She was the complete opposite of me in every way; sweet, spontaneous, and full of sunshine… she was also half my age.
The world was her playground, and Nova Skye spent every breath fearlessly exploring it. Her passion for adventure was contrary to the solitude I loved, yet somehow, I couldn’t get enough.
Her innocence sparked a flame in my empty soul, burning down every defense I had. By the time I started to believe in the us she said we could be, it was too late. My free-spirited rebel was gone, taking what was left of me with her.
Without her, I learned that home wasn’t just a place, it was Nova… and it was finally time to come home.
The first time Anna tried to read a romance novel, her hair caught on fire when she leaned over a candle to sneak a peek at her mom’s Harlequin. She thinks being hit on the head with a shirtless Fabio until the smoke cleared is what sparked the flame for her love of romance. Anna was born in Wisconsin, but currently lives in Texas with her husband and two boys. She writes sexy romance that always has a happy ending and loves bringing characters back for cameos. Less than six degrees of separation connects any of her novels. When she’s not writing or reading, she’s watching reruns of her favorite romcoms, talking to her dog and cat like they’re human, eating carbs, or practicing hand lettering. She loves to hear from readers and can be found on social media as @annabrooksauth everywhere.
This book had most of my favorite tropes: age gap, sunshine/grumpy and small town wrapped up in one emotional romance.
Mack experienced a tragedy that he's still trying to heal from, but when a firery young woman crashes into his life, he has no idea what to make of her, or how she makes him feel. Nova is the epitome of a free spirit, and I loved how she made Mack find the man he used to be. He was just so free with her, and once he stopped fighting his attraction to her, they had a truly beautiful relationship. Honestly these two are my favorite in this series!
They have a lot to overcome, but their hard earned hea is so worth it! There's so many feels in this heartfelt romance, and this one had a lot more depth than the other books in the series which I really appreciated. These two are so amazing together and I just adored them!
**I received an ARC of this book and these are my honest opinions**
Mack and Nova are the most frustrating couple I've ever read. But I couldn't stop reading their story too. I liked Nova's character a lot. She gave Mack chance, but in the end, she knows she's worth so much more and stops giving him chances. I loved that about her. And I totally get her. Mack needs to work things out first to be a better guy for Nova. Well, that definitely captured my attention until the end. No matter how much I want to smack Mack's head. I enjoyed Mack Daddy's story. Especially after reading his kids' stories.
Yum, yum, Mack Daddy!!! I love a good grumpy-sunshine novel and Mack Daddy...I mean Unravelling Mack Ryder is a really good opposites attract, grumpy-sunshine book.
Mack Ryder has had love and lost it in one of the toughest ways possible. His first wife abandoned him and his four children leaving him with no closure or word on her whereabouts for yearssssssss. It was only upon her deathbed that she contacted her family, finally trying to close a wound that had been festering, but never fully healing. Mack should have found peace knowing his wife was finally at rest, but like all heartbreak, he suffered from all the years of abandonment making it nearly impossible for him to move forward. That is until Nova came to town.
Nova is the perfect name for the bright personality and shiny light that she brings into Mack's life. While Nova is younger in age, she has an old soul and makes the perfect match to Mack's grumpy persona.
Nova is a free spirit nomad, never staying in one place for long. Instead, Nova lets life guide her to her next adventure, that is until she meets the Ryder family and she feels the pull for something more, perhaps something permanent. However, Mack is adamant about pushing her away and not dimming her light. His fear is real, his first wife left when she felt smothered by ranch life and Mack isn't about to fall again only to be broken by love. Nova doesn't know much about what makes him tick, but it does make it tough to fight for something that she knows she's never had. She wants Mack, but If Mack doesn't want her and staying in one spot is all he's ever known then surely there must be a reason, if only she wasn't so drawn to the grouchy man.
These two together are pure magic, but they are also a little toxic. It's quite the recipe for one angsty read, but by the end, my heart was overflowing with so much love for these two I couldn't stop smiling and wishing all the wonderful things for them and their extended family.
I love all the Ryder's and every time they all came together. For fans of the series this book will warm the heart and for anyone just jumping in, it will make a new fan of the Ryder family. I know I have loved the journey as each of them have found love, but none so much as Mack and Nova. Their story is hard fought and quite lovely too.
This is a wonderful Age gap, Gumpy/Shinshine, healilng story that will dig up many emotions.
Closed off, set in his ways Mack didn't even see the hurricane of Nova coming as she drove herself straight to his heart. Macks fears of not being enough, holding her back from the life on the run lifestyle she is accustomed to. Never wanting to tie her down to one place always wanting more. His family see the spark she has ignited and they are thrilled to have this Mack back and are so very supportive. But there were so many things stacked up against them and hurddles to jump before finding the light that could bring true happiness to theem both. Question is, do they have enough faith and want to fight, prove everything and everyone that they could be the right person for each other.
What a great addition to the series of Ryder's. It is fun to see Mack struggle and get glimpses of all the book couples from the beginning.

It's been a long time since I've been in this series, but I do remember being excited to read Mack's story. And while I liked some aspects, I really struggled with a lot in this book.
I felt like Mack was taken too far away from the the things he loved. He loves his family. He loves the ranch. So why do we put him with someone that is a 'free spirit' and doesn't want to be in one place at a time. Don't get me wrong, I liked Nova but not that part of her for Mack.
Then we are constantly bringing up the age gap. I'm not even sure we ever actually discuss what the age difference is, but there are constant references about him being to old for her, etc... I hate that in age gap romances. Why do we have to harp on that aspect so much in a book?
I loved the grumpy/sunshine aspect of the book, so there's that at least.
I knew it would be one that tugged on the heartstrings quite a bit, and it definitely did.
Mack was determined to never love again. But he couldn't see Nova headed his way until it was too late. The moment they met, a spark was created. They were pulled together, and it was essentially love at first sight. At times he was quite hard headed, and I wanted to knock some sense into him. Between the grief, the healing, and falling for this woman, his life was flipped.
Nova is such a free spirit, and I loved that about her. Plus she knew what she wanted, and was determined to make it work. She also knew that she wasn't willing to settle for less.
Such a good story, and am glad to see Mack find someone to love.
This story is chocked full of emotion and big feels. Nova is a free spirit and Mack is a grumpy old man! He does everything not to commit to her, but what about the champagne, the Westphalia, the ATV, the skydiving, the chicken soup, and the hot air balloon? It's a beautiful love story and I loved this conclusion to the Ryder's series. Loved Paradise, their tattoo and the epilogue's. Makes me smile to big to have read this series and family. Ms. Brooks is a one click author for me.
Nova is such a force of nature, some of her spirit is due to her childhood experiences and her family, but still she is so adventurous. Mack is the complete opposite, but then again circumstances made him so. When they meet the spark is there but she is younger and full of life, and he doesn't think he is. Truthfully he gave me whiplash even tho I understand the why, it was all ups and down. She is the steadfast one. I love the ending. Very sweet.
Unraveling Mack Ryder by Anna Brooks is Book 4 of Ryder Ranch Series. This is the story of Mack and Nova. Mack was set on being closed off and to not love again. Nova was a free spirit loving person who started chipping away and Mack's reserve. Enjoyed.
I'm pretty sure I haven't read a book this captivating in a long while. Mack and Nova's story is one not to be missed. I've read and loved all the books in the previous series that all tie into this one. Though this one truly is a favorite. It's super sweet, heartbreaking, and one hundred percent addictive. You will be teary eyed and smiling so many times thought thier journey to hea. The ending was not what I expected at all but I'm soo very glad it surprised me. 5stars. Don't miss out on this book or the others in the Ryder Ranch or Reason to Ruin series.
I loved this book; the wait was worth it! Mack is a complex man; unraveling him will take an extraordinary woman. Nova, a free spirit full of wanderlust and gold heart, is the woman to tame him. The story hooked me in with Mack’s actions towards Nova, and I was sad to read the end after a beautiful epilogue. Do not miss out on this fantastic series.
Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
“Unraveling Mack Ryder” by Anna Brooks is an emotional story that may very well unravel your heart by the time you reach the last page. It’s the 4th book in the ‘Ryder Ranch’ series and although it can be read as a standalone, I personally think it’s even better if you’ve first read the other books in the series. But if you don’t feel like doing that now, don’t hesitate to jump right into this one.
Mack’s wife walked out on him and their four children a decade ago, and never kept in touch or looked back at all. She left emotional devastation in her wake. When he finally hears from her, it’s because she’s on her deathbed. Mack is still caught up in feelings of self-recrimination and inadequacy. He lives for his ranch, his children, and his grandchildren; since he got married when he was a teenager, he’s a young grandfather. His life is relatively predictable, until Nova comes into it and makes him think about things he does not want to think about. Nova had an extremely unconventional childhood as the daughter of artistic hippies. She has an adventurous spirit, and a desire to see everything and experience everything she possibly can. Neither Mack nor Nova understands the official connection between them, yet still it exists.
At different times while reading this book, I wanted to reach into it and physically shake either or both main characters. You can feel the emotions each goes through … excitement, confusion, pain, fear, joy, passion, worry, and more. Mack and Nova are emotionally exhausting, but in a good way. There is also plenty of humor throughout the story. Mack’s children and their spouses, the primary characters in other books, are wonderful secondary characters in this one. I thought the ending was excellent. I also really enjoyed the epilogue, and the update it provides about Mack, Nova, and the rest of the family.
I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily sharing my thoughts and opinions. I also purchased a copy.
*sigh* This story was sweet and tugged at all those feels. Mack has had it rough. He finds love at a young age and they start their family. He loses his parents and has to take over the family ranch. His wife, a selfish sort of woman, abandons him along with their four kids. So, for years, he has worked day and night to give his children the life he feels they deserve, and works tirelessly to build up and keep the family ranch running. Then, enter his wife, the one who left him and deserted her family, but now, she is dying and wants to say goodbye. She leaves him devastated. He blames himself for not being enough.
But, in comes Nova. A young woman who is so far his complete opposite that I wasn't sure how they would make it. She is the age of his children, lives without putting down roots, and has a carefree spirit that Mack doesn't want to tie down. These two have such a strong chemistry it is difficult to miss. They know they have no future together, but they can't help but cherish the here and now.
Along their journey, they find little things that connect them, a few things scattered through this story they have in common. Nova even talks Mack Daddy into going on a trip with her, a one-last-chance to be together before she sets off on her road trip adventure and he goes back to his responsible, father and grandfather life. But, when they return, tragedy strikes and they are torn apart.
Nova leaves. Mack mopes. But his kids are there to lift him up and make him see there is more to life than what he has believed. But, is it too late for him to be with his Nova?
From a strong-willed H to a free spirit h, a wonderful cast of supporting characters (I LOVED that his kids accepted her even though they are her age and/or a bit older), and a beautiful setting make for an enjoyable, sweet, emotional read that and fan of romance will love.
We had mixed feelings about this one, but, we still loved it overall. We loved the characters, even Mack, even though we wanted to give him a good smack upside the head now and again. Loved Mack's family, his kids were awesome, loving and supportive. Nova what a beautiful girl inside and out, full of so much life she took chances lived her life to the fullest. She lived a colorful life that made things even more interesting.
Mack's back and forth with Nova just got and my nerves with all the push and pull. Nova, regardless of her age, was a risk-taker but, she knew her own mind and could make sound decisions when it came to her life in general as well as her love life, and we hated the pain Mack caused her because he couldn't get his sh** together. At some point, we were wishing she gave up on the grump.
Nova, was awesome, it was great to live vicariously through her with all her adventures. Mack was a good father and hard worker and overall a great guy, just emotionally he was a wreck his ex/wife might have something to do with it but, it was Mack who needed to let go of the past and move forward. At some point, you sympathize with him about his and Nova's age difference and his worries, but, not once did I feel Nova gave a fig about it and neither did anyone else it was all about what made this couple happy. No one is guaranteed tomorrow, so grab hold of happiness when it's right in your face.
Overall, we loved the ending and Nova's moms sound advice loved how Nova didn't settle and how she chose to live her life on her terms, even heartbroken she pursued her dreams. Nova figured out how to have the best of both worlds, and we loved that the most about her. Mack Nova will always keep you young in mind and spirit. It's never too late to find love and in finding Nova, Mack found the peace and happiness he rightly deserved...
You guys know I love me an age gap. Like, love love loooooove me an age gap. So when I saw this book, that it was an age gap, and grump/sunshine I thought "Brittany, this is the book for you!"
Now, I am having a love/hate relationship with this one. I also hate that because it makes it super complicated to write a proper review. I mean I liked it a lot in some place and in others I was like okay what is going on. Hell at one point this book had me in streaming tears. But alas, I was torn between utter devotion and just it's okay. Here's what I think has me torn up.
I love the idea of this book. Older dude, younger (but not too young) girl. He's been a mess for years because of issues if I tell you that will be spoilers. She's this free spirit who can't stay in one place. I thought their character points were great, but... Eventually I was getting sick of their shit and needed them to figure it out.
The book isn't extremely long, so I don't think stuff really got dragged out more than necessary but man I was agitated at these too. At one point I am so frustrated with the heroine I am thinking, "Girl, fuck him and just get out of there." Her pining for him started to seem desperate and he started to seem not worth it.
With that all being said, by the time I finally finished the book I didn't hate it. I still didn't like where the two them endlessly couldn't figure their shit out, but maybe that's what the author was going for. If so, then 10 stars because I totally felt all of that. So I'm giving it a 4.
Also its getting a 4 because I haven't read any of the other books in this series and now I kind of want to. So author gets points for being good enough to entice me into purchasing another book from her.
A sweet and very angsty romance... Mack's story begins as we find the family coming to terms with Kimberly's death. They've been without her in their lives for more than a decade, the impact of her leaving wounding them all deeply, and none more than her husband, Mack. [I still can't wrap my brain around what she did.] Her death is an opportunity for closure, but things are never that simple. All four children have found their matches, and Mack is finally releasing some of the ranch responsibilities over to them [this is a wonderful plot point imo] and offering guidance for them as they move forward... all are very responsible, but finding work/family balance is tough when all you've known is hard work. Enter Cricket's friend and assistant from New York, Nova Skye... a ray of sunshine and a free spirit... essentially, the polar opposite to Mack.
The character development in this fourth book is wonderful. It's the longest of the four books, which makes sense. We come to truly love Nova, and because we do [as does the rest of the town] we get to be frustrated with Mack's unwillingness to claim the woman. Much like his sons, there's always a hurdle that the MMC wants to keep reinforced, no matter what. For me, that is somewhat maddening. [I feel like the small town could benefit from a good therapist.] And there's a crisis point that really had me spitting nails at the MMC. However, the resolution is beautiful and complete.
When we finished this set, we have a large and growing family of characters that we care about... and some that we probably would read additional books to learn about.
I now know exactly where those Ryder boys get it from after reading Unraveling Mack.
Patriarch of the Ryder family Mack is more often than not a hard headed nut to crack, between the grief of his wife leaving him to raise their five children alone then subsequently passing away he’s been determined to never love again, don’t be fooled though, he’s had his need met over the years, after all he didn’t gain the name ‘Mack Daddy’ for no reason. What Mack wasn’t prepared for was the colourful, free spirited Nova, local waitress/bartender who just so happens to be his daughter-in-law’s friend, she’s also a good few years younger than him. Nova’s too young for him as far as he’s concerned so despite the chemistry between them, there’s no way Mack can allow himself to go there with her, well that’s what he tells himself to begin with, but there’s no avoiding the way he’s falling for the woman who’s crashed into his world like a breath of fresh air, she’s making him ‘feel’ again. Will Mack finally accept his feelings and trust Nova when she tells him she knows exactly what she wants and how she feels? Or will he keep pushing her away, not realising he’s been wrong in rejecting her until it’s too late?
Certainly was a case of ‘saving the best till last’ with this one, emotionally charged with great character interactions, some humour along with the ‘knock some sense’ into him moments, as well as the sexy times made Unraveling Mack a fantastic five star read you don’t want to miss.
Age gap, Grumpy/ Sunshine, and small-town romance are a fave.
What I loved about Rosy is she may be young but, she’s not naive nor submissive and she can hold her own. She had to put in a lot of work to unravel Mack.
He’s conflicted, he wants a life with her but believes he’s not enough. He’s an absolute stubborn mule. There’s no getting through to him to give it a go. Everyone and I mean everyone, his children, his friends, and pretty much everyone in this small town is telling him to go for it. They are well suited, chemistry, attraction all the good stuff but the mule needs to let her in.
Mack is a great human being, best dad, friend, and just an all-around good guy.
Having read Hoping for Hunter, Wishing for Wilder, and Missing Maverick i’ve been looking so forward to this fourth book! I was so glad Mack was getting his own book. I picked it up and got right back into the Ryder Ranch world! I so enjoyed this story!
Mack and Nova’s journey was quick to capture my attention! As these two are brought into each other’s lives and their attraction becomes hard to ignore, can they take a chance on one another? I couldn’t wait to see how it’d all play out for these two!
I really liked how Mack and Nova were different, the age gap aspect, and that i got to dig deeper with these characters, especially Mack! The chemistry between these two was great! I enjoyed getting to see how these two would tackle things. There was such realness to this story that got to me. I loved that i went through many emotions as well while reading!
It was awesome being back in the Ryder Ranch world! I enjoyed what the other characters brought to this story!
With Unraveling Mack Ryder, Ms.Brooks has created such a good read that brought many feels! I am so looking forward to more of her books!
*I volunteered to read and review a copy of this book from Wildfire Marketing Solutions / the author*
Talk about saving the best till last, this book had everything, romance, comedy, and heartache, you go through all kinds of emotions, but I loved it from the start till the end, I didn't want it to end.
This is Mack the father of all of the Ryder clan and Nova who is a close friend of Cricket, and works for her.
Mack and Nova met in the Pickled Pig where he goes for lunch and Nova thought he was grumpy so made it her mission to make him laugh. Mack was handsome so you could see where his boys got it from, he had raised them and their sister after their mum walked out of their lives years ago and since then he has been busy raising his children and run the ranch, no wonder he seemed grumpy.
The more time they spent together the more Nova liked him but he couldn't get close, he wasn't over his wife that had died a short while ago, and then there was the age difference, it didn't Bother Nova but it did him, he didn't want the gossips to talk about her seeing her with him.
Watch as the free spirited Nova turn Mack's life upside down and bringing him happiness again, I loved all of the books in this series but this one was just something else. 5 easy stars for this book.
This is book four in The Ryder Ranch Series and it is Nova and Mack's story. Mack doesn't do relationships or commitments after his wife left him to raise the children alone and all he does is scratch that itch when he needs to and then walk away until he meets Nova who makes him feel things that he hadn't felt for year's. Nova is a free spirit and a breath of fresh air along with sunshine and she loved life and never stayed in one place for long. When Mack and Nova met they had instant attraction and hot and intense chemistry between them that you could feel sizzling off the pages and I couldn't put this book down as it was a real page turner and takes you a roller coaster ride of emotions and is so addictive. Mack and Nova are so perfect for each other despite there are difference but will they get the happy ending that they both deserve or miss out on something special only time will tell what the outcome would be for them. I absolutely loved this book and definitely recommend you read it and you will not be disappointed.
Trope: Age gap, grumpy/sunshine, chosen family, small town romance
Nova is a younger woman who has wound up in this small town as part of her nomadic life. Little did she know, she would fall in love with much more than the town. Nova is a sweet a carefree woman who excels at spreading joy and her free spirit. Mack is a grumpy alphahole who just recently lost his estranged(?) wife and throws himself into his family and farm. These two are obviously perfect for each other, but met at the wrong time in each others lives and are currently their own worst enemies.
There are many emotions to feel throughout this book...rejection, shame, loss...but so much love (and mild spice) a long the way! I thoroughly enjoyed this read and would recommend it to anyone looking for sweeter age gap with turbulence along the way!
*This story deals with grief/loss and strong feelings of loneliness.
I’ve been looking forward to Mack’s book and it did not disappoint. Mack is grieving his wife for leaving him alone to raise their family and also for leaving this earth. He’s loving, sweet, hard working and a great father and has devoted his life to his kids, but when Nova peaks his interest, he becomes conflicted on how he should feel. Nova is a free spirit like her parents, never stays in one place too long, but when you're crushing on a man 20 years your senior, well what’s a girl to do? Nova is fun, relaxing, loving and wants to show Mack what he’s been missing out on, only to realize that he may not be able to let go of his past to move toward a new future full of love and happiness. I found this book on BookSprout.
Well that was quite the case of opposites attracting! Mack, distinguished older gentleman, totally predictable, don't rock the boat kind of guy meets the free spirited hurricane that IS Nova Skye, it shouldn't work, but together they spark! Once they drop all of the 'should do' and 'have to's' they each see just how perfectly they can fit together, all of their needs match up. Nova needs some type of structure, somewhere to belong, Mack needs to take care of someone, he needs to learn how to let go, which Nova can teach him. These two are awesome together, and now I can see where the boys learned how to treat someone, loved 'Mack Daddy' and sad to say goodbye to them, I'm hoping we'll see them again and catch up on their adventures!
If you have been reading this series then like me you have probably been waiting for Mack's story He is the closed off member of the family totally unwilling to let anyone in and he never even saw Nova coming. Not only is she half his age but she is also brimming with life willing to take on anything it offers and the total opposite to Mack Yes they are both products of what life has given them Mack's family loves to see the new Mack that Nova is bringing out but can he let his walls down enough to let her in and will he do it ion time or once again will he be the one left behind You will have to read to see if Mack finally gets his happy ever after and in the process we get to touch bases with all the other couples from the previous books in the series which is always a great thing
This is an amazing story. After Mack's wife walked out on him and the 4 children I could understand why he was so grouchy. Then you have Nova who is refreshing, young and spontaneous. I couldn't put this book down. They both had lots to work through as Mack was determined never to love and lose again. There was healing, grief and the spark that Nova brought to his life. Nova was a free spirit who knew what she wanted and wasn't going to settle for anything else. Will Mack be able to grab Nova before she flies away? Will they get their HEA? Fantastic story, loved it.

Unraveling Mack Ryder is my first book from this author, and it was awesome. A beautiful love story that included many tropes: age-gap, grumpy/sunshine, and small-town romance. Mack Ryder remained stuck with the past. Nova Skye spent every breath living in the moment. They were opposites; however, the attraction between them lit up their world like the 4th of July. The characters were wonderful and well-developed. I enjoyed reading Mack and Nova's story.

Unraveling Mack is a steamy, age gap read. Nova is a free spirit who is looking for someone to call home. She's adventurous and is independent, but vulnerable. Mack is a bit of a grump who is stuck in the past. He is the ultimate family man and has dedicated his life to protect, provide and support them. These two have intense chemistry and as different as night and day, they are the perfect match for what the other needs. I loved getting caught up with the rest of the Ryder clan and hope we get more of them soon!
Wonderful romance with some angst, drama and some sweetness to it. He is a bit older than her, little self conscious to her free spirit full of live personality. Totally opposite but love can conquer all. Will Mack finally open his eye to the best what’s happening to him? One thing bothered me too, the never open letter. Great read.

What a great book! It was an age gap story, heartwarming, and it tugged at your Heartstrings. This is Mack and Nova's story. She was a free spirit who when she need a change would change her hair style and her color. Mack was just trying to move on after the death of his wife .It is a great love story that and one that i did not want to end. 5 stars was not enough. Great job Anna!
