Hapless teenager Paul summons Astaroth, a Great Duke of Hell, to help him get a date with a girl in this devilishly funny fan-favorite WEBTOON comic.
The girl of your dreams barely knows you exist. Your friends can’t help. Your family is clueless. So where do you turn for love advice? Who can provide you with that essential assistance for the lovelorn? If you’re an average everyday teenager like Paul, you summon a powerful demon from the deep recesses of Hell, and frankly, hope for the best.
The demon in question is the Great Duke Astaroth, ruler of thirty legions of bloodthirsty hell creatures, powerful enough to raze cities to the ground. And now he finds himself on the mortal plane, compelled…to give a hapless kid dating advice?
In summoning Astaroth, Paul has set off a chaotic series of events. The Great Duke of Hell stands ready to claim Paul’s soul in less than a week, no matter how silly their bargain. Paul’s magic accidentally alerted the agents of the Holy Order, a group dedicated to protecting the world from the forces of evil, that something infernal is afoot. Paul’s sister Juliet, flabbergasted to find a demon in her home, has run away to hire an exorcist.
Plus, Paul’s dad is hiding something. And so is Elena, the object of all of Paul’s affection and the reason for all his complicated scheming.
But who ever said true love was easy?
This volume collects Season 1, Part 1 of the WEBTOON comic Love Advice from the Great Duke of Hell.
The title and the cover caught my eye. And the premise sounded intriguing, so I grabbed this.
Paul is an average teenager with a dilemma: the girl he likes barely knows that he exists, but he's clueless as to how to get to know her and confess his feelings. His friends and family are no help, so he does what any of us would. He summons Astaroth, one of the 23 Great Dukes of Hell, to ask for advice.
Honestly, this was better than I expected. The art is okay. It's certainly better than I could do, but that's a really low bar to clear. Trust me. What makes it all work is that Unfins’ comic timing is impeccable. There's a rhythm to the pacing and the page layouts that helps the punchlines land with just the right amount of oomph. The humor never feels forced. The situations are absurd, and the characters just play along and hope everything will become clear. I laughed out loud at the page with Astaroth calmly vacuuming the living room.
This is good, funny stuff. I'm definitely looking forward to volume 2. Highly recommended!
I'm not going to lie the art is not my personal favorite but it still has really nice art. I did come to like the art more as the story went on, I do think it fit the aesthetic of the book really well. As for the story itself it’s very weird but in a funny and good way. I laughed out loud a lot with this GN.it has similar vibes to death note in some ways.
Honestly the humour alone is worth giving this a read. Like there was a whole scene about who's the best powerpuff girl. I could keep about talking it but I fear I would enter spoiler territory and this is very much a GN you need to read for yourself.
Honestly can't wait for the next volumes! Really fun read!
Thank you netgalley as well as the publisher for an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this ebook ARC!
I was pretty misled by the cover for this series. I liked the art a lot more on that, while the art within the actual comic. Much more subdued colors and more intense lines (sorta reminded me of Attack on Titan, whose art style I'm also not a fan of). The story also wasn't what I was expecting, having very jumpy focus and little interaction between the MC and the Great Duke of Hell.
Can I see why people would like this? Sure. It has a specific type of comedy and mysteries sprinkled throughout. I'm just not one of the people.
talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, shit on it, vomit on it, eat it, give birth to it
I’m not sure what I was expecting from this but this was part paranormal, part action, part romance, and overall funny. I enjoyed the story and found myself laughing out loud at times at the antics of Paul and Astaroth and his minions. It did get confusing, at times, when it would bounce back in time to explain a scene but I got used to it after a while. Looking forward to reading the next one.
I received a copy from #NetGalley for an honest review.
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked this up. I had never read the Webtoon, nor had I heard of it. But I do love a good demon summoning!
Paul is in love with a girl he’s never even spoken to. Well, he wants to date her atleast. So he begins to study books that teach him old magic. Not only does he learn some neat tricks, but he summons Astaroth, one of the Dukes of Hell. For his one wish, he’ll have 7 days before he has to forfeit his soul to the demon.
The only problem is… Astaroth knows nothing about love.
I definitely wasn’t expecting to be laughing out loud while reading this. The artwork definitely lent to the humor and I loved that. Not only was it beautiful, but the character’s expressions were perfect and hilarious.
I’ll definitely be continuing this as it’s released from WebToon Unscrolled.
Super cute fun a quirky comic with amazing art! The character designs are fun and full of life and the art style works so well with the story! I definitely recommend checking it out when it comes out! It's a great well paced read for anyone who's a fan of funny but slightly edgy webcomics.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for an arc in exchange for an honest review!
This was my first introduction to this WEBTOON comic and I was super intrigued by it!
Based on the blurb I expected more laugh out loud comedy from shenanigans and bad dating advice for romance, but this took a bit of a different turn. There was still plenty of comedy, it was just dry and anxious, which can be even better sometimes. The romance hasn’t really taken off yet, but it appears that will be happening in volume 2.
In this book, we get a lot of groundwork set up for future episodes. There are quite a few people to keep track of, but by the end of the story you have a good feel for who everyone is and what their purpose to the overall storyline will likely be.
I must say, I’m not a huge fan of the MMC, Paul, as he seems really naïve and selfish, but that doesn’t make me dislike the book at all. I feel he is supposed to be this way as a juxtaposition to Astaroth given the ending of this book (no spoilers!).
I was taken aback by the ending in a good way…I am a masked man/demon/God dark romance lover so this is looking right up my freaking alley!!!
I enjoyed this book and it has a lot of elements I like. I’m very intrigued by the stopping point in this book, so I will definitely be checking out more episodes on Webtoons!
Thank you to NetGalley, Wattpad WEBTOON Book Group | WEBTOON Unscrolled, and unfins for the opportunity to read this book. The thoughts and opinions expressed above are honest and my own.
Based on the cover and title, I was expecting something completely different. That aside, I don't get the appeal on this one. The narrative was disjointed and difficult to follow, I didn't find it particularly funny, and the main character Paul had zero personality other than giving serial killer vibes.
The art was nice, I really liked how the demon was illustrated. I was fully expecting humor, I love to laugh, but this felt lacking. The humor felt repetitive like reusing jokes, and something maybe a preteen age group might find funny. It just wasn’t for me. I would recommend this to my younger cousin in 5th grade..
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read and review this book before publication.
First off, I did not finish this book. As I went through each page I became even more annoyed that such an immaturely written story such as this would even be published as a physical copy instead of staying on WEBTOON. What I mean by immature:
1. The story starts so fast that we have no context. No idea who the main character is, no background, etc. That is the whole point of exposition in a story. Even if the author wished to create mystery and suspense in the story, there needs to be a solid exposition. Where does the story take place? Who is the main character, and why should be be on their side?
2. There are so many grammatical and punctuation errors in the dialogue bubbles. Which is okay if this is a first draft. You would think that those would be cleaned up coming off of WEBTOON before it goes into an ARC. Errors starting out on page 3 does not bode well for the rest of the book.
3. The main character. Who the heck is this guy and why should we care about him? We’re thrown into a scenario where he summons a demon in his room after acquiring a special book. He wants this so he can get a girl. Can this scenario make for a great book? Yes, and it has. However, the main character comes off as an immature creep who stalks her and intimidates guys who show her any attention. I don’t know about y’all, but this giant red flag is a complete turn off for me.
I’m sure there are people who like this story, and I’m not begrudging them for finding entertainment. However, the subject matter is perpetuating something dangerous within relationships, and that is not something I want to expose my daughter or students to.
In this first collection, readers are introduced to Paul, a seemingly average guy with an interest in the occult. When Paul can’t figure out how to get the girl of his dreams to notice him, he decides to summon a powerful demon from Hell—you know, as one does. Shenanigans quickly ensue.
If you were a fan of Metalocalypse or any other OG Adult Swim shows from back in the day, you’d definitely like this series. The humor, the aesthetics, the comedic setup of it all—it’s very reminiscent of that period of television.
I enjoyed this a lot. I found it to be really funny—like, I genuinely chuckled or laughed out loud a couple of times. This is my type of humor.
Definitely recommend for readers who enjoy a bizarre little series~
I. . . really tried with this one, but it's just not my type of humor. Love Advice From the Great Duke of Hell tells the story? of a young teen who summons a Demon Lord to help him get a date with the girl he likes. I was all for this concept and was ready for the hilarity because I have heard good things about the webtoon.
First the art: The art is fine. It oscillates from general muted tones/traditional graphic novel comic art to incredibly overemphasized "ugly" art for the sake of comedy. This was fine for me as I don't exactly need to the art to be uniform all the time. This manner or over exaggerating for comedic effect is not my favorite, however.
The plot: is there? The story is told in chapters and follows multiple characters. While I didn't like the main character very much, some of the side characters were pretty funny with their absurdly dead pan reactions. For the plot to be about the duke giving love advice, there's surprisingly little focus on the girl the main character actually likes. This is probably purposeful, however, because the main character isn't particularly likeable or considerate of other people's feelings so far. Suffice to say, the plot suffers to enhance the running gag. If there were stakes at any point, they've been beaten to dust. Don't expect a story taking anything serious if you go into this.
The humor: When it comes down to it, the humor here just isn't for me. It feels random, dated, and just overall lackluster. I know there's definitely an audience for this, however. I know the absurdist humor can work, but I legitimately almost dnf'd the book half way when the powerpuff girl argument started happening. There were moments when the humor worked for me. When the CEO goes "As you notice there's a giant ******* hand on our building." or when one of the side character's truly unfortunate luck with timing gets him into all sorts of situations, I had a chuckle.
Overall, this is someone's book, but it's not mine. I just didn't vibe with the humor.
Unfortunately not good, I wouldn’t continue reading this series for free via ARC, Webtoon, or library.
There is almost no story; the main character summons a demon in the first panel and asks him to help him get a girlfriend. The demon says no I can like mind control her but that’s it basically, MC asks for advice, demon is like uh???? MC breaks the contract because he thinks it’s not helpful. But the MC can still use the demon’s powers? Which appear to just be arms coming out of the ground randomly. Super unclear.
It was a fun premise but it’s really unstructured and jumps between characters frequently and seems to focus on being random without forward movement or character development. But it’s random without being funny so it’s 200+ pages of not much.
Don’t recommend, this is the first ARC of a manga, webtoon, or graphic novel I’ve gotten and not liked thus far. If you’re curious, try checking out a few free chapters on Webtoon and see if you’d enjoy it, before committing to spending money on it.
4.00 - Very Good Simply hilarious; laughed out loud more than a couple times. Expressive and unique illustrations are memetiful (i.e. beautiful meme potential). Weird character interactions serve as an entertaining bridge between the relationship dynamics and standard plot. Blend of supernatural, action, romance, and comedy quirks result in an unpredictable turn of events. Random tangents and moments can be interpreted as inconsistency. Well-paced and engaging plot stays within the limits of the author's imagination. A lack of character development and exposition could be solved with stronger background or context. Confusing emotions within the characters and mood. Recommended for those looking for a light, edgy, and absurd take.
I would like to thank NetGalley for giving me an arc in exchange for an honest review.
This was cute and funny and absolutely ridiculous. From a teenager making a contract with a Duke of hell get the girl of his dreams, to the organization fighting against evil having an entire fight over which Powerpuff Girl was the best, this had me cackling.
I enjoyed the story, especially as Astaroth slowly goes crazy and devises a plan with the help of his friend Sushi to get back at the kid who made his life a living hell. Now I can't wait for the next book to see where it's going because there's so much going on and I need to know how it'll end!! Plus, the artwork is cute, rough, and looks unfinished in a way that totally works for this.

Paul has a crush on a girl who doesn't even know he exists. So he does the only logical thing and summons a demon from Hell to help him in his pursuit.
Absolutely hilarious. This was such a fun story. Plenty of action and humor with little mysteries and secrets popping up throughout. I especially loved watching Paul and Astaroth's antics.
This volume works well for introducing the different characters and setting the stage for how they are all connected. From Asaroth's seriously dedicated henchpeople to a mysterious secret society of demon hunters, the story has some really intriguing interactions.
So much fun to read. Definitely interested to see what happens next. Looking forward to Volume 2.
Hahaha, ok this is quite unique and funny. The art is very interesting and I wasn't a big fan at first, but it really did grow on me. The story is unique and funny, I definitely had some laugh out loud moments. I like where this is going and would be really interested to see where the story is taken.
Thank you to NetGalley, unfins, and Wattpad WEBTOON Book Group for an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was cute! Very funny and great personalities on the characters. There are a few moving parts that let me know future volumes will give lots of interesting plot. There are already interesting connections between the characters. My only complaint is that it throws a lot of short scenes at first so it's a little confusing, but by the end I was following along!
Thank you to NetGalley for an e-arc in exchange for an honest review!
Thank you NetGalley for this, I can't tell you how much fun I had reading this book!
Paul likes a girl but doesn't know what to do, his answer? Summoning Astaroth, a great Duke of hell to help him. This was so fun to read because it seemed as though neither me or the characters had much idea what was going on!! This is a brilliant idea for a story, Paul is powerful (somehow) enough to summon this demon but only wants to use him to get a girl. The demon can't believe what he's been roped into. The artwork of these characters had me laughing so much, it really conveyed their frustrations, reactions to the stupidity and the humour of it all. I particularly loved the scene with Astaroth hoovering! This could have just been silly (which it is in the best way) but there are also multiple different storylines happening that I am excited to get more into when this series continues.
Overall this was dark and absurdly hilarious and I would highly reckoned everyone give it a read as it will make you laugh whilst being confused and not wanting to stop reading.
So, it was quite… interesting, I guess. But unfortunately, it just wasn’t for me. I was expecting something completely different based on the title, and honestly, the synopsis gave me a totally different vibe. The story turned out to be kind of messy. Sure, there were moments that were a bit funny, but to be honest, it had way too many of those weirdly comical scenes that just didn’t land for me. It might work for others, but not my thing.
Althouuuuuugh… the last few chapters got me a little more invested. I wish it had been like that for the whole volume! :(((
