Succinct and well-written. I appreciated the stories of the saints throughout. I think the author could have added a little more “how to,” but it is a very short book and I don’t think the “how to” was his point in writing it, more focusing on doing and surrendering to God’s will in every moment.
Short and convicting. The information on sloth was gold. The man who is burdened with business is actually slothful with things concerning God. The definitions of “white martyrdom” versus “red martyrdom” were helpful as well. I first heard the terms thrown around on Catholic Youtube, but having an on-paper definition is clarifying.
One thing that immediately resonated with me was this passage: “We must all learn to communicate like adults. Stop the bustling through text messaging.” He continues, “[t]o pepper other people’s lives with needless emojis and dings and little emotional bursts through your fingertips tells the world that you have found a little better to do with your time and that you do not mind interrupting others from more important matters in their own lives.”
As a result, I text a lot less now. I try to focus on only what’s important.
This book was extremely short (sub 50 pages) but worth reading again.
There’s a recommended reading section at the end of the book (“Devout Life” “Imitation of Christ”, etc.) and this book definitely is a gateway drug to those classics.
The Holy Spirit had been tugging on my heart for several weeks to get this book and I am so glad I did. In this book, the author succinctly and convincingly explains why "busyness" is an illusion, and how detrimental it can be in the spiritual life. The author gives us an alternative that is so liberating and filled with peace: you are never too busy to do the Will of God and become a Saint.
A good, quick read for anyone who struggles with the sin or sloth in our modern era where filling your time with the useless things of this world is viewed as a badge of honor.
