry on from where we left off in the first book. The unique narrative and brilliant world building is a work of art that draws you into this amazing and well crafted storyline.
The characters and their development is brilliantly executed and you cannot help but love them all…
I absolutely adore these characters and their chemistry with each other as they journey through this series. Fantastic banter and a wonderful balanced portrayal of this story throughout this narrative. Love these characters. Well crafted and written with deeply intricate charms and personalise.
The building plot line leaves you wanting the next instalment as you reach the ending cliffhanger.
Loved it! I loved getting a bit more insight into the brothers and also Kiera's background. The ending to this one, I think, was better than the last one! I'm looking forward to book 3!
~A Reign of Storm and Madness~Mortal Gods Book 2~Lucinda Dark~
~"History is not written by the farmers or the peasants. History is written by kings and gods, by conquerors and rulers. The true history lies somewhere in between what is written and what is not.”~
🖤Lucinda with another dang CLIFFHANGER!! I'm not a big dark romantasy reader as I'm still new to that genre, but so far, I am loving this series and all of the twists and turns involved. I love Kiera the FMC she takes crap from no one. She is super strong-willed, sarcastic, and an absolute ride or d*e friend. The MMC's are all Morally black but have shown that there isn't anything they will not do for her. Also, I have never been a 🕷 fan, but now I'm in love with a 🕷🤣. Aranea can do no wrong, and I hope I see more of her in book 3🖤
I really enjoyed the first book in this series, but book two just kinda fell flat. I feel like hardly anything happened until the last 70%. I skimmed over half and don't feel like I missed anything at all. I'm holding out hope that the next book will be better though! I still really like the characters, and I hope the storyline progresses faster in book three.
“Don’t deceive us, Kiera. You won’t like us when we’ve decided to keep something as ours and it tries to run away.” Theos
"Evil is not the tyranny of the Gods. It is not even the cruelty of life. Evil is the act of apathy, and madness is begging for difference only when you need it."
💫Review💫
I have been utterly obsessed with this series since about three pages into book one, so I was beyond excited when I was selected as an ARC reader for this one because the wait was killing me. Lucinda continues to amaze in this next instalment, instantly drawing me in from page one and keeping me in an enthralled chokehold until the very last page. The cliffhanger....not ok...I have resumed the impatient pacing while my mind churns through all the possibilities of what is coming next. To say I was shocked is an understatement, I genuinely did not see it coming. I thought it was someone else. Can't say more without spoilers. Suffice to say, you must read this book!!!
I love the insights we got into the boys in this book, the snippet of Kalixs past that displays the emotional trauma he would have suffered as a child that led him to be who he is now. I also loved the fact that we got more of Ruen in this book and a further glimpse into the boys and their bond. Keira, as always, is a feisty badass who you just can't help but respect. She still gives me strong Celeana sardothian vibes, and I love it!! I really enjoyed the developing bond between Keira and the guys and how her guard is coming down around them even though she is still terrified of letting her walls down.
Lucinda manages to write in such a way thay draws you into the story, makes you live it, breathe it, feel what the characters are feeling. The world building and character development throughout this series has been next level. I cannot wait to read the next book and I strongly urge those of you who haven't read this series yet to start ASAP. Definitely still sitting strong in my top reads for this year.
Without giving too much away, Book 2 picks right back up after the betrayal at the end of A Sword of Shadow and Deceit. Kiera is made an example and all eyes are suddenly on her when she has been trying to blend in this whole time. Her mission continues to be threatened as she must continue playing her part as Terra to the Darkhaven brothers.
But oh do things heat up in more ways than one in this book. We get more POVs from Kalix, Theos and Ruen and boy do I love just being inside Kalix’s head. Ruen is full of guilt, Theos wants to protect her and Kalix wants to play and figure Kiera out. All while her feelings for the brothers are becoming harder to deny and her secret is on the verge of exposure.
“Theos might have had you first…but, I intend to keep you, little thief. So long as you amuse me, your body is mine.”
Will Kiera succumb to her feelings? Will she be able to keep her identity a secret?
Read A Reign of Storm and Madness to find out what happens.
