I’m beginning to think he needs me as much as I need him…
Look, there are plenty of things I just learned about the gorgeous, seven-foot-tall perfect specimen of male living next door to me:
1) Karnak can scent everything about me, including those times I thought I was alone in my hot tub and I decided to experiment with different water jet settings. 2) He’s really good at finding lost kitties (not a euphemism). 3) In the four years I’ve lived next door to him, the orc has known—beyond a shadow of a doubt—that I’m his fated Mate. And apparently it’s killing him to stay away.
But our beach town of Eastshore is dying, and I’m the one tasked with saving it. No pressure, right? And the fourth thing I’ve just learned about Karnak is that despite being the world’s largest, greenest recluse, he’s also the only one who can help me save our cozy, tightknit community.
Unfortunately, he has this silly idea he deserves to be alone. If I can’t convince him this town is perfect for him, then how can I prove I’m perfect for him, too?
Tropes: Fated Mates, boy next door, size difference, virgin hero, teammates, small town (of course!)
Veronika Kane is the monster-loving alter-ego of USA Today Bestselling Author Caroline Lee. One of Caroline's favorite genres to read is SciFi Romance, which led her to monster romance. When she discovered it was possible to set big, buff, delicious monsters in contemporary cozy small towns, she was sold. And that's how she ended up with a new pen name and a new series.
Welcome to the town of Eastshore Isle, the only beach town on the east coast experiencing negative population growth. You know who's going to help save the town? That's right; super-sexy, laugh-out-loud orcs.
My ORC Next Door by Veronika Lane Eastshore Isle series #1. Paranormal monster romance. Fated mates. Alternating POV. Jess bought her home on Eastshore Isle four years ago and loves her community. She is on the committee to help improve the financial stability of the island because businesses are closing. After getting to know her neighbor, Jess believes bringing more Orcs to Eastshore is the solution. Karnak has lived on Eastshore Isle for ten years. He keeps to himself and orders groceries from out-of-town. When Jess moved in next door, he knew she was his Mate. But he learned during captivity that humans don’t want anything to with Orcs. Especially not romantically. He can’t help being around Jess when she’s outside though, especially when she’s in her hot tub. Her smell is intoxicating. Jess and Karnak are silently lusting after each other. Maybe they should do something about that.
A gentle green giant, silently helping his neighbors with tasks. Sure, he can be, and is, an actual “monster” but he can also be a good neighbor. And wow, he steps up to help Jess with the loss of her Muffin. Kitten. Really. 🤣. So amusing, that both Jess and Karnak have a lot of arguments with themselves. And lusty thoughts. It’s actually a slow burn once they acknowledge they want more but they eventually get steamy and sexy hot. Humor, sexy times and a love they have to work at to believe. A fantastic start of a romance series and I can’t wait to read more.
This had so much potential, and even though I did really enjoy it, it wasn't what I was hoping for.
First of all, I thought the whole tusk thing was going to give me the ick. However... they gave me a similar vibe to when a vampire or fae has fangs (which we all know is haaawt), so I ended up not minding them HAHA.
This definitely gives cutesy, cozy vibes. The book takes place on a small, secluded island that is losing population. The FMC is trying to save the town and comes up with the idea to make the island a safe space for non-humans (like her hot orc neighbor, Karnak) in order to raise the population. She enlists the help of said sexy orc neighbor to help her, and they become closer and closer.
I had a really fun time with the book, but I wish we found out more about both the MCs’ backgrounds, and I felt like things would be mentioned but not described in any detail, which just made me more curious. For example, Karnak mentions that he was basically imprisoned and put through a bunch of medical tests by the government. And that was it. Just mentioned in passing.
Minor spoiler because I need to vent about a specific scene at the end of the book:
Safety/Tropes: - no cheating/sharing - no third-act breakup - virgin orc MMC - small town
preread Listen...I don't know how I feel about those tusks, but I'm trying to stay open minded 😂
Note: Some of my goodreads shelves can be spoilers

Basic plot: Jess is determined to save Eastshore Isle and works together with Karnak to make it happen
Give this a try if you want: - fantasy contemporary-ish romance – this is a contemporary world with Orcs - small town romance – Eastshore Isle setting - mutual pining - neighbors! - fated mates - size difference - heroine works on the Eastshore Town Council (Community Development Coordinator) - virgin hero - higher steam – 3-4 scenes (I didn’t count one as ‘full’ because it was on the short side so might feel hotter to you.)
Ages: - didn’t see them mentioned
First line: Okay, you know when you’re watching a movie and the main character is about to do something really embarassing, so maybe you put your hand over your eyes – as if it’ll help – but you still kinda peek through your fingers?
My thoughts: This book is soooo freaking adorable and fun and everything I want right now!
Karnak and Jess live next door to each other but haven’t had much interaction but the longing – THE LONGING. Sigh. So swoony. I adore that unrequited adoration just eating them up inside. Peeking at each other through windows. Masturbating in hot tubs while thinking of the other showering…see? So swoony
The humor is fun. Muffin the cat is a lovely side character and lead in for plenty of euphemisms. I love the small town and all the side characters. Definitely looking forward to more from this series!

Full break down on what my ratings above mean here: Overall: How I felt about it everything considered! Readability: How ‘readable’ was the book? Did I fly through it? Did I have to tell myself to pick it back up repeatedly? Were any passages confusing? (I will probably score like (1) is literally unreadable due to formatting/typing errors, etc (2) There were lots of errors that made it difficult to read OR It was extremely confusing and I had to reread passages to make sense of it OR I disliked it so much I had to bribe myself to keep reading (3) I didn’t really want to keep reading and would have preferred to abandon the read and start something else OR some minor continuity issues/confusion (4) I liked it fine, maybe a minor error or 2. I was happy to pick it up when I had time. (5) I never wanted to put this down. I thought about it when I wasn’t reading it. I hid in the bathroom from my kids to read. I threw inappropriate food at my children for dinner so I could read instead.) Feels: Totally subjective to each person but did the book give me any tingles? Any butterflies? Did it rip my heart out (in a good way?) Emotional depth: How well do I feel I know the characters at the end? How much did I feel their emotions throughout the story? Sexual tension: Again, subjective, but how strong was the wanting and longing to me between the characters? A book might have strong sexual tension without a single touch. Romance: Was there romance? Did romantic things happen? This can be actions/words/thoughts of the characters and again is subjective. Sensuality: This is how the intimate scenes are written. Kisses and sexual scenes – how sensual were they? Were they on the mechanical side? Was there emotional pull tied in? Were the details explicit or flowery? These are subjective but generally (1) too short to get a good judgement (2) not all what I'm looking for - very vague or flowery prose (3) either not explicit enough or not enough emotional pull (too mechanical/physically descriptive without the emotions) (4) what I love in a scene (5) absolute perfection - perfect balance of emotional longing and explicit descriptions Sex Scene Length: How long the bedroom scenes are (generally (1) is 1-3 sentences (2) is a few paragraphs to a page-ish (3) is about average, a few pages (4) more well developed scenes, quite a few pages with descriptions (4) the majority of the book takes place in the bedroom. This is always hard to tell for me on audio! Steam Scale: Generally, each flame is a scene. If scenes are super close together I sometimes combine them. If a scene is super short or so vague I don’t know what’s happening, I don’t count it. There’s some levels of grey but generally the number of flames is how many sex scenes there are (I max out at 5 so I’ll put a + after if there’s more than that)
Oh goodness, I couldn’t wait to return to Eastshore Isle for Karnak’s and Jess’s story!
Let’s start with how utterly adorable the cover is! The cutesy cartoon art is carried over from the novella that kicked off this series, My Orc Bodyguard, and totally encapsulates just how quirky and cute the town and residents are!
Speaking of the town and its residents, I continue to love the small-town vibes with the bustling Main Street and little shoppes (as Meli would spell it 😊), the community events, and the overall comradery. I definitely felt like we had a larger insight into the isle’s residents in this book and I absolutely adored it. There are so many people that I want to continue to get to know as the series progresses, and I get the feeling Kane will deliver!
With this being the second book based in Eastshore Isle, we got to see more of the efforts put forward towards saving the community from negative population growth and the evil hands of Geoffrey A. Harrison. I also appreciated how the author brought up the issues surrounding speciesism and the doubts that crippled Karnak throughout the story. I love these continued themes in the series and can’t wait to see what happens as we explore more orcs coming to the isle. Sidenote: I’m totally getting a “single dad” romance vibe from Sakkara and I can’t wait to find out who his person is going to be!
I would be remiss to mention both the spice and the humor laden in this series. Our MCs are hilarious, especially with their inner monologues! I laughed a lot while reading this and feel that will continue as the series continues. Along with the laughs, there were so many sexy moments running throughout the story and we got a touch of the “good girl” from Karnak that makes my knees jelly! It was just the perfect amount of spice for such a cute series. I can’t wait to see what Cairo brings to the bedroom!
Last, but not least, the sneak peek into Meli’s and Cairo’s book, My Orc (Fake) Boyfriend, has me THIRSTING for their story! This is going to be a delicious little grumpy x sunshine, fake dating story and I know I’m going to eat it up like a tasty little muffin! I seriously CANNOT wait!!!
4.5 stars!
Thank you to Veronika Kane for the opportunity to read a copy of this story. The thoughts and opinions expressed above are honest and my own.
That's it! I'm moving to Eastshore! Not only does the town sound freaking adorable, the townsfolk are what you picture in a hallmark movie... well, for the most part. Throw in Karnak and his clan mates and you've got it all! Jess is smart, funny, and I would totally be friends with her. I neeeeed more of this series in my life!
This is the start of a fun series. Karnak is one of the Orcs who moved to Eastshore. Although he has lived on the island for years, he has never joined the community. Jess is his next door neighbor who also happens to be his mate.
This was a fun read. I enjoyed watching Jess and Karnak's relationship grow. There is some spice in the book.
I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
So I don't understand how this has got so many good reviews. This was just such a cringy book. The euphemisms, for the word vagina, constantly all the way through it was so cringy. I felt like I had to read the book with my eyes covered like you would a bad film. The plot was good, but there wasn't enough pages to execute it. So many characters were introduced and not explained. It was like someone had word vomited into the book and smushed it all around. None of it made sense, it was really embarrassing. Constantly using my muffin when describing a cat and actual muffins, is not the way to go. The author must have been laughing while she was writing this book, I'm laughing now doing this review, I just, I don't understand how this book is even out there. When Karnak was getting shouted at and mean things said about him, Jess did not stick up for him once she just stood there and let it happen. She'd literally talked to this person twice, this Karnak, and she was in love with him, yet she wouldn't stick up for him. The characters just had no depth, The book was so rushed. It didn't really cover what was happening in the town and the job that she had to do, because it was just so rushed talking about muffins and p******. I don't know what to do with this book now. I don't want to add it to a charity book stall or charity shop it because I don't want other people to look at the book and see the cover I think, oh that looks good and then have to suffer and endure through the 174 pages of actual rubbish...
“My Orc Next Door” is a fluffy monster romance between a human and an orc. It’s got cozy vibes and lots of spice. Since the MMC is an orc, he’s got special equipment and definitely knows how to use it.
Jess (FMC) is a city coordinator and is trying to breathe life back into the small island town to save it from being commercialized and overrun with tourists. Karnak (MMC) is her orc neighbor, who knew that Jess was his mate when she moved in next to him 4 years ago. He’s been keeping his distance because who would want to be tethered to a monster? At least that’s what he’s been told by other humans. The whole story is about how these two come together and ultimately work towards saving their home from tourists. Jess gets the love of her life and Karnak realizes that he is welcome in the place that he has decided to call home.
This was an easy read, and quick too at only around 200 pages. I loved their story and the underlying message about wanting to belong somewhere. The spice was pretty good and made it even more worth the read. I will definitely be reading more of this series and how the future of the island changes with the addition of other magical beings. I would recommend this one!
Eastshore Isle Series #1 This is the start of a very fun series. Paranormal monster romance What's not to love about an Orc. This book had me laughing out loud (the humor was great) Can't wait to read the rest of the series.
This is one of the Few Monster Romances that I have read so far and I am hooked. This book is funny and smutty at the same time. I really enjoyed reading it.
This is a short, funny, easy to read romantic fantasy. What happens when your next door neighbor is a green, 7 foot tall, very handsome Orc? There are hilarious inventions, like Orcs having evolved so women climax immediately during intimacy. There are also some serious plot lines related to bigotry towards anyone different. Very sweet. Perfect for Halloween.
I have been on an Orc kick lately and Veronika Kane is to blame.
In My Orc Next Door, we meet Jess who is trying to revitalize the small town of Eastshore Isle and Karnak, her recluse orc next door neighbor. Jess and Karnak have lived next door to each other for 4 years but have never spoken despite him knowing that she is his fated mate. This novel follows them as they finally begin speaking and falling for each other.
It was fun to read them trying to figure each other out. Karnak has a lot of beliefs about how humans operate, and he some trauma from when he first came to our world that keep him from initiating things with Jess. Well Jess was always aware that Karnak is an orc, it's clear that she had never thought much about how exactly that made him different. Overall, I went into it expecting a fun and kind of silly romance and that is exactly what it delivered. I like how this one set up for more orcs to come to Eastshore Isle - I can't think of a better way to populate a dying beach town than with hot green men with tusks?
My least favorite thing about this book was the way that Jess would break the fourth wall and address the audience. I don't enjoy this in any novel as it pulls me out of story.
"My Orc Next Door" is book one in "Eastshore Isle," the newest series by Veronika Kane. I have never read a book about an orc before, and I can honestly say I absolutely loved it. The humor in this book had me literally laughing out loud. I loved Jess and Karnak's story so much. If you want a very well written book with great descriptions and wonderful characters, then this is the book for you. I liked it so much that I went right on to reading the second book in the series.
It feels like there is a book before this one, that I should have read to explain this world. I know there is a prequel (My Orc Bodyguard), But if you're going to start a new series, it should be better explained Why things are the way they are if you are going to make that a major plot point. They do kind of go over what happens about a third or halfway through the book...but it's a little basic, and is more like a refresher that glosses over a lot. It still makes you feel like you're missing something which is probably my only major gripe. Otherwise, it's a fun, short break of a book.
Cute, sweet, and a little short. But my main complaint is that in the book, the overly obvious villain commits several crimes, literally gets the police involved, and… nothing happens to him? He just gets to go on his merry way for some reason.
Why? Because he’s a poorly written plot device. But personally, I find it distasteful that the author shows him literally sexually harassing the FMC and when pressed about it, we get a vague there is no HR in a small town, and he knows powerful people. Same deal with stalking and drunken physical assault. The police, FMC, and MMC all just let him walk away to do it again and ostensibly to other people. From a literary standpoint, it would be just as satisfying for him to go to jail!
I know you shouldn’t take life advice from a romance novel that includes orcs.. but really is it too much to ask that the villain get PROPER comeuppance?
I was not sure I would like a romance with a green monster as the romantic lead. I was pleasantly surprised. Despite being a large green orc Karnak is just like any other independently wealthy beach bum. Jess and Karnac have lived next door to each other for four years. Jess definitely finds Karnac attractive. Karnac knows that Jess is his fated mate, but he isn’t sure she could ever love a monster. When the two finally get together the chemistry is scorching. I recommend this book for anyone who likes low angst, high heat rom coms.
Jess decided to buy the house next to the quiet, semi-recluse, 7-ft tall orc named Karnak. Over the years, they have gotten to know each other a little. What she doesn't know is that for those 4 years Karnak has been fighting the urge to claim his mate, her. Karnak has convinced himself that she would only treat him as a monster. So when Jess asks for his help pitching an idea to save the town, he is reluctant but agrees. Can Jess convince him that their little town is a worthy location for Other beings to settle down?
The answer is probably obvious because this is a romance novel and things generally work out well in romance novels, but there is a journey to get there. A journey where Jess takes Karnak out to show him that Eastshore is a welcoming place, where people don't care that he is giant and green because he's genuinely a nice person. Why wouldn't they want Others to come and populate their dying little beachside town?
Even as she is convincing him, he still has his doubts. It's not often you read a book where it's a man, or as this author likes to call him, "male", that is having all these doubts about why his love interest has taken a shine to him. It's pretty blatant too. He spends a lot of time wondering if Jess only likes him because he's a monster, while missing all the signs that she's into him as a person as well. So much so that Jess finally calls him on it and then handles his confession in what can be called possibly the worst possible way, laughing hysterically at him.
What do I mean by that? Well, if the roles were reverse and it was a man laughing hysterically at a woman for thinking that he's only with her because she looks a certain way...well I don't think the reader would take it as well. But because he's a man we're supposed to be okay with Jess laughing uncontrollably at a major insecurity he has trusted her with? Hmmm. I am going to be honest, I grimaced when she had that reaction. It's not cute or anything else. Thankfully Karnak had a better reaction to it than I imagine most people would in that situation.
I also didn't find the humor in the muffin, muffin, muffin jokes. the cat named Muffin, the actual baked muffins and how they were jokingly using muffin as a euphemism as well. Same thing with pu**y. Why was this written in?
And the last thing I didn't like. I didn't like that fact that Jess never once stood up for Karnak. She mostly left him out to dry and just watched. She even admits to briefly believing what the certified a**hole was saying about him. It took the old lady next door neighbor coming to his rescue to sooth her fears, which is stupid. You're telling me you've lived next door to him for 4+ years and you're basically dating the guy, but you're not willing to step up to bat for him when he's faced with a manipulative a-hole that tried to blackmail you into dating him. Someone who flew off the handle, showed up at your door to threaten you??? Gross. thank god you are his fated mate cause otherwise he might have dropped you like a hot potato girl.
Gleeful Goblin Review: This book was absolutely darling and the interaction that the MC's have over #MissingMuffins and what an inside pet is tickled me pink. “You think she’s out there?” His question took me by surprise, but since he was staring out at the thicket behind our houses, my brain took a leap of conjecture. “Yes? I mean, I hope so.” He turned just far enough to quirk one black brow in my direction. “I mean,” I tried to explain, flustered all over again at being the focus of that dark gaze, “that it would be better than the marsh, right?” He grunted, and I wasn’t sure if that was an agreement. “Racoons live in the marsh and the brambles.” My chest grew tight again in sorrow. “Right,” I rasped. “She’s probably dead—” Karnak had been turning toward me as he spoke, and whatever he saw in my face caused him to bite off his words. “I-I know,” I choked, hating the fact that he was probably right. He was studying me, eyes curious. “Why does this animal’s death matter to you? You eat animals. I’ve seen your grocery order. I’ve smelled the tuna you’ve left around your porch.” He’d smelled those? “Sorry,” I whispered, wrapping my arms around my middle and fixing my gaze on the distant blob I hoped was Pickles, and not a pile of black laundry thrown over the chair in my living room. “I hadn’t realized it was bothering you.” “It’s not.” I'm sorry, he’d paid attention to my grocery order? “Muffin and Pickles…they’re my friends. Pets. You know?” I risked a glance at him. “Have you ever had a pet?” He was staring at me, his expression unreadable. My pulse sped, flickering at my collarbone. Finally, he shook his head. “I guess I haven’t.” Before he’d joined our world…he’s probably eaten animals the size and shape of housecats. I took a deep breath. “I guess…they’re like my family. My friends.” “You have other friends.” Was he trying to help, or being deliberately obtuse? “Yeah, and I’d be sad if one of them died, too.” His lips twitched again, more obvious because of the tusks. “Fair.” Was that supposed to be an apology?"
This is a dirty, fun, flirty story that has cozy vibes and grown up themes that will keep you smiling all the way to the end. 5/5 Stars
I’ve discovered a delightful new combination I enjoy in a book: orcs, small towns, and heartwarming stories. "My Orc Next Door" by Veronika Kane was a delightful surprise that I didn't know I would enjoy so much. Imagine a snug, comforting blanket on a chilly evening—that's what this book feels like.
From the author’s note, I learned that Eastshore Isle, the small town setting, was inspired by Edisto Island. After looking up images of Edisto Island, I can see its charm. The story unfolds with the warmth of a place where everyone knows everyone. The setting alone makes me want to pack my bags and move there, but adding an intriguing orc neighbor and possibly more orcs settling in Eastshore creates the perfect escape.
This is my first Veronika Kane book, and I’m so glad I stumbled upon it. It’s like discovering a hidden gem in your favorite cozy spot. Kane blends the fantasy element of an orc living next door with the everyday sweetness of small-town life in a magical way. She gives you a little bit of worry and anxiety, but she heals you perfectly with a satisfying happy ever after. It has the cozy vibes of a Hallmark movie but with the perfect hint of naughty, naughty spice, leaving me with a dreamy, satisfied feeling by the end.
The characters are endearing, especially the mature but not elderly Mrs. McGee. She's a treasure! Karnak, the orc next door, struggles with doubts about whether he belongs in this charming community. Paired with our sunshine, Jess, the two make the story heartwarming. It’s a tale about finding love and acceptance in this cozy little town.
"My Orc Next Door" made my day and left me smiling long after I turned the last page. I can’t wait to explore more of Veronika Kane’s work, especially after the little taste of Melli and Cairo. Oho! I feel like these two will do more than just make this little town cozy.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
4.75 stars. Karnak, the male orc lead, was part of the initial group that revealed their existence to humans. As part of the group who were investigated by scientists, he heard plenty about how they were scary to humans and should keep more or less hidden and on the fringes of human society. Now, living quietly on Eastshore Isle, he’s running an online business and maintaining his cultural crafts and skills. He know Jess, the female human lead and his next door neighbour, is his fated mate but he’s not going to approach her - he’s sure she wouldn’t be interested.
Jess is quite interested but hasn’t really had a reason to approach Karnak until he finds her searching for her lost cat. As they start to build a friendship, Jess works to convince Karnak that he’s a wanted and valuable member of the island’s community. As part of her local government role, she also convinces him that other orcs and supernatural beings would be welcome - she needs them to come if the island is to avoid having a tourist trap built for survival. But there’s a speciest developer on the island who desperately wants his planned resort to go ahead and he’s willing to do whatever he needs to make the Karnak problem go away…
This story is dual POV, well written, and a sweet, steamy, contemporary fantasy, romantic comedy. I enjoyed Jess’ determination to engage Karnak and get him involved in a community, regardless of whether they were more than friends or not. I enjoyed Karnak’s realisation that he wasn’t an unwanted outcast but that he could be an engaged and effective community member. I enjoyed the relationship development. I enjoyed the world building and the secondary characters. I’m looking forward to more in this series and world.
I received a complimentary copy from the author and this is my voluntary honest review.
I see some people have taken this story way too seriously. I would just say turn your brains off and enjoy, y'all. I mean, I get it. The villain should have faced more serious consequences (I personally would have loved to see him run out of town), and I get why some are upset with Jess for not sticking up for Karnak when that slimeball Geoffrey tried to have him arrested, but to me, it's understandable that she would've had doubts, especially given how Geoffrey would've thoroughly earned Karnak's wrath raining down upon his head.
But that aside, Jess and Karnak were cute together, and both felt like real individuals, especially Karnak with his doubts and insecurities. I just wish they could've figured out how to communicate much sooner and not hem-and-haw about their feelings for each other. I also wish that the story hadn't had to take a timeout to deal with Geoffrey and stuff going on with the town, delaying them professing said feelings.
As a side note, I could've done without Karnak's evolutionary quirk, the one that lets him give Jess a big ol' 'O' without any real effort. I mean, neat and all, but it just seemed unrealistic and over-the-top, even in a story where orcs and other 'monsters' are real. Also, Jess at one point compares Karnak's trouser snake to a pool noodle. Seriously?! Ouch! 😟
Anywho, looking forward to returning to Eastshore Isle real soon. Can't wait to read about Meli and Cairo next. 😊
😤☀️ Grumpy x Sunshine 🏖️ Small Town Romance 🧌 Orc Monster Romance 🏠 Next Door Neighbors 💗 Cinnamon Roll Hero (underneath all that grump!) 😍 Fated Mates 🥺 He’s Been Lonely So Long 🤝 Community Acceptance 🧘 Low Angst, High Heat 🐱 Kitties 🍂 Cozy Vibes 🌶️ 🌶️🌶️
𝐌𝐲 𝐎𝐫𝐜 𝐍𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐃𝐨𝐨𝐫 is such a fun and cozy delight! If you’re into sunshine x grump dynamics, this one delivers it in the absolute best way. Jess is pure joy and charm—adorable, hilarious, and impossible not to love. Her bubbly energy is the perfect contrast to Karnak’s gruff and reclusive nature, and watching her slowly break down his walls? Utterly heart-melting.
Karnak stole my heart. This big, broody orc has spent so many years keeping to himself, and I just wanted to give him the biggest hug. The way he softens around Jess, the delicious tension simmering between them—it was perfection. Their chemistry crackles, and the spice? Sizzling.
Beyond the romance, I loved seeing Jess help Karnak feel truly seen and welcomed in Eastshore Isle. Her kindness doesn’t just change his world—it shifts how the whole community views orcs and other nonhumans.
Also, I loved Meli and have to shout out Muffin and Pickles because they were the cutest little additions to this already heartwarming story. Between the top-tier banter, cozy vibes, and searing heat, this is a must-read for anyone needing a feel-good monster romance with tons of heart.
Omg what fantastic story this was and I do love to whole beach community vibe where everyone knows your name. Jess is on the Towns Council and has lived in Eastshore Isle for 4 yrs now and loves everything about her community but it needs help because businesses are closing and people are moving away and they need to come up with a plan to save there community and while she is dealing with that there is the issues with her sexy as sin Orc neighbor who star’s in all her fantasy even in the hot tub. Karnak is a beach loving Orc ad keeps to himself but when his new neighbor moved in he knew straight away that she was his mate but chose to stay away after his captivity where human hate everything about Orc’s and would never been seen dating one but Karnak struggles because he an smell everything about her and its stronger in the hot tub but he still stays away. When Jess asks for his help to find her kitten called Muffin who has run away he tells he it may already be to late with the other animals that are around and this start them down a path that they are so desperate want and soon they are steaming up the sheets and falling in love and if she can get him to vouch for there town maybe others will come but one of the council members doesn’t want anymore of his kind in the community. How does it all turn out, get this book to find out.
A cute and fluffy contemporary monster romance that is full of small town charm. Eastshore Isle is an island at risk, and it’s Jess’s job and personal passion to save it. Despite living next door to Karnak for four years, she barely knows her reclusive neighbor. Karnak, one of a few orcs who settled on Eastshore after surviving testing and education at government facilities, has known Jess is his fated mate since she moved in next door. He’s kept his distance because of a deep rooted belief that humans, women in particular, will only ever see him as a monster. Together, he and Jess figure out a way to save Eastshore Isle, foil the villain George A. Harrison, fall madly in love with each other, and make way for happily ever after. Despite its light-heartedness, I appreciated how the story explored speciesism and discussed Karnak’s past experiences and fears. Couldn’t put this book down and look forward to the next one with Meli!
Age gap: Not explicitly stated, both characters likely in their early to mid-30s.
SFCP (safe for childless people); main characters do not get pregnant/have a baby.
I received an ARC version of this book in exchange for an honest and voluntary review.
No....just no. How is it already this bad 10% in? All the cringey Muffin stuff was bad enough. Then our fearless main character flashes the male lead because he startles her and she turns around so fast her robe falls open. Then she goes on to tell us how creepy she is attempting to catch a glimpse of him every single morning. Then we get the main male character's POV which is slightly better. However the interactions between our 2 main characters are officially the worst. Jess comes off as condescending with a side of cannot keep her mind out of the gutter for any length of time. She yells at a man she barely knows about what friendship is. Karnak comes off very stupid and very repetitive. Plus he sees her ass and refers to it as 2 pale slippery globes......ick. That was where I opted to stop reading.
Also this is an actual line uttered by the female lead “It’s like…it’s like a little baby angel came down to earth and pooped in my mouth.” and the person she says this too is flattered. Like what the actual fuck?
I'm sure all of this is meant to be lighthearted and funny and provide us with some amusing sexual tension. Unfortunately absolutely nothing about this book is working for me. This series and this author are now on my do not read list.

“I don’t want any other female, Jess. You are my Mate, and always have been.” It wasn’t I love you. It was better.

If you take this book too seriously, this may not be the genre for you. This is a monster rom-com, and the humor is pretty immature, relying on euphemism, cultural/language differences between orcs and humans and breaking the fourth wall for laughs. It definitely won’t be for everyone, but I enjoyed it enough to continue the series.
The MCs are neighbors, and while the MMC has known that the FMC is his mate for the past four years, she has no idea and he intends to keep it that way as long as possible. He doesn’t feel welcome among humans, but she just wants to be his friend. As they spend more time together they find that they aren’t just attracted to each other physically but they genuinely enjoy spending time together and getting to know each other. Of course there is a little bit of drama with the town’s resident racist whiner who thinks he is owed anything he wants, but the issues are solved in a straightforward way with a minimal amount of angst.
This was a cute, light spice, cozy romance. I really want to see what happens. Jess's idea to save the town will lead to some fun story lines (spoilers).
"Look, there are plenty of things I just learned about the gorgeous, seven-foot-tall perfect specimen of male living next door to me:
If I can’t convince him this town is perfect for him, then how can I prove I’m perfect for him, too?"
My Orc Next Door by Veronika Kane and Caroline Lee transforms the “monster romance” trope into something tender, funny, and deeply human. Beneath its cheeky premise a human woman and her massive orc neighbor finding love in a struggling beach town lies a story about belonging, vulnerability, and healing.
Kane and Lee balance humor with heart, crafting a romance that’s as much about community as chemistry. The banter is electric, but what lingers is the emotional depth: Karnak’s quiet self-denial, his fear of rejection, and the heroine’s determination to rebuild not just her town, but the lonely soul next door.
Through its blend of playful sensuality and emotional honesty, My Orc Next Door stands out as a work that normalizes love beyond convention. It’s a warm, romantic meditation on what it means to be seen truly seen by another, even when you feel unworthy of it. Fans of Ice Planet Barbarians and A Soul to Keep will find a new favorite here, one that glows with both wit and genuine feeling.
