The Paris Escape

Rate this book
In this sweepingly emotional story about what it takes to build the life you want, an heiress, her escort, and a young orphan must stick together during the tumultuous beginnings of World War II.

When Laura Powell and Henry Salter travel to Paris in 1938, neither considers the other very good company. Laura is a shallow, spoiled heir to a fortune, and Henry an opportunistic bore—or so they think. But as her father’s protégé, Henry is tasked with accompanying Laura for her safety, even as she continues to scorn him.

Orphaned stowaway David forces the pair to see eye to eye. They can ignore their growing feelings, but they can’t deny the boy’s need for protection. Yet even with this tentative truce, their problems are far from over.

The threat of war continues to grow until the Nazis occupy Paris. But Laura and Henry have opportunities they’re not willing to lose, and a home with David means more than safety outside France.

Before danger overtakes them, they’ll have to decide if the life they’re building can withstand what’s coming…and whether they have the strength to fight for it.

Do not try to read this book if you have other things to do! It is very difficult to put this book down.

Two Americans, Laura, an entitled heiress and Henry, an employee of Laura's father, embark on a pre-war tour of Europe. On the ship carrying them to France they encounter David a precocious ten year old Jewish stowaway.

When the three meet again in Paris David is in trouble until Laura and Henry come to his rescue. It takes no time for David to fully win the hearts of Laura and David. The three develop a little family full of love.

As the war quickly approaches Paris the three find themselves in danger from the Gestapo. All three have done things, are closely related to shady armament smuggling or are simply Jewish, which puts targets on their backs.

The three, along with their Jewish housekeeper and David's tutor, must flee Paris before time runs out.

Thank you to James Tucker, Lake Union Publishing and Goodreads for this copy of The Paris Escape.

There is nothing like historical fiction done well, and this is one of those stories. Our heroine is a bit of a spoiled rich girl to begin with, accompanied by a male chaperone who is also an employee in her father's armaments company, on a three month excursion to Paris. Once she returns, it is agreed that she will find a suitable husband and there is to be no "hanky panky" between her and her chaperone. That last part is pretty easy to agree to as neither really care for the other. However, they didn't count on running into a dusty little stowaway boy on the ship they are one for the trip to Paris, who worms his way into their hearts. This all takes place during a very dangerous time in history when Paris comes under siege of the Germans and it is the story of how they become a family and defy the odds stacked against them. I very much enjoyed this.

I love historical fiction, so it’s no surprise that I enjoyed this one.
Although Hitler is featured in this, there is another side that shows tenderness, caring, and maybe even love in one of the most difficult periods in time.

Laura is from a wealthy family, but she has some ideas that she wants to try, and no fears that a war is coming.

Henry works for her father, and does not have a lot of money,or fame. But, he is enlisted to protect Laura.

They do not care for each other…at all.

As they are traveling, they meet up with David. He’s a young, smart Jewish boy who’s traveling on the train with them. His parents were both killed by Hitler’s men, and unfortunately, he’s witnessed things that no young boy should ever have to.

The two grow close to David and vow to protect him…and then, everything changes…

This is a beautiful yet heartbreaking story of friendship, love and camaraderie during wartime in France.

Thanks so much to #NetGalley and #BrilliancePublishing, #BrillianceAudio for an ARC of the audiobook which is due to be released in about a week…on 10/29/24!

James Tucker’s "The Paris Escape" offers romance, intrigue, and adventure. From the moment you open the book, you’re transported to pre World War 2 with Henry, Laura and David who are traveling from the US to Paris aboard a ship.
The plot is a rollercoaster containing suspenseful twists and well-timed reveals. Tucker’s storytelling shines as he skillfully intertwines romance and suspense, creating a gripping story that is both heartfelt and exhilarating. The chemistry between Laura and Henry is palpable from the very beginning although they aren’t fans of each other at first. They meet David, a stow away orphan who adopts Laura and Henry as his family.
The characters are wonderfully developed, each with their own complexities and charm. You find yourself emotionally invested in their fates, rooting for their successes and feeling their struggles as if they were your own. Without giving too much away, I found my own heart racing towards the middle of the book and on while rooting for the main characters.
In summary, "The Paris Escape" is for anyone who loves a captivating story set against the backdrop of one of the world’s most romantic cities. As someone who is just starting to explore historical fiction, I highly recommend it! I did not want this book to end.

Excellent read

When I first started this book, my initial impression was "meh". Writing was too simple and the characters bonded too quickly to be believed. But after about 2 chapters I was hooked and felt the character development was good and the writing was simple but strong. The story was excellent and a bit nerve-wracking. An excellent novel!

Loved!! This is an easy KU win which is always exciting. Definitely the most romantic historical fiction (and more focused on fiction than history) that I’ve read, but I enjoyed every moment of it. Laura and Henry made such a dynamic pair, and the way David changed their (especially Laura) hearts was precious. A happy ending placed in such a volatile landscape is sometimes good for my historical fiction heart. Absolutely recommend!

Good historical fiction. I think it’s difficult to write a compelling WWII story that hasn’t already been told. This was a good plot with good characters, although I wish some had been fleshed out a bit more. 3.5 stars bumped to 4 because of the excellent narration.

I've never read a historical fiction before but so far I like what I read. I'm really like in the relationship between henry and Laura I have a feeling on this 3 month Journey that they're taking Across europe is gonna end differently than they will. I am glad that henry and laura Came across david Little boy On the ship and told him where they were Staying In paris.
I don't Have a good feeling about madame fournier She is a nazi supporter only because what the jews did to her family. Laura wasn't expecting to look after a boy because she was going to enjoy herself on the 3 months but something inside her
made her want to do right.
Henry got himself in a tough spot because he agreed to kind of spy for the paris government.
And poor david he's only ten years old lost his family in berlin because of a nazi. He just wants a family so bad.
I think since david came into laura and henry's life they both see a different side of each other that is softer and kinder. Lauren Henry are in a tough spot. They need to figure out what to do with david but I feel they are growing attached to him as is david. And laura's feelings are changing for henry. They finally kissed on the lips. That's and I feel there's no going back for them. They want each other but her parents forbid anything happening.
I can't believe how much hatred madame fournier has for jews that see would set a trap on a little kids,so they Send him back to germany to be taught a lesson as she said.
Now henry's over in nice Spying for the la gazzette.( The author does a great job of describing places in scenes that I can really picture them). Henry been out there for hours and finally he's seen some fishermen unloading some guns That are manufactured by germans. Henry thinks that they saw him as a dock and laura filled him in what happened with david. So they are looking to rent a house for privacy while they figure out what to do.
This is laura's first night performing in the night club in paris. She had a great performance And david and henry showed up to see her sing on opening night.
Henry's on his second mission to metz To meet up with a teenage german girl that is going to turn on her family, She does not want her family hurt but she wants to give the information on where they're keeping the gun crates. Henry Saw the guns in the crate And pulled one out as he did that.He heard somebody coming to the barn and it was a young guy. He hit him over her head with a gun to get away.( He's getting himself in over his head on spying)
Laura has an admirer at the club where she sings and he is a German. That doesn't take no for an answer. I'm not sure exactly who he is, if he is A spy for henry, her or david.

Now that laura and henry have spent time together that their parents forbided them to do, How will she hide the secret?
From her mother who will inturn tell her dad and their lives will be turned upside down...

So laura father has demanded her and henery return to America because it's not safe in europe and henry knows that too. But they have fallen in love with each other. And she has to return to marry someone else that she doesn't know.

Henry has so much to worry about waiting for the Passport for david, And now the editor he was working for spying,Levy is dead. Now he knows that he's not safe in paris no more, Constantly being watched. He was attacked by 2 men seems to be german. He was hurt pretty badly, and didn't want to go to the hospital out of fear.
So all we can do is wait. Laura has hired help And now it's on her way back to america or so I thought.
Henery just learned that his boss might be selling to the german but not directly.

A lot has changed in the 21 months they've been in Paris. It's more dangerous and so is david's life. War is breaking out all over europe And many jew have been sent to concentration, and it getting closer to Paris. Their little family stuck where they're at only because David's passport has been put on the back burner for now. And henry is forced to still spy because he's been fired from his position. Laura family does not talk to her No more since she decided to stay in paris and called her nasty names.
Henry has also confirmed that laura's father is indeed selling guns to the germans.
The approaching war has them worried because there's three jewish people in their household and two americans will be seen as enemies. With Henry still writing articles it has put a target on their back and are being watched even more.
They have to be careful when they leave the house.now the germans have invaded paris and in the city. the house it's getting ready to flee the city with the help of the lady who rent them the house.
Laura is getting ready to go sing at the nightclub, What's the worst I could happen. David didn't like the idea being left at home with the kislings, He never made it to the club. The morning time when Henry and Laura went to talk to the police the German soldiers are in charge now and they didn't believe them. They wanted their information, but they give them false. They don't trust them.
Laura and Henry do not know where david's at But he's anna cell. And they tried to torture him about information About henry and his Spying. David doesn't know where exactly he was brought to but it's some kind of camp. He has gotten beaten up, Because he ended up taking two dinners When others didn't get anything.
I'm not sure how Laura deal with the German soldier Will turn out,or if he's the one that ordered the taking of David. if she will have to sleep with him.
At the camp they are having the men and children line up in a way to see who's fit and not fit to keep. Them awful boys punch David to make him seem unfit But it didn't work. They took all the sick and unfit out of the courtyard to their doom (very sad). David number was called and he was scared that he was gonna be taken somewhere else, but he is allowed to leave.
But they told him he won't be so lucky next time. David was brought home, but what cost? I know they must escape tonight. But what about the deal laura made with the german high soldier. Laura's on her way to invite Frederick to her house for the alone time. But that's not what's gonna happen.
Frederick came with two guards and the housekeeper was able to give two drinks with the cyanide in it. Laura in a tough situation right now to where he's touching her in and got her on the bed. Just as he was about crotch level Frederick started to cough and then turn blue, So the Cyanide started to work. So now is the time for laura and her housekeeper to leave out the balcony and meet up with the rest of the family. They took two different cars out of the city and they promised to meet up at the safe spot. The car had reached a barricade but they were satisfied and they were able to go through.
Laura, david and henry all made it to the safe spot but the kislings were just a little later. Laura realized she would have not changed anything about the decision to stay in paris.she made the right choice even though it was dangerous. She has joy and she has a family And got to live the life that she wanted.
Really enjoyed reading the book. The author really knows how to keep you hooked. Chapter's want too long so that made it for more fun.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Brilliance Audio for the free audiobook in exchange for my honest review. Caroline Hewitt does a fantastic job narrating this story! I highly recommend the audiobook!!!

Its 1938 and Laura Powell is an heiress who is on her way to Paris for 3 months with Henry Salter, her chaperone Henry is her father's best salesmen for his armaments company. Once Laura returns to Minneapolis, it is agreed that she will find a suitable husband and marry well. Henry is a chaperone only and not of the correct status for Laura, as her parents have informed her. On the ship to France, they encounter a dusty little stowaway boy who has sticky fingers and an impressive knowledge of jewelry, courtesy of his jewish father. The setting is the impending siege of Paris by Germany and WWII.

Listening to this story was similar to watching one of the fantastic Cary Grant movies. The story setting is perfectly matched to the time period, and the characters are very lovable. I enjoyed listening to the relationships develop between the characters. The pacing is also very good. Overall a very enjoyable read!

I have read MANY fiction books set during WWII. This one is by and far the most unique! We follow the heiress to an American arms dealer, her chaperone, and a Jewish orphan. The heiress is is on a ship bound for Paris, with the hope of experiencing singing in cafes and clubs in Europe before she has to return to the US to marry and "settle down." Her chaperone, an employee of her father's company is a man hoping to gain influence. They meet the orphan stowaway on ship and instantly form a connection with him.

I enjoyed this book immensely! The first half dragged on a bit, but the last flew by as the characters decided to extend their stay in Paris, then got caught up in the Nazi occupation. While I have read many accounts and fictional representations of what it was like to be a spy, a soldier, or a Jewish person during WWII, this was the first I have read about being an (sort of)average person living in France during the first stages of war and the occupation.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Laura Powell wanted to visit Paris, so her father finally said yes; but she had to take a chaperone to protect her. One of his men, Henry Salter was selected to go with her; but he was definitely not to fall for her. One of Laura's wishes was to sing at a Paris cabaret and she intended to try to do just that. In fact, she was singing in the ship's lounge right now and a owner of a Paris cabaret was listening.
When she finished, she left to find Henry on the deck. He was with a young boy, David. David lost his parents and sister in a fire set by the Nazis and he was now without a family. Thinking he could do better in America, he headed there. Now he was headed back to Europe as he found, "America didn't want him." He had stowed away on their ship and now had met Henry.
Henry and Laura both felt an instant connection to David and wanted to help him. However, there wasn't much they could do at the time. Later, when he followed them to their hotel, a second chance came to help him and they did.
Laura followed up on an offer of an audition to a cabaret

Paris Escape

Paris Escape is a gripping historical novel set during the era of World War II. The story revolves around Laura, a young woman from a wealthy family who dreams of a life outside the expectations placed upon her by her social standing. Henry, an unassuming man with no fame or fortune, works for Laura's father. Despite their differences, the two form a bond over their shared love and determination to protect a Jewish boy named David.

David’s parents were tragically killed by Hitler’s forces, and he became the heart of the novel, symbolizing both the innocence lost during the war and the hope that could emerge even in the darkest times. As the war intensifies, Laura and Henry’s commitment to safeguarding David grows, even when faced with life-threatening risks.

The author does an excellent job of capturing the emotional weight of the story, bringing to life the complex relationships between the characters and the historical backdrop of Nazi oppression.

Paris Escape is a captivating historical fiction novel set against the backdrop of pre-war Paris. Laura and Henry, sent to the city for different reasons by her father, unexpectedly fall in love—not just with each other, but with the freedom Paris offers. In the vibrant streets of the French capital, they escape the constraints of their past lives in America, forging a new existence filled with love, belonging, and self-discovery.

However, their newfound happiness is shattered when Germany invades Paris, forcing them to make a heartbreaking choice: stay and risk everything or flee in hopes of preserving the life they built together. As war engulfs their beloved city, Paris Escape masterfully blends romance, danger, and resilience, making it a must-read for fans of WWII-era historical fiction set in Europe.

It is incredibly rare for me to not like a book, but this was my least favorite read out of the entire year. I have read so many different historical fiction books, especially ones set during WW2, but this one doesn't deserve to be categorized as a historical fiction. Yes, it was set during WW2. Yes, it featured a Jewish boy. But really, it was just an American couple playing house and playing at being a spy. Some of the stereotypes were just disgusting. One of the minor characters was depicted as overweight, but this was described repeatedly in detail as being disgusting. Another minor character spewed terrible things about Jews. I realize that this was the worldview of many people during this time, but it felt grotesquely uncalled for and incredibly insensitive. Every time that the main couple in the story said that they "were in love," I had to laugh. What they were in love with was each other's bodies. It was lust, not love. They went from hating each other to being in love ridiculously fast. If I had had literally any other audiobook to listen to while I did my daily tasks, I would have DNFed this book.

I am not usually a fan of historical fiction, but James Tucker's The Paris Escape has convinced me that I have been short-sighted. The book takes place in the U.S. and pre-war Paris as our two protagonists find themselves in transit to Paris via steamship. While on board, Henry and Laura meet David, a stowaway child, and the three instantly become family. The three arrive in the City of Light, and the reader hopes all will work out in these treacherous times. The story combines history, well-written fiction, and illustrative development of the characters, Paris, and the tumultuous times that they are experiencing. The Paris Escape is perfect for veterans and new fans of historical fiction.

What could possibly go wrong with a potentially exciting historical novel placed in pre-WWII Paris? While I had high hopes for this book, the narrator of the audio version left much to be desired. Aside from the weird “gruff” voice that she used for all the male characters, the voice she used for the 10-year old German boy (who was a central character) sounded more like that of an excitable, high-pitched Chinese girl. Finally, about a quarter of the way through the story, I began reading it on my Kindle. Unfortunately, while the premise of the book sounded like a winner, the main characters didn’t seem particularly likable or believable; which, of course, adversely impacted the overall story.

I enjoyed this book but was not as gripped as I thought I would be.

Laura and Henry are travelling together to Paris. Henry is Laura’s chaperone who works for Laura’s Father who sells arms to countries. Laura and Henry don’t think much of each other. Laura is being brought up that she will marry who her parents choose for her. David is a stowaway on the ship he has escaped Germany and seems to travel to a few countries.

I felt the book didn’t really quite flow as I expected it. There was not much depth to the book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5! I absolutely loved this book it is a World War 2 historical fiction that was written extremely well. It follows Laura who is presumed to be a spoiled rich girl and her chaperone Henry. I loved the connection between those two characters and i especially loved David. For this being an extremely heavy topic the story was beautiful and had a great ending. This book related the story of a woman, her escort and a kid that come together at the beginning of WWII. For me, it is a different story since I have mostly read books about people during the war.
However, it felt like a very long build up to the main events that unravel in the last quarter of the book. I would have enjoyed much more for it to take most of the book.

This was an "ok" book. It was a book that did not grab me. I could read it or not read it. I was not drawn to keep reading. It was an interesting story and a little bit different view of the beginning of the war than other books that I have read. Over all a 3 out of 5. For me a 5 needs to be an all time favorite that I tell everyone about.

Worth a read

Definitely a moving plot but the end frustrated me with how much of a positive spin it tried to project, especially for a couple in 1940 France. In that element, it seemed to lose a bit of historical integrity.

Good book

This is a good book portraying a flight like many people took to escape the Nazi's. I wish James would consider a 2nd book to see if it all turned out. You could tell this book and the French people were close to her heart.
