Most of the prologue is of the scenes that gutted me in the previous book but it's a vital link in describing the events about to unfold... starting with the capture of Rosita and her young brother, spanning to Tonio who will go to great lengths to save and free his friend, to Giddi trying to find a way to close the world gate, which he and Mazyka unwittingly opened... and as each of the scenes are played out, so I'm drawn further and further on a spectacular journey! This book traverses the realms seamlessly, carrying me to new heights of intrigue, betrayal, heartache, utterly decimating me at times, amusing me at others, to bring me a beautifully diverse and rich world, with beautifully diverse and rich characters, with a plot and pacing that can only be described as magical!
Eileen has a superb knack for creating the most awesome relationships between human and dragon, some of the easiest, most light hearted and exceptionally loving relationships I've come across. It's more than a bond, it's a protectiveness and teasing that is simply outstanding. A genuineness that's doesn't feel forced. It just...flows..it just FITS. Even when things are so tense an embolism would be more likely, Ms Meuller releases the tension with utmost ingenuity, the banter is, once again, some of the best I've read. Case in point, our human MC Tonio and our dragon MC Antonika....but although they are TECHNICALLY the MC's, so many other characters play a pivotal role. They burrow under your skin, ALL of them! I can't express my delight at reacquainting myself with Giddi and Mazyka and even Starrus! And Rusty and Star and Will, yep, the whole bang shoot! And I still feel the heartbreak of loss though, knowing Balovar was no more...but let's concentrate on the one's who are! Tonio has grown into his role as Spymaster superbly, HE'S grown up superbly. I love how compassionate he is, how he uses his skill to perfection. His confidence has grown, his understanding of, well everything has grown but he's never lost who he is at his core.
Rosita, although now a slave to the vile Emperor, treated like scum, her spunk remains, her resolve, in a sea of desolation, remains. But I sobbed, oh heavens did I sob! The injustice! The cruelty! The pain I felt matched Rosita's, like a blade through my gut, so devastated was I! In fact, her ENTIRE situation gutted me, even the Seng thing... I was thrilled she had someone kind to lean on, BUT he didn't turn out quite as noble as I thought... and there you have it! This author never lets me assume, never allows me to think "oh I see that!" because what I DO see and what bops me over the head, are completely different things! And I love it!!! I love how Eileen spins everything until my own head is spinning, not knowing in which direction to go! So I follow the narrative oh so willingly, through every twist and turn, watching it come together, watching the developing events, riveted and relishing it all!
The world gate is still open, the monsters are still coming through, the dragon realm is still at threat of being eliminated, all because of one man, Zens, a man who though performs despicable deeds, evokes a deep sympathy right in my soul! Weird I know, but there's so much that HAPPENED to him, so much done TO him, heck yeah, I cry for him. This book highlights all the differences in the 'classes', the politics playing out behind the scenes, the growth of the cast throughout the series, with incredible insight into every character, be they dubious of character or not. She gives each of them "soul" each a complete story of their background and gosh they've all had dreadful events in their past to deal with and still release. In every Meuller book I've read, it's a given that I'll soar as the dragons depicted in her books. I'll chew in delight on the words leaping from the pages, some don't taste as sweet as others, let's face it, WHO wants to chew on the Starrus, who tries to get rid of Giddi HOWEVER he can! Yeah, that's for spitting out, not swallowing! I love the "lightness" of her books, though the theme and plot veer towards the dark at times, she keeps the light burning bright!
So, my only question would be, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR??? Pick up this excellent book AND series and fall into a wondrous world, one you won't want to leave....
Ms. Mueller once again brings the dragon riders realm to life, as we travel with Tonio the new spymaster of dragon's realm as he embarks a personal quest. He ventures forth across the Kingdom and across the Naobian Sea in search of his best friend's family who have vanished and are feared dead. He knows Rosita and her family from his childhood and he too fears for her safety. He discovers she has been taken and sold as a slave by the Scarlet Hand, the feared pirate and his band of the Bloody Cutlasses, to work in the mines of Emperor Haakin. Tonio gets help on his quest from Star, a ferocious sailor and Vreni, a wind mage, however all three harbour dark secrets from their past. Whilst under cover in the Emperor's Palace during the Festival of Delights, all their plans come undone as plans are wont to do seeming to have a mind of their own. So the battle to free the slaves from deep in the highly secured mines turns into a massive heart-stopping one as they all risk their lives in the hope of making it out alive. Suddenly enemies turn to allies, and help comes from the most unexpected people. During all of this turmoil Tonio falls in love with Rosita, the girl he'd ventured out to save, Sam's cousin. I love this heart stopping tale, full of courage and perseverance as well as a beautiful budding romance. I am dying to read the next book in this series which is one of my favourite reads ever as Ms. Mueller brings her dragons to life and into her readers hearts.
Eileen Mueller does it again..yet another magical story from Dragons Realm. Tonio the new Dragons Realm Spymaster embarks on a personal mission when his best friend Sam asks him to find his cousin Rosita and her family. He discovers Rosita and family have been snatched from the boat they were on by one of the Scarlet Hands pirate boats and sold into slavery to work in Emperor Haakins gold mine. Gathering allies including Star and Vreni they set off across the Naobian Sea to try and rescue Rosita from the gold mine. Meanwhile Commander Zens and his Tharuks are also taking people as slaves to work in his mine. Dragons and their riders and the mages including Giddi are fighting battle after battle to eradicate the Tharuks and trying to rescue people. If your looking to read a book that is full of wonderful charismatic Dragon Riders and snarky humorous Dragons, with plenty of action, intrigue, betrayal, love and danger then this is the book for you. When you finish this one, go and get the rest of the books in the series, you wont be disappointed.
It is hard to imagine a book more enigmatic than this book, Dragon Spymaster by Eileen Mueller. Rosita and Tomo, having been been abducted by the Scarlet Hand, had a dire future ahead of them to mine gold at the emperor's goldmine, if not for some serendipitous care received from unexpected sources at times least expected but needed the most. As events subsequently proved when a rescue mission got launched to save the abductees. Secrets abound and each one proved to be rather momentously earth shaking as these secrets get revealed. Such as Vreni proved. And Star. And Seng. And Tonio. And Takoda. And Marius. And even the very same Scarlet Hand who abducted Rosita previously. Small wonder I finished this book in somewhat of a personal record time, though broadly smiling too. Enjoy.
Rosita was in the middle of the open ocean when Pirates attacked the ship she was on. Her father put her and her little brother under the bed and her mother got in front of her. They told her not to let her little brother, Tomo make any noise and for her to not say anything. In hopes that the pirates may miss them. The Pirates didn't miss her and her parents were dead. This sets the whole course of the book. Back to the present day Tonio the Dragon Spymaster has learned that the disappearance of Rosita and her family from his best friend growing up Sam. He goes to find and save her and her family. Ms. Mueller has written another excellent book and I highly recommend you read it...
An interesting confusing next tale in the story of the realm
While the stories told are interesting, I struggled with two aspects. 1. Each novel fills in details of events that occured in other Dragon's Realm novels. This sometimes it feels as though I am rereading the portion of the story. 2. Yet again, the romances described in this book left me uncomfortable, embarrassed, and disheartened. I have no interest in learning about the deep passions, as well as the near tragedies of sex that occurs more and more frequently in these books.
I will continue to read until I can no longer justify the offensive portions.
I have enjoyed each book in the series, and this one is no exception. I love how Author Mueller brings the characters to life and lets readers see them from different perspectives.
Starting with a bang (or a capture rather) we get to see Tonio as he tries to save family friends from the Bloody Cutlasses. But more is in store as other characters are in the mix as well.
Plans come unhinged (as they often do), love happens, derring do, dragons and more.
A good read. And we return to fighting Zens and his Tharuks, and the evil Haakin and Vizza. The story of Tonio, and his coming of age as the Spymaster. With Giddi leading the attack on Zens in the Spanglewood Forest, and Tonio away on a mission to rescue old friends, captured by Captain Scarlett Hand and now imprisoned in the gold mines of Vizza and Haakin. If you’ve read any of the series, you need to read this too. It’s worth it!
lots of action, peril, excitement for Tonio and Rosita
In this series, I’m partial to the dragon riders parts of the story. In this book 7, the pirates and slaves part ramps up to meet it. Good, fast paced storytelling. Good connection between characters. Interesting relationship between Rosita and Seng, unexpected. It’s 4 stars for me because of the constant changes from one storyline and point of view to another, which interrupted flow. One more story to go!
Secrets! This author has the ability to paint, a picture for you, so you can envision what is happening throughout this fast paced, action, adventure. The wonderful characters are brought to life in this unpredictable, easy to read, enjoyable story where secrets will be revealed and there are hints of romance.
I loved the line about our scars making us better. Rosita was certainly scarred by everything she went through and lost. Strong and brave heroine. Tonio is just adorable as the MMC. I can't help but root for the Scarlet Hand and hope he finds a way out. The characters are realistic and love deeply. I can't wait to see how it all ends.
Another emotional roller-coaster ride, there were many times I cried and laughed! Many times I could or couldn't figure out what would happen next! The characters and plot were amazing, as always, but also surprising! This series is still going strong for me and I can't wait to read what happens next!
Awesome as always. Magic, danger and more to keep you wondering what could possibly happen next. Tonio tries to save his childhood friend, will he succeed. Once you start reading, you’ll be drawn in to a different world for awhile. Loved it.
