She did actually do most of her homework, but quickly so as to have more time to stare out of the window thinking about heroes. Stay in school, kids. Kate has done a variety of not-particularly great jobs, ranging from airport check-in to lab assistant, but much prefers writing for a living. For one thing, the hours are better, and no one ever tells her off for not ironing her shirt. In fact, the lack of ironing might be the single greatest advantage to being an author. Kate loves going off at mad tangents, which you’d surely never have guessed, but also enjoys reading romance and fantasy, watching funny stuff on TV, drinking coffee by the gallon and occasionally leaving the house. The Untied Kingdom is her first novel to be published in the UK.

Lo recomiendo bastante para pasar el rato, aunque seguramente no sea el romance de tu vida, sí que lo recomiendo para leer un romance en la spooky season!

The only downside is that I'm a bit rusty at English atm and they use "old-ish" English, so there were paragraphs that I had a hard time understanding. I recommend it as a light-read; even though it probably won't be your best romance, I do recommend it as a spooky season romance!

September 10, 2024I eventually decided to not finish this book at 28%. Hex and the City was an amazing book. I enjoyed the setting, the chaos and most of all the characters and their magic. I was therefore really excited about this book and when I saw it on Netgalley I immediately grabbed a copy. However, over a quarter of the book in I still can't care less about any of the characters. The book seems to be a description of anything that is happening, but the emotional part of the book seems not present. Although I already read more than a quarter of the book, both characters are still strangers to me. The plot also feels all over the place. I didn't mind the chaos in the other book by this author, especially because it fit the heroine of that story, but this book truly lacks direction. There are mentions of disappeared ships, sirens and krakens, but the characters are also focussing on dance lessons and learning magic. There are also side characters who are barely introduced even though they are playing a big part. In general. I'm 28% in and there is so far nothing really grabbing me to keep reading. I've therefore decided to not finish this book and spent my time on books that interest me more.

Just an easy, light read for fall!
This one was just okay for me. I felt like the plot was a bit rushed and not fully fleshed out. I also felt that way with the relationships between Tiffany, her family, and the witches.
But, all in all, I thought Tiffany and Santiago were sweet, the story was cute, it was entertaining enough to keep me going (it got better as it went along), and it just felt like a cozy, witchy read with some Bridgerton vibes!

I liked the first two books in this series, and I’m sure the story in this one would be enjoyable for many people, but I unfortunately HATED the pacing. The first chapter was over 50 pages long, and constantly jumped between two POVs without any warning.
The dialogue was messy & I was struggling to remain engaged 🫠

This book was so cute, I had the best time reading it. I love everything regarding the Regency and everything witchy, so this was something I was of course set to enjoy. I already read a book by this author last year, and I also liked it a lot, but I think I enjoyed this one even more.
Tiffany and Santiago, the two main characters in the novel, are enjoyable and I absolutely felt the chemistry between them. This book is mainly a romance novel with specks of magic and witchcraft, so I didn't expect a lot of world building and I was right. The witchy aspect of it all is really simple, but also really compelling. I loved seeing this group of women really thriving in their power, and also I loved that Tiffany got her own found family. It was just rewarding to see.
What I didn't particularly enjoy was that the ending was a bit forced in my opinion. It's not very coherent with what Tifanny spends all of the book saying, it's juite a 360 to be honest, and while I enjoyed the relationship between Tifanny and Santiago, and I get that the period of time entailed some sort of social conventions, I still didn't particularly like it a lot. It was a bit rushed.
Other than that, if you, like me, like everything historical, especially the Regency era, and everything witchy, I think this could be the story for you!

Perfect for Bridgerton lovers who want to spice up Regency London with a bit of witchy romtasy. Lady Tiffany Worthington learns to manage her magic gifts with help from her great aunt Esme and discovers a world filled with love, adventure, and healing. Adored it!

This did the historical romance with magic, right. There were a lot of little nuggets, outside of the main plot, that will thrill anyone who likes history. I liked how this was set during a very important period of history, but it didn't over-shadow the actual plot. It was just dropped here and there, and really made me happy.
The romance is a bit contrived, but at least it stayed true to the time. I didn't feel as though the morals and expectations of the 21st Century were shoved into Regency England. I understood why Tiffany (Main Character) yearned for the life that being a witch would provide for her, clashing horribly with what she felt for Santiago (the love interest). I felt that the back and forth, why they had so many clashes, why they couldn't just be together, was properly handled. I would really advocate for the book to be read due to how it reminds me of 'Pride & Prejudice'. I'm not the biggest Jane Austen fan, I've only read 3 of them, but this makes sure that it stays true to the time period. And while this is more of a fairy-tale, especially with the ending, at least it doesn't veer away from what is expected of Tiffany. The restrictions around her, even if she does decide to become a witch.
I would highly recommend this one. I've rambled through this entire review, but I hope it makes enough sense for someone else to pick up the book.

Every new book in this series has always been a must read, as they’re the cosiest, loveliest and most easily readable books out there. Peppered with romance and magic, they’re easy to while away the hours into a good book with.
And this one, set in the regency era and with all the hype of Bridgerton, if you love witches, magic and this historical period, it’s a must read!
Lady Tiffany is your typical regency lady, except she doesn’t want to get married, she loathes ruffles and the pink that dulls her complexion and finds out she’s a witch. So, maybe not typical at all! But when she meets an eligible duke with a somewhat of a piratical air, she is still adamant she doesn’t want to marry. Except…
It was so entertaining and certainly made my train journey go faster! As always, I seem to finish them in no time and thoroughly enjoyed the historical element of this book.

This is a very easy to read regency romance that is perfect for Bridgerton fans. Our main character is a witch in the Ton that does not want to marry. I loved her little circle or witches, although their characters remained rather flat.
I did totally adore the Duke. A Duke who's a rugged pirate? Now that's what I'm takking about! The addition of Billy and De Groot were also welcome and I did enjoy them.
The romance between Tiffany and Santiago was a predictable yet enjoyable one. I loved the regency x magic x monster mystery combo, which was new for me. I will definitely read more of this writer's books!

This was just so charming, and the magic was so much fun. I think it's my favorite Kate Johnson book so far. I loved the combination of witches and Regency romance. Tiffany and Santiago were amazing together, and I adored the other witches. There was also an intriguing mystery and a good amount of humor. All around, this was an excellent read!

T three hundred pages in Bridgerton Land with a salt sprinkle of witchery, to then be catapulted into time travel and full on mind magic. The sudden change gave me whiplash, but I honestly enjoyed the last like seventy pages of the book the most out of the entire thing.
The title hints at Jane Austen’s classic ‘Sense and Sensability’, but more than the Regency time period it did not inherit anything from this great tale.

Cute, chaotic, funny story. Kate Johnson has done it again for a fun time romance read! Bridgerton vibes are for real in this book with witches and more drama. Regency formality with touches and stares and tension! I would say it's a slow burn for a stand alone romance with a bunch of miscommunication. The characters are funny, diverse, quarky and have tons of personality. The magic is kind of those who have it only have a super specialized style. And the setting is built very well. The only thing that lowers the score is how chaotic and out of the blue her plots get sometimes. Nevertheless it is a fun read!

An amusing historical novel, blending fantasy and romance, “Hex and Hexability”, by Kate Johnson, features likeable and relatable characters that feel real despite the witchery.
I loved how Santiago and Tiffany are comfortable with each other since the beginning, their light disagreements and banter, and the basic honesty that marks the relationship.
The easy acceptance by Santiago of Tiffany’s abilities/peculiarities and the admiration, respect and even awe he manifests is compelling, too.
Even people not that much interested in fantasy will like the natural way witchery happens, with lots of humor and a bit of mischief.
These characters have vulnerabilities and fears, overcame their circumstances, and are stronger and more human because of that.
I appreciated the caring and sweetness between the leads, mixed with desire, yearning and sensuality.
There are great secondary characters, too, and I was particularly fond of Billy.

If you are looking for bridgerton meets witchcraft, this book is for you. I couldn’t put this down no matter how many times I tried. I loved everything about this book. The main characters were so much fun and the side characters really added to it. There is a mix of adventure that was quite enjoyable to read. I can’t wait to read the Hex Appeal!

Lady Tiffany Worthington, who has always had an uncontrollable knack for animating her surroundings, discovers she's a witch when her great aunt Esme arrives before the Battle of Waterloo. This revelation introduces her to a hidden, magical side of London teeming with sea creatures, portals, time travel, and a dashing pirate-like duke who helps her learn to embrace her powers and defy societal expectations.
This was such a fun and easy read that I just sat and read it all in one go! Regency-set paranormal romances/romantasies are my holy grail and this one definitely didn't disappoint. The mix of the witchy plot and the romance development was perfect. There's no filler in this book and always something interesting happening so I just flew through it!
I loved all the characters. Everyone was distinct and interesting and I loved the group of witches and the found family vibe. I was immediately invested in Tiffany and Santiago's relationship and I loved the slow burn!

while i really wanted to enjoy this book, i must say it didnt catch my attention. i tried reading it but i didnt want to pick it back up. i do like the idea here, i like the witchy part, and i see the chemistry, so i do not even know what exactly made me dnf this. i wish i could explain. i think it might just be the writing style? there is also the possibility that if i read this at another time, it would have suited me more.

At about the halfway point I almost gave up. I didn’t care about the characters, I didn’t know where things were going most of the time, but I powered through. Sort of glad I did, sort of not. I wish they had woven the past characters in a little sooner. It was at the end that they brought past characters in, like Lilith. I had felt so confused half the time because I couldn’t understand how they were connected and I settled to believe they weren’t. Now I’m here trying to google how the books are related because I suspect some of these characters are the woman who occupied the house in the first book… BUT I don’t remember any of their names so… It was a fun read at the end when things started getting exciting, but I do have to say… I never felt like he was a pirate… I almost felt like it was more told to us and not shown. So it was hard to connect him with that. And even at the end, his friend being the person to betray him… I didn’t even know who his friend was… so guess I did lose interest and stopped listen at certain points. I think I could have enjoyed this WAY more had I known the books were gonna be connected, especially after dnfing the second book in the series.
I hated their lack of communication. She didn’t want to marry him because she wanted to be a witch, but he never said he hated her being a witch. I also didn’t like that she never really knew that he wasn’t going to marry her because he knew she didn’t want to marry him. And he was respecting that, he knew she never wanted to marry. I hated their lack of communication. She didn’t want to marry him because she wanted to be a witch, but he never said he hated her being a witch. I also didn’t like that she never really knew that he wasn’t going to marry her because he knew she didn’t want to marry him. And he was respecting that, he knew she never wanted to marry. But then she was like I love you, I’ll marry you… only because he was dying??? Idk…. ✩₊˚.⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧ Hex and Hexability is an easy to read, cute regency romcom with a twist of witches and pirates.
We follow our main character, Tiffany (or Theophania), who is coming out to Society and must attend balls to meet suitors and be displayed like a pretty doll and be a show of virtue, which she finds dull. Tiffany is at a ball when the chalk drawings on the floor begin to move, and she runs outside to get away and stumbles into a man named Santiago (who is wearing green velvet - who does such a thing!).
After the ball, Tiffany receives a letter from a Great Aunt Esme, who indeed is a witch, and tells Tiffany she is too. From here, Santiago and Tiffany run into one another again due to an odd, magical situation, and they become bound to one another through a bargain.
For this being a romance book - it takes such a long time for the love interests to get together, that I lost my own interest along the way!
⋆.ೃ࿔*:･ I did enjoy our quippy, rugged Santiago, but I did not much care for our Lady Tiffany. I found her character quite annoying at times.
There was a very odd plot twist at the end that I did not quite understand, and it really threw me(how do we end up on Normandy Beach of all places lol).
Overall, the entirety of the story felt quite simple, from the characters, the plot, word choice, and writing style. However, it’s cute and easy to read if you want something like that!

A very enjoyable fall/spooky season read! 🍂
This is a dual POV, Regency Era romantasy with a little bit of spice.
Only when Tiffany's great-aunt Esme reaches out to her (after a very chaotic ball!), does she learn about the nature and truth of her powers. While she grapples with the strict beliefs she grew up with versus the potential her abilities brings, she must also teach a very infuriating (and sexy) pirate the ways of the aristocracy 😌
The romance between Tiffany and Santiago is very cute and funny to read about. I don't really care for the miscommunication moments—not my cup of tea, and I loathe it most of the time—but I love how they find and challenge each other. Also, Santiago, with his “You go, girl!” attitude is a new favourite of mine 😁
Of course, they both have a tragic past, but they have to bond over more stuff than just mutual attraction, right?
I also don't care for Tiffany's sister-in-law (I hate everything she preaches), but she brings a very interesting dynamic into Tiffany's life and the story.
The witch coven, oh, the with coven, are my favourite! No notes. No complaints 🙌🏼

This one took me a little bit to get into, but when it got going, I enjoyed it! It was a light, cute read if you’re looking for a regency, historical romance with some witchy flare!
The initial back and forth of povs were a little confusing and rocky, so it was harder to keep my attention. There were just some parts where the writing was difficult to follow which would pull me out of the story, but thankfully didn’t pull me from the whole book completely.
The adventures, witches and magic were so much fun, but the romance didn’t quite hit it for me. I thought the main characters were great and well developed, but I didn’t quite feel their chemistry together. It was a very slowww burn but the buildup didn’t have the substance that would make you fall in love with the romance. It was pretty surface level, but still cute with bridgerton vibes.
It was an overall good read, and I would recommend for those looking for a lighthearted and magical regency romance.

This is basically Bridgerton with magic and it's so much fun!
I thoroughly enjoyed Kate Johnson's other witchy books so was really excited when this regency-era offering from the same magical universe was announced.
Just as with the previous two books, the magic is loads of fun and a bit silly. There are some characters who have popped up a few times and who I now want to know even more about. Then, of course, there is some romance.
The relationship between Tiffany and Santiago was so entertaining. It's obvious from the start that they'll end up together but all the twists and turns they deal with before that point are interesting and keep you guessing.
If you're hoping for a lot of spice, you'll be disappointed. There's a tiny bit but the witchy ways and adventure are the main focus of this story.
I really hope there are more books coming from this world, especially as I need to know what caused a certain witch's obsession with Napoleon...

Having read Hex and the City last year I knew I would enjoy Hex and Hexability too, but actually I was pleasantly surprised that it did not fit my expectations! I thought it would be a light, seasonal read - which it is - but Kate Johnson’s first take on a historical novel did not disappoint and I loved the regency romance x witch vibe! Santiago was an excellent MMC, quietly observing and protecting those around him who are most vulnerable, and I enjoyed seeing his swaggering piratical veneer crumble as he fell further in love with Lady Tiffany. I also loved seeing Tiffany come into her own and out of the claws of Elinor, and the found family she discovered with Esme, Madhu, Billy and the gang.
All in all, an enjoyable, witchy novel that’s perfect for spooky season. A big thank you to the publishers and Netgalley for the e-ARC.
