Mei and Yuzu’s relationship is as solid as one can get between a gyaru and a blob of unflavoured tofu that are engaged. Surely nothing can ever come between them… except the one thing many yuri are unprepared to deal with: boys.

Adding a guy into this mix of ‘all women all the time’ is such a decision that it would be hilariously ballsy and a great way to introduce the concept of bisexuality into a very ‘female forward’ sort of manga. If it wasn’t showing up in the pages of Citrus+, of course.

Long may this series never change. It is incredibly well-drawn, incredibly dumb (possibly stupid, even), and frequently nonsensical. But it does tend to be pretty entertaining, while also featuring some of the worst fashion choices I can imagine.

The guy, Arata, is the son of a chairman of an all-male school, so he’s naturally Mei’s gender-flipped doppelgänger, minus the part where he has a discernible personality. He and Mei are working on a project and that sends Yuzu into a tailspin.

Which is dumb. As Mei rightly points out, they’re engaged for pity’s sake, and it’s not like Mei exists in a vacuum. She made a choice and even discusses how Yuzu has changed her outlook on life. This is as non a non-issue as can be.

Teenagers though, amirite? Yuzu just dwells on this like Mei’s going to start bumping uglies the second she’s alone with Arata, even though Yuzu has a far better connection when she tries to get to know him. Arata being into Yuzu instead would be a great swerve, or just have him be gay and call it a day.

But that’s not this volume! No, Yuzu gets to mope and seek solace in Harumi. Which would probably be helpful, except Matsuri is around to disturb the peace by giving both sharp critiques of Yuzu and offering lots of ways Mei could leave Yuzu behind.

As usual, it’s hilarious. I love picking on this series, even if this volume is not as trashy as it usually gets. There’s also a distinct lack of Harumi and Matsuri definitely not getting together (cough cough) to distract. The other side characters remain so nondescript I don’t even remember them between volumes.

Consequently, you have a pretty staid entry that arguably focuses on everything it isn’t doing all that great and not the stuff I’m showing up for. It’s the manga equivalent of waiting for your bus to arrive and a shopping cart full of flaming garbage bags rolls by. Distracting, but pointless.

3 stars - yes, this series keeps on happening. When’s that next volume coming out again?

Mei can be pretty insufferable sometimes. I would really like to see her open up and be more loving towards yuzu. Seems like it’s the same story line in each volume.
