I'm not fussed about loose lead walking, but I enjoyed the Predation and Recall books so much I wanted to see what was in this one.

It continues to run true in giving information in an easily accessible and understood format. More upfront context and theory in this book than the others, especially in relation to breed-specific challenges and how they present in loose lead walking. I especially appreciated the focus on environment and genetics e.g. gundogs struggling in the change of the season as prey and their tracks become more present.

I like how the actual practical components were split into four puzzles with games against each: 1 meeting needs, 2 managing arousal, 3 the basic skills to practice, and 4 how to steadily increase difficulty/moving the new skills into the real world.

I especially enjoyed the Lowering Arousal Prep Games as they match well with acclimatisation techniques for dog sports competitions.

I liked that each training game had a clear explanation of the purpose of the game, what you need, steps to play the game, a troubleshooting section and finally - delightful illustrated infographics and flowcharts of each game.

I adore the illustrated infographics, I cannot wait to share these in our obedience club newsletter to give people new training games to help them learn. They are very simple, only a few steps, and not too complicated. So it will be easy for them to take home and review later when they are not busy focussing on their dogs in the moment!

I gave this a four star, as I felt the book was lacking on lead-handling troubleshooting. The smiling lead method (not a method I use) puts a lot of responsibility on the dog to be the one to ensure constant looseness. When pulling occurs the advice is nearly always to stop and start over (with a troubleshooting section on self-evaluating the environment and make it easier). I would have liked it to go more into the ways the lead can be shortened/lengthened in response to sudden arousal when we misjudge the environment (as owners of high drive high energy hunting dogs). Although I recognise is this a book specifically about loose lead walking for 2m leads and not a book on long line walking or other methods of walking. I also would have liked more information on scaffolding and choosing environments for success. This section was a bit sparse.

Unrelated to the four star:
I also noticed a few formatting and spelling errors in the book. e.g. f instead of If. ThisThisThis instead of This.

I also wasn't keen about the "preview" text for Hunting Together and a few other advertisements for the other books. There was a lovely illustrated flowchart that explained the purpose of each of the books in the series and I don't see why we needed more than that.

So, minor stuff mostly.

* i prefer the lead walking to maintain constant light tension with each other so the dogs and i can read each other's position without constantly looking at each other or running risk of tripping over a lead, similar to lead tension in bikejoring/sledding when in movement but not pulling.

loose lead walking

I loved this book, now to put in practice what I’ve just read. We’ve got a long way to go but I’m looking forward to loose lead walking instead of my spaniel pulling all the time. No more sore shoulders.
