Maddie Ives #9

The Girls Upstairs

Rate this book
The girls are sleeping upstairs. If their parents make one wrong move, their daughters will die.

Emmy and her little sister Dani are sleeping in their bedroom upstairs. Their parents are in the kitchen.

A knife is jammed to their mother’s throat. Their father has a stack of kitchen plates balanced on his back.

The intruder rasps, ‘Don’t be breathing too hard now. I reckon smashing plates is the sort of noise that’ll wake a child. Have them coming down to see what’s going on. There can’t be witnesses . . .’

What Detective Maddie Ives will find in that nice family kitchen will horrify even this most hardened cop.

And she knows the victim . . .

There are 87 chapters in this "absolutely gripping crime thriller with a massive twist"...374 pages for the ninth Maddie Ives story from Charlie Gallagher.

I thoroughly enjoyed the previous entry in the series, The Girl Under The Floor, which was my introduction to the character and the author, a former serving Police Officer. I gave it a five star review advising  it was a well rounded tale that could stand alone with a beginning, middle and end...could the same be said of this latest release?

It certainly starts well - with imminent tragedy hinted at in the opening Chapter. Stylistically the novel starts with alternating chapters in third then first person (Police Officer/protagonist perspective)...this pattern changes at Chapter 7/8 with the entrance of Acting Detective Inspector Maddie Ives...but picks up again after that and we continue to see things from inside the mind of "the baddie" ...an interesting and twisted place it proves to be too. In Chapter 17 the convention changes and we get sections from both points of view, describing the same incident - the insight helping to display how the villains mental state is as they focus on planning for their next victim...the incidence reduces as we move deeper into the text but the relevance and clarity each brings is very rewarding for the reader

20% of the book in and I'm enjoying it as much as I did it's predecessor. The back stories for Maddie and her work partner , DI Harry Blaker give interesting counterpoints on the imminent impact of new birth and the painful legacy of recent loss.

From the halfway point the read became that genuine rarity, unputdownable (someone will doubtless put me down for that abuse of English, but hey, who's counting?)...the massive twist was both seen coming and then perhaps less so - when you read it you'll see what I mean...the closing Chapters resolving the loose ends are nicely done -no sense of any "rushing", excellent writing skills at play here.

Charlie Gallagher is on my "yes please" list going forward - very satisfying ”beginning, middle and end" standalone read even though it's within a series...bring on the next entry when you can please.

I am a massive fan of Charlie Gallagher and this book is an absolute winner.

My emotions ranged from shock, horror, disgust to absolute devastation – what a book.

It starts with the murder of a local bobby and just escalates from there. It is a real page turn, a real gritty thriller, action packed with lots of heart in the mouth drama.

The team of characters are just totally brilliant, love all their little quirks, feel like I know them all so well.

I could not put this book down.

Happy Reading.

Apart from giving my star rating I don't often write reviews, however this book demands that I do. I've read all of his books and Charlie Gallagher excels yet again with this latest in the Maddie Ives series. I found myself wanting to race to the end and yet dreaded getting there. I was holding my breath A LOT! I'm not going into the plot, if you haven't tried Mr Gallagher's books I encourage you to start straightaway, if you like crime thrillers/police procedurals you will will love these.

I thoroughly enjoyed this riveting and gripping read with its non stop drama. Police officers are being deliberately targeted and murdered. I loved the chapters expressing the thoughts of the mystery killer. I thought Eileen Holmans's slippers a nice touch which made me laugh. This is one not to be missed.

I am sure Charlie Gallagher is unable to write a bad book! Nine books into the Detective Maddie Ives series, and he still brings fresh, unique stories. The Girls Upstairs is the latest book, and I just couldn't put it down.

The great thing about this series is that every book is able to be read without the others. This is because this author makes sure that he incorperates enough information about the characters for the reader to understand everything as they read.

Always thrilling and fast-paced, this series never lets me down. Maddie and Harry find themselves on a case that involves hunting down a cop killer. That alone makes this an emotional case for them. As the story flies by, so do the twists and turns Charlie Gallagher revels in.

The tension I felt while reading really ramped up, and I was dying to find out everything. I have to say the quality of this authors storytelling is superb. He places everything perfectly to gain the most shock factor, like the conclusion. All I can say is be prepared!

Loved everything about this book. I can't recommend this highly enough. It's such a fabulous read!

As always, you can guarantee a brilliant, well written book by Charlie Gallagher. I've enjoyed all of his books, and even though I wouldn't have thought possible, I have to say yet again that this is the best one yet. Mind one part of the book, he had me upset and asked why, a character I'd grown to love, he would do such a thing.
This book has strong characters and good descriptive, and a roller coaster of twists and turns. It had me squirming in my seat, on the edge of it, biting my nails and thinking surely not, no,and why. It did keep me guessing as I read, and for a fleeting moment, I was right but totally dismissed it as quickly.
As always, DI Maddie Ives and Harry Blaker and the team are working hard dealing with two horrific murder scenes. These seem to point to someone having it in for the police. Eileen Holmes, the civilian analyst, seems to become even more needed in this one. None of them know how much danger lurkes as they race against time to stop anyone else from becoming a corpse.
I always have this author's books on pre-order, but I'd like to thank Joffe books.
This is my honest and unbiased review.

Having read all the books in this series, I was delighted to be offered this as an ARC.

For readers who have not read the previous books in the series, this can be read as a standalone, although to get insight into the characters it is preferable to read them in order.

It starts off with one of the characters in the first person, of which, I’m not really a fan, as it went backwards and forwards between this one character and the main characters. However, about a third of the way through it really opens up, and the story is so gripping and it’s a race against time and technology to trap this horrendous murderer. I was holding my breath in fear for what would happen. Coupled with fighting crime, Maddie and Harry have their own personal issues to deal with.

As I read it, it got more and more nail biting, with technology at the fore, no one is safe. However, Eileen was a true trooper as usual and helped out immensely.

I feel I can’t go into any more detail without spoiling the plot, but I do hope Charlie carries on with this series, as Maddie is one of my favourites.

My thanks to Charlie & Joffe Books for the ARC.

Wow what a read.
In a tiny, quiet town, a policeman is lured to his death in the village hall.
As we all know, police don't take well to one of their own being killed.
However when two young girls are asleep upstairs, it is about to get worse.
Maddie and Harry start to get frustrated as there is obviously a killer out for the police. They are very clever and leave them nothing to go on.
Luckily they have Eileen, an absolute legend. What a character. Walking around in her carpet slippers, sharp as a whip and no nonsense. What's not to love. She stole every scene she was in.
This was no mean feat. Both Maddie and Harry have their own issues outside of the case.
Ryan I felt sorry for and Chloe was evil. Although I hate books that say there is a huge twist, they were correct and I didn't see it coming.
Unusually for a crime book, I cried too. Omg. One scene is so powerful. I could feel the raw emotion.
A great, clever relentless story. The pace doesn't slacken at any points. All the characters are well rounded and you really get invested in their stories. Despite being book 9 in the series, you'd have no problem reading this as a standalone. Which you absolutely should do!

I might need some heart or anxiety medication after this one! The Girls Upstairs by Charlie Gallagher is an intense murder mystery novel that will have you sitting at the edge of your seat from the first chapter. Plus, just when you think you have it figured out, you find out you absolutely do not. This story is told in multiple perspectives that change each chapter, which absolutely maximizes suspense!
Follow along with detectives as they try to solve a string of brutal murders. In small, sleepy villages, the violence is out of place... but the only glaring link between the two scenes is that the victims are cops. Evidence discovered at the second crime scene proves that the killer died with his victims, but things don't quite add up...

This one is a wild ride. Charlie Gallagher certainly planned these murd...I mean this book out meticulously! Thank you, #NetGalley for early access to The Girls Upstairs in exchange for an honest review, I'll send you the bill for my heart meds😅🤣😂

The Girl upstairs by Charlie Gallagher.

I love this series. This is one of my favourite authors. I loved the cover. This series just gets better and better. I really did enjoy this book. Maddie I loved her character. Action from the start. Kept me gripped from page one. I did love Eileen and how she was. It wasn't who I thought it was. I did love the ending. I do hope there is more to come. 5*.

What a delightful treat to be introduced to this series! Rest assured, The Girls Upstairs is a completely standalone novel. When a call goes horribly wrong and a police officer dies, DI Maddie Ives has another tough day on the job when she must deliver the news to the family. And the days keep getting tougher, when they realize this attack was personal. The beginning is a bit slow but establishes that this is a team of officers who know what they are doing and do it well! However, when the action builds with a targeted home invasion- yikes! The action and anticipation does not stop! The clock is ticking to solve the mystery behind these attacks and prevent anyone else from dying!

In "The Girls Upstairs" by Charlie Gallagher, the atmosphere crackles with tension as Emmy and Dani sleep unaware upstairs while their parents confront a menacing intruder downstairs. With suspense that grips from the first page and twists that keep you guessing, this standalone thriller is a white-knuckle ride from start to finish.

DI Maddie Ives finds herself embroiled in one of her most challenging cases yet after a police officer tragically dies in a botched call, triggering a series of personal attacks. As Maddie and her team race against the clock to unravel the mystery behind the targeted home invasions, Gallagher expertly crafts a narrative that leaves readers hooked.

Gallagher's writing style is gripping, with concise chapters that leave you craving more. Through multiple perspectives, including that of the elusive killer, the story unfolds with a relentless pace, adding layers to the cat-and-mouse game of this crime fiction thriller.

Even for those new to Gallagher's series, "The Girls Upstairs" offers a compelling standalone experience, complete with well-developed characters and just the right amount of backstory to keep you fully invested. It's a testament to Gallagher's storytelling prowess that even at book 9, readers can jump in and be thoroughly entertained.

Many thanks to NetGalley for providing an ARC of this captivating novel in exchange for an honest review.

A must read! This book is absolutely amazing. It has so much content. From the start there are hints that violence is in the offing but I never for a moment thought there would be so much of it.

As usual, Charlie, you capture your readers from the very start, never giving them the chance to lose interest.

I was surprised by the amount of murders committed. There was always the will they/won’t they scenario. Will the victims survive, will the murderer be disturbed etc.

The way the scenes are set are amazing with some brilliant red herrings.

I finished this book early hours of this morning and still feel anxious butterflies and a tightening of the tummy muscles at two in the afternoon.

This is one of my favourite book series, so I was delighted to hear another book was being written.

This story was centred on the brutal murders of police officers and the investigation into who was carrying out these murders and why.

The story was very well written, and I believe the author was a serving officer himself, so the police procedure is always extremely interesting to read. My favourite part of this series is the partnership and friendship of Harry and Maddie, which went up a notch in the last book with the arrival of Eileen, who has quickly risen to my favourite character. Who doesn't want to go to work in their slippers!!

This story had me laughing, angry and also crying which is incredibly rare for me. Yes you can read as a stand alone, however to fully appreciate the story its best to read in order, which, trust me, is not a chore as its one of the best series I have read.

DIs Maddy Ives and Harry Blaker are back, investigating the murder of one of their own. PC Jones, a rural PC was called to look into reports of youths throwing stones at a village hall, he arrives to find the place deserted, but the door to the hall is open, so he goes in. Whilst inside his patrol car is attacked, he can’t get back outside as the door is held fast, when it is opened he is attacked.
This well written story is full of twists and drama, including Harry ending up in hospital. All in all a book worth reading.

I’m both fuming and completely jovial with myself for reading this novel as fast as I did. the maddie ives series is one of my all time favourite series EVER! and this novel is no different.

I was both completely devastated and hooked by this book and the continuous new turns taken though out. the tech route and smart modern turn in this one was refreshing and completely interesting in contrast to the rest of the series. on top of all that, reading the series from the start to this point, and watching each character develop and change together is so fun, I KNOW these character and love it all the more for it.

I’m obsessed with Charlie Gallagher and his ways and am already biting my nails waiting for the next one to come!

I have read all of the Maddie Ives novels so far, and this is the most terrifying I have read. I had to pause it at times as I found it too intensive... Clever but also very manic... Be prepared and take a serious good breath before you open this one! Thanks NetGalley for the advanced copy. #THEGIRLSUPSTAIRS #NetGalley
