Ten years ago, Vadim Ivanov broke my heart. Now he’s back. Bringing death and chaos with him.
VADIM
Hearing Kesera’s voice on the radio makes me want her. But wanting a woman won’t help me win a mafia war, especially not the mother of my child. I can’t expose them to the violence in my world. Love makes you vulnerable. It’s a luxury I can’t afford.
She needs to disappear, even if she takes my heart with her a second time.
KESERA
I spent a decade searching for a man who didn’t want to be found. I learned to fight my own battles and bring up our daughter like her father never existed.
Now he thinks he can tell me what to do. I don’t take orders, even from a mafia boss.
Even if he’s the man I love.
Can love survive odds like this?
Brutal Secrets is a second-chance mafia romance with adult themes. The first in the Night Governor Bratva series—it’s a standalone with no cliff-hanger and a happily-ever-after guaranteed.
❤️🔥 Russian Mafia ❤️🔥 Singer FMC ❤️🔥 Overprotective MMC ❤️🔥 Surprise Pregnancy ❤️🔥 Emotional Rollercoaster ❤️🔥 Age Gap ❤️🔥 Second Chance Romance
WOW! This book was the pure definition of emotional rollercoaster with twist and turns at every direction.
Vadim is the mafia daddy we all dream of having. While he’s full of secrets and mood swings that give you whiplash, he’s only doing it to protect the ones he loves.
“I’m nobody’s hero zolotaya. I’m not a good man and you shouldn’t put your trust in me.”
Kesera is just trying to live her dream and make it as a country singer. She’s gone through some traumatic situations at the hands of her disgusting manager. But she later stands up for herself and proves she’s as strong as she always has been inside.
“You’re here. But you’ll never really be with me.”
When these two come together, HOLY HOTNESS 🥵🔥🥵. Their chemistry is undeniable! Even all the years they spent apart couldn’t cool down the fire between these two.
If you love mafia romance you’ll regret not reading this book. It’s an absolute must add to your TBR. I cannot wait to read Sasha’s story!!!
I was so lucky to receive an ARC of this book and was excited to dive it and let me tell you...it did not disappoint!!!
Russian Mafia, Italian Mafia and a Singer.. the makings of a great story right here!
This was an absolute roller-coaster and I think I ended up with whiplash!!
Kesera is young and alone, an up-and-coming Singer with a skeezy, slimy Manager. She's strong and resilient but so gentle and timid.
Vadim is dangerous and mysterious, but with so much love to give...if he is brave enough to let someone in.
The first part of the book was good, with a good back story on the characters but it was a little slow....the time spent at the dachka was the best part! But, fast forward 10 years and that's when the fun begins. This second part of this book was bloody amazing!! I started it at 10pm last night (stupid, I know!!) and was up until 3am reading....I didn't want to stop but I needed some sleep!! I finished this as soon as I opened my eyes this morning!!
My first Raven Carlysle book but definitely not my last!!

The sparks of heat between the main characters. The danger and hell of a lot of angst. The suspense and the happening in between.
Vadim and Kesera met in moscow where she was singing, and he was literally gripping by her voice and beauty. Kesera was saved by Vadim from her slimy manager. They them spent time away from the world for a while until reality and real life kicked in. 10 years later, she has not moved past Vadim, and Kesera finds him again only to find out he knew where she and their daughter were all along.
Loved this. Absolutely loved Vadim. But Kesera is totally badass. The way she handled that manager! 👏
Definitely recommend 👌

What an emotional roller coaster this book was! You know they want to be together but that Bratva attitude of self-sabotage wont let him! UGH!
Vadim is what you’d want from a Russian Mafia Daddy 100%. He’s protective, domineering, just caring enough, and knows his way around the bedroom!
Sera starts off as a lovesick puppy, but grows into a strong woman who takes no shit and holds down many different responsibilities at once.
It was frustrating watching them go back and forth so much, but the story that was woven into between their “will-they-wont-they” moments kept you into the story.
Decent amount of spice and lots of different fantasies being played out!
Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Spice:🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Themes: age gap, popstar FMC, Russian Mafia MMC, secret baby, second chance, morally gray
* Thank you Raven Carlyle for for the ARC.* All thoughts are my own- quotes are taken from the book.
Kesera is an up and coming pop star who was booked for a personal show in Moscow. After her show, her manager Jimmy wants more than just money from her. That’s when he steps in.
“I think that the little songbird here might like to come with me”
Vadim was mesmerized by Kesera the moment he saw her. His songbird. When patrolling the halls backstage, hd hears her struggling so he intervenes. Alone together at the dacha the two collide. One is hoping for more, while the other knows it can’t be so.
“I’m nobody’s hero, zolotaya. I’m not a good man, and you shouldn’t put your trust in me.”
After ten years, Kesera finally see the ghost she’s been looking for. What secrets have stayed hidden since that time at the dacha? How will these two complete different worlds collide, and who will be destroyed in the collision?
I really enjoyed this book. I loved the duel settings of both Russia and the USA. Kesera is amazing. In the first half she is timid and going through the motions. When she meets Vadim one weekend together helps her gain the confidence to stand up for herself. After that she rocks the life she is given and is able to stand her ground! Even when it’s to Vadim. Vadim is an amazing morally gray MMC. The conflict between his wants and what he feels is right is a constant internal struggle. At his core, he wants what is good for Kesera and is willing to hurt himself to achieve it. The side characters are well written and help set up other books within the series. The spice is well written and supports the plot rather than drive the plot. I really can’t wait for the next book in the series! Thank you Raven for gifting me an ARC!
Singer Kesera is a new star performing a show in Moscow where she meets Vadim, a member of the Russian mafia. The two spend one magical night together before Kesera has to return to the U.S. Fast forward ten years, and Kesera is a superstar with a ten-year-old daughter. When she meets Vadim again, will their old feelings still be there, and will he be able to keep them safe?
This was a different kind of mafia romance for me. Most of the story is focused on the angst and slow burn of the romance between Kesera and Vadim. The feelings are deeply emotional as Vadim begins to accept that he wants to be part of his family despite believing if he stays away, Kesera and Nadia will be safer. Both Vadim and Kesera have suffered losses, so they have a good understanding of each other. I particularly like the aspect of the story focusing on Kesera as a businesswoman. Everyone wants a piece of her, but Vadim is different. She can lean on him for support without writing him a paycheck, and he seems like more of a real man than the other men in her life.
Brutal Secrets is the first book in the Night Governor Bratva series. Read it and let me know what you think - I’d love to discuss.
Brutal Secrets was a very surprising and compelling read.
I have quite a complicated relationship with mafia romances. I always seem to love the synopsis but never the actual book, it's actual quite rare when I find myself truly immersed and engaged in one.
This is one of those rare gems.
I was immersed, I was captivated, and wholly invested.
Vadim and Kesera were terrific leads. I loved Kesera, she had an uphill battle and never stopped climbing that mountain. She was a protagonist you effortlessly root for. A protagonist so deserving of all the happiness. I struggled in liking Vadim as a protagonist, yet I could not take my eyes off him. Regardless of likability, he is a fantastically compelling characters whose layers you want to eagerly discover.
Although I did find the relationship between the leads very compelling, I honestly struggled to find where the love story was. I definitely did not doubt the bond and chemistry between Kesera and Vadim, they were absolutely meant to be, but I did wish for more time romancing in the present day.
Nevertheless, it was so nice to read a mafia romance and find myself enjoying it as much as I did.
Thank you Grey's Promotions for gifting me an arc, I leave this honest review voluntarily. 3.5
I had the honour of reading this book as an ARC, and loved everything about it.
Kasera is a singer, and is singing for the Russian elite in Moscow, at the end of her set, she returns to her backstage room, and is set upon by her manager Jimmy, who tries to assault her.
Vadim works for the Russian Mafia, and is working the security for the event. As soon as Kasera starts singing, he’s mesmerised by her voice, and herself. He’s never felt like this before. As he’s patrolling the building at the end of the night, he hears screaming and when he walks into the room, he sees Kasera being assaulted. He draws his weapon and rescues her.
He takes her to the mafia cottage in the forest just outside Moscow to keep her safe, where they spend the next two days getting very well acquainted 🥵 Unfortunately Kasera has to return to the US, and even though they want to be together, they realise that their lives are just to different.
Fast forward 10 YEARS 😳
Kasera has been searching for Vadim for the entire time, and now has a 10 year old daughter Nadia, who is a product of their time in the forest together. She’s starting to lose hope of ever seeing him again, until she sees him in a club that her best friend is playing a gig at, and she approaches him, expecting him to be thrilled to see her, but what she gets is a complete shock to her system. He’s cold and uncaring, and tells her that he wants nothing to do with her, or his child (who he already knew about 😳) but due to Kaseras friend mouthing off about him being an awful and man and father, other Mafia members know that he’s connected to her, and now she is at risk, as is Nadia.
Kasera and Nadia have to go on the run, and travel to their secure cottage in the woods outside of New York, and as soon as Vadim realises, he follows them there to make sure they’re safe. Unfortunately they’re not as safe as they first thought and the Italian and Russian mafia both send men to attack them.
During this ordeal, both Kasera and Vadim realise just how much they both love each other and will do anything to be together, but life is not that easy and there are a lot more twists and turns in this story.
I loved everything about this book, the intensity, the romance, the suspense and the strength of character of them all is incredible and I would recommend this book to anyone who loves dark romance and mafia romance
I was one of the lucky ones who received an ARC copy of this book, Brutal Secrets by Raven Carlyle. I had been looking forward to reading this for quite a while counting down the days leading up to the ARC release date, now I am counting down the days until the release date to the public (13 days). I can’t wait for the world to experience the debate book of Raven Carlyle.
The beginning of this book did have a slower pace, but the author did not fail to suck me into this sexy and dangerous tale. I was constantly on edge wondering what was going to happen next and what the main characters (mainly Vadim) would choose to do. I was rooting for their love and they’re happily ever after.
I am fairly new to reading mafia romance, but it felt very unique to have a story where the MMC was reluctant to be with the FMC due to his line of work. Which is a very honest and responsible response on his part. While in other mafia romances I have read in the past, the FMC basically just joins the mafia along side the MMC. It was refreshing for me to see a new perspective of the popular genre.
While reading you can see the care the author put into crafting the story; the characters were well developed and interesting (I can’t wait to learn more about Sasha), at times you could really feel the atmosphere whether they were in the city or in the snowy woods of Russia, and the plot was compelling and believable with a twist I wasn’t expecting at the end.
I will admit, when I saw that there was a child in the story I grew a little concerned. The only reason being that I don’t usually read romance books with children involved (not because I am against it, I just haven’t found one that has peaked my interest). But I was pleasantly surprised and it only added to the story. It gave a very heartwarming touch that you wouldn’t experience without.
As for the spice… there was the PERFECT amount. Not too much to where there is no plot and not too little to leave you wanting more.
If you haven’t guessed from the above text, ADD THIS TO YOUR TBR.
This book is absolutely disaster of mass proportions. If there was a zero I would use it.
Mafia with a pop star no connection, no real mafia daughter playing at hiding for mafia dad to come home which he never was around blah, blah blah. This is like reading a diary of a teen who failed first grade and second grade and then attempted to write a book at 15..
Just how much darker can it get before the sun comes out again?
This mafia romance is everything I love in the genre. A tough as nails take no prisoner mafia boss and a story as dark as he is. Kesera meet vadim in Moscow after he rescues her from her sleezy manager and things progress from there. She’s sweet and delicate and he’s rough and not a good man but something draws the two of them to each other for a passion filled two days before reality smacks them in the face and the part knowing that they will never see each other again and will never have another day like they did.
Now it’s ten years later and they run into each other by accident causing her life to spiral out of her control once again. Because the man she thought she had something special with the man she thought she loved is cold and hard and even more dark then before. Except now she has their daughter to think about and keep safe.
I love that this novel has so many different things at play. Some of the are triggers but it shows how so many women have dealt with sleezy men in the music and movie industry who take advantage of young women. Kesera is a strong woman who despite feeling unloved and broken holds her head up high and raises her and vadim’s daughter alone for 10 years longing for the man who she fell for in the snow covered Moscow woods. Vadim is a ruthless mafia man who despite never forgetting their time together stays away from Kesera hoping to keep her and their daughter off of the Night Governor radar. There are some triggers so please if you are easily triggered make sure and read those warnings because no book is worth your mental health.
That being said I give this book 1000/5 stars for the story, HEA, and the spice!
I received this as an ARC for a fair and honest review.
The first half of this book was a tough read for me. It was pretty slowly paced and I struggled. But the second half of the book had me hooked and I couldn't put it down.
While it was slowly built up, it did a great job building the world up. Overall it was a good book and I'm looking forward to reading more books in this series.
If you like your books fast paced, this may not be the book for you but I'd say you should give it a try anyway because you may still like it. 😉
Brutal Secrets is a standalone in the world of The Night Governor Bratva Books by Raven Carlyle.
🖤 Second Chance Romance 🖤 MMC Mafia Alphahole 🖤 FMC Budding Starlet 🖤 Stolen Time 🖤 Dacha in the woods (iykyk) 🏡 🖤 Dangerous Liaisons 🖤 Dual POV 🖤 Spicy shenanigans 🥵🔥
I found this author on Booktok and I'm so very thankful I did. What a rollercoaster of emotions this journey was.
Vadim, a foot soldier in the Russian Mafia, and Kesera, a budding star, singing in a club in Moscow that she's been flown over to by her slimy boss, cross paths when Vadim saves her from a dangerous situation.
Drawn to each other, they steal some time together until reality kicks back in, in the form of Vadims best friend Sasha, forcing him back to real life.
The story picks up 10 years later, with Kesera, back in America, successful in her career, but having never moved on completely from Vadim, when she stumbles upon him. Vadim faced with the Zolotaya he knew he couldn't keep safe in the lifestyle he chose to live in, now faces some tough decisions. The main one being Kesera, who is no longer shy and meek. She's now a worthy component against his years of self sabotage.
If you love your morally grey men dished up protective and your FMC badass and strong, the plot full of suspense, intrigue, angst and red hot chemistry and spicy scenes, then sink yourself between the burning pages of this book 👌🖤🥀🔥🥵🫶
The price of being án international singer in á gold glass bead dress: creep manager named Jimmy raking in the dough as he rapes. There’s not too much said about how she got into this though. Seems she just decided it was worth it for fame, which is shallow. To be popular, obviously she’d have to strip down her “artistry” to dance hits but bluesy 60s stuff she wants to make only comes up once and sounds vague and unappealing. We slowly get her backstory, but Vidam’s sounds more like what you’d expect hers to be if she was trafficked versus transactional: orphanage, life of crime.
The other POV is á Moscow gangster with “granite in his tone,” who barges in on such. Little too white knight and touchy feely for the “songbird” off the bat but I guess insta-love is the trend. Before the sex, the roles are a little reversed: all she seems to think about is carnal even though she was assaulted twice minutes ago, and not even in á coping hyper-sexualized way, while he is the darkly poetic Russian romantic showing her about Moscow. It’s strange how they go from hot and heavy to pulling back, doing normal things immediately, á little too janky like a Sim on command acts.
Descriptions and imagery are beautiful as á cracked snow globe—the girl is just not my taste. I can’t imagine án attractive female Southern accent since that’s where I live and unless it’s blatant, maybe I don’t pick up on subtler nice ones. They should’ve spent more than á day together not just in general but because the story feels too uneven in most of it being about the present, ten years later. “Intimacy lost like footprint under snow,” is á good line.
I just give up after halfway though because it becomes too cliche about SA star legal battles and nonsense arguments about the press blatantly taking the man’s side when that hardly happens IRL these days. I’m not saying never or the men don’t win legally, but that’s the nature of a hard to prove crime and her never fighting him off or running away, despite mafia help she could hit up, caring more about a shallow job she doesn’t show actual passion for or a random affair than, say, her life or daughter. She is a damsel in distress trope in the worst way: Rich girl with huge platform and little creativity continually going into rooms with some low level schlub when she should be surrounded by a team or lift á finger to do anything different. It just comes off like reading a rape fetish versus a survivor story.
I’m sick of the dated frat boy tropes too, when especially with real celebrities, it’s the geeky theater effeminate types always in trouble for assault. It’s not those who look or act like athletes in most of the entertainment biz here. Or if we’re to take this to mirror a Kesha case, it doesn’t work here because the producer is written as a dumpy white fat blue collar type the media would easily lampoon anyway but somehow doesn’t. We’re not given enough of his credentials. He sounds too dopey to have actual connections besides low middleman.
Or the singer should be presented as more of a party girl materialistic slut to make people question her more. Yet she sounds like she’s perceived as a Taylor Swift type (her perverted mind not known about at all), thus the public would think she’s more asexually innocent. Looks matter most in all these public trial matters so it’s illogical here also without set up of, say, the producer’s previous philanthropic MeToo wolf in sheep’s clothing cover ups. Just lazy writing there.
I would read more by this author but hope they would focus more on prose and romance that has time to bloom and doesn’t cover so many heavy topics they’re not experienced enough to yet. I mean, once the Italian mob and secret daughters got involved too, I was just like get me out of this soap opera web. I came for the Moscow snow coziness and Russian prose, more spilled blood or shell casings than trite mind games.
I really enjoyed this book. It wasn't something I expected, but I loved it. It was so easy to read and follow; it was very much a page turner.
Kesera is a US singer who is performing in Russia. There, she meets Vadim after he saves her from her manager. From the first moment they meet, Vadim becomes very protective over Kesera. He is very attentive and caring, even when people around him couldn't understand why. There was this pull between them that they couldn't deny, and they ended up spending the weekend together in a dacha. Kesera hopes for more, while Vadim knows this is all there will be.
Ten years later, after giving up on finding him, Kesera bumps into the one who has her heart. But their possible second chance comes with a lot of questions. They are both living completely different lives. How can they be together when they both have so much to lose? What secrets are they keeping from each other?
I loved the story between Vadim and Kesera. From the moment they met, I knew that they were meant to be. They were so soft and sweet together. Vadim has this protective and domineering side to him when it comes to Kesera and his family. It was clear he cared for and loved his family, but there was an internal battle waging within him over what he desperately wanted and what he felt was right. Above everything, he wanted to protect Kesera, and if that meant he would sacrifice himself, then so be it.
When we met Kesera, she was very shy and timid, but after she bumps into Vadim and the weekend they spent together, she starts to come out of her shell, and ten years later, she is confident and comfortable in her own skin. She is a strong and independent businesswoman, and I loved that for her. I was rooting for her every step of the way. I really wanted what was best for her and to see her happy.
I loved the side characters as well. They added to the story with their own unique personalities. I especially enjoyed Sasha's character, and I can't wait to read his story because I know he is gonna struggle, and I will love every minute of it.
The only wish I have is that there was a bit more romance between Kesera and Vadim. I could feel their chemistry and bond, but I felt like they didn't spend enough time together for their love to blossom, but that's just my opinion.
Overall, I really enjoyed this story, and I can't wait for the next book.
Thank you to Grey's Promotion and Ravne Carlyle for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I love the dedication. I think it's one of the most beautiful dedications I've ever seen. And the playlist is incredible as well.
This book is nothing like anything I've ever read so far. I have read mafia romance before, just to clarify, but this is different. Raven Carlyle style of writing makes it different. I think I'd go as far as to say original even. The MMC is a part of a mafia but he's not the boss. Kesera is a beautiful, younger singer but from what I understood she's not "stereotypically" beautiful. She's small, has a husky voice and so. Other than being a top 10 singer, she's a regular person. I really liked the way Vadim and Kesera met. Him being practically enchanted by her singing. It was a bit surprising but also in a way natural and nice how safe and comfortable she felt with him right away. But the story doesn't focus on their big unconditional love at first sight. They have one memorable night together that is followed by years of heartbreak. I think that's partially what's so original for me.
*Spoilers ahead* I have to admit I hated Vadim for most of the book. I couldn't understand how could he know that he has a child and not try to be in her life. And the way he talked to Kesers after they finally met 10 years later? I wanted to punch him in the face for that. But the closer we got to the ending, the less angry I was and the more I understood where's he coming from. He loved Kesera but he was trying to protect her and the baby the best he knew how. Even if I wish he'd contact her sooner, let her how it's too dangerous for them to be together instead of hiding for a decade, I believe he was trying to do the right thing. I'm glad they got their happy ending. I can imagine how excited Nadia was when she found out she'll have a sibling. She's such a sweet kid. I loved that about this book too. Even though Kesera is a big star and a single mother, she's there for Nadia, she takes care of her and she makes sure she's happy and well but not spoiled. That she's a good kid.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I'm thankful for the happy ending that we got. I can't wait to read Sasha's story as soon as it's out.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.
Buckle up!! You are about to go through every emotion known to man. This is the story of Vadim and Sera. He is in the Russian Mafia. He is also super protective and has a mouth on him. Sera knows that she wants to be with Vadim, but his job and her immaturity at first really made me wish that the girl would grow up. However, she does and turns into this super strong takes not crap woman that you're going to love. I will admit that the first of this book is a little slow. It took me quite a while to get into this book. These two meet when she is a singer at an event for the Russian elite. The girl has a horrible manager and the guy is a total creep. while he is trying to assault her Vadim steps in to save the day. He is working security at the event. However the moment she opens her mouth to sing he is a goner for her. Now that he has rescued her he sweeps away to a mafia cottage where she will be kept safe. But, she has to return to the US and we fast forward ten years. She is searching for him the entire time because she has someone that he needs to meet. However, she is beginning to feel that all hope is lost of ever being able to find him. However she has a new gig and he just so happens to be there. I have to stop talking about this book or I am going to give something away. It did take me a while like I was saying to get into this book. If you love a slow burn or a book to read then you will probably like this on a lot.
Brutal Secrets is an emotional roller coaster filled with drama, spice and all the Daddy vibes. For all the mafia lovers out there, this will be right up your alley. The storyline moves a little slow at first, but as the plot develops, the pace does pick up.
Kasera is a singer, living a normal-ish life, trying to get through to the next day without being seen. After a set one night, her skeezy manager makes a move on her and doesn’t take no for an answer. Enter in Vadim.
Vadim works for the Russian Mafia as hired muscle, on the night of a special event, he is starstruck by the voice of an angel. It does something to his soul that he has never experienced before, and he wants to hear more of it. While he is out on his run of the property, he sees the owner of the voice (Sera) being harassed, and does what he does best. Protect. He whisks her away to safety where they spend the weekend together.
Alas, a good book always has a twist. Sera had to return to the states and now ten years later she is searching for Vadim again with their ten year old daughter in tow. A whole lot of crazy happiness when Sera does finally find, he is not the same man she fell in love with all those years ago.
Honestly this book was a little difficult to follow at first, it moved a little slowly to start, but once it does finally get going, boy oh boy does it go. Brutal Secrets is an intense, romantic suspense, mafia trope that is sure to keep its readers engaged and entertained.
Brutal Secrets is the 1st Book of The Night Governor Bratva. This is Vadim and Kesera's story. Kesera is a singer who traveled to Moscow for her performance. She meets Vadim when he rescues her from Jimmy Ullrich her manager. Kesera is a shy young woman and Vadim is a rough and tough guy. Vadim takes Kesera to a Russian home in the country, where she will be safe and they spend time together. Then it's time for her to return to the U.S. 10 Years Later - Vadim and Kesera have both changed. Vadim is a dangerous, hard mafia man. The man Kesera thought that she had something exceptional with is totally different. Vadim hasn't forgotten their time together and the daughter they share, but he needs to stay away for their protection. This is a steamy dark read with secrets and danger.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
A young, American singer. A sleazy, abusive manager. The Russian Mafia. The Italian Mafia. Moscow. New York. A child.
Kesera is alone, travelling with her manager around the world to perform her chart-topping songs. While in Moscow, she performs in a Russian Mafia club and after the show, her manager tries to sexually assault her.
Her struggle is heard by Vadim, a Russian Mafia member, who was captivated by her while she was on stage. He opens the door to find her in a compromising position and comes to her aid.
They share a powerful connection and spend the next two days together at a dacha out in the Russian wilderness.
Skip ahead ten years after Vadim returns her to the airport and they say goodbye. We witness the moment they meet once more, and it's nothing like Kesera ever imagined. She's been searching for him for so long and to tell him he is a father. She had finally given up when he's suddenly there in front of her, yet any warmth he had for her before was gone now.
What happens when she finds out the truth? You'll have to grab the book to find out.
I did enjoy this book and was thrilled to see a story where the Mafia MMC is not a possessive alpha who won't let the FMC be free.
Give me all the Vadim you've got!! Finished this book in a day and it's not often that I say I wish a book was longer, but that is indeed the case here. Written in what I feel is three acts, the writer gives each phase of the evolution of Vadim and Kesera's lives and relationship its own vibe and it's palpable. Most of the mafia romance I've read leaves out the emotional/romance parts until later. That's not the case here- but that's also a big part of the setup that will break you later on. There's a lot going on in the story lines of all of the characters but Carlyle does a great job of bringing most of those to completion. This is the first in a series so I'm betting some things are left for the next book(s). Seriously though- she could've just kept writing this one and I would've hung on every word. There is just enough love, angst, and spice to keep you heavily invested without veering too far into things like miscommunication- a trope that drives me nuts. Honestly, this was time well spent with a book for me. And as an odd aside- if you've been listening to TTPD on repeat like me, the song Peter goes perfectly with chapter 40.
This book has everything - a young, American singer. A sleazy, abusive manager who wants more, Russian Mafia, a child - all set against the fabulous backdrops of Moscow and New York.
Kesera is a young up-and-coming singer. who was booked for a personal show in Moscow. After her show, her manager Jimmy wants more than just money from her. That’s when He steps in.
Vadim is dangerous and mysterious but completely at the mercy of his attraction to Kesera. He comes to her aid and they spend the next 48 hrs in the Russian wilderness.
10 years later and they reconnect with Vadim finding out he is a father. The secrets that come out and the drama of the 2 worlds colliding create a great second part to the story and the action a cheat ramps up from there. Kesera grows into such a strong woman and she stands up for herself. Vadim is very much a guy hero but still he is not overbearing and take total control like many “mafia” MMC
The first part of the book was a little slow but it did provide great supporting stories to the characters. The story from when they re-connected onwards I really enjoyed.
I received this as an ARC but I would happily read more in this series.
I do not often dive into Mafia Romance, so when I got the chance to read this book, I was surprised that it had a completely different take on mafia romance. The story focuses on Vadim (MMC), a member of the Brava, Russian Mafia, and his chance meeting with pop star Kesera (FMC), singing in a Russian Nightclub. I do not want to spoil it, but they do end up leaving the club together. Then, after their initial meeting, the story jumps ten years when they happen to run into each other again. To me, the author focuses more on his committed 'family' to the Bratva and her family. This is not focused on Bratva and the lifestyle like a lot of mafia romances do. This book shows how each character struggles with the life they have, the life they want, and the obstacles of trying to find balance. It is told from a dual perspective, and the author's writing style is smooth and easy to read. Her ability to describe surroundings, people, and emotions makes you feel like you are with the characters. I would definitely recommend this book.
Wow! This is an intense, steamy, action-packed read that I didn't want to put down. I've been sticking to authors I know lately because I've been in a reading slump, but when I read this blurb I had to take the risk. I'm so glad I did. I loved Vadim and Kesera! I also now love Raven Carlyle and I can't wait to dive into more of her work.
Vadim is dangerous, secretive, and declares that he isn't a hero even when he saves Kesera. Kesera is a songbird with a creepy manager who desperately needs a hero, at least in the beginning. As the story progresses her strength grows, and when she runs into Vadim 10 years after their first meeting she isn't that same girl. Vadim isn't that same man, either. He's harder and more dangerous.
These two have off the charts chemistry. Their relationship is full of ups and downs that take the reader on an emotional rollercoaster and kept me glued to the pages. There are secrets, betrayals, lies, and dangerous people around every corner - basically everything I look for in a Mafia romance. It's dark, steamy, and I need more.
Raven Carlyle is a new to me author and I was very fortunate to get an ARC of her new series, The Night Governor Bravta. Brutal Secrets is the first book in the series. I was a little bit apprehensive to take on this ARC as I am very monogamous to the authors that I read and it takes me a while to warm up to a new author. So when I jumped into this book, I was prepared not to be impressed….I am so glad I was wrong!! OMG!! This book is so good, I could not put it down. The characters Vadim and Kesera are well written, well thought out. The story, wow, it is so good, the twists and turns, it is perfection. I had all the feels, I was so angry at Vadim, I wanted to hate him so much, but I just couldn’t, even the character Sasha, he is a giant alpha-hole, grew on me. I felt the characters’ pain, and I want to cry with them, and laugh with them, and Nadia, she is so awesome!!! This is definitely on my re-read list!!!
O my sweetness, I never needed a Russian man in my life more than reading about Vadim. There was just something about him that made my heart beat faster. I’m an avid mafia romance reader and I loved every single thing about this book. Kesera was such a wonderful FMC. Strong and resilient but also a hopeless romantic. I have so much respect for how she handled everything that life threw at her.
And Vadim… VADIM… It was cruel how they couldn’t be together even though they’re obviously the best thing that ever happened to each other. How he did his best to resist and protect her but eventually caved.
And then there was Nadia. She truly made the best side character in this book haha. The text messages between her and Vadim made me laugh so hard!

I really enjoyed this book. I really enjoyed learning some of Vadim and Sasha backstory and how they stuck together growing up. I thought Vadim was going to be a nice guy but when the book kept going and his actions towards Kesera made me dislike him. But, by the end of the book after finding out why he did what he did I liked his character again. I'm glad Jimmy was held accountable for all of his actions towards his talent. I'm so glad that Keseras career grew when she came back to the states. I felt bad for Kesera searching for Vadim and when she finally finds him hes a jerk. I really enjoyed the relationship between Vadim and Nadia. It was really funny when Nadia was texting Vadim all the time. It was funny when Sasha was trying to talk Vadim out of getting married. I was rooting for Kesera and Vadim to get back together and have their happily ever after. I really enjoyed the ending.
Brutal secrets has very slow start, so slow I was close to a DNF but then it took off and rocketed. The background takes you back to when Vadim and Kesera first met back stage, when Keresa's manager is harrassing her to have sex with him. That night a somewhat naive Keresa learn't not just a valuable life lesson but falls pregnant, courtesy of the electric chemistry she has with Vadam. However, despite their connection Vadam walks away - being in love with someone puts them in danger when you are part of a mafia family.
10 years on Kesera has grown in more ways than one. She is bringing up their daughter without Vadam, she's looked for him, she wanted to tell him about his daughter, she finally finds him. That electric chemistry is still very much there just waiting to catch fire. This is where this book really off and you jump onto a huge rollercoaster, on which at times you feel a bit like your hanging on for dear life.

Kesera and Vadim lead us in this interesting read. She is a young pop singer trying to make it. Her manager is a creep and she is struggling. Vadim is muscle for the Russian mob. He comes to her rescue during a run in with her manager. One special ends in heartbreak.
Ten years later, they cross paths again. Circumstances have changed and they are now different people. Sera a bit stronger now and has a child to take care of. Vadim is even more dangerous. He has many secrets that could cause injury or death to Kesera and little Nadia. The story does deal with danger but it does a great job showcasing the relationship and growth between the characters. Very well executed and a good story. The side characters are very interesting and will make you want to read about them in future books.
