Dayton is a troubled child who doesn’t fit in with other children. Despite this, his mother does everything she can to provide him with a good life. But she can’t make a girl love him.
And, as Dayton grows up, his resentment toward women for their lack of attention grows.
When he discovers incel forums online, he becomes submerged in a world of people who not only share his resentment, but encourage him to act on his beliefs that are becoming more and more extreme.
With the support of his online friends, he decides it’s time to make society pay for what it’s done to him.
As events spiral toward the day of murder and mayhem he has planned, his mother begins to realise that, regardless of how much love she gives him, it might not be enough.
Can she prevent his day of reckoning? Or will the world pay the price for the person he’s become?
This is the new psychological thriller from the master of horror, Rick Wood. Discover the extent of the emerging incel threat in this shocking book inspired by real life accounts – but beware, once you know the threat exists, you will never be able to forget it…
I had never heard the word ‘incel’ until this book. I know there are men out there that behave awful when women are involved but I did not know there was a word and that this group of men are an extreme group. Right off when you read this book there are many victims. Everyone has free will and many of the choices made in this group were poor decisions which only encouraged Dayton to stay on his line of thinking. Reading how very early on there were signs that Dayton was suffering some sort of autism spectrum disorder and that he received no nearly intervention was heartbreaking. His mother did notice something was wrong but had no support either from the education system or family. Then, because Dayton did not understand societal cues, he was reinforced of the missed cues and continued on thinking the world ‘owed’ him. As a pre-k teacher, I saw this often with children (differing abilities) that fell through the cracks because of the system that is supposed to help children failed miserably. Now, I am not stating he was blameless because we all have choices. I do feel he was continuing on his destructive path because there was no intervention in his thought process. As he became older, every situation fit into his way of thinking. Yes, there were unkind people but Dayton had poor references for dealing with everyday happenings therefore he was unable to find good coping skills. Did his parents enable him? Yes because neither parent, I think, realized how far off his thoughts and ideas were from societal norms. Then, one must also allow society for some missed cues with Dayton. He was truly bullied. Different ways and varieties but still no one was held accountable for their behavior. After looking into this group of young men, I find it terrifying that some men feel this way towards women. This is a frightening example of how one person can become a martyr and fuel a movement whether it is positive or not.
4.5 stars. I'm so happy Rick Wood is still writing. His writing is incredible, very fast paced but his characters wow. It's like I actually met them. If I could I would get Delilah out of this mess, and give her the best life that she deserve, she's an angel.
The main character was based on Elliot Rodger if you're interested in knowing more about this monster.
I really wanted to know the reaction of the father.
This book is about a young boy called Dayton who despite his efforts and all the love given to him as a child growing up, he has problems interacting with his peers when he was young and also later in life.
He gets jealous of the people he sees, especially boys who find it easy to talk to the girls and women as he gets older. This all leads to a deep bitterness against the opposite sex and society. He still can't understand why. They don't notice him or want to talk to him. They see him as a weirdo.
He feels that he should have had more in life and that he has the injustice of life against him, too, for not having a better life. He discovers an online forum, which further encourages his beliefs and indignation to become more extreme. Society will pay!!!
This author knows how to bring horror into real life here and now!! It's truly horrific!! Dayton ends up taking this into his own hands murder and chaos he has planned ensues. I couldn't put this book down. This book is different from what I am used to reading, but I need to tell you it is just as much and equally an addictive read as any of his other books that I have read!!! This can be read as a standalone.
Horrific read!!! Loved it!!! WTF ending. You won't be disappointed!!!
I enjoyed this read it was a good storyline and had a great character in Dayton. My only qualms was it seemed very drawn out and not much happening. But it was about a young boy that grew up feeling all kinds of wrong and believing others were to blame for everything that was wrong I the world and him. Recommended
Absolutely riveting read , one of the best books I’ve read in a while. I felt empathy for the main character and a little sorry for everything he went through. Totally recommend reading this .
