Is it wrong to have the hots for a possible bad guy? Maybe. Do I care? Nope.
The Sorrow of Shadows is a unique reimagining (not retelling!) of Hamlet and is like nothing else on the market today. With an interesting magic system to learn, warring kingdoms, and a murder mystery to solve, the entire storyline of this Dark Romantasy makes for a fascinating read. (check your trigger warnings)
And yes, I said Dark Romantasy with a capital D. The author doesn't shy away from the tough stuff or the spice, so if you like Game of Thrones mixed with some swoon-worthy love stories, then this book is for you. (GOT minus the dragons, but maybe we'll get some later. please?)
Speaking of love stories, we have several happening, but the main one is between Breyla and Aurelius. The pair have a taboo relationship that is so forbidden it'll make you gasp, but in such a good way. (no, they are not related. eww, stop)
And while I love Breyla and Aurelius, the "side" characters were also fantastically developed. I absolutely adore Ophelia & Elijah, and I need more of Ayden in my life. So. Much. More. Ayden. Is he a good guy? Is he a bad guy? Do I even care because the man is hot and has such a saucy attitude I can't help but love him? (It's me. Hi. I'm the problem)
If you can't tell, I had fun with this book. Morgana Black has crafted compelling characters and fused them with a mysterious storyline that will keep readers guessing until the end. (no, I didn't figure out the mystery before the characters, and I'm still a little upset with myself over it)
The nods to Hamlet are there, but the story is fresh and new and not at all what you're expecting. I can't wait for book two!!

I was given an arc for an honest review. This had all the stuff I usually go for but unfortunately it just didn't stick the landing. There were so many things that didn't get explained. And I was left quite confused.

Oh this was good. So much I enjoyed about this. The murder mysteries, the tension, the characters, the unique magical powers the characters welded, the spice....oh the spice was 🔥. There's actually quite a bit of spice, but equally enough plot. Honestly the perfect balance in my opinion.
Breyla and Aurelius were simply intoxicating.
What I loved the most was that Breyla, the fmc, is the shadow welder and such a bada** one at that. Not only a princess, but also the general. Seriously just avoid her bad side, you want her on your team.
The taboo relationship between her and Aurelius though just made things a bit more interesting....but no, don't worry they're not blood related.
I also loved that we got pov of the other characters.
I'm looking forward to seeing more of Elijah and Ophelia. Both of their characters were just so interesting. As well as Jade. There's so much loss in this first book, so heartbreaking for the characters and I even ended up tearing up at the end.
This story is pretty fast paced and no lagging moments which I enjoyed. I just kept needing to know what was happening next. Some truths were finally exposed at the end, but with that several new secrets and twists revealed that now has me needing book 2 immediately.

This is definitely one of the best dark fantasy reads I've read this year! Breyla is badass and I love her shadow gift.. and Aurelius?? His gift is intriguing!
The magic system and the world building was unique, I ate it up! The characters and the bonds had me hooked.. and that ending??? What?? I'm going to be stewing about that one until the next one comes out!

- I love seeing maps in fantasy books
- this is so cute " Did this male just boop me like I’m a cute kitten?"
- this made me laugh. "I did pull a knife on a ghost," a ghost isn't scared of anything LOL
- I devoured this book in one day as it was good and very addictive
- it had Forbidden romance and Enemies-to-Lovers which I absolutely adore !
- it had ghosts which made this book perfect for Halloween
- oh I can't forget the witty banter that I really enjoyed
- 🌶🌶🌶🌶 for th3 spice , just couldn't get enough
- I love the soul mate that came with twin Flames which was soo adorable!
- I love the murder mystery that was found in this book , it was everything I love in this book !
- I love how it had a strong FMC plus a touch of taboo aswell

Whaaaaat?! What did I just read? The ending? The what?!
Ok, this book started as “nothing special” but it still took my attention. I found myself just going and going until I realized I can’t put it down.
I assumed it was soooo obvious who is behind all the mistery, enjoying the ride, the characters, the spice and then… wow!
Characters mentioned- I think I loved ALL of them (except Seamus ofc), our fearless and strong FMC, sassy MMC, Elijah, Jade and our beautiful Ophelia (think Kaltain, but thankfully alive).
I really, but really recommend reading this book, but be aware ir does end on a MASSIVE cliffhanger.
Mrs Black, please be so kind and give us next book asap, tomorrow if possible.

I read this book in less than a day, I was hooked from the first page. I couldn't put it down.
The spice, the multiple POVS, the big twist at the end, it was all sooo good and if you're like fantasy you'll enjoy this book. I already look forward to the second one even though the first isn't released lol

Romantasy read you don’t want to miss, from the start the unique story line captures you. The characters development is great and seeing their different abilities. This book leaves you on a cliffhanger and I can’t wait to read part 2!!

WHAT THE ACTUAL EFF?! I am not okay with that ending!
I really enjoyed this book. I loved the murder mystery and investigation aspect. All the Gifts were unique to me and I enjoyed finding out what each character could do.
I absolutely adore Ophelia and Elijah and I can't wait to find out what happens next with them.
Okay but that ending though?! The way I gasped! I absolutely need more. I need to find out what the heck happens and how Breyla handles it.

I’m torn on this one. I really liked the overall plot and the intricate magic system, but there were some things about the characters and parts of the writing style that I didn’t jive with.

•The FMC, Breyla, is a strong, independent female and a general in the army. She cares deeply for her kingdom and duty, and while she’s not good at being vulnerable or showing feelings but we some character development in that department.
•The MMC, Aurelius, is supportive when it comes to Breyla, but doesn’t step in unless needed. I love MMCs who embrace the strength of their partners; who are their complimentary partner who stands by their side as an equal.
•The murder mystery aspect along with the court intrigue and politics and the magic system. It made for a nice melding of genres.
•The side characters. I like books where they are written in a way that makes me know them well enough to care for them almost as much, if not as much as, the main characters. There is also a development of another romance between two of them that gave the story another layer.
•The Romance: Aurelius is the adopted brother of her father, the deceased king. He is also newly engaged to her mother because she can’t remain Queen without being married. These two facts create a “taboo” relationship between Breyla and Aurelius. This all sorts itself out and doesn’t end up being nearly as taboo as you would initially think. It was different than my usual romance tropes but not so different that I got the ick.

•Breyla and Aurelius need to work on their communication skills, and find a middle ground somewhere between fxxking and arguing to make their feelings/relationship more impactful.

I LOVED the emotional roller coaster ride that was this book. It had me sweating! From the steamy banter and all the delicious smut you could ever ask for to the ever-growing murder mystery plot with tension so thick you could cut it with a knife.
This story kept me guessing every step of the way, never knowing what was around the next corner.
It was so much fun to get to know these characters and it was such a heart-pumping ride knowing that none of them are safe with the brutal way that Morgana Black writes.
Throw in a badass magical system and this story has it all. Wanna see what happens when blood powers and shadow powers collide in the bedroom? Read this book!
I have always been a nerd for stories with fully fleshed out magic systems that are deeply-interwoven into the heart of it all, and so this story really scratched that itch.
It also scratches a lot of other itches…going to all the steamy dark romance corners I love to find myself in. And the store does get DARK. So be forewarned.
I can easily say that I am eagerly awaiting the next installment in this series!

This Hamlet reimagining hooked me in right from the beginning and I would think about it even when I put it down.
I love that it maintained that shakespearian vibe but with modern and dark twists.
Breyla was a fantastic female main character who held her own and was incredibly sassy. You never knew what would come out of her mouth next and I absolutely loved that. While she was a baddie FMC, I didn’t always love the way she’d compare herself to other women, however.
My favourite part of this story, was her friendship with Elijah. He is the man she grew up with and who is most definitely her platonic soulmate. I wish we had gotten more of Elijah’s character because he was already so loveable.🥹
While the plot gripped me, I did need more development of secondary characters so that certain twists would have been more meaningful.
I also wanted more out of Breyla’s relationships with her mom and with Aurelius. With Aurelius, specifically, I loved them but i felt like we both did and didn’t know him at all so it surprised me that Breyla didn’t push to know more.
And the reactions to their forbidden romance?! I felt slightly underwhelmed😩 I wanted that aspect to be a bit angstier!
What was a plus with all of these characters though was the multi-pov storytelling 😍 I loved being able to see into the minds of more than just Breyla & Aurelius. Hopefully we’ll be getting Ayden POVs in book 2 👀
Overall, this was a great start to the series and after that cliffhanger (Morgana Black how could you😩) I absolutely can’t wait to read book 2!

The Sorrow of Shadows by Morgana Black is the first book in The Crimson and Shadows Series.
After the death of her father, the King, Breyla returns home from the war to his ghost and the news that her mother is engaged to her nemesis, Lord Aurelis. As her loved ones become targets, Breyla must work with Aurelius to uncover the foreces working againat them while fighting her attraction to the male she has spent years hating.
The Sorrow of Shadows is a reimaging of Hamlet and I had high expectations going into this. I was not disappointed! Told from multiple POV, the story captivated me from the very beginning. The world building is sublime and while fast-paced, it doesn't feel rushed with bits of the larger plot revealed in layers allowing for the story to build in tension and suspense.
All the characters are well written and developed and you find yourself caring for the side characters as much as the main ones. Each of them are multi dimensional with their own complexities and motivations that leave you questioning who you can trust.
Breyla is a bad ass. She refuses to show weakness but loves wholeheartedly. She is strong, intelligent, fierce, kind, compassionate and a little bratty. While she may be the princess, she considers herself first and foremost to be a General and while she cares for her Kingdom she is uninterested in royal formalities and would rather go to war than a ball.
Aurelius is cocky, dominating and possessive while being sweet and caring. He is the definition of morally grey with his words and actions leaving you wondering what is true intentions are. His relationship with Breyla is electrifying and the taboo nature of it makes it that much more intense.
I appreciated the extras that Morgana included that helped draw you into the story. Not only is there a playlist that has been specifically created for each chapter, there is a breakdown of the unique magic system and a world map included at the start of the book. If you have Tik Tok, make sure you find Morgana and listen to the death hymn song that is featured throughout the book. It is a hauntingly beautiful hymn thst make the scenes stay with you long after you have finished reading.

A Dark, Emotional Masterpiece – My New Obsession
The Sorrow of Shadows by Morgana Black completely captivated me from the very first page. The story revolves around General Breyla Rozaria, a hardened warrior dealing with both the external chaos of a kingdom in peril and the personal grief that threatens to consume her. What starts as a mission to avoid her past quickly turns into a larger conspiracy, pulling Breyla into a tangled web of betrayal, magic, and political intrigue.
The character development is stunning. Breyla is not just a warrior, but someone who’s carrying heavy emotional burdens, and that vulnerability makes her incredibly relatable. Her interactions with Lord Aurelius are a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers dynamic that’s masterfully written. They are forced to work together despite their deep-rooted animosity, and their relationship is full of tension, slow revelations, and moments of genuine vulnerability that took me on an emotional rollercoaster.

I loved this one so much and read it so fast. It’s a dark romantasy gender bent Hamlet retelling, with a unique magic system. It is mysterious with plenty of plot twists and an ending that I’m not sure I’ve forgiven @morgana for yet.
Shadow Mommy!!! Breylas snarky humor is probably one of my favorite things in this book. Completely my kind of girl. She’s strong, fierce and learning to embrace those pesky things called feelings. Loved her start to finish.
Blood Daddy Aurelius 🥵 Ohhhhhh did I love him right off the bat. We know how much I love a morally grey to black MMC. The tension between him and Breyla was just top tier. I’m serious too about his Blood powers. 🥵 Those spicy scenes are 🤌🏽 Just gonna quickly mention that he’s also set up to become Breyla’s step father sooo… there’s that too. 😏🤭
The witty banter in this book also was perfection.
As amazing as our MCs are I love, love, love the side characters. They are developed so well and are crucial to the plot. Elijah and Ophelia ❤️🔥 oof, I can’t wait to get more of them. Their story is one I can’t wait to continue. Ayden…. Mmmmmm did I know right away he was gonna be an issue and I was here for it. I NEED more of him. This is an interesting reimagining of Shakespeare's classic tragedy, Hamlet. Overall, I enjoyed the book. The magic system was clever and intriguing to discover and my favorite part. Even though I'm familiar with the story of Hamlet, the author added enough differences to make this retelling feel fresh and all its own.
What didn't work so great for me (caveat: this is entirely due to my preferences for what I find romantic) was the romance(s). There are two main romances, one worked less for me than the other.
The romances in this book came off as lust at first sight and pretty much stayed in the lust camp for the rest of the book. One of the romances is what I would call a "bully" romance, where the characters are mean and bully each other until they finally admit their attraction to each other (not my thing).
One of the guys is also very possessive (in a borderline, annoying bad way [for me]). This possessive character also had a repetitive (abusive) action he did to his love interest in almost every scene that was completly not sexy and started getting stale by the book's end.
That being said, each romance has cute, romantic moments, but those moments were often overshadowed by gratuitous sex scenes that probably took up at least 1/4 of the plot, probably slightly more than that.
The sex over plot style started to wane slightly near the end of the book, but the magical system, setting, political intrigue, and the other dark plot elements the author weaved inbetween the "romantic" bits had intrigued me enough to want to read more, and I'll read the sequel.
If you're looking for a dark, medieval tale with murder, ghosts, and characters with innate magical powers, this delivers, just be mindful that you'll also be reading a lot of descriptive sex and one of the romances has some abusive qualities (but the H is totally into it, so it's okay).

This book follows a badass FMC who is the general of the army/princess of this kingdom when suddenly her dad dies while she’s away at war and her mom announces her engagement to FMCs Uncle who was FMCs dads adopted brother who she and the dead ghost of her dad suspect had a hand in his murder. So the logical choice is to team up with this man to find out who is actually doing the killing in the castle who she has an undeniable tension with right? I mean what’s the worst that could happen with her soon to be stepfather uncle?
I adored reading this book, there was lots of romance and tension and touch her and die vibes from Aurelius, and witty banter between him and Breyla. The cast of characters in this book and multiple POVs that were followed helped build an immersive story that allowed for reveals and twist and devastating deaths to hit in the most impactful way. I also love a goofy golden retriever best friend so Elijah was my favorite by far! This book emotionally wrecked me several times watching Breyla and the rest of gang deal with death after death of people she was close to and her strength through it all is remarkable but when she finally breaks through the support of Aurelius, I think that impact I felt most of all.
The world building and magic system in this book had me feeling like I was right there with them with the way scenarios and scenery were so well articulated. I also really loved the found family among friends for not only Breyla but all of the characters found together in this book as they had to lean on each other. There were lots of crazy reveals, especially right at the end that had me on the edge of my seat waiting for reactions and how this will all turn out and after the ending of this book I need the next one like asap! Overall I really enjoyed this book and its characters and my rating is 5/5!
I adored reading this book, there was lots of romance and tension and touch her and die vibes from Aurelius, and witty banter between him and Breyla. The cast of characters in this book and multiple POVs that were followed helped build an immersive story that allowed for reveals and twist and devastating deaths to hit in the most impactful way. I also love a goofy golden retriever best friend so Elijah was my favorite by far! This book emotionally wrecked me several times watching Breyla and the rest of gang deal with death after death of people she was close to and her strength through it all is remarkable but when she finally breaks through the support of Aurelius, I think that impact I felt most of all.
The world building and magic system in this book had me feeling like I was right there with them with the way scenarios and scenery were so well articulated. I also really loved the found family among friends for not only Breyla but all of the characters found together in this book as they had to lean on each other. This book made me feel a lot of things. A lot of conflicting things. I may or may not have messaged Morgana to express my outrage on that twisted cliffhanger ending.
I *devoured* this book. The characters, all of them so so flawed, were incredibly well-written. This reimagining of Hamlet is such a dark and forbidden fantasy, filled with twists, turns, and subtle foreshadowing. The unique magic system was easy to follow, and a short explanation of each type of Gift is at the beginning of the book. Also, check the trigger warnings, please!
Breyla, our FMC, could easily have been a simpering female, but she wasn’t. Nor was she a Mary Sue badass warrior. Though badass warrior general she is, her flaws kept her from being overpowered and unrelatable. The inner wars she had with herself were intriguing to follow.
Lord Aurelius…. How do I describe this character without giving away the plot? Well, he’s a spicy one. In all the best ways. And his magical Gifts are *chef’s kiss*.
I loved the changing POVs within the book, giving us glimpses into some of the other characters, and I thoroughly enjoyed the scenes with Elijah and Ophelia. Ayden drove me bonkers – I still don’t know how I feel about him!
The snarky banter between so many of the characters, the high levels of spice and sexy scenes, and the seemingly secondary plot points all weave together in this not-to-be-missed story.

Lady Ophelia has been overlooked by her father for far too long. Now is her chance to make an impact. She must befriend princess Breyla and relay information back to her father. But what Ophelia discovers with her new found family just might alter her relationship with him.
When secrets are discovered both women will have to face their fears and determine who they want to become and who they want to fight for.
This story had the perfect balance of spice with excellent world-building. The characters, with all their flaws, felt real and relatable, which made me feel a connection with them. However, one thing that stuck with me was the relationship between Breyla and her UNCLE… Without revealing too much, there was a brief explanation that made it slightly understandable, but I still found it a bit hard to relate to. This was a fantastic book and I cannot wait for the next one!

Morgana Black knows how to write her dark romantasy! This debut novel holds nothing back and leaves you wanting so much more when it ends. If book one is any indicator of what readers are in store for, all I can say is hold on tight! Full of delicious spice, reimagined and gender bent Hamlet vibes, a unique magic system, this book is like nothing I have read before. Complex characters, a touch of taboo (no major ick factor), and twists you are better off just not trying to figure out, this book was a great read.
Although there are multiple romances throughout the book, the focus lies on Breyla and Aurelius. This is where the taboo comes in. I loved how we had a shadow mommy is this book. I mean, I love me some shadow daddy, but this FMC was strong, fierce, and powerful. Reading these two give into their emotions had me kicking and screaming, in the best way.
Morgana also writes amazing side characters. Side characters who I hope to see more of as the series continues. They were easy to love, dislike, and even both at times. She gives multiple POVs from a number of characters. It was so easy to get swept up into the world Morgana created between the covers of this book. Another book that I highly recommend and just want to say BUY, DOWNLOAD, and READ NOW!

If you’re looking for a book with an outstanding plot, incredible characters, mystery/fantasy/romance, betrayals, twists, turns, and spice….I highly recommend reading The Sorrow of Shadows by Morgana Black. As someone who has never read a Morgana Black book before this one, I can confidently say that I will be reading more of her backlog and upcoming releases!!
Breyla and Aurelius are the couple that always leaves you wanting more. They are so perfect for each other, have incredible banter, and have such intense chemistry (and the fact that their relationship is forbidden, makes this story even better). Breyla is such a strong character. She never lets others see her weaknesses and often holds in her emotions. However, she is super resilient, intelligent, and an extremely good general. Aurelius is morally grey-ish, extremely protective of Breyla, and would literally do anything for her. I loved them as a couple because they met each other match for match.
The plot was so entertaining. There were so many incredible elements that made the story shine. The side characters were so good (I need more of Elijah and Ophelia immediately). The twists, turns, and betrayals were very well-written and the story overall was engaging.

Be warned the tears will be falling so grab your tissues and prepare yourself 🤧 PREPARE TO BE SICK OF ME because I will not stop talking about this until the next book is out!!!

If you love dark romantasy with a badass princess with a flirtatious cinnamon roll BFF and a morally grey love interest then this may be the book for you.
I love that Morgana put a list of all the magics in her book so that way you have a reference if you tend to get confused during the world building aspect of a story && there is a MAP! (Yes, i am one of those individuals who love having a map to reference when locations are being discussed)
Breyla is the badass Heroine of our story, she is the princess Rimor but also happens to be the General of their mighty army. Her BFF Elijah is there to have her back no matter what and he definitely brings some light heartedness to the story. Aurelius is a dark and delicious curve ball Breyla never saw coming, she has to try and work alongside him to find out what is happening in her kingdom before things get worse. The spice between the main characters is so yummy 💦 especially when Aurelius uses his “special” gift. If you love shadow daddies thinks of Breyla as your new favorite shadow mommy! 😜 OMG the ending tho??? Talk about a cliff hanger, i seriously can not wait to find out what happens in book 2 because i just can’t with the knowledge bomb that was dropped.

This book is an excellent debut from this dark fantasy author!

I really enjoyed this story and the twist ending was spectacular! Morgana blends political intrigue, war and a murder mystery into her unique fantasy world and I'm hooked! Fans of Celaena from SJM's Throne of Glass series will love Breyla - this FMC is a firecracker from the get-go and personally, I love a FMC who is self-confident and unapologetic about who she is. And did I mention Lord Aurelius? Swoon worthy from the very first page!
