My Perfect Husband

Rate this book
My sister is dead. Did I marry her killer?

The moment I first gazed into Alex's soulful gray eyes, I knew I'd met the man I wanted to spend my life with.

When my beloved sister vanished, Alex put up posters and wiped away my tears after bad dreams. He put me back together, and I'm so glad I married such a good man.

But when police find my darling sister dead and pull a crumpled photo from her pocket, my world falls apart. In the faded image, I see my husband's familiar face smiling back at me, his arm around my sweet sister.

Alex told me they'd never met. The picture was taken in the café where she was last seen. So why was he with her the day she died? And now I've uncovered the truth, I wonder if I'm next...

If The Housemaid, The Wife Between Us or The Woman in the Window had you totally gripped until late at night, then you'll love this utterly unputdownable psychological thriller from Amazon charts bestseller Georgina Cross.

Genre ~ domestic mystery
Setting ~ Illinois & Louisiana
Publication date ~ May 16, 2024
Page Count ~ 315 (p+ 35 chapters)
Audio length ~ 8 hours 17 minutes
Narrator ~ Stephanie Cannon
POV ~ single 1st, present tense
Featuring ~ spouses with missing siblings, dual timeline, secrets

Lauren's sister, Ellie, has been missing for years. So has her husband, Alex's, brother, Clive. When Ellie's body has been found there is a picture in her pocket of her, Clive and Alex. Does Alex know more about Ellie's disappearance than he's lead Lauren to believe? Does she?

I did enjoy this one, but after all the build up to what really happened to Ellie I was a bit let down with the outcome. It was both super fast paced and draggy at times. I wouldn't really consider it a thriller, more of a domestic mystery, since the disappearances happened so long ago. I liked the ending, but I don't think it will be for everyone.

Narration notes:
Stephanie did a really good job.

I downloaded this from Kindle Unlimited after being impressed by the many glowing reviews. I normally love domestic drama but I was disappointed here even though The Perfect Husband fit the category.

I felt like this was an attempt by the author to throw her hat into the ring of a popular trope favored by readers similar to me. However, the field is already dominated by mediocre books and this was another of those in my opinion.

In fact, I thought this was worse because the premise appeared promising and could have been a good story. Instead, it seemed empty despite copious prose with the majority being “telling” rather than “showing”. Not to mention the main character’s unabating inner drama and over wrought thoughts.

Other readers loved this but it wasn’t for me

Georgina Cross does it again! This thriller is described as unputdownable and I can confirm that is definitely true. Missing siblings, a suspicious husband, and countless secrets combined to create a thriller that hooked me immediately. I couldn't get to the shocking conclusion fast enough. The final twists left me shaken. The plot is fast-paced and masterfully constructed with twists and turns throughout this original, page-turner! I look forward to reading more from Georgina Cross. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for my copy.

Okay, I was reading this book thinking I knew what was going to happen but then there was a huge shift midway through that I didn’t expect! There were some good red herrings and twists and I loved that the characters were morally grey. Makes you think about just how well you know someone and what secrets they could be hiding!

The story was a quick, easy read and the pacing was good. The ending was left a bit open-ended which I am not a huge fan of but the build up to it was satisfying. The New Orleans setting was a good one as I could envision the streets that the characters walked along. Made me feel part of the story.

That was an afternoon well spent. I raced through My Perfect husband in one sitting. It's a story with so many twists it just needs to be read. I loved the New Orleans setting, the author firmly placing the reader in the streets with her descriptions of the area. I found myself second-guessing everything I read at one time or another, and the ending was perfect.

12 years after her sister Ellie went missing, Lauren gets the phone call that she has been dreading. Her remains have been found, and there were some familiar faces in the photos found with the body. That is all you need to know. At under 300 pages, you will fly through this book.

"I stare at my husband and wonder which one of us will confess first."

First of all, thank you Netgalley and Georgina Cross for the arc!
Coming to the book, the title fascinated me so much, and the description, my God, it's been so long since I have read a thriller, especially a good one and this lived up to every mark of mine. This is a quick read and raced through this in like 2 days. The writing was unique simple yet with such depth of sentences. For a long time, I craved this good writing and the author stayed up the expectations. This is my first book by the author, and I'm quite impressed and will surely read her other books.

"Denial can make you believe almost anything. Hope can also.
And so can those whispers in your ear."

The story revolves around the disappearance of Lauren's sister, Ellie who disappeared around 12 years ago. The story mostly goes for the present point, few times in the book, we will see glimpses of the past as well. The past references are perfectly situated around the story line of the present and as the story progresses, it becomes more clear. The characters, Lauren and her husband, Alex are the main leads and the author has justified both of them. It might seem Alex got a little spotlight, but in the latter half of the book, it is proven wrong.

" “I always knew you were the one who did it,” Dad says. “That day, the
lies you girls told. You can own up to it now.” "

Without giving much away, while the climax is narrated, you get an idea of what is going to happen a bit or so, but the before and aftermath are more surprising and more interesting to read about. Some revelations are big and some are not quite important. But the characters, especially Alex is very well written. The end is spectacular, could not ask for any other ending, as the one already is fitting and leaves the reader an open ending like some other questions unanswered.

"Because I’m buying time—that’s what this is. I know this instinctually. I
don’t want to go to this uncharted territory just yet."

I would recommend it to people who love thrillers, disappearances, and murder mysteries, and a quick and short read.

"and the not
knowing is often the cruelest of all."

This was a fast paced, entertaining popcorn thriller. Some fun twists and it kept me guessing. I went with the audiobook which was narrated by Stephanie Cannon and it was well done.

Lauren's sister disappeared many years ago. Her husband has helped through the grief of it. When the police find her sister's body, there is a faded picture in her pocket. Lauren's husband is in the picture with his arm around her sister. Why was he with her before her death?! What does her husband know about her sister's death? If you enjoy Freida McFadden, then I definitely think you'll also enjoy this one!

Out May 16.

"My Perfect Husband" is a mystery thriller by Georgina Cross. It is a very quick read or listen. I didn't want to stop listening to this one. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Stephanie Cannon. She did a great job with the voices!

Lauren's sister, Ellie, has been missing for years. Her husband, Alex, has been missing his brother, Clive, for many years also. Lauren keeps her phone on with the hopes of finding out where her sister is. She finally gets the call. Any more info would spoil the book.

It’s really hard to give an honest review for this book without spoilers. It started off as a typical domestic suspense that had potential to make a good story. The story is told through Lauren‘s point of view. Her sister went missing 12 years ago and she’s never given up hope finding her. She wakes up to news that her sister’s body has been found and she is requested to come to New Orleans. Lauren’s husband, Alex, has been the perfect husband up until this point. They met and bonded over both having missing siblings. But the detective shares information that destroys Lauren trust in her husband. The story continues with Lauren and Alex going to New Orleans. Throughout the book the reader watches as Lauren is tormented with the unknown as she chases down clues and answers.

I found the writing very repetitive and simple which I can usually set aside, especially when it’s in the first person perspective of a character, but this felt boring and unnecessary at time. For the most part it was an average read for me, but the ending and “twists” really ruined it for me. Getting to the end left me frustrated and annoyed. The revelation made me feel tricked. I am a firm believer that if the information comes out of absolutely nowhere and almost a whole new storyline then it’s not a twist. I’d rather read a well written book where I have the eventual twist figured out, than read a book that goes out of its way to ensure there’s no way to guess the twist. There’s absolutely no way, even if I try really hard to suspend belief, that the story would take place. And I’m not even focused on the ending or the twist. I mean, just in general, the fact that Lauren and Alex: 1. ever met 2. they would ever ever ever get married 3. that either/both of them would be able to go about as normal for 12 years knowing what we know by the end. Just no. None of this made sense.

My perfect husband by Georgina Cross I listen to the audiobook which was narrated by Stephanie Cannon. In the book we meet Lauren who is married to Alex and has been for years she is dealing with an aging father who lives in a retirement home and having met at a group for morning the missing her and her husband have missing siblings. On this day right after waking up she gets a call from the NOPD. New Orleans is where her sister went missing and so she dreads answering it and when she does it’s everything she feared they found her sister Ellie’s body. As if that news wasn’t astounding enough the detective center pictures found in her sister‘s jacket and it’s a photo of her husband and another man. Let me just say despite Stephanie cannons very young sounding voice I really like her character distinction and I am amazed that such a sweet voice can do the men so well. As far as the story goes I feel like this book like many others these days is the equivalent to Clickbait. You read the story and go through all the monotonous inner thoughts of Lauren and you wait for the big reveal only to wonder where the hell did that ending come from? I cannot stand in a book when the ending doesn’t match anything prior in the story and I feel that is exactly what happened with this one. Lauren nor her husband Alex are good people and not to have one person to root for as my first step and knowing I may not like the book. So irregardless of great narration I found the book especially Lawrence inner thoughts and her high emotional reaction to be too over-the-top repetitive and ridiculous I mean when leaving after visiting her dad she almost collapsed due to thinking about her sister being missing and then she goes and gets in her car and is distracted while driving because she is just overwhelmed with emotions. I think I am going to steer clear of Georgina Cross‘s books nothing infuriates me more than feeling like I have been tricked into reading a book but I felt at the end of this book that’s exactly what happened instead of getting a good thriller I got a sophomoric attempt at one. I get suspending belief and all that but you would have to live in La La Land to think this book is a good one.. I still gave it two stars due to the great narration in the So-so story but do listen at your own risk. I want to thank BookOuchur audio for my free arc copy via NetGalley. Please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

Talk about twists and turns aplenty! This book had me racing through and turning the page to find out what happened.

I really enjoyed the new Orleans setting and found the storyline pretty fast paced. The ending was satisfying if not a little open ended. At just under 300 pages it’s a quick, entertaining thriller.

Many thanks to Bookouture audio for the ALC. The audio narration by Stephanie Cannon was highly entertaining and easy to listen to.

Twelve years ago, Lauren's sister Ellie went missing in New Orleans. All this time, Lauren has been searching for her sister, trying to find out what happened to her. Lauren soon meets and marries Alex, whose brother Clive also disappeared. When her body is discovered, police show photos that were on Ellies body; photos showing Ellie with Alex and Clive taken the day she died. Alex had never told anyone he knew Ellie, and Lauren travels to New Orleans to find out if Alex killed her sister. But Alex isn't the only one keeping secrets.
This was such an amazing thriller. It was a fast-paced read with twists at every turn. I couldn't put it down once I started and I was kept guessing throughout. This was my first from this author but I can't wait to read more.

Review for 'My Perfect Husband' by Georgina Cross

Wow!! WTAF?!? JUST WOW!!!! Where do I even begin? What an absolutely gripping, intense psychological thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat, flying through the pages and full of suspense!! Filled with twists, turns, red herrings, lies, family, secrets, shocks and explosive twists you won't see coming!!! I have read hundreds of books and this has been the one that has shocked me the most this year and it has definitely hit my top 3 biggest twists of all time!!! I WAS absolutely hooked from beginning to end and just could not put it down. I started it in the morning and couldn't put it down until 2am. Georgina's writing and Stephanie's narration of this fabulous book kept me wanting, no needing, more!! Georgina is a fantastic storyteller and I have loved each and every one of her books and how she comes up with unique storylines and characters for each and every one of them! She draws you in and keeps you hooked from the very first sentence to the very last page! When the big reveal came my mind was absolutely blown away which I loved!! I read the audio version of this book which is narrated by the absolutely fantastic Stephanie Cannon. I have listened to several books narrated by Stephanie and she does an absolutely amazing job of really portraying the characters feelings and emotions every step of the way helping to bring the story to life!! I just cannot wait to see what Georgina comes up with next!!

Do not even attempt to start this until you have cleared your schedules as you will not be able to put it down!!!

The characters were strong and realistic and I was completely invested in them from beginning to end. Georgina's emotive descriptions and Stephanie's fantastic narration really do work perfectly together to ensure the characters come to life in front of you and it feels like you are right next to them throughout the book feeling and seeing everything that they are. It is also one of those fantastic books where you question yourself about the characters constantly not knowing whether you believe them or not and still i was shocked by the ending!

Congratulations Georgina on an absolutely explosive page turner!!! Also a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS on writing a book that has shocked me the most this year!!! I read about 30 plus books a month so this is no easy feat but you managed it!!! This is exactly why you are one of my favourite authors!!! Here's to your next success!!! 🥂

Overall a mind blowing, suspense filled psychological page turning thriller with an explosive ending you WILL NEVER SEE COMING!!!

This was my first read from Georgina Cross given to me from NetGalley and I love her writing style.

First off I have to say I live in Louisiana and the description of walking through New Orleans was so spot on. I felt like I was just walking through. I could hear it. I could smell it. I could see it. Phenomenal!!

In some parts of this book it was a bit slow but then in some parts it was more fast paced.

The twist I did not see coming! I was thinking I had it figured out but I was way off. Very well written!

Well Done!

The story begins immediately when Lauren is told her missing sister has been found dead

I enjoyed the fast pace and Lauren’s recollections which span from her childhood, time with her sister, when her sister went missing, and later when she met Alex

The writing flows and had an interesting style. Lauren has a lot of thoughts - a lot - some are recollections but the majority are “what ifs” and “whys”. She also presumes to know things and imagines how they played out…. “the public will say….. ” “my sister would have smiled…”

This technique didn’t require any characters, because Lauren presumed all the questions and answers (regardless of truth)….

The action speeds up in the second half of the book when we start getting facts and meeting more people and it slowly comes together

I really liked the reveal (best thing about the book) but didn’t like the cliffhanger ending, never a fan of those

The audiobook was well narrated and this was a very easy read, which I’d recommend as a light, domestic thriller

This is a high quality quick listen thriller.
A descrptive setting throughoutthe story. The plot deals with a phone call many years after her sister went missing that turns their world upside down as secrets are revealed. I loved the way the main secret was hibted at by reliving the past over multiple time lines. I did guess the teist but it was so entertaining and the additional characters gave the story grounding. I would like to have more of the husbands perspective . I wanted more from the ending. It was very enjoyable. The characters past enhanced the plot .it was a bit unbelievable in places and the reaction of the husband towards the end seemed too werk.
A cracking listen. Thanks to netgallery and publisher and author and narrator

Everyone at THE PULSE is raving about My Perfect Husband and the hype is certainly real. I couldn't put this one down. It was filled with surprises, a setting that felt like a character in and of itself, and a mystery that kept me guessing.

I loved the New Orleans scenery and setting, Lauren and Ellie's backstories, and the parallels between Lauren and Alex and their missing siblings.

The dual timelines worked so well here and really made it hard for me to figure out what was going on and who I could trust! The pacing was spot on - it kept me flipping pages and needing to know what would happen next.

The characters were well developed and at some point, I think I suspected every single person of something!

Overall, this was a really fun read that I thoroughly enjoyed. I can't wait to check out more by Cross.

Lauren has been grief stricken since the disappearance of her younger sister, Ellie. Twelve years ago, Ellie attended a concert for work, and she was never seen again. In the midst of searching for her sister, Lauren met Alex. His brother, Clive, also disappeared twelve years ago. The experience of losing a sibling created a bond between Lauren and Alex. They eventually got married.

Suddenly, Lauren receives a call from the New Orleans Police Department saying they have found her sister’s remains. Lauren is overcome with sadness because it confirms Ellie is dead. To add insult to injury, a photo is found in Ellie’s pocket. Lauren views the photo, and she is in shock when she sees who’s in the photo with Ellie.

As more details are revealed about Ellie’s disappearance, more secrets are exposed. Was Alex and Lauren losing their siblings at the same time truly a coincidence, or are the disappearances connected?

Lauren finally gets the call she’s anticipated for the last 12 years.. news about her missing sister, Ellie.
But now she’s trying to figure out why there is a picture of her husband in Ellie’s pocket? When she didn’t meet him until the year after she went missing?

Full of mystery and suspense! A fast paced, fun read that will keep you guessing! I had many guesses and I was wrong about them all! I love books that are a whodunnit and you don’t know who to trust, and this gave me everything I would want and expect in that type of book! Definitely recommend!

_______

Lauren has never gotten over the disappearance of her sister Ellie from twelve years ago. She is able to share her grief with her husband Alex whom she met at a support group. Alex can understand because he lost his brother. Lauren’s marriage is suddenly threatened when police find her sister’s body. A picture is found in Ellie’s pocket of her, a strange man, and Alex. Alex swore to Lauren he didn’t know Ellie. What else did he lie about?

It’s clear right from the beginning that Alex lied, but what isn’t clear is why or exactly what happened to Ellie. Lauren travels to New Orleans (where Ellie went missing) to speak with the detective on her case. Lauren reminisces a lot about Ellie and specifically a traumatic event in the sisters’ lives that bonded them. My favorite part were the scenes from the past while getting to know the sisters. Stephanie Cannon’s narration of the younger version of the sisters was excellent. She also did a great job with the male voices, though a New Orleans accent for the detective would’ve taken the audio up a notch.

The Perfect Husband is a light suspense drama with unfolding secrets. Some parts felt overly descriptive but I enjoyed the slow reveal of the story, and the immersive New Orleans setting. If you like domestic turmoil mixed with secrets, lies and not knowing who to trust, then this is for you!

The potential to make this book amazing was missed with this one. Two people who siblings have both been missing for years. This could have been a twisted and suspense driven, instead there is some slight foreshadowing in the first few chapters & a disappointing ending. 90% of this novel was so boring it isn't worth reading

This audiobook was made available for me to listen to and review by Georgina Cross, Bookouture Audio, and NetGalley.

The narrator is Stephanie Cannon. Her voice is emotive and soothing. Her tone and inflection alter for other characters, helping the listener to keep track of who is speaking to Lauren.

The novel opens with Lauren receiving a call from the New Orleans, LA police department. Her sister has been found after 12 years, and her body was located in an abandoned house undergoing renovation. The surprise for Lauren is that Ellie died with a picture of Lauren's husband, Alex, and his missing brother, Clive, in her pocket. Alex never told Lauren that he had met her sister. Lauren has been married to Alex for years. She met him at a grief-share program for folks with missing family or loved ones. Lauren has been looking for her slightly younger sister, Ellie, and Alex has been looking for his brother, Clive.

Ellie was a student at Loyola University, where she worked as a reporter covering bands that played at local venues for her university paper. She rented with her best friend, Carmen, from an older couple, The Broussards, and was last seen at a concert with coworker Rachel. Lauren heads to NOLA to search all of these places and speak to people attached to these places in her search for what happened to her sister and how Alex could possibly be involved. Lauren doesn't know who to trust, and neither does the reader. What a twisty ride!

My Perfect Husband
By Georgina Cross

2 stars ⭐️ ⭐️

The synopsis of this book sounded so promising and it had some of my favourite tropes such as unreliable narrator and dual time line however I was so disappointed pretty much from start to finish.

I did enjoy the initial twist at the beginning of the book but apart from that the storyline felt stale and there was no plot at all until about 40% in then it fell flat again until 80% but by that time I was so bored and disconnected that I just didn’t care anymore.

I’m all for descriptive writing but I felt the book could have been reduced by at least 100 pages just with the amount of excessive description of the surroundings which I felt was unnecessary and dragged it out just to make up the word count.

The storyline did remind me very slightly of ‘Pretty Girls’ by Karin Slaughter so if you loved that book then you may enjoy this one too!

Lauren and Alex are a happy couple living in Illinois. Alex is the perfect husband- he is always thinking of his wife, bringing her coffee in her favorite mug, buying her flowers, and most importantly, he is supportive. He has been there for Lauren since her sister went missing 12 years ago. Despite having a younger brother who also went missing, Alex has always put Lauren and her search for her younger sister before himself.
One day, Lauren gets a call from New Orleans police department, saying they've found her sister's body. Along with the body, they also find some pictures that link Lauren's husband to her sister. But how can this be if Alex has never met Ellie?
My Perfect Husband is a suspenseful read, great if you want a quick, fast-paced thrill! The twists are pretty good, however, it does take a while to get there. There seems to be a lot of repetition, and the story is a little drawn out. By the end, I wasn't left as wowed as I thought I'd be, especially for a thriller with a premise as this one. It just felt a bit flat to me, although I'm sure some will love it!

Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture, and Georgina Cross for this wonderful ARC!

If @thrillerbookloversthepulse crew recommends it, you know it’s going to be hot! Georgina’s One Night was one of my favorite thrillers of 2023 so I knew I had to read her latest, My Perfect Husband.

After missing for 12 years, Lauren’s younger sister Ellie is found dead with an unexpected photo on her - in it is Lauren’s husband Alex. Secrets, lies, lots of potential suspects and at the heart of it all, New Orleans.

I love popcorn thrillers and this one delivered. And though I enjoyed the journey of all puzzle pieces sliding in together, for me the star of the show was the city itself. I wanted to crawl into the book and taste the food and hear the music and experience everything Ellie loved about living in New Orleans.

If you’re looking for a character driven suspense that will keep you turning pages, this is definitely a book for you!

A big thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for my ARC in exchange for an honest review!
