Now those dedicated fans will learn the truth ...

Life as a demon is never an easy one. Orphaned as a child, Simi was left to make her own way in the world of humans. Bound to the Atlantean god who caused the death of her mother, she’s spent her life trying to make sense of a world that baffles her.

But as the gods vie for a power that leaves demons, Dark-Hunters and humans struggling to take sides, Simi can no longer rely on the god, Acheron, for protection. She must find her own way. Not just for herself, but to save the lives of her family and friends.

Only one entity holds the secret she needs to save Acheron’s life. But the price it demands is steep, and it will leave her at the mercy of a creature known for cruelty. Her choice should be easy. Simi was everything I hoped it would be and more!!! This is my favorite character of the Dark Hunters! Sherrilyn did the Simi proud! Simi has always been a sweet and light bringer to the dark world of sherrilyn’s dark hunters series. With an open heart and love for those around her she is the glue that holds so many together! I love this goth wild child demon so much! Her style and eating habits and one liners have made me laugh many times over the years! Especially when heifer goddess was around or when she was wrapping Ash around her little finger. Give this sweet little demon barbque sauce and her snacks and your credit card and your her friend for life! Simi makes you think! She sees the world through rose colored glasses with a heart that’s loyal, kind and loving! I enjoyed looking back at the past and how Simi affected so many characters and their lives. Between her smile, charm and the ability to listen and love whole heartedly each became better people! And to see her get her happy ending made my day! Thank you Sherrilyn for giving our Simi her own story and reminding us why we all fell in love with this beautiful and special little demon! I do so love me some Simi!! Until next time Luv’s😈💋

-------------

Voy a llorar!!!!!

Well, this was… disappointing.

Maybe the issue is I expected too much from Simi’s book. I was expecting something more along the lines of Acheron or Styxx. Not this. I also didn’t realize it was a YA fluff book. Nothing against YA (LOVED CON), I even like some YA fluff. But this was just missing something. I mean it was great to see all the characters again, and finding out more of Thorn was amazing. But this just doesn’t really fit either the characters, or any of the series. First to be completely honest the whole he watched her grow up then married her bit is really disturbing for me. Also there’s no chemistry between the two. And until the last 10-15 pages very little interaction. Second there’s no challenge or emotion. Maybe because Simi was so sheltered and protected (aka spoiled and entitled) that there was no depth to her. Even when Thorn disappears there’s none of the emotion and grief you’d expect. And to expect us to believe that if he ment as much to her as she claims that in 300 years with all the resources and friends she has, she wouldn’t have found him?! Sorry not buying that. All in all this wasn’t a bad book, or something I regret reading. But it’s definitely no where near what I used to expect from this author. I’m glad she’s writing again and it’s better than the last book I read of hers (which was at least 75% copy/pasted from a prior book). However I just don’t feel she’s doing justice to the world or characters she created.

I want to love this but I don't. I enjoyed it.

This book needed to be at least 100 pages longer. Simi and her hero don't even get together until the last 15 pages. You don't get any romance at all between the pair. He is gone for 30 years, comes back, kidnaps her, they kiss, they get married, and then she is pregnant. All in like 15 pages.

I wanted to see them get together, have actual relationship building....this was 300+ pages of time jumps and repeated scenes from a new POV.

Disappointed 😞

disappointed

I’ve never read Chronicles of Nick and maybe that’s why I’m disappointed in this book. But I have read the Dark Hunter books so expected a lot more from this story. It was more back story and no real connection between the h/h. They never even kissed until like the last 10 pages of the book. And then bam they are getting married. Was a let down. And not worth the $10 for the ebook in my opinion.

Wow. This was the Simi we wanted and waited for.
We got to see so many things from Simi point of view. This book touched on things in the Dark Hunters world and of course CON. Seeing so many things unfold was just wonderful.
My only complaint was the book was too short. I could have read a few hundred more pages about Simi and her love.

I received an ARC from Booksprout for my honest review.

This story was a bit out of left field, for the Dark Hunters YA series Chronicles of Nick. Simi, a long favorite character, fans have been eager to find out more about her. The story took us through Simi's past, and if you read both the Dark Hunters and CON series, the story gave insight to the overall series. While I did enjoy the story, I was a bit surprised at who Simi's love interest was. There was absolutely no hint of this relationship at all.
I am a huge fan of the original Dark Hunter books, and I have longed waited for the Nick story in Dark Hunters. I enjoyed reading Nick's YA stories, but the timeline became a bit convoluted. The author has stated that the YA stories will lead into the adult Nick's Dark hunter book, and I must admit I have become a bit frustrated by the long wait for it.

Me gustó.

Me gustó, Kenyon.

We were introduced to both these characters in the main Dark Hunter series (an adult fantasy romance series) years before the Chronicles of Nick but we got their story in a YA fiction series. Neither of these characters play that major of a part in CON for their stories to continue here. Xev and Caleb both made sense in the CON series. Simi and Thorn do not. The bulk of their origin backstories are in the main Dark Hunter series and the Hell Chaser (Thorn's group). The romance between them doesn't happen until the last 3 chapters of the book and I honestly felt cheated because Simi is such a beloved character. She deserved better than this. This is not a romance and it should have been.

I keep reading these books out of an obligation, it feels like, to see the end of a story that had so much potential. I have so many issues with the direction the story has taken that I can't really put it into words. This book was better than Xev's, but not by much because it has the same moment to moment breakneck jumps in pacing/story telling. It feels like you just watch the events roll by with no build up or investment.

Simi's character was always intriguing in the mainline CON books, and in some ways this book did not disappoint, but I still am left wanting more. Her siblings just reappear, no explanation. No reveal of her father, but it seemed like that was meant to be a plot point. There's simultaneously so much exposition that your expected to know from other books, but also nothing explained?

I am begging the author to use a thesaurus and come up with synonyms for "powers" or "centuries" and more. The writing gets very repetitive, especially book to book.

Would I read it again? Probably not.

I just want to know what happens to Nick, man.

I going to start this by saying this was kind of weird. I won't spoil Simi's partner but it was weird that our trip through there journey started when she was a kid even if she was actually older then him.

They are demons I know but still 1000 year old demon who looks like a toddler and a demon who thinks he's a human at 21. It didn't develop fast, this is a sloooooow burn (we're talking centeries) but still a little on the ick.

With that being said I did find parts of this hilarious, especially the perks of Ash as a dad and dealing with his kid growing up. And the peek inside Simi's head to know she goes through what everyone does as we realize we hurt people or get hurt by them.

First, the good. I truly enjoyed the book, I've always loved Simi and getting a look into the inner workings of her mind was something I loved. It showed us that she wasn't this child demon who was stuck as a perpetual teenager like we've seen in other books, she's just a genuinely curious and happy creature who chooses to see the good in people.

I also loved getting more of a back story on Thorn as well, he was always such a mysterious character, and with this book there are many questions answered. And him being Noir's favorite child was so funny to me? The scene where Noir was surprised he actually cares for one of his children was hilarious, he truly was shocked.

And we did learn some surprising things in this book about other characters, namely Grim/Mort with him being a child of Rezar(?) and Cam(!). I have to admit I did not see that one coming, and I do hope SK expands on that in the upcoming books, like does Beth know? Seth? What do they think of their brother, because obviously his parents don't care much for him.

Now, I have to admit that I've suspected this pairing would be a thing since Invision, the description of Simi's son was too similar to that of Thorn, that I couldn't imagine anyone else as his father, and paired with the name, there really was no other option.

That being said I still had a small hope that I would be wrong. They are not a terrible couple by any means, but there is still something that doesn't convince me, it might be the fact that Thorn and Simi didn't actually become a couple until the last 30 pages? I mean we saw much of their friendship and how they grew up together which was nice, and there were random comments thrown that hinted at the fact that they felt something more for each other, but it still felt a bit rushed for me.

All in all, not a bad book and I would say it was worth the wait.

You need to have read Chronicles of Nick and the Dark Hunter series to enjoy this book. It is NOT a stand alone.

I loved it!!!!! It was worth the wait (sort of 😉 )! I really love when SK takes us back in time and we walk through the whole life (and Simi’s life is LONG)! The minute she laughed at the guy (keeping it real it for spoilers) I knew he was her dude. It was just toooo perfect of a start! But then to see where he went and who he became (drop jawed, didn’t see that one coming). It made me happy.

Watching Ash be a Dad to Simi was so sweet, and getting her perspective of family was heartbreaking and warming at the same time.

I was kind of wondering if we were going to be close to wrapping the Malachai story line, but I have a feeling that is the arc that will end the series. Especially as we jumped to 2333 (I totally missed the 300 yr time jump in the chapter heading). But I know Nick had been conversing with Ambrose in the future, so maybe that was the time period?

I am just so excited that there was a new DH world book, cannot wait for the next (willing to take anything from our Queen), but the author deserves our patience and she has mine, even though tough! 😇

Honestly, I didn't expect this. Thorn and Simi being each others happily ever after's?

I liked how this book was such an ensemble of characters and storylines intertwined throughout all of the previous books. What I could have done without is them meeting when Thorn was a young adult and Simi was a child-child.

All of these storylines from the very distant pasts could have been replaced with their bonding and building a relationship when both of them are adults.

Whole "everyone loves Simi" troupe is a complete unbelievable bullshit. Same as with Thorn going all carnage in the end without any repercussions. What the fuck.

Simi's parentage was hinted at but not revealed. On the other hand, it is revealed that Grim's parents are Cam & Set - he switched sides during the Primus Bellum over to Mavromino. Also, there was a scene with Appollymi and Xiamara where she asked her something like "Does he love me?", probably talking about Kissare's reincarnation.

All in all, nostalgia drove this book.

It feels like forever we have waited!!!! It has arrived.

I have wanted this story with my entire being, for as long as I have loved all the Dark Hunter books. This is second only to Ash's story. If we never get another (God forbid), I am content. I laughed, I cried, I rooted for and railed against. Yes, all the feels. Sherrilyn, we are not worthy of you. Your heart is poured out on the pages and absorbed by the readers. Thank you , thank you, thank you. Simi is by far the most loved character in any series you have written. Her innocent view of the world is what we all need to strive to keep. Her kindness without deceit is wonderful and so needed in a time when you can lose hope so easily. Getting lost in the Dark Hunter world is my reward for dragging through a real world that most times I feel hates the very existence of "different or other than normal." Thank you again for giving me and all your fans the very story we needed when we needed it.

Now that was a better Dark Hunter story. Glad we got to see Simi story and have her find love. But Thorn!? Wow. Didn’t see that coming. My only issue is that we didn’t really have an issue to solve nor was it explained why Simi had different powers from other Charonte. Aside from that and other issues with plot lines to the overall story not explained it was a nice read.

I absolutely love the world that this author has built, so every time a new book of hers comes out - I jump on it so I can dive back into the Dark Hunters world. This was a quick read that I could not put down, absolutely LOVE Simi. It was amazing to get to see what goes through her head in this book. Can't wait to see what Sherrilyn writes next!

I always looked forward to reading Simi’s story one day, but I was a little disappointed. I was shocked by her significant other, and never really felt the chemistry between them. The book was okay, but didn’t advance the overall plot of the Chronicles of Nick. I also had a very hard time reading an entire book with the way she speaks. Short bursts always seemed charming, but this was a little too much for me.

I’ve read most of this author’s books and was interested in one from Simi’s perspective since she’s been a fixture in this world since the start. It was nice to see Simi’s progression from early on to the end (no spoilers). I would say that you should not read this book until you’ve read all the dark hunter books. You’d never understand who most of the characters are or any of the backstories. I’m not sure where it fits in but it’s a fun read regardless for fans who want to see a bit more of their favorite characters

For all the Simi fans, this is a must read! I loved Kenyon’s Dark Hunter series and was so excited for a chance to read Simi’s story. I loved how it goes into snippets from key events that have been featured or mentioned in other books, but shown from Simi’s perspective. The chapters moved along quickly and may be hard to follow for those who are not familiar with the series because there wasn’t a lot of world building. Basically, the world building was done in all the other books. It would definitely be best to read a few of the previous books first to fully appreciate this one. Many well-loved characters appear throughout the page. There were funny and heartwarming moments that definitely made me smile. There were also a few surprises for me, which may be because it’s been a while since I read anything from this world. In all, great book!.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

In the whole pantheon of inter-connected series this author writes, Simi is my favorite character. You can't help but to love her, she's child like, a bit crazy, obsessed with food and worms her way into your soul, wishing she was real and your BFF. Yet I was a bit leery to read this one, wasn't sure where it was going to go, hoped it wouldn't make me not love her any more. Happy to say that it didn't!

If you read this author there are things that won't surprise you, like the millennia of years covered, both far, far past and far far future. So many familiar characters show up, it's almost a who's who from all the series. It was interesting to see Simi as a baby/toddler/young girl/then at the end, grown woman. Hard for her arki to see that last part. It was also fun to see Simi win over all the badasses with her kindness and her general personality of wanting to love everyone. I really didn't expect her to end up with someone, but it made sense as the story evolved and there were no "icky" parts that could have crossed the line. Only stunned dumbfoundness as feelings were realized and then realized how long they had been there. I found myself smiling as the book came to a close, happy for Simi and the new life she has.

What’s really annoying about her “older” characters is that a majority of the book is about their past. Don’t get me wrong that part of the story is fascinating, but then the h and H are separated for centuries. The last 15-20% they discover each other and they’re back together. You don’t really get to read about their reunion and how they are now centuries apart, it’s extremely frustrating. Don’t set it up as a romance if a majority of the time they don’t even interact with one another.

Ultimately disappointed, was hoping she'd get a big detailed story like Ash or Styxx, especially considering how ancient she is. I feel like quite a bit of her story still got glossed over and details that could have been expanded on left out. Overall still good, but not what I was hoping for.

Unbelievable! I am blown away.

This book has answered many questions, gave a glimpse into several beloved characters' futures, and blown my mind! How many books has SK written? The best part is...still, she can write in plot twists that blow my mind! Simi is a must read! Five Stars!

I love Simi. Aside from Nick, I think she's my absolute favorite character of this entire series. That said, I have mixed emotions with this book. I loved that we got Simi's back story and more of Simi. It felt, mostly, true to the Simi we've had up until this point. I found this book absolutely confusing as fuck though. I haven't read the Dark Hunters series, I started with Nick, so I went into this not knowing a lot of things. But things I did 'know' from this series weren't the same in this book and I'm confused. There is time travel already but so far we've still had explanations as to why things seem different. Nothing of the sort in this one. Things are not the same and I have no idea what the hell is going on. I spent several hours scouring the interwebs and chat boards and Kenyon's website and as far as I can tell, Nick is the corrrect timeline. So...what the hell? SPOILERS: The Nick I've read up until this point would never be a womanizer. First, Cherise wouldn't allow it. Second, he's freaking madly in love with Nekoda. Third, he's too nice to use people like that. But in this book he's a man slut. And Simi sleeps with him??? WHAT.THE.FUCK??? There is nothing in the history of anything that makes me think that could happen.
I rated this book three stars instead of two because of the Simi-isms in it. I love her even more now. Otherwise, this would be a two star read because I'm so damned confused and not in a good way. More like a...can this series even be saved...kind of way. I was going to read Dark Hunters after this one, but now I'm not sure I want to invest the time. It breaks my heart, because I've loved this series so much. There is supposed to be one more book of Nick coming out next year. I'll read it, because I'm invested, but I think I'm not reading anything else by Kenyon until I see how she fixes the mess she made of this series.

Quotes
“Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. If you knew what was ahead of you, you’d avoid doing the very things you must do in order to have it unfold properly. One small innocuous decision and your destiny will be altered forever.”

“Love isn’t easy, Simi. It’ll be a long time before you understand what I mean. It’s the greatest feeling in the world when you have it, but it’s one that leaves you more vulnerable than you’ve ever been. So long as the person you love loves you, you’re safe. But when they don’t love you … it’s the worst thing you can imagine. Truly, there’s no greater hell.”

Leucious didn’t know what to say. It seemed like there ought to be something people said when they were given an item. But his people didn’t give gifts to each other. Unless you counted insults. Those were given freely.

Producive. It don’t produce anything but achies. Sad things happen and they shouldn’t. People are mean and they shouldn’t be. The Simi would like to eat all the meanie people, but akri say I can’t. He say that meanie people are mean ’cause no one taught them right. And that when they aches, they want to share their aches. But wouldn’t the world be so much better if people shared their happies, instead?”
[Yes, sweet Simi, it would.]

“Breathe, daughter. All will be right.”
“Do you know that, or do you believe that?”
“Is there a difference? We make our own truth with what we believe.”

“Good and bad lives in the heart of us all. It is the choices we make, large and small, every day that determine our future. Have faith in your child, Brigid. For while he holds his father’s blood, he also holds yours. Once he leaves you, his life will be his own. And as with all living creatures, he’ll have to find the courage to face and battle what his enemies throw at him. Whether he stumbles, falls or ultimately triumphs is a decision only he can make. For there is no true failure in life, child. There is only giving up one day before we would have achieved success.”

“That’s what akri say, too. Emotions don’t have brains. But I don’t understand. Mine are simple. Hungry, I eat. Mad, I eat. Happy, I laugh. Angry, I eat. Simple.”
[Girl, same.]

“You don’t know betrayal, Simi. Be grateful. It’s a hard thing to put behind you. If not impossible. The more brutal the betrayal the longer it takes to heal.” Because betrayal began with trust. No one should be punished for trusting or loving someone else. Of all life’s cruelty, betrayal was the most vicious bitch.

Only those closest to you could destroy you. The ones you mistakenly trusted.
[Ouch. Too true.]

Was this what it meant to grow up? To stop being happy all the time? Most the adults around her carried awful sadness inside them. She didn’t want that. They all seemed to have a part of them missing. A part of their soul that was so scarred that it kept them from seeing the good things in their lives.

We have three kinds of family. Those we are born to. Those who are born to us and those we let into our hearts.

Why couldn’t she stay a little demon? What was the point of being an adult? When she’d been little, she’d thought it would give her more freedom. It didn’t. Just more responsibilities and more people to watch out for. As a child, others were quick to help. That stopped with adultness. No one was eager to step in anymore. They wanted her to handle it on her own and then got mad at her when she did.

SIMI is the fifth instalment in Sherrilyn Kenyon’s adult SHADOWS OF FIRE paranormal, fantasy series set in the author’s cross over CHRONICLES OF NICK and DARK HUNTERS series.

NOTE: SIMI should not be read as a stand alone as the current instalment crosses over with most of the previous stories. A working knowledge of the series is highly recommended.

Told from several omniscient third person perspectives, covering close to twelve thousand years in the life, SIMI focuses on some of the events in Simi’s life that will lead her to finding her own happily ever after. Simi is a Charonte demon, over ten thousand years old yet a mentality and naivete of someone just barely out of their teens- a demon who often speaks of herself in third person. The beloved and protected daughter of the heart to the Atlantean god Apostolos aka Acheron, Simi’s innocence, and ability to see beyond the surface is a testament to her capacity to love almost everyone she meets (but not the heifer goddess 😉 ).

Throughout the years, Simi will come under the protection of Acheron’s mother, the goddess Apollymi, Prince Leucious aka Thorn, Savitar, Shadow, and Jaden, as well as the large aggregation of Dark Hunters, Warriors, gods and goddess but saying that, a war is approaching, the gods and goddesses want more power, and in order to take control, the most powerful of gods and demons must be destroyed and consumed in the process. Throughout the story, the Malachai dies and is reborn, then dies and is reborn again, until the current Malachai, the most powerful of them all, comes into his powers and is feared by all.

SIMI is a story for fans of the Dark Hunter / Chronicles of Nick series as the current story cross over with most, if not all, of the previous story line instalments and interconnected series. Sherrilyn Kenyon barely touches the surface of Simkey’s life and experiences. As a child having suffered the loss of her mother and siblings, to her introduction and guardianship under Acheron, and her insatiable appetite for ..everything covered in BBQ sauce... the reader is up close and personal with Simi’s childlike behavior, attitude and personality as she discovers love with a man who will lose himself to the darkness.

SIMI is a story about innocence and vulnerability, power and corruption, relationships, friendships and love. The premise is endearing, inviting and impassioned yet somewhat YA (young adult) in nature and delivery. Like many series with a favorite character whose story has yet to be told, the high anticipatory factor is often met with some disappointment as expectations are not always recognized, and in this, the childlike attributes and innocence of Simi must be delicately and carefully handled . The characters are numerous, familiar, animated and spirited-always a pleasure to get reacquainted with the wonderful cast. SIMI is not a romance story line but a story of love.

Simi is an orphaned Charonte demon. She does have a powerful akri, who would slay anyone that dares hurt her. Simi’s innocent, childlike demeanor allows her to befriend all kinds of beings from demons to humans to even gods. She even meets the one who will one day win her heart. Their paths continually cross throughout the centuries, which only adds to their growing feelings. Simi will do anything to protect him, even anger her akri-daddy, Acheron.

Simi has always been a fan favorite. People have often speculated on who would be the best “fit” for her. And who would be able to stand up against Acheron. I admit being hesitant and skeptical. There is a part of me that wanted Simi to remain the same. But, then another part wanted to see her as an adult, enjoying the same experience as other couples from the series did. Strangely, I am still feeling ify about the person Simi ends up with. I felt oddly disconnected towards the end of the book. Perhaps it is the lengthy wait that colored my view on her happily-ever-after.

SIMI is the third book in the SHADOWS OF FIRE series, a continuation of the CHRONICLES OF NICK books. It is also a YA spin-off from the author’s wildly popular DARK-HUNTER books. Young Adult is not a genre that appeals to me. I never could get into them, so I am unfamiliar with the CON novels (my middle son has, and he loved them). I never heard of the SHADOWS OF FIRE series until this book. Now, I have read most (save for four or five, there abouts) of the DARK-HUNTER books.

The book starts with Simi’s point of view, including her unique speech patterns. It made it hard to read at first, until I got used to it. Then I followed the story much easier. It was fun to see Simi growing up throughout the centuries and seeing the people she meets along the way. I had a feeling about who the author would pair with Simi when he was introduced in the book.

What I love the most about this book is being reacquainted with old characters. Mama Lo, The Peltiers, Santuary, Deveraux sisters, Nick, and especially Cherise. I never realized how much I missed them until they showed up in the book. It was also nice to meet the children from those beloved characters, even if they were merely mentioned.
