If you're a fan of Sherlock Holmes, you’re in for a treat with William Todd’s collection. Todd, who started his writing career with gothic horror, has seamlessly transitioned into the world of Sherlock Holmes with this collection of five short stories. His deep love for the character and the genre is evident on every page, making this a must-read for both longtime fans and newcomers alike.

William Todd isn’t new to the writing scene; he’s been honing his craft for over twenty years, starting with gothic horror before diving into Sherlock Holmes pastiches. His passion for Holmes led him to contribute to MX Publishing's "New Sherlock Holmes Stories," and his latest work continues to showcase his respect for the original material while bringing something fresh to the table.

The collection offers five short stories, each featuring Holmes and Watson as they navigate complex mysteries filled with twists and turns. Todd stays true to the classic Holmes formula—there’s no shortage of intricate plots, cryptic clues, and the kind of climactic reveals that make you want to revisit the story as soon as you finish it. What sets these stories apart is Todd’s ability to inject new life into familiar scenarios, making them feel both nostalgic and innovative.

Todd’s writing style is both an homage to Conan Doyle and a showcase of his unique voice. His prose is sharp and descriptive, capturing the foggy streets of London with an atmospheric touch. But where he truly excels is in his characterization of Holmes. Todd manages to keep Holmes' intellectual brilliance intact while also exploring a more playful, cheeky side of the detective—something that adds a refreshing twist to the stories.

Holmes and Watson are as compelling as ever under Todd’s pen. Holmes is depicted with the sharpness and wit you’d expect, but Todd adds layers to his personality, making him feel more human and relatable. The themes of loyalty, justice, and truth are deeply embedded in the narrative, resonating with the moral fabric of the original stories while also bringing in contemporary relevance.

Each story in this collection is tightly woven, with a clear structure that keeps you engaged from start to finish. The pacing is spot-on, and Todd’s ability to build suspense is impressive. The final story in particular stands out for its intricate plot and satisfying resolution, leaving you with that classic “aha!” moment that every good mystery should deliver.

Todd’s stories explore timeless themes of justice, loyalty, and the relentless pursuit of truth, much like the original Holmes tales. However, he also introduces modern nuances, making the stories resonate with today’s readers. There’s an underlying message about the complexity of human nature and the moral dilemmas that often accompany the pursuit of justice.

Reading Todd’s collection is like revisiting an old friend—you feel comforted by the familiarity but excited by the new twists. There are moments of tension, surprise, and even humor that make the stories emotionally engaging. The balance between suspense and lighter moments adds depth to the reading experience.

One of the collection’s biggest strengths is how it balances the old with the new. Todd respects the source material but isn’t afraid to take creative risks, such as showing Holmes’ more playful side. The vivid descriptions, sharp dialogue, and well-crafted plots make this a standout in the world of Sherlock Holmes pastiches.

While the collection is strong overall, some readers might find the dialogue a bit too formal at times. Though it fits the period, there are moments where it can feel a bit stiff, potentially pulling you out of the story. It’s a minor quibble, but something that might be refined in future works.

Personally, I loved how Todd managed to breathe new life into the world of Sherlock Holmes. His stories felt like a comfortable return to familiar territory, but with enough originality to keep things exciting. The final story, in particular, left a lasting impression, and I’m already looking forward to what Todd will write next.

In conclusion, William Todd’s Sherlock Holmes collection is a brilliant addition to the detective genre. It’s a well-crafted, engaging, and thoroughly enjoyable read that offers something for both die-hard Holmes fans and those new to the character. With its blend of classic elements and fresh perspectives, this collection is a must-read. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good mystery.

I’ve only read a few Sherlock Holmes books, but every one of them has impressed me greatly. I’m always amazed by how Sherlock’s mind works and by his sharp focus on solving each case.

Many times, I used to forget that Sherlock is a character and not a real person, as he always feels so real in all the books. I was really excited to pick this book up and it met my expectations.

I highly recommend this collection to anyone who loves detective stories or is looking for a fresh twist on the classic Sherlock Holmes tales. As a fan, I found it engaging, with clever mysteries that kept me hooked from start to finish.

The collection is full of complex plots and enigmatic clues that keep you intrigued. Each story builds up to dramatic revelations that are both unexpected and fulfilling. Well done Sherlock Holmes, with intriguing cases and solid characterization. I don't tend to like long form Sherlock stories, they usually pad out the case and weaken his abilities just to make it last longer, while the short stories are punchy and make Holmes seem brilliant.

These stories tend to cover topics that were too sensitive or shocking for Victorian reader sensibilities, but were a real issue at the time such as child trafficking. And often there is more menace than the canon stories, genuine danger for the pair.

Most excellent

The keys to writing a great ACD pastiche includes re-creating the Victorian ambience, staying true to the original characters, and creating a worthy mystery. Many can do some but not all. In this 5 story collection, Mr Todd achieves them all. if you’re a fan of ACD, you will love this book.

Sherlock yet not

OK, the stories good. Good enough to overlook the not good. The wring of dialog awful. Like using a thesaurus to find words it seemed. Very stilted verbiage and storytelling
Good stories.

Good addition to the “canon” involving the usual players and crafty Holmes solutions. A comfortable and gratifying read without too much drama.
