Daniel and Lea have developed the ability to travel in time. Unsure what do to with their new ability, they decide to alter the past to make the world a better place... and make a profit along the way.
Doing so, they inadvertently change the course of human history. Now, people who never should have existed are extremely powerful, and the effects of four global wars have contaminated the planet.
What Daniel and Lea don't know is that four time travelers from the future have been genetically modified and sent back in time, in order to prevent the reckless changes they've done to the timeline.
But in their new, altered reality, one powerful nation exists, and its leaders are prepared to protect their interests - no matter the cost.
I grew up in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and moved to Michigan in 1988 to attend Davenport University’s Paramedic school. I reside in Kent City, Michigan, with my wife of 32 years. We have an adult son and daughter who both have graduated college and live out of town. I am a retired Firefighter/Paramedic who works full-time in Information Systems for a major West Michigan company. In my off time, I enjoy traveling to unique places, family time, and my two dogs, who keep life fun.
Fascinating story about time-travel paradoxes but it's missing heart. I really loved the storyline and all the thought that went into time travel issues. But this novel reads like a scientific report with very little emotion. At first I thought this was an intentional writing style because an alien race were the narrators but even as we came to Earth and followed a few teenagers through some intense situations their emotions were reported as if 2 steps removed.
Story=5 stars, writing style=3 stars. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Much better than the last book I read by Coates (Alternate Purpose). While some of the dialogue is still stilted and awkward here, and character observations are rather robotic, it's absolutely better than the prior book.
The plot here was interesting, moved along quickly, and overall this was a fun read, and better than previous work I've read by the author. I do take issue with a few items that made no sense though, and in my opinion harmed the story to the point that you need to actively avoid critical thinking to still enjoy the book (flagging spoilers):
I dunno, like I said, fun, light read, but some odd quirks that are left unexplained and cause the story to not really add up. I think maybe this author should make better notes on his timelines, or maybe avoid time travel in future books.
OMG! What a scary ride through a world changed by irresponsible time travel. In the end the world is, let’s say, reset on its proper trajectory by a small group of teenagers, but it’s really what made their mission necessary that is truly terrifying. I may be paraphrasing a bit here; but you know the expression about “the road to hell being paved with good intentions” right? Well, Lea and Daniel who developed the technology to time travel are going broke, so their intention to travel back in time may have been with “good intentions,” but the consequences are quite catastrophic. When it came right down to it though, their true motivation was really greed, as far as I’m concerned. Well, that’s the way a saw it anyway. Unfortunately, those teenagers are not the only ones out there who have a stake in what Daniel and Lea did to change the timeline, and they do not want the proper sequence of history to be put to rights. I thought this author did a fantastic job with this story, and with the way that what might seem to be a relatively inconsequential change could have far reaching and unpredictable consequences. The characters are all well written, and while time travel may not be very realistic, these characters were very pragmatic, and I enjoyed them all. Exciting, and sometimes bloody, this is a violent time travel adventure that I had a tough time putting down and didn’t want to end. Bottom line for me: It may be fun to imagine what you would say to your younger, stubborn self that could change your current circumstances, whether good or bad if you are currently unhappy with them, the true ramifications of a tiny past event change might have devastating repercussions that are in no way predictable. Bottom line, I don’t know about anyone else, but I don’t think I would ever truly want to change my past.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
If you've ever wondered what would have happened if the Star Trek folks had violated the Prime Directive with impunity, you will likely enjoy "Shattered Time" by Christopher Coates. Our main characters are three genetically-altered teens: Ben, Megan, and Kyle. Their mission is to fix the mess that a couple of enterprising business people have made.
Lea and Dan of L&D Research have introduced products and concepts to cultures that were years away from being ready to develop them themselves. And while that might sound like a generous thing to do, the results were anything but.
Coates has written a thrilling story. The characters are well-developed and the teens seem like nice, normal kids-- except for the unique superpower each one has. The multiple timelines are fun to read.
I recommend "Shattered Time." It's a page-turner and it certainly kept me on pins and needles throughout.
Thank you to Hidden Gems for letting me read this book. This is my honest review.
what a truly unique book. lovers of sci-fi, time travel, alternative history can all find stuff to love here. the two sets of characters show some growth, with enough world building through in to satisfy me. ive seen some reviews saying it was too science-y or dense in prose but I found this book a breeze to read often times having trouble stopping reading. i genuinely was concerned for characters safety in parts.
slight spoilers: the book has intersperstials set on an alien world, the first chunk of the book is pure time travel and paradoxes, with the rest (and majority of the book) read like an alternative history sci-fi with some time travel added in. i enjoyed these sections much much more.
This is a unique type of time travel adventure there is a central storyline that is used in many other time travel novels and that is when people travel to the past their actions can alter the future and this one is a huge example of that. Three teenagers with links to aliens from the future are tasked with stopping the the alternate timeline and that's when the fun begins A very interesting story I highly recommend this book
Time travel books often bring up the issue of how tinkering with time travel can cause massive changes in the time line through unintentional actions, but Mr. Coates plunges us into a world where these changes are made intentionally! Shattered time shows us how drastically different our world could be in anyone ever thought about tinkering with time, even with the best of intentions! Let that be a warning to all future time travelers out there!
One of the most engaging Sci-Fi books I have ever read. This is truly made for physics and especially astronomy lovers. Honestly, The whole plot takes you to another world. Infact, I completed the book in one sitting! Thanks to Coates for providing me this opportunity to read your book, and I am happy to volunteer to provide this review.
They discover they can time travel so they go back to change the future for the better. Unfortunately they make it worst and now they need to live with it. Will they try again? Will it get worse if they do? What will they do now? See what will happen next I received an advance copy from hidden gems and I want to review
It was an interesting time travel story illustrating the potential repercussions of changing the past. The suspense was slow in developing and the characters were pretty thin so I nearly stopped reading before the pace picked up. It turned out to be an okay read, albeit not one where the ending was hard to foresee.
This was a great time travel novel….but when modern technology is transported back to earlier times everything changes the future they knew. The only hope to correct the timeline is four teenagers from different parts of the world, genetically enhanced by an alien nation.

Great premise. I love a clever time travel. Smartly answers all the questions that go along with time travel and changing history. I was sad to see it end.
This book mainly held my interest, and had some interesting twists and turns.
It pits a kingdom in Africa on an alternate timeline and two inventors of a time-travel device looking to both profit financially and to "make the world a better place" against three teenagers empowered by aliens to stop them!
It's worth reading in my opinion, but not up there with my favorite time-travel novels.
