Cherry Blossoms After Winter, Vol. 1: The fan-favourite Boys’ Love comic, now a K-drama

Rate this book
Despite growing up together, these childhood friends have grown apart. The
fan-favorite boys' love manhwa turned K-drama comes to print for the first time.

Seo Haebom was seven years old when his parents died in an accident. With nowhere
else to go, he moves in with the family of his childhood friend Jo Taesung, who
suddenly grows cold and distant, destroying their friendship.

Now it’s their senior year of high school and, after years of barely speaking to each other,
Haebom and Taesung are in the same class for the first time. Haebom struggles to make
friends and is plagued by bullying, but after the handsome and popular Taesung fends off
his most persistent bully, everything changes – they sit together at lunch and begin to act
like friends again. Haebom is unsure what to make of the change, but this could be his last
chance to mend their relationship.

Volume 1 includes episodes 1-15 of the webcomic Cherry Blossoms After Winter.

update, (june 3/25). honestly this is cute but it's not holding my attention at the moment and i don't feel like pushing myself more to read it. so i'm putting this on hold for now.

season 1, episodes 1-30. (may 11/25): i thought i was going to have better things to say but.....anyway, this was cute and kinda boring. i think i'm going to continue but probably slowly because it's not holding my attention yet so far. 🤕

pre-read: how adorable are the covers omg!! i watched the bl to this when it first came out so i'm excited to see the manhwa version. i remember them being cute af 🥺which is exactly what i need after finishing checkmate.

Adorable characters

Need a heartstopper-esque fix? Here's your solution. Bamwoo brought the characters, the feels and a solid plot. The characters were 19 but in college/high school.

Haebom was orphaned at a young age and taken in by his mother's friend who had a son (Taesung) the same age. In their late teens these two had a confused relationship or rather, a lack of one. This story was about their connection, friendship and a lot of vibes.

Haebom was bullied at school and much of the plot focused on his experiences and Taesung realising and standing up for him. It was cute and these two were pretty adorable. There was no on-page affection but definitely some bubbling chemistry.

When it finished, I was left wanting more. This graphic novel was so easy to get into, to like and I really enjoyed the artwork. I appreciated that the size of the book was A5 not bigger, it was comfortable to read in all the ways.

Thank you Inklore Books for the review copy. You have made me a fan!

The misunderstanding between the leads is frustrating, and I hope the bullying subplot wraps up soon, but the adorable art and tender connection between the leads will keep me reading.

I gotta say that this is a super sweet start to a new series for me. A friend has been telling me I’d like it and I gotta say she was spot on. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

'I'm fine, so stop pouting.'

Going into Cherry Blossoms After Winter without knowing anything about was a bit of a shock since I had no idea it's not really a manhwa but a webtoon and apparently there's a mature version as well as a K-drama.

Haebom is the wholesome main character who just cannot stand up for himself while Taesung is one of the popular high schoolers. Despite living under the same roof ever since Haebom's parents died and being friends, Haebom and Taesung don't really acknowledge each other. Rather, Haebom tries his best to stay out of Taesung's way because he feels unwanted in his home and Taesung seems pretty nonchalant about it all but probably isn't at all. Things finally start changing between them, though when they both end up together in the same class for their senior year and Taesung sees Haebom getting bullied day in and day out.

Overall, cuute but also, eh at all the bullying and very trope-y characters so far. I will definitely continue, though because I see and hope for the potential (the cake reveal scene eeee) now that we are over the miscommunication of it all.

The art is fine and very minimal. The covers are definitely superior to the art inside, TBH

I found this one hard to rate... It's very complicated because of the bullying going on in here. I understand Haebom all to well but I also very strongly feel a huge part of this is the fault of Taesung. They have been going to the same school for years and years so I don't believe that Taesung wasn't aware of this stuff going on. He must have been. The whole entire school knows that Haebom is a "lackey" so how can his own brother not know?

So am I supposed to believe now that on their final year of school that Taesung is the white knight on the white horse charging in to rescue him? He needed to fix that years ago, before Haebom ended up with mental health issues. He will end up with PTSD (C-PTSD). He is already a people pleaser. He is constantly saying "sorry" for things not his fault. He doesn't know how to walk along side someone as a friend. Because his self esteem is a fat zero.

Where was Taesung when he actually needed him, to PREVENT this problem? Now he will suffer his whole life. Because he doesn't believe he has any self worth. And buying him cake isn't going to fix that.

Popular kids know everything that goes on in a school. Taesung is popular.

I really don't like Taesung. Because he had allowed this to happen. It'll take YEARS of therapy to try to fix that...

The artwork is great.

Yeah, I know Taesung is supposed to be seen as the hero but unfortunately I don't see it that way. He needed a hero years ago...

Just this first issue does not want me to read the rest at all.

So cute 😭 we have some silly miscommunication and rude bullying at the start, but their bond coming together is so tender 🫶 I also love the mom, she's so nice!

Thank you to Inklore who sent me a physical copy of this.

I’ve never come across this comic before but I really enjoyed it. It’s been a while since I’ve read a high school BL. The artwork is pretty, if a little simplistic but I put this down to the origin being a web comic which often have this issue. The character design isn’t anything outstanding but the colours are nicely done and all the characters are easy to tell apart so that’s important! The comic being full colour is definitely a benefit of web comics as you avoid tones for hair looking too similar like in manga.

The plot follows two men (they’re 19 so) who have been living together for ten years. Haebom’s parents died in an accident when he was 8 and he’s been living with his mums best friend and her son ever since. A father isn’t mentioned so maybe the reason is she knows what loss is like. Or maybe he’s just in the office 24/7, we know office workers in Korea and Japan work crazy hours.

Either way they haven’t been on speaking terms this whole time and Haebom is being bullied at school. Their final year rolls around and suddenly they’re in the same class and his adoptive brother starts to see how horribly bullied Haebom is. To me it’s implied the reason he was so against Haebom moving is in because he fancied him and didn’t want them to be ‘brothers’. Anyway it’s mostly a bullying fest right now but things have improved and now they’re going to school together and being shy at each other.

Oh!!! I really love this!!

At first, I wasn't sure how I was feeling about it, given the translation felt a little off and Haebom's heartbreaking situation at school and overall depression, but his relationship with Taesung, and Taesung in general, completely saved it for me. Like seriously, Taesung... he's perfect to me. I can't help it. I love characters who are cool and standoffish, but also extremely gentle and sweet and protective toward the person they like... AND he's ALSO a petty bitch who will play power games with Haebom's bullies??? AND he's also been in love with Haebom the entire time???? (I am assuming) He's perfect. I love him.

And Haebom! He's so cute, and so very depressed, and that breaks my heart. I really hope Taesung can help him realize that he's not a burden, and that he didn't want to be his brother for... reasons other than what Haebom thought lol.

Really excited to keep reading this series as it comes out, and definitely going to check out the drama soon.

Soft bullied boy and his protector boy. Be still my heart!!

Haebom and Taesung are childhood friends. After Haebom loses his parents in an accident, he ends up living with Taesung and his mom. After hearing Taesung say he doesn't want Haebom as his brother, Haebom grows up isolating himself from him. Fast forward to when they're 18/19, Haebom's bullied in class but Taesung's in his class now and sees Haebom being bullied for the first time. Lots of intervening on his end and they're slowly making up.

It's cute, I'm compelled, I'm in danger.

RECAP MOMENTS: birthday money return, snack bar, he reveals that he's been buying Haebom the cakes since he knows he only choose cream bread because of the price. Ends on chapter 15, when Taesung sits next to Haebom in class.

4.5 ✨

I’ve read this several years ago when it was TappyToon and absolutely loved it! I’m happy that this manwha is now in physical form. The formatting of this is really concise and I’ve always loved the main characters. This was funny, emotional, as well as heartwarming. I can’t wait to reread the rest of the cast and see the growth of Haebom and Taesung’s relationship. this volume left off at a good point as well.

Thank you Inklore for this ARC!

I thought this would be fun, but I ATE THIS UP. This was such an amazing book, and I enjoyed it tremendously. It was kind of slow, which I liked because it made me keep coming back for more. I am beyond hyped for volume 2, and I cannot wait to continue this! A must read for fans of Heartstopper.

Haebom & Taesung have become adoptive brothers after Haebom’s parents died tragically in a car accident and Taesung’s mother agrees to take Haebom in. But this upsets Taesung, and they spend the next several years avoiding each other. Now, it’s senior year, and the two are in the same class. So are Haebom's bullies, and Taesung gets a front row seat to the tormenting Haebom gets on the daily. Taesung, the smart, beautiful, athletic, and popular class darling, must choose whether he'll let Haebom continue to be picked on or if he'll use his power and influence to help Haebom start standing up for himself.

Seasoned readers of BL will clue in pretty quickly why Taesung didn't want Haebom to live with them, but less experienced readers might be along for the ride on this slow-burn romance. As Taesung begins to stand up for Haebom and show his protectiveness, the story becomes very sweet. Haebom's bullies are pretty one-dimensional and classic stereotypes, so there is a part of me that hopes we are done with them so they can be gone, but another part of me hopes that they can come back and have some more depth or development and not just be a trope. Bamwoo has put a lot of effort into Taesung and Haebom to make them relatable and likeable, but so far, other characters are only around to serve as plot points or decoration. Regardless, romance fans will enjoy the misunderstandings and revelations between the two leads as they finally understand and open up to each other about years of unrequited love.

Despite this first volume being relatively tame, Inklore rates the series as adult. Down the road, the series supposedly includes adult scenes, but those volumes haven't been released as of this writing.

I cannot express how much I adore this manga. Every single thing about it. From the art, to the characters, to the story.

TBH, I thought I had outgrown my step-sibling kink fixation, but here we are.

Not that Haebom and Tae Sung are brothers. Or even step-brothers. But they are raised together, from a very young age, by Tae Sung's single mom. So.... yeah. Step-brothers.

The breadth and duration of the misunderstanding that has kept Haebom and Tae Sung from being friends is absolutely absurd.

I do not care. I am a total simp for it.

Haebom is shy and friendless and bullied. Tae Sung is popular asf, considered very handsome, and oozes confidence. He is also Ali Hazelwood levels obsessed and broody for Haebom (not that Haebom has a clue).

I would read a million stories just like this one. It makes me so happy.

NOTE: This manga has 3 seasons. I thought Volume 1 (this book) would be all of season 1. It is NOT. This book is just part 1 of season 1.

If you are a perv like me, know that all of season 1 (so Volumes 1, 2, and 3) are CLEAN romance. Nothing untoward happens. The characters are in High School.

Seasons 2 and 3 are where the clean romance turns dirty. Very dirty. XXX dirty. This shit did things to me. Why couldn't it last forever??? Love. Love. LOVE.

3.5🌟

I’m not the biggest fan of the trope of (in essence) the main characters are step siblings and they get together…but I might be able to let it slide for this series. It’s clear that the reason Taesung didn’t want Haebom as a brother was because of other already brewing emotions for him. His mom taking in Haebom as his guardian definitely complicated things.

Beyond that, this so far is a very run of the mill story. We have Haebom who is being bullied by his classmates, and Taesung who finally is aware of the bullying and starts doing something about it. We see the two of them grow progressively closer not only as Taesung learns about Haebom’s situation, but as they actually start talking about the miscommunication that happened. It’s honestly very sweet to have them slowly uncover what they’ve done to benefit each other.

The artwork in this is also lovely! It’s just so pleasant to look at 😍 The color scheme is also right up my alley. I always enjoy softer colors. It makes for a more soothing reading experience.

Anyway. I’m planning to continue reading this series for the time being ✨

At first, I loved this read. A boy lost his parents and lived in a home with another little boy not wanting a little brother, and the struggle in high school while being bullied. Then the two boys begin mending their relationship, I love that kind of story, it's one not told often. Then, it proceeds to implicate a romantic relationship and then even has a rumor spreading at the end of it being LGBTQ+. I love LGBTQ+ books, I am bi myself, and I buy them because I believe there are many LGBTQ+ stories that should be told. As far as this book goes, it is not 100% my favorite because of the "adopted" relationship trope, but it is still an amazing read!
