Weird things are happening again in Cape May and the ghosts of old mobsters never rest easy.

Erik Mitchell gets a strange delivery of antique poker chips with odd markings tied to a casino that burned a century ago. Ben Nolan finds a dead guy in one of his rental units—turns out the guy's been missing for twenty years and is linked to a long-lost treasure.

The ghostly energy of the old Commodore Wilson hotel juices up all the town's spirits, and a stranger shows up with an unhealthy interest in both cases. Ben and Erik have just moved in together, and they're still navigating the next step as partners and blending their lives.

Murder, missing persons, hidden treasure, and haunted poker chips. Can Ben and Erik put the pieces together to solve the case, or when the cards are dealt, will they be left holding the dead man's hand?

Last Resort is a suspenseful MM paranormal romance mystery-adventure filled with second chance love, hurt/comfort, true soulmates, old curses, hidden treasure, dangerous secrets, restless ghosts, psychic visions, powerful witches, angry mobsters, and a very haunted hotel.

It seems that I waited a long, long time for the third book in this series...but it was SO, SO worth it! Erik and Ben are now moving in together, trying to enjoy this new part of their relationship. They are committed to and really working hard on having a long, and beautiful future together.

The morning mail brings a surprise to Trinket...Erick's antique shop...a set of mysterious casino chips. With no idea who the sender was, he does recognize by the markings, that they were a part of the old Commadore Hotel Casino that has been the source of so much supernatural trouble throughout these three stories.

Then a man is found dead in one of Ben's rental units...they know that it was a murder and was more than likely linked to the mob who owned and ran the Commadore in its hay-day. Now Erik and Ben with the help of their friends, some from the other books in different series... are trying to discover the location of a hidden treasure before anyone else gets hurt or dies. Familiar supportive secondary characters and Ben and Erik, our main couple begin investigating the paranormal while sharing some steamy times together making this a fun return to Cape May.

I began reading Morgan Brice's books some years ago with the first book in the Witchbane series and later continued to her Badlands series. Her books were actually my introduction to the M/M Romance genera. It seems that it is simply impossible for her to write anything that isn't intriguing, entertaining and top of the line, making no difference if it's M/M Romances, Mysteries, or Supernatural. She has an amazing talent for creating wonderful, warm, sweet, and sizzling hot characters that you will want to visit again and again. I hope we; her fans, can look forward to many more offerings in all three of these wonderful series.

For some reason I had a hard time getting into this one. The story felt disconnected and kind of forced together, and while the relationship progressed the biggest milestone was at the beginning so it didn't feel as big by the end.
I just wasn't into it.

One thing I know I can count on with this author’s series—each book is better than the last, and that holds true here with Last Resort. There’s the continuing evolution of Ben and Erik’s relationship, mystery, suspense, and it’s all wrapped up in a paranormal bow just the way I like it.

The mob connections just keep on turning up, and the past just cannot be put to rest. With murder on their doorstep and the Commodore Wilson hotel again playing a part, Ben and Erik once again get tied up in sorting things out while trying to keep each other safe.

I always enjoy returning to an ongoing series from this author, and the connections to their other series are always a plus for me (don’t worry, you don’t have to have read any of the other series to enjoy this one, though I do recommend those as well). The story here is solid and the suspense and mystery aspects make for intriguing reading that holds your attention.

This story was a 4.5-star read for me, and I hope to see more in this series, with hopefully some additional attention to certain supporting characters like Ben’s cousin Sean. Note that while you could read this on its own, I’d highly recommend reading this series in order so you get the background between Ben and Erik, as well as the full details regarding the Commodore Wilson hotel and the mob aspects/history.

The romance continues of Ben and Erik’s relationship growing to another level. This is recommended to be read in order to understand the storyline so far even with a small back story included in this one.
Ben and Erik moved in together with their one of their business below them. Erik owned the antique shop while Ben worked in real estate.
Receiving a package in the mail produces another mystery but that's only the tip of the iceberg for dangers.
Another great mystery and paranormals for both characters. I loved the chemistry between these guys as they unravelled a few more mysteries. A fantastic ending to the book in the series.

With this third installment, morgan brice shows us yet again how well she is at world building. She has tied in characters from other series that if you know them, it makes it even more fascinating of a read, and if you haven't yet met them, you're intrigued to give those series a shot.
Cape May used to be a sleepy town, but with the arrival of Erik & Ben, past mysteries come to light, leaving the town in an upheaval. The boys learn more to rely on the friends they've made along the way to solve the mystery and hope for some peace. Neither man's past like to stay in the past, which keeps you wanting more of this series to see if they ever find their peace.
Erik & Ben's relationship had blossomed beautifully with this book, proving that with time, past wounds can heal, and they can learn to trust again. They now live together, making new issues come to light and yet peace knowing someone is there to catch whenever you may stumble. Cannot wait to see what comes next from this series.

Another entertaining installment of mobsters and mystery, with a side order of ghosts and haunted items.
Ben and Erik are one of my favourite Morgan Brice pairings and they're well established here, as the book starts with them moving in together.
I like that they don't try to do everything alone, they're not afraid to involve their spooky friends and contacts.
It's great that they aren't at odds with the police and actively involve the Chief.
I like the mix of history, the Mob, and spooky woowoo.

I know whenever I read a book by this author I’m guaranteed an exciting read. This one did not disappoint. Exciting and dangerous with a realness to the characters and their emotions. I love the connections to other books too. It’s like checking in on an old friend. I highly recommend this and all the other books this author has written. I was given an arc, thank you GRR, and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I enjoyed this one quite a lot. The perfect mix of the paranormal and good murder mystery but mostly on the mystery side. Living in one of the most haunted small towns sure is interesting. Never a dull day. But at least Ben and Erik have each other, they live together now so they're onto the next step of their sweet relationship. They fit together so well, they support each other every step of the way.

Idk whether to continue with this series or not. The completionist is in me wants to finish it but at the same time I really can't be bothered to waste my time on this. I still like the characters but the consistent mob related plotline got old 2 books ago. The first time was OK, the 2nd time was like ok, recycled plotline and if the next book will also have a mob plot I'm out. I find mob stories way too boring especially since the characters keep getting blindsided the same way every single time.
Which is a shame because I love the small community they've established.
I also wish they would work together most of the time instead of separately.

While the story itself was fine, the sex is becoming annoying. It feels like the author uses the same dialogue every time, and you just sit there, skim through it, and roll your eyes. My big issue with this one, however, is a change up in the characters' abilities. In the first two books it was always said Ben and Eric could see ghosts but they couldn't communicate with them, but in this one, they're listening and talking to ghosts without any explanation as to the boost in their abilities.

Love the Treasure Trail series

Definitely a 5-star read from a one-click author. I enjoyed this book from start to finish. Erik and Ben are the perfect couple and now they have a dependable Scooby team of characters who help them solve the mystery. I love Morgan Brice’s writing and always look forward to her stories. I will keep an eye open for the next in this series no matter how long it takes.

I am not a big fan of urban fantasy, but I decided to give it a try when I requested the advanced reader copy on GRR. Although it is not my usual genre, the book managed to keep me engaged. The chemistry between Erik and Ben was well-executed, and the romance was just the right amount, not too excessive. However, the paranormal aspect was somewhat confusing, which could be because I had not read the two previous books in the series. Overall, it was an enjoyable read for those dull and cloudy Saturday afternoons."

Hidden Treasure, Moving in and Mobsters

LAST RESORT
TREASURE TRAIL - BOOK 3
MORGAN BRICE
Darkwind Press (Dreamspinner Imprint)

Erik owns Trinkets, the antique shop on the first floor of the old Victorian house, with his apartment on the second floor.
Well, their apartment - Ben, his boyfriend, managed Nolan Resort Real Estate for his aunt and uncle. He had moved in with Erik a few months ago, but had forgotten a few boxes stored at Trinkets.
Ben had stepped away from being a Newark cop after a near-fatal shooting, just as Erik had stepped away from stopping art fraud and nearly getting killed.
Both betrayed, both burnt from their experiences, Cape May was a new start for them.
Ben is unpacking his pop culture and comic con collection, conscious of the fact Erik collects classical art prints and artifacts.
But as Erik reminds him, opposites attract and their place can be a reflection of both of them.
Like other characters across the Brice universe, Erik is a psychometrist and can sense heavy emotions or ghosts connected to objects. The boys are used to dealing with artifacts touched by unfinished Mob business, ghosts and psychics. The Commodore Wilson hotel was renowned for the trouble cursing it's history and a ghost of the hotel could still be seen on the land where it existed; it's a genius loci.
When he receives a mysterious package containing clay poker chips from the Fun Factory Casino, they are loaded - pardon the pun - with heavy atmosphere and intention.
Like most of Brice's books, we get cameos or mentions of other characters in her various universes. For instance, Ben, ex-cop, has contact with Vic D’Amato, supernatural police officer from Myrtle Beach - recently married to psychic Simon. That's actually one of my favourite of her series.
There's a lot of interesting side stuff within this story, from the history both men have with the Mob plus the PTSD Erik in particular suffers from, which is explored well. Then there's Monty the Lighthouse 'keeper' and his 'boyfriend' Jon who have a unique relationship, and the 'convent', and Sister Frankie, who help ghosts deal with unfinished business and move on to the afterlife, while the living residents fight the supernatural troublemakers.
Some of the other enjoyable characters are Susan, Erik's help at Trinkets, mother to the chief of police and their neighbour, plus Ben's laconic cousin, food truck owner Sean, who is visiting, as well as Cole, the actual chief of police.
There's a dead mobster, hidden treasure, ghosts, action, danger and romance.
As always, Brice delivers a fun, intriguing book with a wonderful dose of romance and leading pair chemistry.
It's a treasure in and of itself.

When a body is found in one of Ben’s rentals, associations with the MOB are quickly established. And where there’s one relation, it leaves six degrees of separation or less before a connection to Ben or Erik. Add to that some artifacts on Eriks' desk that link a little-known amusement park to the infamous Commodore Wilson, and life for the intrepid duo becomes more adventurous than they wanted. But for the mystery to disappear, it must be solved.
Last Resort is the third book in the Treasure Trail series. It has a slightly more relaxed pace than its predecessor but is no less intense. The more leisurely pace leaned towards the investigation and relationship with periods of solid drama. Like the previous book, I settled in with my cup of tea for a good read, forgetting housework until the last page was completed.
The story is told in the third person from the viewpoints of Erik and Ben, with elements in the first person written in italics. Local resources are used more in this installment, which was a true highlight. Chief Hendricks of the local PD is definitely a character I’d like to see more of (in every sense of the word). It would be fantastic to see him paired with Sean in the future (pleeeaaasseee). Also, it was good to see Monty, Alessa, and paranormal covens in the district get extra page space. Crossover cameos by characters from other books written by Morgan Brice were minimal.
Erik worries that his past relationship hangups will compromise things with Ben. Ben has similar concerns. A good portion of the story follows their journey from dented past experiences, and inner demons, moving in together through their hopes and fears towards a fulfilling and right relationship for them. It is an understandable journey with one or the other occasionally overthinking things -as many people do daily.
Regarding the investigation, neither man believes in coincidences. So, with a body and artifacts throwing off some strong juju in the mix – something nefarious is afoot. Investigations of the mortal and supernatural kind are required. However, nothing is ever simple, and those with a vested interest make their feelings known, creating more crime scenes. I greatly enjoyed the mix of paranormal witness’ vs mortal sleuthing – it provided some insight into how life has changed with other elements staying the same.
Last Resort provided a well-balanced story between plot, personal, and investigation with some exciting times, and cool characters that were alive and dead. Nicely done.

Last Resort is the third outing in Cape May, the east coast setting for the Treasure Trail series. We're back with Erik, current owner of Trinkets curio shop (and front for handling haunted objects) and Ben the manager of rental properties in the town who also happens to be an ex-cop PI. What's become clear over the course of these books is that these two guys are absolutely right for each other…and that they're trouble magnets! This time, Erik is sent some vintage casino chips with a mystery attached.

As we've come to expect from this author, the investigation is a lovely cocktail of romantic relationship development, a growing circle of friends, police/investigation procedural and an interesting paranormal mystery. Yes, the history of Cape May, as much a side character as any of those Ben and Erik interact with, once again presents the guys with another opportunity to snoop into the circumstances of a murder and flex their ghostly puzzle solving muscles with the help of their buddies.

So, whilst Last Resort isn't my favourite in the series, the plot that continues the theme of mobster connections in Cape May, as well as the metaphysical elements, is still engaging to me. I think it's a solid 4* and I hope there'll be another spooky action adventure for Erik and Ben soon.

A copy was provided by the author. This is my honest opinion.

In September of 2022 I discovered Morgan Brice. I had only been reading MM romance for a few months but always enjoyed paranormal mysteries. I now have read almost every book in the PNR aspect of this wider world created by the author and relisten to the available audiobooks often.

"Last Resort" is the newest addition to the Treasure Trail series set in Cape May, New Jersey. Some things keep reappearing as issues in the lives of Ben and Erik, but this time those things take a bit of a twist and a different turn. It is a lot of fun, full of excitement and danger, but also full of how two adult men bring their baggage into a relationship and build a life together. It's great seeing how they have insecurities but the talk and work things out.

One thing that I love about these books is also something I have started to dislike a bit. There are a lot of books and series that are connected in this world under 2 author names. It means that there is often a lot of cross over or quick mentions of other characters or events in other books/series. It can be a lot of fun recognizing character, event or place names. It's starting to get to be a bit too much though. It feels like adding too many characters into an already large cast of characters. That being said, some of the added characters do have purpose and are nice to have in the mix.

A gripping and suspenseful story!

It's been a couple of years since I read Blink, the previous novel in the Treasure Trail series, so I can say without a doubt that you won't be lost if you choose to read Last Resort without having read any of the other books in this series. Now having said that, all of the other books are great but book one, Treasure Trail, will give you the background on how Erik and Ben get together so reading it might make Last Resort more satisfying. I've said it before, one of the things I really like about Morgan Brice's books is how she writes them so that you can read them as standalone stories.

Ben has just moved in with Erik and they are settling into new routines that cohabitating requires. I enjoyed the romance aspects of this book but what was really captivating was the gripping mystery and suspense. There are good ghosts and bad ghosts, good witches and bad witches, and lots of woo-woo stuff. I also enjoyed the secondary characters of Susan and her son, Police Chief Hendricks. This story held my attention from start to finish and I'm looking forward to reading more adventures with Erik and Ben.

A copy of this book was provided to me at my request and my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

The sinister atmosphere, the strong emotions, the interesting descriptions, and the characters’ intriguing skills kept me reading eagerly. Liked the secondary characters who added much suspense to the plot. Erik Mitchel and Ben Nolan have taken another step in their relationship despite the doubts that were haunting them, but with a past like theirs, peace and tranquility seemed not to be seen in their future. It is said that you must go after the good things and that bad things travel by themselves, and Erik and Ben found how truth that was when they found at their door, a complicated and dangerous mystery that kept them worried about each other, expecting something awful to happen, from resource to resource. and looking over his shoulders to see what was lurking. I like how the author makes everything fit while little by little she unravels the tangle of paranormal situations. Suspense, mystery, strong emotions, camaraderie, ghosts, magic, artifacts, treasure hunt, gangsters, violence, romance, and passion. I voluntarily reviewed this copy I received from Hidden Gems and enjoyed it.

I wish this wasn’t the end to Erik and Ben’s story arc. I know there is a short story that takes place after the events of the three books but living in a Haunted Cape May and owning a mystical antique shop should allow for endless source of stories. Not to mention the mob/mafia connection. I can appreciate how that connection can get old and strung out after three books but at the same time I enjoyed the MC’s dynamic.

This book shouldn’t really be classified as a romance book because honestly this plot line could have been almost identical without the short 🌶️ scenes in the book. Yes there is multiple kissing scenes but nothing overly romantic. That being said it felt like the romance matured with the MC’s multiple reference to “old married couples” felt very in line with the amount of 🌶️, not to throw shade at older couples.

The plot was standard for this series, building to a mob altercation. I appreciated that this plot’s climax had actual paranormal involvement through the build up not just as an added “assist” in the climactic resolution.

Again, sad the series is over but throughly enjoyed it.

Eric and Ben are back to sort out a mystery with a mob connection.

I really love this couple and their relationship grows stronger with each book. It's great to see their worries and concerns about moving together. As this series is about an established couple, similar to Simon and Vic in the Badlands series, the focus is on their love and connection and growing life together.

The book starts with a bang but I found the first half a lot slower then what I normally know from this author. There is a lot of research and wondering and talking, filled with domestic scenes. But around the 55% mark, it really picks up and the bullets fly again.

The magic is interesting, I like that there is always something a bit new to the story.

As usual, there are links to other series but there is no need to read them, the story functions very well.

Old friends and secondary characters appear, like Eric's shop assistant Susan and the lighthouse keeper Monty.

I hope there will be more books coming.

Supernatural crime solving boyfriends with a bit of spice thrown in?

Sign me up!

Erik and Ben are chasing the quiet life after a couple of close calls in their previous lives, and I assume the previous books in this series, when a set of old poker chips turn up on their doorstep.

These poker chips, combined with the haunted site of an old hotel, a dead body, and the hunt for long missing treasure set us off on a good old mystery.

I enjoyed the majority of this story, the characters are solid (in more ways than one 😏), and the pacing is satisfying enough. To me it could have been a bit faster paced but then it would have been over sooner. One thing I enjoy about supernatural books is when they seamlessly entwine the supernatural and non supernatural worlds, how they blend into one without being two separate worlds.

Now, I was expecting, or hoping, that this would be a bit spicier, with a bit more detail thrown in, but you can’t get everything you wish for in a novel 😅

Thanks to @gaybookpromotions for the chance to give this one a read!

I love this author’s paranormal stories and how they’re all part of one big world, so characters cameo in each other’s stories. This series is a wonderful mix of romance, mystery, and the paranormal.

I like how Ben and Erik’s relationship is growing as they get to know each other while risking their lives with ghosts etc. Their romance is sweet and protective, and I like how they don’t move in together immediately, and when they do, they find a way to make their differences fit in a shared home.

The supporting cast is great. I love Susan, Jaxon, and Sean in particular. I also like how Ben and Erik’s pasts come back to haunt them. Literally. And how the mob always has them looking over their shoulders. I also enjoyed the addition of the convent, and the tie ins with the Deadly Curiosities series.

I like how the mystery unfolds, and that the information doesn’t just fall into their laps. I always appreciate research being done at libraries! Love the final showdown – lots of action and everyone working together.

I very much enjoyed the earlier books in the series and was looking forward to the continuing adventures of Erik and Ben. I was not disappointed. In the latest installment, they are back for another adventure with the mob along with a supernatural twist. Just when they are finalizing their living arrangements and co-mingling their belongings Erik receives a strange package at the store containing poker chips. Believing there is a reason they were sent to him; Erik starts to unravel the mystery of the resort whose name is on the chips. Ben is then met with a shock when the renter in one of his properties is found shot to death. Could they be related? Neither Erik or Ben believes in coincidence. Indeed, the two events are related and Erik and Ben set out to solve the mystery with help from a few friends both human and ghostly! Erik Mitchell and Ben Nolan are settling into life as a couple living together. The Erik receives a strange package of poker chips from a long-gone casino, while Ben finds a dead man in one of his rentals. This dead guy has been missing for twenty years and is linked to a long-lost treasure. The old hotel Commodore Wilson comes back to haunt them. And an individual arrives in town with a determined interest in all these connections. Trying to settle into a shared home does not begin to compare with trying to determine what is going on.

There is nothing better than a Morgan Brice story. Last Resort captured you with the first word and keeps you until the last. There is excitement, danger, a mystery, help from friends, and lots of heat (perhaps sexcitement). It is good to see Erik and Ben again and experience their determination to solve this mystery. Kudos to Morgan Brice for another excellent tale for our reading pleasure.

First there is the antique set of poker chips that happen to be hunted. These chips show up out of nowhere in Erik's shop. Then the murder of a guest staying in Ben's family rentals. Is it a coincidence that this guy had ties to the mob and these chips made an appearance? Ben and Erik use their paranormal abilities to try to resolve the mystery of both the appearance of the antique and the murder of the guest. There are complications that get in the way but this is not unexpected as the Commodore Wilson Hotel is bringing its own ghostly essence to bear. In the midst of this craziness we get to see this couple continuing to develop and deepen their relationship. Now living together they are still new and dealing with the growing pains of creating a common home and continuing to learn how to be them. This is such a good series not just for the paranormal aspects but it is fun following along as this relationship develops.

Third in series (Treasure Trail), best if read in order. Paranormal suspense. Established couple. Hurt/comfort. Dual POV. Erik and Ben are moving in together, trying to enjoy their new-ish relationship, and are really committed to having a long future together. But a set of mysterious casino chips and a murder in town linked to the mob have Erik and Ben trying to discover a hidden treasure before more people get hurt. The story was a bot scattered but still enjoyable. Familiar supportive secondary characters and our main couple investigating the paranormal while sharing some steamy times together made this a fun return to Cape May. My favorite parts are when Ben and Erik are on page together, they are mature equals and have difficult pasts that they accept, each of them supportive and caring for one another. This is an entertaining series. 4.5 rounded up

So in this third installment, we have a lot going on. Erik has received a package that contains some vintage poker chips that he knows he has not purchased from any estate sales. There is energy coming off of them, but he doesn't know for sure if it's good or evil. Ben ends up finding a dead man in one of the rental units. And on top of that, the veil is thinning and the hotel is on the verge of re-emerging and our boys are also finding their way in living together. Ben still has the insecurity that he believes that one day Erik is going to wake up & realize that Ben doesn't fit in his world and will not want to stay with him. This was a good mystery trying to figure who what/who is responsible for the chips & who killed the man found in the rental. Even though there are insecurities that pop up, you can see the love our MC's have for each other. I love their friends & Ben's cousin & enjoy watching them work together to solve the mystery. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

I received a copy of this book from the author, and this is my honest review.

Ben and Eric are hoping to settle into living together. Trying to mesh their lives with their pasts gets increasingly difficult because of ghosts, murder, magic, and mob treasure. It’s all in a normal day. They just wish it wasn’t so normal.

The things I liked about the book…their relationship, a combination of caring, heat, total acceptance of each others oddities, and the willingness to accept the crazy into their lives. Also the matter of fact manner in which they accept that there are all different types of beings. Their willingness to tap the powers and knowledge their acquaintances have to reach their end goals of solving a mystery and staying alive.

So many characters. From this book and other people from books across this universe. Confusing at times to place them all.

The author created a story that was enjoyable to read.

I received an arc of this book.

The guys are moving in together! I’ve followed the series since the beginning and watched as their relationship developed. Waiting for the new updates. Ben moving into Erik’s place. The pair co-mingling their stuff. It’s nice to see them settle into Cape May. Each still have doubts and wonder how their cohabiting will work out.

Ben is a former police officer and Erik worked investigating art fraud. Each betrayed and burnt out in their former jobs. He has a few concerns about their moving in together. How the physical pieces of their lives will fit in. He’s been reluctant to unpack figures, games, and books of his pop culture likes.

Add in a murder, missing person, and haunted chips for a spot of fun. The books do build on each other and events from the past play a part with their investigation this round.

I shouldn't really need to say anymore than its a book by Morgan Brice 5*! However for those new to their work as always you get a well written story with great characters and page turning plots. With this book though please read the previous in the series as we are continuing Ben and Erik's journey. Loved seeing other characters from different series pop into this story and was great to see them again! When Ben & Erik arrive in Cape May so many past mysteries come to light which leaves the town in an upheaval. "With a little help from their friends" they aim to solve these and continue with their relationship growth which has now progressed them to living together and all the changes this involves.
