Faith in Whose Body and Blood?

When feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or self-condemnation set in, some people seek painful release in their own flesh and blood. While cutting can bring temporary relief, it falls far short of the genuine change that is essential to true healing of the heart.

Through the direct and honest example of one young woman’s story, Jeremy Lelek points those in such pain to the sufferings of Jesus Christ and the finished work of the cross as their means of hope, security, and healing. He helps them to turn from trusting in their own body and blood to trusting in the body and blood of Jesus, which alone has the power to bring true freedom.

THE GOSPEL FOR REAL LIFE booklet series by the Association of Biblical Counselors (ABC) applies the timeless hope of Christ to the unique struggles of modern believers.

“The gospel isn’t just an ethereal idea. It’s not a philosophy and it’s not static. It moves and shapes and transforms. I am grateful for ABC’s work of letting the gospel bear its weight on these real life sorrows and pains.”
—Matt Chandler, Lead Pastor, The Village Church, Flower Mound, Texas

Jeremy Lelek is president of the Association of Biblical Counselors and of Metroplex Counseling in Dallas, Texas; adjunct professor at Redeemer Seminary in Dallas; and council member of the Biblical Counseling Coalition.

A very helpful resource. The Gospel Reality section on True Freedom and Being Found in Christ was an excellent reminder that "the finished and completed work of Jesus Christ is the exclusive means to ultimate freedom from our deepest ills" (p. 17). We desire to eradicate compulsive behavior, conquer deceitful thoughts, remove the failures of our daily performance, and control our unruly obsessions, but freedom from these things can only be found by grace through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ (p. 17). In him alone, we move from a life of "penance to one of repentance, and from slavery to perfection" (p. 17). His work is what perfects and transforms us--making us a new creation.

The story of “Justine” was a little more indepth/ graphic than I thought necessary.

His list of 5 things to recognize on pgs 28-30 are helpful to consider/teach upon. I also appreciated his warning about moving to quickly to the heart/ put off & put on without spending much time looking into the heart and hope of the gospel for the cutter.

I would not give this to a counselee to read on their own- but it could be considered an ok resource for those counseling.

Stereotypical example. Stereotypical regurgitation of the gospel. Stereotypical misuse of certain scriptures.
Entirely unamazing.
Little stands out, even less stands out positively.
This book does nothing to further the fight against self-injury and is identical in content to any other generic Christian self-help book.

Pass on the book if you've ever read any basic theology.
