Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration. He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended. His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts. In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.
It might sound really boring to someone who hasn’t read this series to keep describing more or less the same things happening in this series: Son Goku fights bad guys and wins, then goes to a Strongest Under the Heavens tournament where he and his pals fight others. They have done exactly this three times now. But I can assure you, it’s anything but boring.
If a writer has done their job well, then by the 15th volume in a series you’re fully invested in the characters and will read any story they’re in with delight, so long as you can see those characters - and Akira Toriyama has done a very, very good job with Son Goku and co.!
This book is the third Strongest Under the Heavens tournament featuring grown up versions of Goku and Kuririn, and it’s one match after another. Tenshinhan vs. Cyborg Taopaipai (the world’s greatest assassin who fought - and lost - to Goku during the Red Ribbon storyline), Goku vs. Chi-Chi, Kuririn vs. Piccolo Jr, and Yamcha vs. “Shen”.
The setup might sound stale but because everyone’s more superpowered than ever - Goku’s fights in particular are fascinating, if only to see what he’s learned in Heaven for three years - the fights are far more imaginative, more energised, faster and exciting than ever to read. Throw in some romance - Chi-Chi makes Goku keep his innocent childhood promise to marry her! - a throwback to the series (Taopaipai) and a surprise in the form of “Shen”, and you’ve got one helluva Dragon Ball book!
What I’m in awe of is how Toriyama can go from end of the world storylines like the conclusion of the Piccolo saga in the last book and immediately recapture that sense of urgency in a smaller storyline, like this third tournament arc. The fluidity with which he switches gears between volumes and never loses the reader’s attention or storytelling pace is extraordinary. You rarely see this in serialised comics - the best western example I can think of is Jason Aaron/RM Guera’s Scalped which was a flawless 10 volume series. But Dragon Ball is 42 volumes total!!
If you’ve made it this far into the series, you’re absolutely gonna love it. The characters continue to develop well, the stories are as enthralling as ever, and the action keeps getting more compelling. For an all-fighting volume, it’s never brainlessly dumb and the characters and story don’t suffer from the action focus - if anything, they’re enhanced! A martial arts comic is in its element when its got good martial arts, and Dragon Ball has that in bundles.
Dragon Ball is perfection in a comic book and volume 15 is just that - onto the final book in the series!
Another volume of just Tournament fighting! But somehow Toriyama manages to find a way to make it exciting once again.
We get to see a teenage Goku fight. Chi-chi comes back! Apparently Goku promised to marry her way back in one of the first few volumes.
God is fighting because he doesn't think Goku has it in him to kill Piccolo (which will kill God too)
Lots of great fights. God beats up Yamcha (poor guy can't catch a break). Kuririn gets beat by Picollo jr. Goku beats Tenshinhan. And God starts to fight Picollo when the volume ends.

Look, can you stop ending each volume on SUCH CLIFFHANGERS? I have other books I need to read, I can't just read an entire manga series in one go... (I mean I could but really I have other books I need to read... XD)
The tournament continues and the epic battles continue, Tien vs Goku was my favorite one, and you see both try different techniques but Goku was still holding back his powers and when he reveals them, the battle becomes so interesting and the art here is so clean and it makes the fight look all the much better! Next up: Piccolo vs God!
How these characters all grew is beautifully handled as they showcase their strengths and their new vision of the world throughout the tournament. The volume ends on a much-needed battle where things are bound to get hectic!
Such a great installment!!! So much action and everyone is so grown up. Seeing how much Goku has grown since we last saw him is so astonishing. Before he was a kid who was clueless and now he has honed his craft and is a mighty warrior. Also Chi Chi and Goku have been married!!!! We are so close to the end of the Great Demon Piccolo Arc and the end of Dragon Ball!!
Tournament arcs are always a blast, and this is the last one for a very long while. You'd think they could have enrolled in one in between all those timeskips in Z. Alas.
Zaskakujący dobry tomik, pełen akcji i ciekawych rozwiązań. Malutki zbiór obfituje w kilka wydarzeń, przemyśleń i kultowych starć. Niektóre dość nudne, jednak w większości były to w miarę ciekawe pojedynki.
This will be a copy and pasted review since I read the last 6 volumes in one sitting.
Instead of going through each plot for each book, I'll summarize. The way the plot advances can become predictable after a while. Goku will face a big bad and will need to get stronger and attempt the fight again. Regardless, the way the characters are written and the comedy in each book made the series really enjoyabl, and I could not put the books down.
This volume was so much fun with the time jump! I loved seeing everyone a bit older and bringing several fan favorite characters back for the tournament. I can't wait to watching these episodes of the anime! I think I almost prefer older Goku just from the little bit I've seen so far.
Ahh you already know what it's going to be. All stars!!!
I really thought another Tenka'ichi Budokai tournament will not be that interesting... Boy, was I wrong. I love how Toriyama shows us precisely the extent to which the characters have changed and grown through their tournament battles. It's so well done! Seeing Goku grown is at once highly entertaining and a bit sad - that little kid was just too cute! Also, almost no pervy behaviour from Kame Sen'nin, which is always a huge relief :D.
Tournament arc part 3! It’s starting to feel a little repetitive, but the stakes are so high and the characters just keep doing cooler and cooler things so I’m totally fine with another tournament!
Previously on Dragon Ball, Goku and the gang are in the Tenkaichi Budokai semifinals competing against Taopaipai, Piccolo Jr., a mysterious girl from Goku's past, and Shen who looks like a pathetic fighter but looks can be deceiving. Tenshinhan fights against Taopaipai and it is a bittersweet moment. Tenshinhan has pity on Taopaipai because based from his martial art skills he is no match for Tenshinhan and for Taopaipai he does not care unless he gets to kill him at the end of the battle. In the end Tenshinhan kicks Taopaipai into out of bounce and wins the first match.
Goku on the other hand fits with this mysterious girl who is angry with him and that feeling will not go away later on. She is no match for Goku and when he wins the match he finds out it is Chichi who is the daughter of the Ox-King. The last time they saw each other, she made innuendos as to Goku asking her hand and since he is oblivious he thought she was talking about food and accepted her hand not realizing it meant marriage. She brings up at the tournament and he reminds the whole event and gladly proposes to her.
I do not believe he finds her gorgeous like all the other men who are drooling, I think he is someone who lives in the moment and since he kept a promise to her, he is definitely going to keep it. By having this storyline taken care of it now makes sense how Goku married Chichi and had Gohan. While reading this story I was wondering how the hell did he had a kid if he is oblivious about sex and women which clearly in Dragon Ball Z he still hasn't changed.
Kuririn battles Piccolo and it is obvious that Kuririn is no match for Piccolo. I feel bad for Kuririn because he is always makes it to the semifinals and always loses, I hope someday he can win the tournament. You do get to witness some growth in Kuririn's abilities but Piccolo is on a whole different playing field when it comes to defeating Goku.
Yamcha fights Shen and he believes it is going to be a piece of cake but Goku notices some distinct energy coming out of Shen that suggest otherwise. Shen acts like an idiot when fighting but he uses the trap to make the opponent believe that he is a worthless fighter and shows his true might which makes Yamcha lose. Goku pieces everything together and realizes that it is God who is taking control of Shen. God believes that Goku is no match for Piccolo and wants to trap Piccolo in a bottle using the Mafuba.
Goku fights Tenshinhan again and I believe this time the battle was pathetic. I feel like Tenshinhan actually went backwards with his training and some of the moves that he performed were outdated and easily made Goku find his weak spots and win the match. I wanted it to be intense like the last time but I realize that Goku needs his strength when it comes to Piccolo.
Everyone is astounded by Goku skills and I love how over the course of the different matches, Master Roshi is able to notice how Goku is able to fight without barely using his powers and with slowing his heartbeat. by the end of this story we encounter a match between Piccolo and Shen? Who will win in the match between Good vs Evil? Will God be able to destroy Piccolo? Tune in next time on Dragon Ball.
Goku is an eccentric monkey-tailed boy with superhuman strength and boundless energy. His life of peaceful solitude is interrupted one day when he meets Bulma, a feisty young lady on the hunt for mysterious wish-granting orbs known as Dragon Balls. Accompanied by a group of zany companions, the two team up on a grand adventure full of all kinds of intense battles, dangerous villains and whacky hijinks.
Now this was a blast of nostalgia! Dragon Ball was the first anime I ever watched as a dorky little toddler. I remember watching it every week with my big brother. I watched the reruns multiple times and owned all the Budokai and Tenkaichi fighting games. I developed a bit of an unhealthy obsession with Dragon Ball Z throughout my middle school years. While I don't like the series nearly as much as I once did, I'm very thankful toward this series for introducing me to the wonderful world of anime and manga. After Dragon Ball, I watched Ghibli, Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Inuyasha, Fullmetal Alchemist, Rurouni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho, Sailor Moon, Fruits Basket and dozens of others. I then went on to discover some of my all time favorite series like Berserk, Naoki Urasawa's Monster, Gantz, Battle Royale, Attack on Titan, Vagabond, Blade of the Immortal, Parasyte, Goodnight Punpun and more. Dragon Ball made me a fan of this medium and it felt great to re-experience the series from beginning to end for the first time in twenty years.
The story and characters are simple, but the series is easy to read, hilarious and wholesome in spite of the constant action. The series starts off as a raunchy, self-aware slapstick comedy full of fourth-wall breaking, sexual innuendos and surprisingly dirty jokes. This series was definitely edgy for its time considering it was geared towards a young audience. A lot of the perverted humor and gag comedy wouldn't fly too well with modern sensibilities, but it can be pretty funny for people who don't get offended easily and can handle some outdated mannerisms and attitudes from the past.
While the series does start off as a comedy gag reel, it slowly develops into a more serious streamlined plot with better written characters and villains. The story never really blooms into anything worth writing home about, but it remains consistently entertaining and fun to read. The interactions between Goku and his pals is always funny, even the way he plays around with his enemies is comical. If I remember as well as I think I do, I believe the maturity of the story and characters improve much more in the sequel series which I'll eventually get around to reviewing at some point. The original Dragon Ball ends on a great battle sequence that sets up the more serious tone of Dragon Ball Z.
My only major complaint about the overall story is the Dragon Balls make things way too convenient and removes the stakes and consequences of literally everything. If a major character dies they can just be wished back. This removes any sense of drama or tension from the battles and the consequences of the villains actions becomes moot. The series doesn't take itself too seriously and often pokes fun at itself, but the way the Dragon Balls are utilized are just a little too much in my opinion. Even comedies need a certain amount of suspension and stakes to make me care about what's going on.

Okay I'm just going to get out there and say this but . . . I don't much care for Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball Z.
Now let me make this perfectly clear. This doesn't mean that I think that the manga or anime of the Dragon Ball franchise is bad. Far from it. I think there's a lot of things to admire about the Dragon Ball franchise. In fact, a lot of famous manga artists have received inspiration from this Shonen manga series. And those artists have written some manga that has increased in popularity all around the world such as Kishimoto's Naruto, Kubo's Bleach, and Oda's One Piece. Which is ironic because those are manga series I really enjoy. Each of these manga take an element from the Dragon Ball series and use it for inspiration for their own work like battles, art, character design, and plot.
In a nutshell, this series was kinda of a bore for me but to be fair I kind of expected that from a late 80's-early 90's manga. It has all the elements that you would expect from a manga published in that time frame. The plot is very simple, the action is very cheesy, the comedy is a bit overdone, the characters are simply designed but memorable, and the art definitely has a 90's art style when it comes to the expression of the characters.
The only character I cared for (and remembered) was the main character Goku. He's innocent and the typical hero whose strong and has a good heart but not very bright. He's willing to help his friends because he has a strong will that brings out his powers. There's a lot of things to like about this character and what's more interesting is that you can see different characters from other manga that resemble a few traits from Goku that basically became a norm for main leads in Shonen manga. The few examples that I can come up with at the top of my head are Luffy from One Piece, Naruto from Naruto, and Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star who mostly portrays the 'manly' appearance and strength that Goku possesses and displays within the series.
With all that's been said, I still think it's an admirable series despite my personal feelings towards it. It's extremely popular worldwide and for the anime to still be watched and loved to this very day I think that says a lot about it. So there are some things to like and admire about it because of the legacy that it brought with its creation.
So if you're going to take something from this review, just remember the fact that Dragon Ball has done a lot for a very popular art form and will continue to be great and loved for years to come.
Oczywiście tom wygrywa pojedynek Goku z Tienem.
This is the third Tenkaichi Budokai, and fourth tournament if you count Baba's challenge, but what keeps this from getting stale is how it feels like a climax to the entire series. Kuririn vs Demon Junior finally gives Kuririn a chance to step out from under Goku's shadow and prove himself as a fighter for good and threat to evil- it shouldn't even count as a spoiler to know Kuririn isn't going to win but watching him attempt to hold his own is incredible. Tenshinhan vs his old master, Taopaipai, and then some proof of Goku's progress! Really, this Goku is peak for the entire series. No longer a kid, still a goofball, immature but with an air of calmness around him as he's first to notice things about fights that others aren't. The fights are less gag-reliant and focus on making use of tricks we've already seen but now are being used in a perfected form. Tenshinhan is still busting out new moves, Goku is still relying on a smaller base of attacks but with greater agility and strength to form a stronger base. It's non-stop action and a climax to character arcs over a dozen volumes in the making!
Why can’t my guy Yamcha get some love? 😔 His fight with Kami-Sama “Shen” is funny as hell but I still want him to have his cool-guy moments. 😎
The first time I read this, I thought it was weird that Goku could send fist shockwaves, I thought that was just an Ultra Instinct thing. Then I realized it’s because they didn’t want Goku to hit a woman. Makes sense.
It drives me crazy when characters just borrow moves from each other out of nowhere. Goku can do the Taiyo-Ken without practice, Kuririn can fly out of nowhere, so can most characters now as a matter of fact. I just think these techniques could be more interesting when we understand the ins and outs of them.
But besides that, this is just an exciting and action packed volume. The Goku and Tenshinhan fight isn’t quite as good as their first bout, but it’s still great. And Kuririn v. Piccolo is way cooler than it needs to be. The Chi-Chi stuff is cute, but I do wish that she was more of a character. It’s great that she’s a strong fighter, but she never fights again, and becomes the annoying wife all throughout Z. I just want Goku to love her more.
Overall, this is an intense, fun, and funny precursor to the finale.
*Review of Volumes 13-15* Soooo if my math is correct, Goku is now 21? He's so much more mature now! Yamcha too! I just realized he doesn't fear girls anymore! Dunno how that happened, but I don't mind. This fight with Piccolo is kind of rehashing the same stuff. More training and more fight scenes. I do appreciate the focus on the mental aspect of fighting, so it's not too repetitive. And there was a bit more tension when but after that things wrapped up pretty nicely. There was something that bothered me about Anyway, it's not the biggest focus, so it's not too much of a big deal.
Do you remember when that lady sued the people behind Twilight because she said it stole from her real life? Or was it Frozen? Or both?
Was this lady claiming to be a vampire or to have magic ice powers?
Either way, much like Goku, I also met my wife in a fighting tournament, well we met earlier, but we were reunited in a fighting tournament, which she entered in order to make me fulfill my promise to marry her, which I did when we were both like 5 years old. I punched her silly (before you get all uptight, in the world of cosmic fighting tournaments, the feminist thing to do is to treat a woman the way you would a man, so in order to stick to my politics, I had no choice), and then I shrugged and was like, "Well, I guess we get married now."
I never thought my story was in danger of being ripped off, Hollywood doesn't usually like to show spouses beating each other as a "meet-cute," but it just goes to show you gotta watch out, because someone WILL steal your love story, and you gots to get paid.
This Saga is definitely the series coming full circle, and boy are they showing it. Our characters are more powerful than ever. The action somehow manages to keep up with the Demon King Piccolo saga in terms of quality. But the intensity, the drama, the stakes- They’re all toned down. A lot. And the story is pretty much the same thing we’ve gotten twice before. Sure, it’s undeniable that this is the best tournament saga yet, but it’s still the third one in how many issues. No matter how many tricks it pulls out of its sleeve, it always, in the back of my mind, feels like something I’ve read twice before. Because I kind of have. So, yeah, on some level, is it probably as good as the Demon King Piccolo saga? Sure. But does it feel as intense or fresh as it? No. Not by a long shot. To me, the Demon King Piccolo saga was the real ending of Dragon Ball. This is just an appetizer before Z.
So everyone trained for 3 years and really bulked up. This is the first half of the tournament where we see how far everyone has advanced. It does make me sad to see that Tien had so much potential as a character and yet they went with Yamcha to follow just to use as a joke. Demon Jr (Piccolo) is toying with the mortals however and is amused at how much stronger he is than them. Meanwhile, Goku watches seemingly ordinary Shen move amongst the ranks. And he gets married!
Just so good. This arc is so exciting and a perfect culmination of everything leading up to this. Even though I know DB was originally published all as one work and only later was it split up into DB and DBZ, this really does feel like such a natural place to start to "conclude" the story. Only one volume left after this; can't believe I'm already so close to the end. I'm excited for DBZ, but I'll really miss these old school Dragon Ball days with the original gang.
