The drama for this volume was really great. I see how the tension is building up again and I love it. Even though I didn't enjoy the investigation part that much there were still many other things that happened in this volume which were a good surprise to me. Ichinose finally awoke from her deep slumber and I'm anticipating what is going to happen next. It truly felt a bit like something was missing for the past volumes when Ichinose wasn't there anymore, but I'm relieved to see her being back on tracks.

Many major events occurred in this volume which are probably a buildup for the upcoming volume(s). Even though the last time I didn't enjoy the buildup that much and rather the result of it, I truly enjoyed this time around the buildup as well, 'cause there were lots of stuff which surprised me and the whole girl's drama might be annoying on the long run, but at the moment it's still entertaining for me to see.

Unfortunately, this time the special exam was more in the background, which usually isn't the case, but at the same time was the special exam not that special to be that much in the foreground. Luckily, a boring special exam will make room for a higher possibility that the next special exam will be awesome again.

I was also a bit disappointed that the battle Nagumo and Ayanokouji agreed on was cancelled due to unexpected circumstances, but I know that they will have their fight sooner or later as there isn't much time left for Nagumo.

A main reason I see Amasawa as more likeable than some other characters in this book series is due to her actually annoying the characters that annoy me. It's like we have a mutual interest in making these characters feel miserable and I love it. She might be like Ryueen and Housen a bit more violent, but I seriously root for her violence. Especially, as she isn't just violent but also flirty and likes to tease others. She also most of the time looks like she isn't taking that many things serious, but when she is behaving more serious that's also a cool side of her.

Nanase is also back since the last volume and she still gives me golden retriever energy. I know that she isn't as innocent as she looks like, but at the same time I can't bring myself to imagine that she is really a good fit for an environment that is as manipulative like the one of the advanced nurturing highschool. She is one of those characters that I can't really read and I'm sure I will be surprised sooner or later of her in some way.

This volume once more gave me the feeling as if Sakayanagi only is supposed to look smart 'cause it's mentioned so often that obviously Horikita's class is extremely strong as they hold the joker (aka Ayanokouji) and Ryueen for not just his violent but actually strategical moves while Ichinose, now back on track also has her way of using her kindness for her own advantage and in general being more threatening than one suspects at first. But for Sakayanagi? Nothing. Just that they are all smart there but that's it. Maybe Sakayanagi's class and power is downgraded as they are already at the top, but at the same time I feel a bit nervous that the author might actually try to hint that Sakayanagi's class will loose in the end, which I actually don't want since I really like Sakayanagi herself and it would be a bit odd if she isn't smarter than some of these leaders at least. I always thought Ryueen would be the dumbest leader of all classes for thinking that using raw strength would bring him anywhere, but now it seems like the tables are turned, especially since Ichinose also shows growth while Sakayanagi and her class seem to be still the same even after two years at this school which will probably become a disadvantage soon enough.
(+ at the end of this volume she also lost a valuable pawn, which hints even more that Sakayanagi's class will fall pretty soon)

Anyway, I'm looking forward the most for Ichinose's development as she seems to change a lot right now and I want to see if that might even influence the way I see her. As for now, I never really liked her, but also didn't really hate, one could say I was rather neutral to her. Let's see if it stays that way or if my opinion of her will change soon due to her development.

Things are not looking good for Kei unless she can grow, but not really any sign of that yet. Ichinose's growth may just spell her downfall. Major character development in this one.

I feel like this needs to be a lighter novel. I noticed this before, but it's particularly grating now that I have to invest practically a whole day to reading ONE volume of the series: A character will say something, then Ayanokouji will have to immediately have some internal monologue about it, even if the something was something he said himself. (Also, I guess, in the odd times someone else is the first-person speaker, which always confuses me.)

I also have to wonder if this made more sense (or, less nonsense) in the original Japanese, where a very lot of things are grammatically correct when leaving out things like subject/verb that would make less sense translated literally to English:
"I have several candidates in mind, but... I wonder if he's still on campus," mused Horikita.

Judging from the fact that Horikita had just said "he," it sounded like it was a male first-year student she was after.
I mean, USUALLY? Girls don't tend to have he/him pronouns. At least, in my experience, people identifying as girls tend to prefer she/her.

It also strikes me how irregular the levels of drama are in this series. Sure, it would be weird to have EVERY SINGLE EVENT in the series be as wild as the Uninhabited Island events, but this one feels... kind of lacking, this time around. "100 QUESTIONS, 100 ANSWERS" declares the back cover.

That's it. There's a test with 100 questions, which the entire class will answer as a group, one student at a time, with each student answering a maximum of 5 questions, minimum of 2.* The only other strategy suggested to differentiate this from just normal testing involves that the lower ranking the student who answers a question correctly, the higher the score (handicap, so the lower-ranked classes have a chance to win).

Feels a bit flat, but I guess either the school or the author wanted to give the students a break (or, just couldn't think of anything better). Even Ryuuen calls this test the most "lukewarm" one they've had to date.

Strangely, there's a surprising lack of covering the actual exam, as far as two-thirds of the way into the book. Well, no, I suppose that's not that surprising, since the Mixed Training Camp was fairly straightforward about training the students in specific subjects that would be boring to write AND read. Like, do we really, REALLY need to know what specific maths they studied to be able to answer the 42nd question about the volume of a hexagonal pyramid 5cm tall and 3cm on each side of the base? (Or, you know, whatever.)

Anyway, it feels a bit relationship-heavy, is what I'm saying. Not that that's BAD, but this go around, it feels curiously slow, and since it's been a minute since the prior volume I read, I can't remember if it's just ALWAYS this slow-paced. I'm guessing it is, though, not that I really want to invest in going back to check when my reading list is already VERY LONG and taking up several shelves of disorganised space.

*not sure if 20 students could answer them all to let the extras skip out on answering, that wasn't covered, other than maybe it's an unwritten rule that they have to plan accordingly for ALL students to answer the minimum of 2, else the test will be invalidated and scored as zero

I wasnt able to rate volume 0 as its not here on good reads. I will not delve too much into it but volume 0 is definitely my favorite volume of the series so far. So volume 9 was heavily focused on Ichinose and maybe class D. Honestly I really enjoyed it as I quite like Ichinose and I honestly i immensely enjoy Ichinose and Ayanokoji interacting and everything around Ichinose. I was always so excited when Ayanokoji talked to Ichinose in past volume even in year 1 so i really enjoyed this volume. And we can see Ichinose changing.. or perhaps just showing her true nature? Probably the former but its very interesting. And then end when Ichinose talked with ryuenn and he realized too that ichinose isnt goody silly goose anymore. And them meeting up was very fun and how ayanokoji is dealing with ichinose but i have noticed a pattern in how ayanokoji is dealing with her and that is to add himself to her life with zero pressure. Im not sure if its intentional or if im overthinking but in past volumes and when ichinose was breaking down he was just with her and present being there for her not even saying much and when they met up he didnt impose a location to where they should go but he just said to do whatever she wants to do. It feels like he is just there with her adding himself. idk. Anyway I also felt like at the last illustration when talking to Kei there was just something in her eyes and then her saying "not yet" is crazy. Im super curious about the developements in others and namely Ichinose and ayanokoji

Definitely a weaker volume, which is surprising given there was a special exam and that it follows the 'filler' volume for the Hokkaido school trip. I don't know how to feel about the main plotline, with the most setup, basically just serving to provide more background on the current state of year 3, with most of the information gained just being ideas that are implied or can be assumed by the reader from previous volumes. Of course, the intention is to push Kiriyama to the front a bit and remind the reader that Kiryuin exists but I don't see how any of it will matter unless Nagumo's current trajectory(towards a final battle vs ayanokoji) is redirected towards internal conflicts in the year, maybe Ayanokoji will take advantage of these somehow. The special exam itself was for sure the worst in the story so far, and the characters acknowledging it's simplicity doesn't really remedy that for me, so that was another weakness. The most interesting development was clearly Ichinose's progress, solidified by the closing dialogue with Ryuen. Though I've never been too intrigued by her character, this new direction seems solid, particularly because it will likely involve more unravelling of ayanokoji's psychology in the end, with Ichinose acting as the catalyst for this.

Loved that this book was a set up for the end of the second year. I can appreciate it for what it was. There were a lot of unexpected developments with the new student council members and Ichinose. I really also liked that we learned more about the third years and how Nagumo operated in order to maintain control. Ayan was kind of tame in this volume, hoping to see more action from him in the later volumes. Can't wait to find out how this year is going to end in terms of the second year rankings.

Volume carino.

This volume focuses more on Ichinose's class and the new Student Council president, rather than Class 2-B. This is while the second year classes all prepare for a "dull" special exam to close out 2nd semester. Kiyotaka also decides to instigate some relationship strife (for science). This one is more to set the stage for the start of 3rd semester, so some things remain unresolved.

I have to admit that when I read these light novels, I was always afraid that I would miss out on the author's original voice, and I'm sure i do miss out on a few things, but I've come to realize that if the writing is strong enough; the voice shines through. I absolutely loved this book, and it could be because I'm so into this author's writing. Lol

3.0 - Ao mesmo tempo que muita coisa aconteceu, sinto que nada realmente avançou. Gosto mais das tramas envolvendo o terceiro ano do que ver a Ichinose psicopata

E o exame especial foi uma merda também btw

Weak entry in the series. Almost no time spent on the actual exam and its strategies, most of it wasted on interpersonal drama. This feels like a filler.
