CALM BEFORE THE STORM

After two lifetimes of misunderstandings, Mo Ran and Chu Wanning have at last opened their hearts to one another. Yet the pair must put aside the bloom of new love all too soon. When a crucial clue about Xu Shuanglin’s whereabouts comes to light, the foremost powers of the cultivation realm set out to confront him. This volume served as the calm before the storm, a quiet pause before the inevitable upheaval. I truly appreciated seeing the established relationship between Chu Wanning and Mo Ran, as well as all their lovely moments; it was heartwarming to see how seamlessly they complemented each other and how well they worked as a team. The title of this danmei perfectly captures the essence of the couple, beautifully conveying their character.

The plot itself was more about setting the stage and tying together various side plots, preparing for their eventual convergence into the main storyline. I especially enjoyed that we got more glimpses into the first timeline and how the relationship between Chu Wanning and Mo Ran was in that earlier existence. Slowly, everything is starting to come together, but I have to admit, I'm already feeling a bit apprehensive about the emotional turmoil and angst that I sense is on the horizon.

I also really like how much development Mo Ran gets, especially in this volume. He is gradually coming to the realization that his past sins are not going to let him go easily. This understanding is slowly but surely eroding his mental state, burdened as he is by guilt. Meanwhile, Chu Wanning, despite having a typically thin face, begins to reveal more of his feelings as the volume progresses. He even takes the initiative, showing a deeper layer of himself.

Xue Meng remains my favorite character—I adore him for his personality and presence in this story.

In conclusion, I am getting ready to dive into the seventh volume, knowing that the emotional pain and angst are bound to crush me.

"I love you."

I really, really, really love you so much. With reckless ambition, with boundless contrition; bearing the weight of my guilt and sins, yet unwilling to give up; selfishly, desperately, ardently, hungrily—I love you.

IT’S SO… FLUFFY?? As my preread status update indicated, I was extremely nervous going into this volume (though tbf I am always nervous going into a new Erha volume), thinking it was going to break my heart, but I was surprised to see the opposite. This volume was actually so fluffy? And cute? And sweet? I mean, don’t get me wrong, there were some heartbreaking scenes (because it’s Erha, what else would one expect) but overall, there were some good vibes.

"Shizun... Wanning..." Mo Ran chanted his name—tenderly, ardently, madly, ruefully. For him, the tiniest scrap of love from Chu Wanning was the world's most potent aphrodisiac.

Since Mo Ran and Chu Wanning have confessed, they’re doing surprisingly well. Even though there’s still Chu Wanning’s insecurities, Mo Ran’s past life blues, and the plot happening, this book was a nice reprieve for them. In which I mean, smut, so much smut. On the one hand, Mo Ran and Chu Wanning figure out the whereabouts of Xu Shuanglin, and on the other they get to explore each other’s bodies teehee.

Gahhh! They’re too cute for words. Their secret little tryst has me smiling and giggling. They are both really toeing the line of how much/where they could fool around (Mo Ran’s toeing the line. Chu Wanning is the exasperated indulging passenger) before they’re caught. And poor Xue Meng. That boy is just on the cusp of putting two and two together on the RanWan front, but his innocent, naive, trusting mind seems to need a little more of a push.

As he folded Chu Wanning into his arms and kissed him, Mo Ran took Chu Wanning's hand and pressed it to his own throbbing chest. "Remember this place," he said.

Chu Wanning blinked at him, uncomprehending.

"If there comes a day when my sins can no longer be pardoned,” Mo Ran mumbled, brushing his nose against Chu Wanning’s. "Then kill me. Right here."

A shudder ran through Chu Wanning. He stared at Mo Ran in disbelief. "What are you saying?"

Mo Ran's face broke into a smile—one that held both Mo-zongshi's gallant sincerity and Taxian-jun's wicked madness. "My spiritual core was formed because of you, and my heart is yours too. If a day comes when I must die, they should both belong to you. Only then can I..."

Long quote. Sorry. But it broke my heart so I must. Aside from the sweet, fluffy goodness and the hardcore smut, the plot does threaten to ruin these good vibes (but I look forward to it mwahahaha). Because of Xu Shuanglin and someone—who Mo Ran has deduced must be reborn like him (Who is it??? I’m on the edge of my seat!)—behind the scenes, the inevitable reveal of Mo Ran’s rebirth is on the horizon. And I for one am an anxious mess. How will people react? Xue Meng, Xue Zhengyong, and especially Chu Wanning?! Moreover, Chu Wanning’s reaction especially will be interesting, considering that he’s been having dreams of their first life and is aware of the cruel nature of Taxian-jun, but he just chalks it up to his own imagination. The anticipation is killing me.

Speaking of first lives, that flashback scene of Mo Ran 1.0 putting his initial plans into action with the Zhenlong Chess Formation was heartbreaking. Like ugh. With the new understanding of their stupid misunderstandings, to see Chu Wanning just take Mo Ran’s cruel words and taunts, knowing himself that it’s false, makes me emotional. I want to give Chu Wanning 1.0 a big hug and kiss on the forehead and sing him a lullaby while I rock him to sleep. He makes my protective instincts flare up. My poor baby.

Everyone had thought he was crying for his shizun. Only Xue Meng knew that when he lay in his sickbed that night, clutching Longcheng and gazing into the darkness, he’d rasped: “Ge, I’m sorry.”

XUE MENG CALLED MO RAN GE!! HE CALLED HIM GE 😭😭😭😭 Don’t mind me, I’m an emotional weepy mess. This volume had some really good brother moments between these two. Like *sobs* they have come so far. The development of their relationship since the first life, since volume 1, and now is so beautiful. They really do care about each other.

Bamboo leaves swirled over Naihe Bridge. Her robes rippled in the wind as she held the jade pendant warm in her hand, its scarlet tassel fluttering between her fingers. Finally—tentative, wary, and whisper-soft—she ventured, "A-Si?"

Perhaps it was his imagination. In that moment, her voice, irrevocably distorted by the voice-changing spell, seemed to carry a note of its old tenderness as it floated over the breeze.

Damnit. Why must I get attached to side couples? Nangong Si and Ye Wangxi love each other so much. But these poor babies are being put through the wringer. Ugh and now poor Nangong Si is being abused and ridiculed and stomped on by the cultivation world because of his bastard dad. And Ye Wangxi is being abused and ridiculed and dismissed because of her bastard dad AND her gender. And all I want for these two is to be happy and in love together. And I have a bad feeling that they won’t get that by the end of this series. (Also Chu Wanning acknowledged Nangong Si as his disciple *SOBS* Chu Wanning cares about his children so much)

Mo Ran's hand stroked his hair. "Wanning.." he murmured, voice a whisper. "I love you... It's only ever been you."

No one in the world could be better than you. No one but you will ever stir my heart.

Shizun. I love you. I love you.

Should’ve taken a shot every time Mo Ran says out loud or monologues I love you, Shizun because he was whipped.

But ooooh. Seven Seas Edition volume wise, we are over the halfway point (I believe Erha will be an 11 volume work, my bank account is crying can you hear it?) and questions questions questions. Who is the other reborn person? How are they so intimately aware of Taxian-jun’s Shared-Heart Array? Are they now aware that Mo Ran is also reborn? Shi Mei, why you so sus? Seriously Shi Mei tell me what you know. I don’t trust you. Just know that I am eagerly awaiting the next volume.

☆☆☆

This is the volume I've been waiting for! 😭 After five volumes of anger, frustration, heartache, and mutual pining I finally - FINALLY - get to see Mo Ran and Chu Wanning together. At times, I didn't think I'd make it (because, y'all, the slow burn was real), but the wait was worth it. The way these two couldn't stay away from each other gave me life. 🥰 I'm anxious to see what volume 7 is going to throw at them. Chu Wanning still doesn't know about Mo Ran's past life, and Mo Ran is convinced that he'll be so outraged that he ends up abandoning him. I can't wait for Chu Wanning to prove him wrong. 😏 5 stars

Vol. 1: 4 stars 😥 - Great first volume.
Vol. 2: 2.5 stars 😐 - Not a fan of the de-aging trope, unfortunately
Vol. 3: 5 stars 💔😭😭 -MY HEART!!
Vol. 4: 3.5 stars 💘 - Chu Wanning's reaction to "an absolute unit" 🤣🤣🤣
Vol. 5: 4.25 stars 😲😱🍿
Vol. 6: 5 stars 🥹😳🥵 - "My dear shizun, next time, could I make you come on my cock?" 🤚🤚🤚🫠💀

The relationship between Mo Ran and Chu Wanning has been through many ups and downs in the five previous books, but in volume 6 of “The Husky and his White Cat Shizun” by Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou the pair is given a reprieve. The book is a romantic interlude filled with both sugar and spice in equal measure.

The plot in this volume is dominated by the development of their relationship on both an emotional and physical level. The last volume ended with a confession; Mo Ran finds the courage to tell Chu Wanning that he has feelings for him. So, in this volume they explore these feelings and where they can take them. Mo Ran is clearly the more experienced lover in his ability to use words and in his skill in the romance department. Chu Wanning is a stubborn but fast learner and so they inch forward for each time they meet up.

There is kissing behind Mengpo Hall after dinner. Then there is a tryst in the forest, where Chu Wanning learns the finer details of ardent kissing technique when they are almost caught by someone looking for his cat. This leads to a night of passion at an inn and then to a make-out session out beneath a waterfall. The novel ends with a bedroom scene with Xue Meng as a hilarious third wheel who simply refuses to leave, completely oblivious to the fact that Mo Ran is hiding beneath the covers of the bed, making it extremely difficult for Chu Wanning to focus.

The romance very much happens on the page if not always in the bedroom and so these explicit scenes spare no one’s blushes. They are, however, embedded in a narrative that has been painstakenly built over the course of the five previous volumes and two different lifetimes and so this is not soulless entertainment written merely to titillate the superficial reader. Each scene adds another layer to their relationship. Even so, their romance is shown in detail and so some readers may prefer to look away.

Essentially, Mo Ran wants to recreate his relationship with Chu Wanning in this lifetime without cruelty and selfishness. In his previous life he took what he wanted and disregarded the cost of his behaviour. In this life, Mo Ran shows restraint, because he has realized that the forced gratification of his lust in his first lifetime ultimately felt empty and so he is trying to build a proper, reciprocal relationship with Chu Wanning in this one.

Chu Wanning is the older man but also the more inexperienced lover. He is experiencing these emotions and physical romance for the first time and Mo Ran takes it slow. He restrains himself in order to keep his beloved safe and he is rewarded with love that is freely given. Mo Ran is inventive in his romantic skills and so they do manage to get quite far without ever making it all the way in this volume. This point is significant, because it shows how much Mo Ran has come to regret his behaviour in their previous lives. This time round, the relationship is mutually consensual all the time and feelings are declared. Mo Ran clearly states, “Wanning… I love you… It’s only ever been you” (chapter 209, p. 368) so that the other man can be in no doubt about his feelings.

Beneath the awkward exploration of their new relationship there is a joyous enjoyment in the luxurious sensation of being loved by someone who loves you back. Mo Ran is, however, conflicted because he senses that he should come clean about his previous life but dreads what might happen if his sins of the past are revealed. The book ends with the threat of an unseen villain who seems to have been reborn, just like Mo Ran, and who seems set on using dark cultivation techniques to destroy the world. The conflict for Mo Ran is that he knows the dark techniques but can only fight them if he reveals what he knows thus outing himself as a possible threat. The book ends in the bedroom with a declaration of love but it is in a context of impending danger to both the lovers and everyone else.

Chu Wanning is babygirl, confirmed.

Everyone, I think this might be my favorite volume after volume 3, and not because this volume is filthy, but because among the filth, it's filled with so much tender love that I am relegated to a pool of mush... But also increasing angst.

I heard this volume is the calm before the storm, and I completely got that feeling while reading it. I'm so scared for what's to come, because now we're really getting into the thick of it with our Big Bad villain who remains unknown. I AM SCARED !!! We all know the truth has to come out at some point and I am terrified for when that happens. Mo Ran, baby, you def fucked up, but now you're just a dumb puppy and I love you and I don't want you to hurt anymore :(

We get a glimpse of the time period right after Shi Mei's death in Mo Ran's original life when Mo Ran first cultivated the Zhenlong Chess Formation, as well as an additional spell we learn to be the Shared-Heart Array. Reading Mo Ran's dark point of view from this time was genuinely terrifying. We've come to deeply get to know him over the course of 6 novels, from his immediate rebirth to the incredible character-developed man we have now, so going back into that macabre mindset for really the first time was chilling to the bone. My stomach was in knots while reading it. I felt so much pain for him now knowing what we know.

And jeez, what cruel words he'd said to Chu Wanning back then... But it's so interesting to see how Chu Wanning is also not so innocent in the sense that he never spoke up. If he had spoken up even just once, if he'd paid attention just once, it would have been enough to stop Mo Ran. But was it Chu Wanning's duty to do so? He was his shizun, after all. That's such an interesting discussion to ponder over.

Gosh, and then Mo Ran is so stressed about being discovered. What would that mean for everyone? For Chu Wanning? It's unthinkable. Mo Ran is finally letting this thought settle and it terrifies him to the core. He's pacing, anxious, horrified at the possibility. And guilty, enough to head to Chu Wanning's room to confess. Better the truth come from him than Xu Shuanglin and Friends, right?

Ughhh, just stab me, it would hurt less! Mo Ran breaking down and sobbing in front of Chu Wanning.... cut the cameras. Enough !!! When Chu Wanning, on his own accord, immediately hugged him, immediately wiped his tears and kissed him... bro. BROOOOOO. And Chu Wanning instantly understood, instantly told him that he didn't need to say anything if it was too painful... my, my, how far we've come. I am so warm but also in so much pain!!!

2HA is just so fun... so fun...

No but really, that scene was beautiful.

But Mo Ran hiding under the covers when Xue Meng comes in and secretly sucking Chu Wanning off?!??! HELLO?!?!?!? Crying. Mo Ran, you fucking menace.

On another note, I really value Mo Ran and Xue Meng's exponential bonding that occurred in this volume. I've been patiently waiting for them to admit their bond and grow a bit closer. I deeply appreciate how Mo Ran also seems to know realize how much he values Xue Meng as well. Xue Meng calling him "Ge" brought tears to my eyes.

Also, fuck Shi Mei. I still don't trust that bitch... He is always suspicious. He hesitates too much in speaking and when he does, he has shadowed eyes that so quickly turn lovely... nope, I don't trust him.

Ugh, I'm all over the place. Mo Ran calling Chu Wanning "Baby" and "Babe"? Get OUT of here. I'm throwing up glitter. Don't even get me started on the "babygirl." I wanna know what the actual Chinese was for that part, but also, I don't really care because I'm taking the translation of babygirl to be literal. Chu Wanning is literally BabyGirl.

Anyways, we got a spoken "I love you" finally, but duh, but it's so much more special considering Mo Ran finally said it only after Chu Wanning very willingly pleasured him. Because CWN was always on the receiving end, whether forcefully or not. But in this life, CWN finally chose to be with MR of his own accord. He wanted to make him feel good. He wanted to love him. And MR realizes that so acutely that he can only feel glad and grateful. He can only profess his love.

Volume 7, I think you're longer in page count, so thank you, but also I'm really scared. I have two theories on who the Big Bad villain is and if I'm wrong, I'll be upset, but also I genuinely have no clue. Somehow I've evaded spoilers for this entire series and I plan to keep it that way.

Now the slow wait until December for the next book...

Around 3.25.

[Update] SO, I've had a couple months to reflect on my time spent with this series, and at the end of the day I think I'm just going to DNF this.
No particularly hard feelings towards this volume, but unfortunately my enjoyment has been steadily going down from the first couple volumes and it's overall not as high as for the other (long) series I have read/am reading. The plot is lackluster and drags a lot, most of the side characters either bore me or are annoying/feel badly written to me, and as much as I enjoyed the main characters (Chu Wanning u are one of my most beloved archetypes i won't forget about u) and the romance for the most part, my attachment is not high enough to keep my interest piqued and ignore the sides I don't particularly like. These people did Not get me thinking about them once the book was closed the way I had hoped. But that's ok ! Sometimes it's just not meant to be.
I know the next volumes are angsty, I felt motivated to read those at first but I don't want to stop at a tragic point in the story and I figured that since my interest has died down either way there wouldn't be much point in starting those as they wouldn't hurt as much (and as good).
It's a shame this one didn't work out but I might give other Meatbun series a try at some point 🙂‍↕️

How to undo me:
I love you. It has always been you.

I am not ready for the calamity that is about to happen in the next volume. This volume has to be the most romantic, heartbreaking, adorable "calm before the storm" ever, and I am NOT READY to leave!

We're happy here, let me live! 😭

I cannot put into words how much I love ranwan and how insane they made me in this volume. I know that this reread will eventually kill me, but for now I will enjoy the calm before the storm.

“Unfortunately, the man by his side was Mo Ran, Mo Weiyu—the one who knew him to his core; who knew how sensitive the mole by his ear was, and how his toes shied from the cold.”

“I really, really, really love you so much. With reckless ambition, with boundless contrition; bearing the weight of my guilt and sins, yet unwilling to give up; selfishly, desperately, ardently, hungrily—I love you.”

“Wanning… I love you… It’s only ever been you.”

PLEASE HAVE MERCY ON MY SOUL I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE!! All I do is cry and wish I had the love that ranwan has. They turn me into a rabid, feral dog who needs to be put down. Ranwan is on my mind 24/7 once again. Please just let them be happy and in love PLEASE! I can’t bear anything else but that.

I nearly went insane along with Mo Ran when Xue Meng accidentally cockblocked him and Chu Wanning for a bit there at the end. Xue Meng, Shizun is busy at the moment. Go think about how that gourd tried to seduce you with your own face (which by the way had me laughing so hard I had to put down the book). Xue Meng was so pretty in that wedding attire.

But now I fear the silly and horny times are over. I couldn’t be more stressed. We won’t have peace for a long, long time now.

Alright, now that I can sit down and type on an actual computer, here we go!

As always, there is just something about this story that really draws me in. I don't know if it's the weaving of the past time line with the alternate/current one, or if it's simply how desperate Mo Ran works to try to better himself from who he was before, all while knowing that there's the potential he can't change as he still is the same person fundamentally. It is never lost on the reader that if it hadn't been for him realizing his love for Chu Wanning, there was always the potential that things could have gone down the same, or a very similar, road. It is only him opening himself up to the idea that there were things going on he couldn't have known about, that changes his trajectory.

That being said, I love how you can clearly see how the climax is building up. I know there's still a few more volumes to go, and yet I still can't help but be excited to see what's going to happen next. How we've now got definite proof regarding some of the things the reader already sort of suspected going on in the background. How some of the characters that (I'll be so honest) I've suspected since volume 1 are sort of starting to show their true selves through the cracks.

You will notice I'm trying very hard to be spoiler free here, I hope you all appreciate my efforts.

Last but not least, (and technically a spoiler in itself but if you look at the cover I think it's pretty obvious) Mo Ran and Chu Wanning are together! It isn't perfect, it can't be perfect with so many things going on that they aren't being honest with each other about, but you never stop knowing how much they love each other. Literally the last line of this volume ensures the reader knows that this love they have will be the thing that ultimately protects them.

As always when it comes to these, this was a very rambly review but I like to think if you come here specifically for my thoughts then you're used to it. This is definitely my favorite volume so far. I'm going to be waiting very impatiently for the next one, but then when am I not with this series?

"I love you... It's only ever been you." No one in the world could be better than you. No one but you will ever stir my heart. Shizun. I love you. I love you.

Warning - some spoilers!

5 stars - Ranwan will always be one of my favourite couples <3. Really nice to re-read the small moments of peace and happiness they get to enjoy before the issues with Xu Shanglin crop up again - thought the scene with the gourd was particularly funny, especially with Mo Ran volunteering to help with the lust gourd only to be shot down because of his previous... promiscuity TvT. Another one (or several) would have to be poor Xue Meng running into the pair on multiple occasions where he probably would have combusted on the spot if he knew what they were doing - St's art for chapter 209 was so good haha. The angst really kicks in again towards the end of this volume, as Mo Ran reflects on his past as Taixian-jun. There were two quotes that I thought really demonstrated Mo Ran's character at this point:

"His sins and regrets were innumerable, but he didn't want to speak of them - he couldn't speak of them. He didn't want to wake up. He wanted to keep dreaming until daybreak came to slit his throat."

I ruined you, Chu Wanning! You comfort your executioner...You comfort the man who stabbed a knife into your heart! Why did you uses your dying breaths to tell me to spare myself? Why didn't you just kill me at the very beginning...

Mo Ran's guilt pervades much of the story, particularly now as he and Chu Wanning are finally together. I think ending this volume on a refocus on Mo Ran's past actions really emphasises nicely what problems Mo Ran and Chu Wanning will have to face in the future (as heartbreaking as they'll be TvT). Loved this quote from Chu Wanning though when Mo Ran tried to tell him what happened in the previous life - something I think Mo Ran really needed to hear while he was doubting himself:

"If it's bothering you and you want to tell me about it, go ahead. I'm listening[...] But if it's too painful to say, you don't have to tell me, and I won't ask further[...] I know you won't do anything like that ever again."

Going to list some other quotes because as always I highlighted far too many on my kindle not to share even if this app won't let me TvT:

- "No one remembered that to raise someone to the heights of worship - demanding he take every step along the path the masses dictated, demanding he live only according to the whims of the people, refusing to let him show the slightest hint of selfish desire - was, at its core, an act of cruelest coercion."

- "When one was in love, the slightest quirk of shared fate was enough to brighten one's heart."

- "What about Shizun?" "He gave me my life."

- "Perhaps love was the harbor that gave him shelter from his pain."

- "My spiritual core was formed because of you, and my heart is yours too. If a day comes when I must die, they should both belong to you."

Excited to read the next volume - despite knowing how heartbreaking it's going to be - as I'll have officially caught up to where I stopped reading the free fan translation. Going to hold out hope that there will be some moments that aren't angst before we reach the final volume (11!) otherwise I think Meatbun will really have ended me TvT. As always I recommend this series greatly but check the trigger warnings beforehand because Meatbun never strays away from including darker themes.

Volume 6 finally brought Mo Ran and Chu Wanning where they’ve been heading all this time: in the bedroom. There was plenty of hot and heavy action, and it was very good, even if Mo Ran managed to keep himself in tight rein and didn’t go all the way. Chu Wanning didn’t immediately turn into a wanton, and even managed to subdue a lust demon even though he wasn’t pure anymore. His forays into seduction were delightful.

The relationship remained slightly uneven outside bedroom. Chu Wanning is the more senior cultivator and Mo Ran’s teacher, and the two never forget that, even though Mo Ran tries his best to seduce his Shizun in compromising places. And Mo Ran is still torn by guilt about what he did in his previous life, and can’t quite be himself with Chu Wanning.

Outside the romance, the hunt for the enemy intensifies. As he reveals more of himself, Mo Ran recognises some of his own dark spells and makes a stunning revelation. Someone else has reincarnated too. But do they know about Mo Ran, and will they come after him specifically, revealing all his horrible deeds to the world. And what will then happen to his relationship with Chu Wanning?

This was an excellent volume, fairly tight and uncomplicated. Much of it was told from Chu Wanning’s point of view, which was a nice change. Knowing there will be several volumes, I didn’t expect a fast solution here, although I can’t see how much longer the author can drag this storyline. There were also scenes of the previous life about Mo Ran’s first steps towards becoming the evil emperor. His treatment of Chu Wanning felt uncomfortably bad, contrasted with their happiness in this lifetime. He almost confesses everything to Chu Wanning too, only to chicken out at the last moment. At this point of the story, I can’t even predict how Chu Wanning will react when he eventually learns the truth—and where his vivid dreams come from.

Just Mo Ran calling Chu Wanning “babe” deserves 5 stars on its own.

I honestly couldn't remember EVERYTHING that happened in this book because for some reason I kept putting off reading it. This particular volume had quite a mix of fluff, romance, action, and of course good 'ol angst. I can already tell this is the final volume that would be like a comforting warm hug to read. The next volumes are going to destroy me with its angst. That's why I kept procrastinating from finishing this volume. I am SCARED for the fun fluffy romantic times to end... BUT the show must go on and I must witness the adventures of Mo Ran and his beloved shizun.

Anyways, I spotted a lot of worrying foreshadowing in this volume and my heart ached at Mo Ran's inner dialogue. I am scared that those stupid annoying canon fodder hypocrites are gonna crucify him and witch hunt him in the future. Ah yes, the cultivation world in this novel PISSES ME OFF more than the cultivation world of MDZS did. I want ALL THOSE STUPID CULTIVATORS TO JUST DIE. They are all so selfish corrupt hypocrites. GEEZ. I can already feel the entire world turning on Mo Ran and having his past sins come back to haunt him. My heart aches for this poor dumb husky. Despite everything, he still deserves a happy life with Wanning. He suffered so much already... most of it because of a stupid miscommunication too... but still, he acknowledges the evil he has done and wishes to atone for his sins. Poor boy... such a tragic character. Whenever he talks about his past sins, it's so beautifully painful. Man, I wish Xue Meng did not interrupt their conversation.., though that scene was HILARIOUS. The part where the narration said: The disciple was at the door had no intentions of leaving, and the disciple in his bed had no plans to stop... BRILLIANT! Comedic gold right there! Hahahaha

Oh also about stupid canon fodders; I was so glad Song Qiutong's ending was just as brutal as the first time. She deserves that. I still haven't forgiven her for torturing Chu Wanning in the first life. Screw her. And it pissed me off how the cultivators treated Nangong Si. He did NOTHING wrong. He shouldn't have to pay for his shitty corrupt dad's sins. Sigh. So much tragedy.

Overall, I enjoyed this book even if it took me months to get through. It wasn't the book's fault. I'm just very scared to continue the story... but now, I must dive into volume 7! Wish me luck!

A really interesting entry for this series. The first half is generally “fluffy” with some cute romance AND some genuinely hot and fully consent-respecting sex scenes, but with an ominous cloud hanging overhead. This consists of the two things that made this pairing questionable in the first place (which are still not 100% resolved), the antagonists being still at large, and a certain character having clocked Mo Ran’s shift of focus from him to Chu Wanning…and not seeming happy about that! That shifts into high gear in the second half, as Mo Ran grapples with the fact that the current antagonist seems to know things that no one in this timeline should.

Warning: While I’m hiding spoilers for THIS volume, if you want none for prior volumes, please pause here and go read them. (But, like, maybe read my review of the first one and/or lists of trigger warnings posted elsewhere to figure out if you want to wade through all that to get to this point) OK? OK.

In the last volume, we finally got to a place where Mo Ran could tell Chu Wanning “I like you” and I was actually happy with that, because Mo Ran has actually developed to a place where he can love someone properly. Moreover, due to some magical shenanigans the age gap has narrowed, which makes me more OK with Chu Wanning tentatively admitting that he feels the same.

So here we get to see what they are actually like as a couple, and I really like Mo Ran’s efforts to make sure his autistic-coded* anxious virgin of a boyfriend feels safe and cared for as well as desired. I mean, it’s the least he can do, considering how he treated Chu Wanning in the last life! We already knew Chu Wanning is caring and self-sacrificing, so it is good to see Mo Ran trying to make sure that latter quality doesn’t go too far. For example: .

*Two moments illustrating this (beyond the usually flat affect, tendency to get absorbed in projects, mentally running through social scripts, and sensory sensitivities we’d already seen) #1: “Then it was time for him to take his leave. These were someone else’s disciples, after all…teaching them in too much detail might offend…Chu Wanning was no longer a…teenager who had just come down from the mountains. He’d finally grasped the intricacies of such social rules.” You mean 13-some years later? I feel you buddy – I’m still having “aha!” moments about stuff like that in my 40s. #2:

One of the things keeping us from enjoying this too much, however, is the reminder that the only reason no one’s quite caught on yet is that no one can imagine the pure and upright Chu Wanning having an affair with his own cultivation pupil. But they WILL find that out at some point and, oof, I definitely can’t say they’d be wrong for judging him really harshly, or even kicking him out of the sect. I mean, only the readers, MR, and CWN know what the dynamic is like, that CWN would never have made the first move – or even the fifteenth, really! But the readers and Mo Ran alone know that MR is actually a decade older than CWN and far more, um, experienced, in positive and negative ways, lets’ say. In fact, Chu Wanning is judging himself, because he’s been having dreamlike images of . And he’s like:

But then things take a turn as the leaders of the cultivation world get called up to answer a clue to the whereabouts of the antagonist of the last book. Mo Ran comes to the stomach-churning conclusion that someone else from his past life has been reborn. Moreover, they may be trying to confirm that he remembers that timeline too. Because ! If he speaks up, he may be able to prevent a slaughter, but at the risk of exposing himself. It is a mark of his character growth that he barely hesitates in telling the others his “theory”. But So, despite all his growth, Mo Ran can’t help but feel that – as the cover design indicates – the specter of Taxian-jun (the monster he turned himself into out of bitterness and ignorance) will haunt him forever.
