Sometimes the perfect chili… Can be way too hot. House flipper and amateur sleuth, Flora Abner, is excited to finally get started on her new flip house. The drywall is going in, and she still has plenty of time to take a shift or two at the hardware store. She’s even looking forward to entering a batch of chili into the chili contest at the county fair.
Proud of her slowly simmered and slightly spicy entry, Flora thinks that her odds of an award are pretty good…until the chili tasters are rushed to the hospital. What looks like mischief is investigated as murder when one contestant passes.
Horrified, Flora goes to inspect the batches of chili and quickly discovers that the one with her name on it, isn’t the one that she brought. Someone had murder on their mind and tried to frame Flora for the crime.
Determined to get to the truth and salvage her reputation, Flora turns up the heat and will stop at nothing to prove her innocence. Can she do it before they throw the book…or cookbook at her? Find out in this tasty Cozy Mystery!
When Cozy Mystery author, Patti Benning, isn’t busy plotting the deaths of multiple fictitious characters, she loves to spend time hiking with her rescue dog, Max, who is her bestest writing buddy.
Patti loves to cook and the food in her books has been tried and tested in her very own kitchen. She’s technologically shy, and stays away from social media a great deal, because it makes her feel more awkward and introverted than meeting someone face to face.
Writing is the perfect job for her because in her books, she gets to explore all the topics she loves, food, animals, crafts and reading. She loves her readers dearly, and is thankful for the opportunity to share with them through her work.
This was the next in the Real Estate Rescue cozy mystery series. There’s a chili making contest that Violet wants to enter. She has Flora help her come up with an entry that could win. But they aren’t just sampling chili at the fair, the judges get sick and one dies from one of the chili samples. Who did it and why? Was it Violet and Flora’s entry? What was the motive? Can Flora help solve who did it? It’s always fun to escape for a short period and read about Flora and her new life in a small town. Great quick cozy mystery!
“Chillin' Out” is a by-the-numbers novella in the 'Real Estate Cosy Mysteries' series. I think it is aimed at people who don't read much and are terrified of anything over 100 pages long. Violet gets Flora to help her in an upcoming Chilli-making contest. All goes well until the judging - one of them drops dead after tasting their entry. Did they make a deadly chilli by accident, or did someone add a deadly substance to it? The solution comes quickly and totally by accident. It's readable but a waste of time. 1.5 Stars, raised to 2 Stars.
I was pretty sure I knew whodunit, but all the reasoning behind it was what made it fun following Flora and Violet in their sleuthing, sometimes together and sometimes it was just Flora. At least the showdown wasn’t too dangerous and was controllable. Violet and Flora are just lucky they’re so honest and weren’t swayed over to the dark side at one point. Can’t wait to see what these friends get into next—I read there’s a book 15 coming next for sure yay!
Flora is hard at work on her next house. This house had to be gutted as it was in bad shape and would need much more work than her first house. Despite all the work she needed to put in she made time to enter the town chili contest with Violet. When disaster strikes the contest she dives in to help solve the mystery. A fun read.
Flora & Violet decide to enter the local chili cook off. Before the winner could be decided all the judges become ill with a deadly outcome for one of them. The girls are initially blamed for it. Can they figure out the truth and clear their names before it’s too late? Pick up a copy and find out. I highly recommend.
Flora has started renovation on her new house and even has time to enter a chili contest. Bit when a contestant end up dead she’ll have to use her sleuthing skills to find a killer as well. This is one killer chili that you don’t want to miss.
A few interesting twists in this one. Just when you thought the killer had been revealed….surprise it was actually someone else entirely. What a fun read.
I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book provided by the publisher.
