In una calda sera d’agosto parigina, due coppie si incontrano a cena nella bella casa di Étienne. Claudia, la sua compagna, patologicamente timida, ha cucinato per tutto il giorno nel tentativo di smorzare la sua apprensione. Anche Johar e Rémi, gli ospiti, non sono tranquilli. Intorno al tavolo, ciascuno di loro è preso dai propri pensieri: che riguardino il lavoro o i sentimenti, i quattro protagonisti sentono di doverli nascondere agli altri. Eppure basta poco perché tutto cambi: l’odore speziato del curry, una telefonata in ritardo, un cellulare che scivola dalla tasca di una giacca… In questo ritratto “di famiglia in un interno”, la cui atmosfera richiama Yasmina Reza e Roman Polanski, l’esordiente francese Cécile Tlili mantiene accesa la tensione con maestria mentre mette radicalmente in discussione le aspettative sulle donne nella società e intreccia un inno delicato all’emancipazione e alla libertà.

I couldn’t put down this book. I read it in one day and I haven’t stopped thinking about it.

This book was very relatable, and highlights how mundane life can truly be. The book is full of broken relationships, compulsive liars and dark truths about identity and undesirability.

The prose is stunning, yet the characters and their livelihoods are sticky, overwhelming and confusing, which also reflects reality, which is also a mess.

Even those we love and swore that we would could spend the rest of our lives with them will eventually drift away. Instead of time bringing you closer, time emphasises the distance between you.

Set in the hot sweltering Paris, ‘Just a Little Dinner’ follows two couples who meet for dinner in one of their apartments. However little do they know that this dinner will reveal their true identities, past traumatic experiences and the painful reality of their broken relationships.

Definitely give this one a read if you have the time, it’s translated from French by Katherine Gregor and she did a brilliant job translating this book into English. I’m obsessed with the writing!!

Il peut s'en passer des choses, le temps d'un dîner... Des vies bouleversées, des secrets dévoilés, des pensées enfouies depuis longtemps enfin révélées.

Trahisons, mensonges, secrets, remise en question... mais aussi beaucoup d'émotions, des prises de décisions et de la sororité.

Un huis clot addictif que j'ai lu d'une traite !

Set in picturesque Paris, author has painted such a dichotomy of characters, that are poles apart yet searching for something so internal

While Etienne & Claudia's relationship is built on inequality & silence, Rémi & Johar's relationship is fractured by success and neglect

The prose here is atmospheric & sensory

Translation by Katherine Gregor is oh so perfect!

The interplay of themes such as power dynamics, past traumas that are haunting these characters, their struggles at emotional & psychological levels makes this an experience to remember

The importance of power & money is reiterated. You like it or not, if you have power & money you can choose the life you want or else your life will be what people with power & money choose for you

A very dull story of interactions between two couples at a dinner party in modern Paris, though I couldn’t help but compare it to the BBC Play for Today from the Seventies, Abigail’s Party. Here though, far less happens.

It maybe that it suffers in translation. I say that because it won the Prix Goncourt for a debut novel in 2023.

I mean, what a way to start the year. I’ve said it once, I’ll say it again—I love a dinner party. Not attending them, no, but give me a tense and taut story centered around a dinner party and I’m all ears. Tlili delivers on all fronts. Using a close third person perspective to bounce between each of the four dinner guests we come to understand the purpose behind this get together and the hidden motivations and desires of them all. Though they are ostensibly there as two couples, everyone is on an island of their own, the distance between them all too great to cross.

Little reveals are dropped left and right, racketing up the tension until it reaches a simmer. Delectable prose translated flawlessly by Gregor, it’s hard not to gobble this one up in one sitting.

Je voelt het onheil naderen….! Doet een beetje denken aan ‘het diner’ van Herman Koch.

I’ll have to admit that this was honestly just boring to me, so i’m glad it was a short book. I felt like everyone disliked each other A LOT and there was a lot of internal bitching and moaning and not a lot of communicating. May it be clear this book just wasn’t for me.

And like don’t underestimate an annoying mc, it can add to the story and make it fun… but in this case everyone was incredibly insufferable and the men, i don’t even have words for them.

Read for Book Club.
Has some beautifully worded phrases/sentences & plenty of good sentiments to take from it. Overall, though, it still feels one-dimensional and surprisingly repetitive for such a short book.
I'm not sure if I'm supposed to dislike all of the characters but I find them all irritating for different reasons (maybe that was intentional, idk)

Vier mensen hebben een diner op een late zomeravond in Parijs. Aan het einde van de avond zien alle levens er anders uit, er worden beslissingen genomen en knopen doorgehakt. Dit boek heeft me aangenaam verrast en heel mooi hoe Cécile Tlili in een paar zinnen een relatie kan typeren, of een situatie duidelijk kan maken.

Leider verschenkt dieses Debut etwas, weil die Geschichte ihre Kraft erst auf den letzten 50 Seiten entfaltet und noch dazu etwas vorhersehbar ist. Die Charaktere sind gut gestrickt, aber deren Aufeinandertreffen bei besagtem Abendessen hätte für meinen Geschmack etwas bissiger ausfallen können bei mehr wörtlicher Rede. Viele interessante Gedanken verbleiben nur im Inneren der Personen, was den Verlauf der Ereignisse etwas träge macht.

An enjoyable read, like a piece of theatre. Two couples gathered in a Parisian apartment on an oppressive August evening. Etienne, old money, struggling at work as the initial glow of his posh boy image is waning leaving not much substance in its wake. Johar is from a modest Tunisian family and has had to claw her way to the top. Remi her husband, long-time supportive of his wife's career, but is now having an affair with a younger colleague and finally, Claudia, the almost pathologically shy partner of Etienne, who cannot quite understand how she has found herself in this relationship.

As the awkward dinner plays out, I could feel the oppressiveness of the fraught relationships, the too-tight corporate clothes, the drift between the characters and their conflicting interests.

However, one thing that narks me a little is the story arc of Johar. I am always a bit disappointed with these tales of women who have fought their way tooth and nail to get to the top only to realise they aren't really sure if they want it. I read the author's biography and noticed that she herself seemed to have had a successful corporate career before branching into something else, and I completely appreciate that this is a valid message, but I notice we rarely get these tales of overcoming woe to get to the top for men who subsequently think 'oh actually after all this work, I think I will do something else'. The message seems to be women really only try and get to the top of the corporate world to prove they can do it, but once there, well they finally realise what is important and move on to something else.

However, this is a personal issue, the book was otherwise a very fun read.

this was just rich people talking and moaning. sadly I found this incredibly cliche, the characters very irritating and overall nothing progressed until the last 30 pages. I appreciate the themes explored but it felt completely unrefined and jumbled that I couldn’t connect with any character nor their personal story. I enjoyed how it was set against the backdrop of a single evening which added to this suffocating feeling of tension the book was going for but unfortunately it fell flat for me.

Intrigerend verhaal over een diner van vier vrienden die meer voor elkaar verborgen houden dan dat ze elkaar kennen. Ideaal script voor een arthouse-film met topacteurs.

Aantekeningen voor mezelf gemaakt. Eén grote spoiler.

Vier mensen, veertigers, komen bij elkaar voor een diner. Étienne, succesvol advocaat, is de organisator. Zijn vriendin, Claudia, fysiotherapeute, kookt. Johar (vrouw), succesvol manager in een IT-bedrijf, en Rémi (man) zijn de genodigden. Claude komt uit een gezin met maatschappelijk succesvolle maar liefdeloze ouders die zich als psychiater en gynaecoloog als ondernemers in de gezondheidszorg gedroegen. Claude is fysiotherapie gaan studeren want “‘Ik wilde graag voor andere mensen zorgen. Ik vind het fijn om mensen beter te maken, en dat lukt me beter met mijn handen dan met mijn woorden.’” In haar relatie met Etienne is zij ook de dienstbare, en hij de baas. “Ze heeft een hekel aan haar eigen dienstbaarheid, hoe ze zich gewillig de rol van gastvrouw aanmeet.” Ze is een relatie met Étienne aangegaan om los te komen van haar achtergrond en toegang te krijgen tot het elitaire geprivilegieerde milieu van hem. Maar: “Étienne kijkt haar niet aan. Hij ziet haar niet. Ze is niets.”

Johar en Rémi zijn bij elkaar maar ook weer niet: “‘Naar wie typt ze zo?’, zucht Rémi. ‘Het is lachwekkend hoe we van de ene op de andere dag gestopt zijn met elkaar te praten. Gestopt zijn elkaar te begrijpen. Als we elkaar ooit begrepen hebben.’” Dit zegt Rémi tegen Claudia, maar wacht haar reactie niet af en loopt weg; van communicatie lijkt geen sprake, alleen van statements. Misschien één van de redenen voor het door hem gesignaleerde probleem?

Johar is geboren en getogen in Frankrijk maar van Tunesische ouders. Ze heeft zich opgewerkt tot succesvolle, rijke en altijd werkende manager in IT. Ze leidt een bedrijfsovername waarin zijn een nog verantwoordelijker baan zal krijgen. Étienne wil de klus om haar juridisch bij te staan in dat proces. Zij heeft dat snel en kickt op de macht die ze over hem heeft. “Maar de waarheid is dat aan deze promotie de kwaadaardige geur van wraak kleeft.” Wraak omdat mensen eerder in har carrière niet in haar geloofden omdat ze vrouw is en van Tunesische afkomst. Ze heeft zich omhoog gevochten met keihard werken en de kloteklussen te doen: gesprekken met woedende klanten, medewerkers ontslaan, contracten corrigeren, software herschrijven, het wegpoetsen van het accent en taalfouten van haar opvoeding… Johar heeft het verlangen “om in de ogen van haar collega’s een zekere onderdanigheid te lezen.” Haar carrière is eenzaam: “dit kale, eenzame pad, dat haar stap voor stap heeft weggeleid van haar vrienden, haar ouders en Rémi. Dit pad waarop geen kinderstemmetje de stilte doorbreekt.”

Étienne heeft het als advocaat moeilijk op zijn kantoor; hij verliest klanten en daarmee aanzien. “Dit boekjaar stevent af op en catastrofe , als hij niet snel een paar nieuwe zaken binnenhaalt. Vanavond vecht hij voor zijn voortbestaan.” Étienne heeft een grote nieuwe deal nodig, zoals de bedrijfsovername van Johar. “(…) het zit in zijn aard om steeds maar meer te willen: steeds nog groter, steeds nog mooier.” Hij is voor Claudia gevallen omdat ze mooi is en hij haar verlegenheid als een uitdaging zag, “Maar ook, of misschien vooral, omdat hij wist dat zijn superioriteit over haar nooit ter discussie zou staan. Vanavond wordt hij misselijk bij de gedachte dat zij op een dag weleens medelijden met hem zou kunnen krijgen.”

Claudia is zwanger van Étienne maar heeft het hem nog niet verteld. Het kind is haar vlucht uit de eenzaamheid van haar ongelijkwaardige relatie.

Étienne is Franse middenklasse-bourgeois, opgegroeid in een winkeliersgezin in Reims. Hij kreeg het appartement van zijn ouders toen die in Normandië gingen wonen.

Rémi heeft een maîtresse, Manon. Als compensatie voor zijn gevoel van minderwaardigheid naast Johar en haar onthouding van liefde naar hem. “Rémi merkte dat hij hunkerde naar liefde. De onthouding daarvan, die Johar hem had aangedaan, was verschrikkelijk en de terugval duizelingwekkend.” Rémi merkt dat Manon ook gevoelens ontwikkelt voor hem. “Samenwonen met haar leek uitgesloten, maar het idee van een leven zonder haar scheen hem tegenwoordig ook volkomen absurd.”

“Meestal wordt er in de wereld van Étienne niet over geld gesproken, ook al is het overal aanwezig, weliswaar verborgen: in de perfecte pasvorm van een overhemd, het katachtige silhouet van een auto, de fluweelzachte afdronk van een wijn. Étienne heft Rémi zelf de kunst van de suggestie bijgebracht, zonder iets te hoeven zeggen, als het gaat om geld. (…) Uiteindelijk had Rémi begrepen dat wie ten volste van de luxe wil genieten een publiek nodig heeft.” Rémi vraagt zich af of hij Johar zou kunnen verlaten voor zijn maîtresse Manon: “Hij weet niet zeker of zijn liefde voor haar groot genoeg is om afstand te doen van alle comfort waar hij zo aan hecht.” Daarnaast betwijfelt Rémi if Manin nog wel in hem geïnteresseerd is als hij zijn maatschappelijke status en welvaart kwijtraakt.

Als Claudia tussen het afruimen van het hoofdgerecht en het dessert een miskraam krijgt, is de enige bij wie ze steun kan zoeken haar gynaecoloog. Die heeft op dat moment nachtdienst en kan haar in het ziekenhuis ontvangen. Ze besluit om Étienne te verlaten, pakt haar tas en vertrekt nog dezelfde avond. Nadat ook Rémi en Johar naar huis zijn, is Étienne alleen met zijn zelfbeklag over de ondankbare Claudia: “Ze had een interessante, beschaafde, rijke vrouw kunnen worden. Hij zou Claudia willen bellen om zijn woede uit te schreeuwen. (…) Claudia is vervangbaar en zal vervangen worden, besluit Étienne. (…) Étienne behoort niet tot het soort mensen dat gevoelig is voor spijt. Hij behoort tot de klasse die de hele wereld in hun schoot geworpen krijgt.”

Onderweg naar huis bekent Rémi aan Johar zijn nieuwe liefde. Johar bekent dat zij naar Tunesië vertrekt om zich in haar familieachtergrond te verdiepen in plaats van directeur te worden van het grote fusiebedrijf.
