I loved Minimalista but this one felt like it was trying to do too many things - self-help, organization, time management, money management, career exploration, and more.

Nothing a baseline responsible adult doesn’t already know. Eat your vegetables. Drink water. Exercise. Edit your clutter. Don’t spend beyond your means. Seek community and meaningful work. Reduce social media intake. There you go saved you a read.

As a fellow lover of organization and tidiness, I always enjoy Shira Gill’s beautiful books. The advice is thoughtful but nothing earth shattering - I enjoyed reading this at the start of the year to consider my goals and new practices for 2025.

if you read shira's blog or follow her on insta you won't find much new content in lifestyled. Minimalista: Your Step-by-Step Guide to a Better Home, Wardrobe, and Life is the better book for inspiration & ideas on home organization. here she branches out into health/wellness, finances, + relationships/communities. there is nothing wrong with that but it's not what i'm looking for. i'm here for the pretty pictures of organized homes. :)

Shira Gill is a San Francisco-based home organization influencer whose first few books focused on minimalism. In 2024's LifeStyled, she attempts to expand her platform of influence to advise people (mostly women) on organizing and optimizing all areas of their lives, a la Rachel Hollis or Gretchen Rubin or Oprah or any of the thousands of life coaches shilling their advice these days (she even talks about how the $12K she invested in a life coaching program was so worth it -- I personally don't have a high opinion of the life coaching industry, if you couldn't already tell). LifeStyled covers her advice on home organization, digital organization, time management, health management, financial management, etc., at a generic, surface level and with few insights that are likely to be novel or groundbreaking to anyone who's familiar with self-help/productivity literature or has successfully mastered basic adulting skills. Like most books in this genre, it borrows heavily from positive psychology, with a few vulnerable anecdotes from Gill's life thrown in a la Brene Brown to make the advice seem more personal and relatable.

I don't want to totally knock this book as there are likely people who follow Gill and will find this advice helpful, but for the rest of us who generally have our lives together, this is an easy pass.

My statistics:
Book 153 for 2025
Book 2079 cumulatively

This is an excellent book, filled with many helpful and actionable tips to help get your house organized. I have read all of Shira Gill’s books and they never disappoint, this book is like taking Minimalista a step further to really pin down how to keep your house from becoming cluttered again and to implement systems to improve your home life overall. Part one is a Tool Kit with three tools to keep the amount of items you have to just what you need and use, how to create systems in your home (which I already use and find indispensable), and implementing habits. The second part is The Practice, broken down into chapters for Health and Wellness, Home and Environment, Relationships and Community, Career and Finance, Personal Development. All of the chapters have very helpful personal stories and quick tips for trying out the suggestions. I highly recommend this book for those who love Shira’s previous books and for anyone looking to find helpful tips to streamline their home life.

I received an advance copy of this book from Random House publishing, all opinions are my own.

This was fine. The information provided was consistent and systematic, but not particularly new or unheard of. The pictures were beautiful but totally unrelated to the text that they were near. Author is a fellow Bay Area woman and she did say a lot of stuff that resonated— but a lot of stuff that didn’t too (especially the coaching industry stuff and the stray mentions of new age healers that might be fine but came off a little scammy for my taste). Ultimately the presentation was mostly clean (missing a period or maybe a word at the bottom of page 219) and felt very actionable, but unlike other personal dev books that changed the way I thought (like Buy Yourself the F*ing Flowers) this one was pretttttty bland and standard.

That said, honestly I’d be interested in the authors other works about a more narrow subject she has more experience in. And the writing style was pretty good, fun and light but not too condescending like some girl power books can be.

I got an advance copy of this book and it is everything I hoped it would be. While her other books focus more on home organization, this book pulls from Shira's training as a life coach. She takes the same systems that make her organizational skills so effective and applies them to real life. Everything from schedules to priorities to dreams to what's for dinner. Her style is down to earth, funny, and incredibly practical. There are sections at the end of each chapter with actionable items that you can knock out quickly to get your momentum going. Shira has done it again!

Enjoyed her other books on home organization so picked up this one expecting more of same. Of course she addresses this in a section of the book but I found she veered from her lane into health and finances, which is maybe best left to actual professionals in these areas. Appreciate she is a certified life coach and so something like the topic of wellness makes sense, but felt health and finance topics weren’t so much in her area of expertise and may have contained some…questionable advice possibly. Better books to read on such topics for sure. Enjoy the home organization content though!

Interesting concept of extending organizing principles to life, though it fell generic in the health and wellness section. Continuing my trend of consuming self help books without actioning them lol

"LifeStyled" isn’t just a book—it’s a toolkit for anyone looking to step out of survival mode and into a more intentional, balanced, and fulfilling life.

Shira Gill has poured her heart and soul into this, and it shows on every page. With honesty, warmth, and humor, she shares the practical tools and concrete strategies she used to edit all aspects of her own life and invites us all to do the same.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or ready to refocus on what truly matters, this book is for you. It’s also for you if you’re looking for inspiration and motivation in all areas of your life. Whether it’s setting boundaries, redefining success, or even learning to say no, LifeStyled offers a roadmap for creating a life that feels freeing, aligned, and yes, deeply satisfying.

What makes LifeStyled truly stand out is how it addresses every aspect of life. You’ll learn how to set boundaries that protect your time, energy, and priorities, so you can focus on what truly matters. The book also offers realistic strategies for optimizing your wellness—improving sleep, nutrition, and energy in ways that fit into your daily life. It encourages you to declutter your relationships, investing in meaningful connections that uplift and inspire you, while also aligning your finances with your values to redefine success in a way that feels personal and authentic.

Finally, you’ll discover how to maximize your time and energy by prioritizing activities that bring you joy and engagement, and how to reframe your mindset by replacing unproductive thought patterns with motivating new narratives. It's such a comprehensive read that it feels like five books in one!

My favorite part? It’s approachable, practical, encouraging—like a good friend guiding you along to make positive changes. Nothing feels out of reach—every tip is something you can start applying immediately, no matter where you are in your life. The stories Shira shares about her own messy, awkward moments make the process feel less intimidating and more like an exciting adventure. Yes, we can do this too!

So if you’re ready to simplify your life, reclaim your time, and find more ease in the everyday, LifeStyled will inspire and guide you every step of the way. It’s going to be the book I return to over and over and the one I love to gift to others. Go for it!

a globally recognized organizing expert, speaker, and coach gives lifestyle tips to minimize your living spaces and simplify your routines

likes:
+ gorgeous cover, photographs, and page design
+ overall a good "coffee table book"

dislikes:
- a little superficial: most tips are obvious if you have any amount of "type a" personality

general notes:
• consider an auto-responder for social media if you decide to separate from apps but don't want to commit to a full deletion, like "hey i don't check messages here anymore, if you want to reach me you can do xyz" and use services like unroll.me to mass unsubscribe from emails
• transfer photos and videos to a hard drive and remove from personal devices just to quickly clear your digital clutter (with the intention of sorting them later)
• consider a daily uniform to reduce decision fatigue
• commit to a full 24-hour detox sometimes, like a tech shabbat

quotes:
"in america, as well as most other western cultures, we are oversaturated, overstimulated, overextended, overscheduled, and exhausted. the cumulative effects of a cluttered home and life can lead to anxiety, depression, and other serious mental health challenges. lost passports, missed medical appointments, and cluttered calendars are more than just a minor inconvenience."

"i define minimalism as being radically intentional - not just with the things you own, but with how you spend your time, resources, and energy ... if the term minimalism makes you squirm, just replace it with intentionalism."

"people think they need elaborate, color-coded systems or gadgets to get organized, when really, they almost always just need to have less to manage"

"when you feel stuck, as yourself the following clarifying questions: could i happily live without this? am i operating out of pressure or guilt? is this thing moving me closer to the life i want?"

"you can be the juiciest peach in the patch, but some people just don't like peaches."

"a belief is just a thought you've practiced a lot"

This is a practical guide to intentional living—making deliberate decisions and taking actions that align with your core values. The author’s background in minimalism provides a straightforward, organized way to reduce physical, digital, and mental clutter, create systems to support goals, and develop sustainable habits. She applies these tools as a framework across five key areas: health and wellness, home and environment, relationships and community, career and finance, and personal development. Specific prompts and strategies are included to help implement improvements.

The book is designed so that you can revisit individual chapters at any time to recalibrate as your values and priorities change and evolve.

The book provides incremental steps and plenty of client examples. The “try it,” “quick wins,” and “bottom line” are helpful for reflecting, taking notes, and taking action.

The Health and Wellness chapter describes how to improve your physical and mental health with simple, effective habits that deliver strong results. It highlights five health helpers: (1) identify your fuel foods; (2) eat your veggies; (3) stay hydrated; (4) get moving; and (5) prioritize sleep. It also covers nine mental health boosters that include strategies like going outdoors, trusting your feelings, practicing self-care, seeking support, and more.

The suggestions for setting up smart systems are doable. For example, make standing wellness appointments. “Be proactive, invest in your health, and book your preventive care in advance, automating repeat appointments as you are able” (p. 94). Another example is her three-step method for eating healthfully: plan ahead, stock up on fueling foods, and prep in advance so they are visible and ready to eat.

Most people will not see these concepts as new or innovative. It may be overwhelming to read it cover-to-cover and go through every prompt, tip, and actionable baby step. Instead, the author recommends identifying the major life area where you want to make strides and start there.

Life Styled: Your Guide to a More Organized and Intentional Life by Shira Gill was one of the best books of my month. This is like a practical handbook to help cut through the physical and mental clutter, simplify organization, establish easy routines, and transform your home and living space. Her intuitive and practical suggestions help reclaim control over your home and schedule.

This is so much more comprehensive than a simple decluttering and finding things that ‘spark joy’ (like Marie Kondo, which I am not a fan of – her suggestions are just not practical for a busy household with kids). Shira Gill covers not just organizing your home and environment, but she also does a deep dive into personal wellness, career/finance, community and relationships, navigating your calendar and schedules.

I loved that the book has real-life and very practical examples, actionable items, quick wins that you can integrate into your life for real transformation. Accompanied by absolutely gorgeous pictures by Vivian Johnson, just reading the book was a soothing act of wellness for me.

I also need to mention the quality of the book – the pages, the binding , the cover – is fantastic, so different from a lot of cheaply made books that flood the market.

This is THE self help book that you have been looking for, the one book that you need.

Thank you to Ten Speed Press for providing me a free copy of this book. This review is my honest opinion.

Gill's suggestions begin with adjusting the volume of your life, creating systems that work for you, and then implementing habits to keep the systems working and volume at a reasonable level. She considers health/wellness, home/environment, relationships/community, career/finance, and personal development (which includes both giving yourself "dream days" and giving back to the communities and earth around you). Lovely photographs that don't really have anything to do with the text other than to "keep the volume down." "Quick wins" and "Try it" sections along with prompts, real-life examples, and plenty of headers give a feeling of organization and practicality. Intentionality is big here, along with journaling and meditation. Too bad the font for her wrap-up goes small enough that some will miss her essential last thoughts. And don't start with the quick-start guide at the end, 15 activities for each category, and way too much--better to follow another Goodreads reviewer and spread things out.

An indispensable guide to creating a beautiful life centered on what matters most;
What did I like about this reading?
This summation found on page 2 gives readers excerpts into what Ms. Gill is all about and of her three books coming full circle: in her book, Minimalista, Shira taught readers how to edit, elevate, and maintain their homes using a minimalist mindset with the five-step process. Shira’s second book, Organized Living, took readers into the home of some twenty-five organizing experts across the globe to illuminate how an organization can be leveraged as a tool to create more order, ease, freedom, and joy. And now in this third book, Life Styled, Shira shares how you can take these same principles and use them to transform your entire life.
I particularly liked the one about media/email and setting it to say: I am on a day off, can’t reply now or such…??
This book is a win-win all around with plenty to learn and apply and continue doing with ease.

Thank you, Shira, all the best!

I have (and love) ALL of Shira Gill's books, but this one may be the best! There was so much that resonated with me profoundly, including when she gently but firmly reminded us that "lowering the bar on purpose" is better than accidentally dropping the ball. We all lead such busy, full and sometimes chaotic lives: jobs, kids, houses, pets, philanthropy, volunteering, whatever you do, you probably do it A LOT. She divided this book into super actionable sections, so you can read this all at once or parse it out and jump around, starting, for example, in the "Health and Wellness" section, where she gives sage advice and offers ways to truly incorporate new habits, with less friction. Her insight into creating systems for everything from career and finance to community is a true gift. I now know what to buy all my friends for the holidays - its not only an important read, but also a beautiful book to see on your coffee table or nightstand.

I was pleasantly surprised to find my middle school best friend mailed me this book (we were talking about it coming out and both loved Minimalista a load). It is a nice book! Not as good, but still it was good.

This book gave me more insight into Shira Gill's life rather than just her skills in getting rid of things and how you can accomplish it. Instead, this book gives life coaching tools (My friend and myself are certified life coaches) to help walk yourself through each portion. This includes mental health boosters, goal making, how to make your personal environment better to help your mood, planning your dream day, how to create a budget to get your finances in order, understanding how to organize your relationships, how to make habits for your life that can help set a better routine, and more.

I really enjoyed the book for what it was. The first half sucked me in pretty quickly.

Shira Gill writes about simplicity and organization. She has worked with clients trying to simplify and organize their homes. This book moves beyond just the home to look at simplifying and organizing a person's own life. The book first gives some overall advice about reducing and then creating systems and habits for life. The second part of the book looks at different aspects of life organization such as health, home, career and personal development.
This is a beautiful hardbound book with great photographs. Gill gives a lot of personal information and reflection on how she has implemented the strategies she suggests, which makes this book almost a memoir. This is the type of book to read and implement slowly over time. I highly recommend for anyone interested in organization or design.

Shira Gill has done it again! As a fan of her book *Minimalista* and a regular reader of her newsletter, I couldn't wait to dive into her latest book, *LifeStyled*. It beautifully builds on the concepts from *Minimalista*, offering fresh insights while also standing strong on its own. Packed with practical tips and easy-to-follow advice, this book takes the overwhelming task of decluttering and makes it feel approachable and achievable. As someone who loves collecting quirky knick-knacks, I found *LifeStyled* full of gentle yet thought-provoking ideas that inspire you to take action—one small, manageable step at a time. The practical advice and thought-provoking concepts make it a valuable read for those looking to embrace a more minimalist lifestyle.

I’ve been on a “simplifying” journey for a while now and my husband got Shira Gill’s first book for me for Mother’s Day. I absolutely loved it and started following her and was excited to learn a new book was coming out soon! I preordered the book and devoured it the moment it came. This book is wonderful in that it’s a quick and easy read, but also has enough depth that I will be coming back to it time and again to follow her steps for making my life more intentional. It’s pragmatic yet inspiring, both making me want a better life and giving me the tools to get there. This will probably have a permanent spot on my bedside table as I continue to work through it and simplify my life. Plus, it’s beautiful to look at!

Brief Summary of Book:
A comprehensive self-help guide that applies professional organizer Shira Gill's signature blend of practical minimalism and organization beyond just the home to the entirety of your life. The core premise is that most people are overextended, overscheduled, and overwhelmed, and that by cutting mental clutter and simplifying routines, you can create a life of greater ease, alignment, and freedom.

In Conclusion:
Overall, this book is nothing groundbreaking or new, however the steps detailed out in the book comes with easy action to follow through. It felt realistic and can be done. The content in it are timeless and can be revisited again when needed.

I am so happy to be digging into Shira Gill's third book. I love her definition of "minimalism": being radically intentional--not just with the things you own, but with how you spend your time, resources and energy.
The ideas and the activities are challenging me (in good ways) to evaluate my current commitments and habits. It is inspiring me to build new systems in the areas of my life that have been a bit stagnant.
Gill's writing is approachable and honest. Her examples are very helpful and the photography is gorgeous. Grab a cup of coffee, a journal, and pen and cozy up with a blanket or by the fire and dig into this book!
