Drawing on contemporaneous accounts of the First World War from Canada and the United States, freelance journalist Melina Druga offers readers an insightful exploration of early-20th-century attitudes toward the conflict, in A Tale of Two Nations: Canada, U.S. and WWI.

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie in 1914 Sarajevo plunged the globe into a massive war — one that would completely reorganize life as we once knew it. Little more than a month after the Austro-Hungarian heir’s death, Great Britain formally joined the fray with a declaration of war against Germany. And, far across the Atlantic, the costs of international engagement weighed heavily on two neighboring countries.

On the surface, the United States’ and Canada’s predominant viewpoints on the war served only to magnify pre-existing tensions between the nations. Yet news reporting from either side of the U.S.-Canadian border reveals deeply divided reactions among public officials and private citizens alike. Despite the country’s longstanding commitment to neutrality, many major U.S. newspapers sang profiteering’s praises. In the north, Canadian reporting divided along party lines as debates raged over whether the nation should fight alongside Great Britain or remain neutral in the face of British involvement.

1914 is the first installment of the A Tale of Two Nations series.

Stories from behind the spotlight — rock star romances that are honest, passionate, and deeply human.

Melina Druga writes heartfelt stories about love, resilience, and the ties that connect us all. Best known for her contemporary rock star romances, she brings authenticity and emotional depth to a world often clouded by stereotypes — crafting stories that reflect the realities of being rock stars and the women who love them.

Her novels blend passion and vulnerability, exploring the complexities of love, identity, and second chances. Each book invites readers into the lives of characters who are flawed, hopeful, and achingly human, reminding us that even in the spotlight, the heart tells the truest story.

Earlier in her career, Melina explored historical fiction and nonfiction, and her love of the past continues to shape the emotional depth and texture of her writing.

When she’s not writing, Melina can often be found listening to music, exercising or watching musicians’ interviews. She believes stories, like songs, have the power to heal, inspire and remind us that love, in all forms, is worth the journey.

With this volume begins a series of books with a style similar to a news dossier. It helps the reader, in an orderly and reliable way, to know a common past lived in the First World War, through the events reported by newspapers in Canada and the United States. Knowing the beginning of the War and the first impressions of those who were involved, helps to understand them.

Despite being a United States war history buff and having an emphasis in history, I actually don’t know that much about World War I. That’s why Melina Druga’s coverage of it in 1914 was such a gem to me. Druga’s writing is both informative and flows well spanning between the United States and Canada at the start of The Great War. I’m looking forward to delving into more of Druga’s works and recommend 1914 to any history buffs out there like me!

Interesting Chronicle of The shot heard around the world!

What an interesting historical journey in 1914 by Melina Druga. Druga is a freelance journalist and from the details in this book, also a historian. Her research and knowledge tell the story of "The Shot Heard around the world." As any one who is familar with WWI history and its start of the "war to end all wars" (which we know isn't true, but they thought it was. Archduke Franz Ferdinan was assassinated by Princip, a Slavic Nationalist, and that starts the war, bringing in countries from all over the world, each on different sides. The story is told through journalism, and how the media (mainly newspapers back then) told the story to the public. This is part one of the series. I am a definite fan of this author! Druga is a magnificent author and writer, and tells the story so well. Even when you know how it's going to end, the use of the media format to tell the story, and her writing skills, makes you think, and get the perspective of what the world thought of the War back then, and how they lived. I look forward to reading part 2, 1915. This author not only tells the story but shows it with words as well. Entertaining and educational. Wonderfully told. 1914 is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review.
