Preface: It is now three hundred and eighty-seven years since Columbus first stepped on the shores of the New World. He was the pioneer of a long line of Catholic Heroes and Heroines, some of whom I have attempted to sketch in the present volume. It would, indeed, be easy to add to my list. But the names I give are representative. I have aimed to be just in selecting. I have chielfly sought those whose lives exhibit great virtue, heroism, and lofty achievements.
