BESTIES ON THE BEACHEven though Minami's efforts to evolve her relationship with Yuzu from childhood friends to lovers have yet to bear fruit, she's not giving up just yet! Their planetarium date might have been a bust, but Minami's already planning her next harebrained scheme. Homemade meals, making wishes together, a beach date? Surely there's a way to free her from the dreaded friend zone!
As Minami’s open secret becomes way more open, Yuzu drops a bombshell about her own intentions. Which is obviously not what Minami thinks, but you can’t have a disaster lesbian story without disaster.
Sometimes a silly yuri paradise story is just fine and that is certainly the case with this one, which continues its sugar-coated comedy in a flurry of misunderstanding and wacky goofing around.
It does remind me a lot of There’s No Freaking Way I’ll Be Your Lover! Unless…, minus that series’ very amusing take on the harem genre. The art definitely feels in the same style and it has a very similar sensibility. This one is even less serious, however.
Most of the volume goes immediately off the rails when Kosame spots Yuzu and Minami on their “date” and becomes yet another co-conspirator. This will eventually bring the very quiet Tsubasa into the mix later on because she’s very protective (cough) of Kosame.
Tsubasa’s silent characterization in volume one was one of the best things about the series and, while this time out they give her actual dialogue, she’s still really darn cool. She is definitely the most fun, having a surprisingly neat backstory that really informs her personality.
After we dive a little more into Tsubasa and Kosame’s relationship, we get a little quiet time between Yuzu and Minami, which really drives it home that Minami just needs to be patient. Yuzu’s one sexual awakening from solving all the story’s conflicts, but Minami is not a ‘small details’ sort of person.
No, instead she decides to do her usual beating around the bush, but what she scares out of that conversation convinces her, without any good reason, that Yuzu is crushing on Hinori.
Cue the flailing as Minami attempts to cheer for her friend’s happiness while putting up a brave front that’s clearly all about her being miserable. This leads her to seek solace with Kosame, which then draws Tsubasa into the mess.
I like that they get in, make the joke about the relationship chart, then clear it up again. This does not need to drag that nonsense out that long, it already has nonsense to drag out for a while, and it’s obvious that Yuzu’s declaration doesn’t mean anything close to what Minami’s thinking.
And, in case you forgot this was a manga, the last third of the book is about a trip to the beach, because no manga can resist the lure of a bikini if it can fit it into the narrative. This one isn’t so much ‘fit in’ as it is ‘celebrated’ and you can tell the mangaka is sure enjoying themselves.
It makes for an appropriate little summer frolic to end things on, with various amusing turns and one of the things that I enjoy most with manga beach visits - swimsuits that subtly reflect the personality of the wearer.
Yeah, this is a very low-stakes yuri, minus those moments where Minami gets herself in over her head. Yuzu is a great match for her and I like that they still address her social anxiety - she is less than interested in the beach, but is determined to push herself outside her comfort zone.
It doesn’t hurt that she also clobbers poor Minami with feels all the time either. She nearly kills her at the end of the final chapter, and she’s practically scandalous (without trying, which is somehow worse) when the two of them are shopping.
The secret strength here is the extra effort with all the characters and the sheer abundance of them. This would not be as fun if Yuzu and Minami were left to their own devices, but the others hanging around gives it a very welcoming feel. Its hangout game is on point.
4 stars - if you liked volume one, this is a solid continuation that builds on its strengths. I think I was a bit generous with rating the first volume, but this is some grade-A fluff and no mistake.
The artwork is nice and it’s interesting to see how when childhood friends become lovers and how you have to try to confess your family especially if that person in the same gender as you are and how I can complicate things
What a wild rollercoaster of emotions from Minami …
The first half was her on the bink of death, thinking Yuzu fell in love with someone else.
But then Tsubasa unintentionally helps her out – which was REALLY needed – and cured her a bit from the extreme blushing! At least, in the 2nd half, she was finally able to talk to Yuzu normally again, without stuttering and blushing too much.
Although the amount of misunderstanding were quite annoying! Literally just wanted to throw her into a therapy session with Elliot from Pandora Hearts …!
Ended on a fun note though, so I'm rating it 4 stars.
But the whole 'angst' does make me wonder how they've been prior to her catching romantic feelings, and how she imagines to actually navigate a romance with her, if she can't really be near her, without dying …
Meanwhile Yuzu continues to seem dense when it comes to the romantic feelings, but as said last volume, I do think she knows more than she shows.
4.75 out of 5: I adore this friend group so much it is not even funny. I love Minami learning the meaning of unconditional love as well Yuzu being clueless but sweet. The adventures this group went on were sweet as well from the wishing tree (especially Yuzu's) to their beach trip. I think this is going to be one of my favorite Yuri series.
