S.S. Paradise #1

A Love Beyond the Stars

Rate this book
Aurelia Castillo has spent her whole life looking to the stars. She's looked forward to her first day as a Pilot for years, and it’s finally happening. Her commission is on the newly chartered starship, the S.S. Paradise. Only her new Captain turns out to be a grump who thinks she has no business being a part of his starship's crew, even though she flew through flight school with flying colors. It doesn't quite feel like a paradise when your boss hates you and you're millions of light years away from the only home you've ever known. Until suddenly, he's not looking at her like she's less, but rather, more...

Captain Sylas Kellar didn't see it coming. He didn’t see her coming. Not the daughter of his childhood icon, nor his attraction to her. And he shouldn't, shouldn't want her. It’s his first command as Captain, and he really doesn’t want to screw this up. Not when he has to prove himself to the world. But he can't resist the tension between them, and the ever-constant close proximity between them has him losing his mind. Which begs one what happens when he gives in?

In a world beyond the stars, can the two find a love that will last a lifetime?

A Love Beyond the Stars is a science-fiction romance featuring open-door, explicit sex scenes and adult language. It is a standalone romance featuring a grumpy space captain and his sunshine first pilot falling in love as they travel the galaxy.

I love a good space romance and this one was so fun!! Aurelia gets a spot as a pilot on a spaceship that will be in space for five years. She immediately butts heads with the grumpy captain who doesn't think she's competent enough for the spot since she just graduated flight school. She's not afraid to stand up to him, though, and they slowly develop a friendships that leads to more.

The setting of this one was so fun and I loved how forced proximity it was since they literally could never escape each other. We see Sylas be brooding and grumpy and slowly lower his walls as he is falling for Aurelia, even though he doesn't want to. We get plenty of steam and also emotional moments since Aurelia lost her dad so a space mission and Sylas and his sister were left by their parents.

The ending was adorable and I really hope we get more books in this world!! If you want a hate to love sci-fi romance with a hero that reminded me sooo much of Chris Pine in space, pick this up!!

DNF at 46%, sadly. I really wanted to like this, but I have to throw in the towel.

This had a really interesting premise imo: a romance between a spaceship captain and his subordinate (grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity, slight age gap, the heroine is the daughter of the hero's idol, etc.), but this really fell short for me. There is so much insta-lust (bordering on insta-love) that I was super bored. The main characters are obsessed with each other immediately; there's no tension or banter. The couple is lusting over each other from the beginning, and I felt like they didn't even know each other.

I also wasn't into the overall plot enough to care about continuing. The FMC is in search of her father who has been missing for 10 years, but every decision she makes is awful. The FMC's decisions are starting to make her seem TSTL (too stupid to live). Every decision she made which led to her getting stranded on this planet was so impossibly stupid. She comes across as a bit cocky, entitled, immature, and stupid. She's also horny at the weirdest times.

Meanwhile, he comes across as a simp, but like, not in a cute way (in an eye-roll way). He basically threw away his entire career in a few short chapters for a younger woman (who makes stupid decisions) who he thinks is hot.

3.5 stars!

this was cute - it’s a sci-fi, workplace romance where they’re stuck on a spaceship for a five year long mission together - my kind of forced proximity.

i wish this gave a little more slow burn + tension and build up but this is a quick and cute read to get in the fall mood

he falls first you will always be loved by me

Con el romance siempre soy: Monogamia!! Matrimonio!! Familia!!!

EVERYONE!!! STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING!! ANOTHER JENNIFER CHIPMAN BOOK JUST DROPPED!!!

A Love Beyond the Stars by Jennifer Chipman is an adventurous sci-fi romance between a starship captain and his head pilot. I devoured this book in one sitting, I couldn’t get enough. It has amazing plot, fluff, spice, and lovable characters!

Aurelia is our smart and headstrong pilot that graduated top of her class and seems to be able to do everything perfectly. She is following in her father’s footsteps who is infamous among the space community. Her father went missing on a mission when she was a young girl and hasn’t been found since. This has pushed her through her schooling and kept her motivated - that she can maybe find out what happened to her father and his ship. Aurelia’s grief is talked about a lot and I love that the subject of grief was discussed so openly and rawly.

Sylas is our grumpy, muscular, and equally stubborn captain that has abandonment issues. He immediately doesn’t like Aurelia and tries to get her kicked off the starship before the mission begins. She proves to him that she’s worthy to stay, even though it’s her very first mission. There is delicious tension between them as they start a 5 year journey through the stars with their crew and are forced to work in forced proximity of each other.

-age gap
-grumpy x sunshine
-sci-fi romance
-captain x head pilot
-“little star”
-spicy AND fluffy
-forced proximity
-tending to wounds
-he washes her hair
-space alien pet
-on a starship
-forbidden love

I rated this a 4.5/5 stars and a 3.5/5 spice! So dang good and highly recommend if you’re usually a romance girly and wanting to test the waters of sci-fi. Can’t wait to see where the S.S. Paradise series goes! ✨

✨ARC Review✨

First and foremost, I am in love with the cover and aesthetics of this book.

This book was cute. And if you're looking for a cute, quick and easy read about space lovin' then this will be perfect. But for me, there were a few things missing.

Everything (plot, characters, developments) started off looking pretty promising. I was intrigued and ready to see what was going to happen on this 5 year mission. I think in my mind this was going to be some romance with action packed mystery and I just think I read the room wrong.

Aurelia was chasing a dream that was inspired by her father. She wants to know what happened to him 13 years ago and she wants to live out her dreams in honor of him. I liked her character. I thought she was driven and smart and loved that she was just ready to seize the day.

Sylas was the grumpy Captain who was grumpy for all of two seconds. I wasn't buying the whole "he's mean and looking to ruin my life" act. I think he was just as soft as every other character in this book. I did like him but I wasn't in love with him.

Together they were cute but I couldn't feel a connection or spark between them. It just felt like the forced proximity of the plot was the only thing making these two work. At times, it was cringe and corny and I was a tad underwhelmed.

For 5 years on a ship together, they start this relationship rather quickly and the relationship/character developments felt a little too fast for my liking. If you don't care about that then you have a super cute romance book! If you want more depth, try something else.

I love a book with spice, but I feel like we may have had more than we needed? Like, it felt too much at the most random times...

Towards the end, I was getting a little bored. I think it's because I wanted more action in this plot. Aurelia's father storyline could have been built bigger or we could have gotten more suspense with that. There was an opportunity there for sure.

But again, this was strictly a romance book about their romance. Totally fine, if that's what you are looking for!

I wanted to be obsessed with this like I am with the cover but sadly, this fell a little short for me. I do think it was cute at times but a lot was missing for me that I personally would have liked to see.

We do get cute otter dogs...so take that for what you will.

This was really one of the worst books I ever read. I've read it, and I still don't know what the true objective of the space mission was. They spend five years in space living a leisurely life because the spaceship even has a built-in cinema. The male lead is grumpy but changes his mind 20% into the book and randomly tells her he's broken the first time they have a conversation.

But let's be real, I think he had a genuine reason to not like her at the beginning. She was handed that position on a silver platter. She is straight out of the academy, has never flown a spaceship, yet they make her head captain? Her original assignment was the second pilot. Couldn't she have just gotten that on this ship? It makes zero sense to give the main position to someone who only has experience on a freaking simulator. There were other more experienced pilots on the ship, yet she's the head pilot? WTF?

Then it turns out the ship mostly runs itself, so what even was her role here? What even was the plot? I thought it would be about the five-year mission, but I thought wrong. Then we focus on her lost dad for a hot second, which doesn't even make sense because it's said they're going to an unexplored part of space where no one else has been. But somehow her dad's ship was there? Biggest plot hole ever.

Honestly, the whole thing was a plot hole because nothing made any sense. Especially not their relationship. They don't like each other for a full two minutes and then suddenly they're each other's everything. Ugh, give me a break. This was so cheesy. And the fact that they got married after knowing each other for three months—points gun at myself and pulls the trigger. It took me longer to decide what kind of bed frame I wanted than for them to decide they want to get married and then immediately have kids.

Their relationship is supposedly forbidden, but it really wasn't because they said "screw the rules" after ten minutes. Also, all their scenes are basically them saying the same things, then having sex. It was the most boring thing ever.

In the end, A Love Beyond the Stars is a letdown. The characters aren't interesting, the plot is confusing, and the romance feels fake. The only good thing about the book is its cover, which isn't enough to save it. If you want a good space romance, this isn't it.

A Love Beyond the Stars is a futuristic, sci-fi romance that takes place on a starship between a captain and his first pilot! This also is a forbidden relationship, age gap (10 years), and has grumpy x sunshine vibes!

Aurelia graduates as a pilot for the United Galactic Space Federation when the story starts and she’s so excited when she gets assigned as a pilot on researcher mission to the outer reaches of space. She’s excited to follow in her famous, pilot father’s footsteps. She meets Sylas, captain of the ship she’s assigned to and they have banter right from the start! This cute read has a ton of micro tropes: “there’s only one cave”, she’s the daughter of his childhood hero (he even has a photo of him on his wall growing up), caretaking scenes, they adopt an alien animal, he calls her “little star”, she wears his clothes, no one can sit in his chair but her!

He’s a bit of a stubborn grump at first and she’s a bit of a brat (which he calls her often)! This is set in the future (3051) but it doesn’t feel like it, I kinda wanted it to lean more into sci-fi and futuristic vibes but that’s just my sci-fi loving heart lol! He fall first and tries to push her away before eventually giving in. Lots of spice and steamy times, which did take me a bit to get into, but they’re such a cute couple in the end! The cover and art and all the buzz words definitely sold me on this one and the read was both adorable and spicy!

I received an ARC, all thoughts in this review are my own!

"...'Cause sometimes I look in her eyes and that's where I find a glimpse of us..."

I loved this book! The romance is very good, hate to love kind of

Sylas Kellar, the man that you are and don’t even know it 🤭

The relationship between Aurelia and Sylas was very cute, sweet, caring, and spicy. The little ‘sci-fi mystery adventure’ was also fun.

The ending was very endearing 🥰 I want the books of the other characters already, for yesterday please!!

The only thing that took the .5 rating of this book from being a 5 star, was that sometimes some of the phrasing threw me off, I was reading very invested and then at some parts I just got stuck a little by the phrasing of some scenes, but nothing too bothering, just some tiny bits

first of all thanks to the author for sending me the arc and give me the oportunity to read the book before hand ♡

I’ve been dying for a “star trek but a romance novel” type book, but this one read more like a young adult novel trying to cosplay as one. Earth’s newest and most advanced spaceship going on the longest mission to date into unexplored territory…and it’s led by a bunch of 20-something college buddies with exactly enough pretty young women to match, who don’t do any on page work of any note, but plenty of on page reality TV watching. The only adventure to be had are result of completely off the wall choices made by the characters themselves. These are people who are supposedly at the top of the game in their careers and they do stuff that is so insanely stupid a teenager working the cash register at Jack in the Box would know better. There is no actual adult on this ship. It’s like if the CW made Star Trek.

thanks a lot for the advance copy!

i've never really read a sci-fi romance before, but i had to give it a chance because i enjoyed jennifer’s other books. it was a little different from what i'm used to, but i still had a great time reading it.

aurelia has just graduated from flight academy and has been given her dream assignment - a five year mission on the s.s. paradise. it'll follow a similar path to the one her father disappeared on years ago, and she's hoping to finally get some answers…

sylas is not so happy about her new role as head pilot. the s.s. paradise is his dream too - he's finally been named captain and doesn't want anyone to mess it up for him. he's very much attracted to her at first but tries to fire her anyway, claiming she's too inexperienced. luckily, she manages to change his mind, and they all set off on their space journey together.

the small quarters and an impromptu trip to a mysterious planet create a turning point in their relationship - they finally act on their feelings for one another and have a great time (especially when they visit a certain cave…).

i thought their relationship was cute, but i wasn't as connected to them as i would have liked. i did like the forbidden romance elements, though - it made the story really interesting reading about them sneaking around together for little stolen moments.

the romance was definitely the main focus of this story, but i wish there was a little more action. it would have been nice seeing them all work together as a team. i also wish we got some more answers to the big mystery - it just got a little overshadowed by sylas and aurelia's relationship.

i would still recommend this book, especially if you're looking for a cute, quick, and easy read that's both sweet and spicy!!

- sci-fi romance
- captain x head pilot
- forced proximity
- grumpy x sunshine
- forbidden romance
- boy obsessed
- age gap
- dual pov

My little nerdy, Star Trek loving heart was ecstatic when Jennifer Chipman announced she was doing a love story on a spaceship! This story was such a fun journey! The way that the ship was described along with space, made me feel like I was on this 5 year mission with them!

Sylas and Aurelia got off to a bumpy start with their first meeting but the chemistry between them was undeniable. Sylas carries the burden of protecting everyone on the ship along with being the captain they need him to be. It is strictly forbidden for officers to be in relationships with each other. Unfortunately, he can’t get his head pilot, Aurelia, out of his mind.

Aurelia has lived her whole life for this moment. She is finally a pilot of a ship heading into deep space for a multi-year mission. Aurelia is keeping some secrets from everyone. She will do anything to find out what happened to her father whose ship never returned home. She wants to be the best pilot she can be, but that’s not easy when the Captain of the ship hates you.

The spice in this book was literally out of this world. Sylas and Aurelia could not keep their hands off of each other. I love the “forbidden romance” trope and this book did it really well! Spice level is a solid 4🌶️, so make sure you apply some SPF before reading this book so you don’t BURN! 🤣🥵

All of the officers were such great side characters and I seriously CANNOT wait for them to hopefully get stories of their own!

This was super cute & fluffy and I really enjoyed how fast paced it was. I love a grumpy x sunshine story & how they’ll completely go from an absolute grump to completely soft & head over heels for the fmc & that’s exactly what happened here 🤭

I definitely wasn’t expecting this book to be as spicy as it was 😅 some of the spice & dialogue were a bit cringy in some parts & there were some inconsistencies with the plot imo. I do wish there had been more tension between them since their relationship was meant to be forbidden, I hoped there would have been a bit more angst but that’s just me. I also felt their adventures were a bit too “safe” & wish those parts had been a bit more “high risk” since space is supposed to be dangerous & unpredictable.

Overall, I really liked the concept of the story the author was trying to tell & I thought this was good read!

- Starship captain x head pilot
- Grumpy x sunshine
- 10 year age gap

What to Expect
• scifi romance
• set in outer space
• captain | pilot
• grumpy | sunshine
• forbidden
• age gap

After a run-in in the beginning of the book, Aurelia is quick to take her stand against the grumpy, a hole captain of their starship, Sylas. But not all is what it seems, because when I tell you that he becomes gone for her, he is light years beyond where I thought he would have been based off first impressions. He is a teddy bear that loves to put his brat into place, and when the spice hit, it really hit 🥵 The story was cute, but not fluffy; I usually cannot do sugary sweet. There was a sad point to the plot I was not expecting, but overall this was a really fun, different ride of a book that I highly recommend! 💫

Based off the premise alone I thought I would enjoy this but the book didn’t really build up to any type of believable relationship. Both characters were immediately obsessed with each other beyond just an initial attraction. The first third of the book was very slow just a lot of back and forth will they/wont they with nothing else really going on in the narrative. The romance was forbidden which was supposed to be intriguing but the characters inner dialogue was almost completely based on that and got tiring. Once the book finally reached an interesting point I just ended up becoming annoyed with the FMC who made bad choices over and over which really didn’t fit with the someone graduating at the top of their class. It definitely did have its clever and sweet moments which got it the three stars but the narrative could have used some more refining.

Such a cute and spicy romance! I loved this adorable space romance book, and would highly recommend it, especially if you love:

Aurelia Callisto just graduated from flight school and gets assigned to fly the S.S. Paradise where she meets grumpy af Captain Sylas Keller. They have a not so meet cute but there’s no denying the instant attraction even when it’s forbidden. On a 5-year mission to explore space and in close proximity no less, lines are sure to be blurred.

This book is a freaking gem.. or one of those rare galactic space crystals. 🤭 If you like Star Trek but thought it needed maybe a bit more romance, this one is for you!

This was a cute and spicy read! I loved all the characters, the alien-pet creatures, the side plot. The tension between Aurelia and Sylas was scrumptious—I ate it up. They are the definition of grumpy x sunshine and boy did he fall hard. They were opposites but complemented each other well. I love that he could be sweet (only for her), knows and anticipates her needs, and was willing to do anything for her. They both have their baggage and I love how they came together and made it work. And the epilogues?? Truly a star-shooting blessing when you just want your characters living life and having a happily ever after. 🥹💖

As I was reading, I was looking for clues on potential next couples, so I hope there will be more books! 🤞🏼

Did I mention that the book itself is beautiful?? I am so impressed and it’s clear Jennifer put a lot of thought into it. I was freaking out every time I turned the page. From the cover to the dedication, the playlist, chapter opener layout, and even the paragraph design thingy with the space ship—I am obsessed!!

My inner Star Trek girlie was so excited for this read. Sadly it was a major letdown. The MMC was such a simp for the FMC—but in the cringiest, most annoying way. It was to the point of him not being able to make sound decisions as Captain solely because of how ‘stunningly perfectly hot’ he thought she was… and the FMC was *so* reckless and stupid for being a woman in STEM, having graduated at the top of her class, blah blah blah.

I understand that her searching for her father / getting closure over his disappearance 13 years ago was a part of her story, but they committed to a five-year mission on a vessel housing 500+ people. I couldn’t get past her selfish, emotional knee-jerk decision that resulted in putting herself and others at risk all for her own personal mission—which she was not being transparent about with anyone except the Captain (though, not right away). He, of course, just protects and enables her because eff the crew, I guess. 👍🏼

Also, there was zero plot to this story. Which is fine and sometimes what I’m in the mood for, but it really felt like this book had *nothing* to offer other than boring, annoying characters, minimal character development, and a ridiculous amount of smutty content. I am no prude and can absolutely appreciate spice in my books, but I got to a point of skimming and skipping through pages by the end with how often these two went at each other.

Like, what was the purpose of this story?? I couldn’t tell ya!
