Luke Pearson is a British illustrator, cartoonist, and comic book writer best known for the Hilda series of comics for Nobrow Press, and Hilda, the Netflix series based on the comics. He has also storyboarded episodes of the Cartoon Network series Adventure Time, during its fifth and seventh seasons.

It was jarring to have Twig take center stage in this book with thought balloons and full-on conversations with other animals. Once I got used to that, it was a nice adventure about friendship and bravery as HIlda and Twig take shelter from the rain in a burial mound that is harboring some forest animals and one very large surprise.

This story appears to be set sometime before or between the early volumes, when Hilda and her mother still lived in the country.

This felt quite different than the first few volumes. Maybe a bit more kid friendly? Twig is the star of the show, which I didn't mind at all. Some really fun action scenes. Big splash pages throughout.

Was surprised to see Twig take the spotlight with his own thought bubbles and character growth, but it made for one of the more unique volumes, even if it lacks some of the depth the show and later volumes like Stone Forest and Mountain Giant
The show may have ended, so I'm glad I can look forward to new volumes, should Pearson choose to make them. An easy, cosy recommendation even if you don't read graphic novels much

Die bisherigen Hilda Graphic Novels waren famos. Kraftvoll und dunkel. Vollgepackt mit originären Ideen, wilde Kreaturen, die man alle liebte und der freigeistigen Protagonistin. Aber auch das Beschreiben der allein erziehenden Mutter, das Aufeinandertreffen unser allbekannten Welt und der nicht so allbekannten Welt Hildas. Ein Träumchen.

Hier ist alles in Spuren noch da. Es wird auch Mal wer gefressen :) Aber es wurde weich gewaschen. 6 Panels pro Seite quasi. Hin und wieder ein Ganzseiter. Es ist nun einzückender Kindercomic mitTwig (Hörnchen) als Hauptfigur.

Ein liebes Buch, definitiv. Und auch eine Kinderbuchempfehlung.

Ich persönlich vermisste das Düstere.

It is time for a rainy day adventure with Twig and Hilda!


A big big thank you to my hubby for gifting me this one for my birthday in February! This was one of my most OMG need to get books from 2024 and I am so glad I got it in 2025.

In this wonderful adventure, which takes place before all the adventures that Hilda has in Trollberg as she is back in her little red house, Hilda and Twig are going out and have a wonderful day, but what happens when the rain starts to pour? You hide in a strange hill of course which may or may not be as safe as you think (I mean, as someone who has read multiple Hilda books along with stuff about folklore just knew that this hill with an opening wasn’t just any old hill).

I absolutely loved this story and I loved that Twig was mostly the protagonist over Hilda. Hilda also gets some scenes, but most of the time we see Twig’s thoughts and see him go on a wild adventure in which he makes a new friend (unsure if I would call that a friend, but I guess in some ways it is, just a friend you don’t want to be when she is hungry, haha). Twig is such a sweetie and I am so happy we could follow him in this adventure. But even before that, I had such a giggle at how he reacted to Hilda’s suggestions of where to go.

I loved how exciting it all got and I loved seeing how it all ended in shiny and sparklies plus more!

The art was just gorgeous, it’s been a while since I read a Hilda comic so I am mostly used to how she looks in the Netflix series, but this was a lot of fun and I really like the style. I should really re-read the other comics as well.

The animals were SO RUDE. Seriously, be a bit kinder to people and Deerfox, thank you.

All in all, if you want a magical exciting adventure this time mostly from Twig’s POV with some dashes of Hilda be sure to check it out!

The fun artwork is there, and all the charm of a silly Nordic adventure on a rainy day, but this Hilda volume feels aimed at an even younger audience. Maybe it's the addition of Twig to the title? Though he does play a large role in the plot. (He meets the dragon who lives in the cave in which Hilda and other forest creatures are hiding from the rain and works very hard to keep to dragon from going home)

Still a fun, quick read, but missing that slightly sharp edge that made the other Hilda books so appealing to this adult reader.

Cute, but I prefer the Hilda comics, even though I love Twig. This one felt more like a cute vignette than a full story, and something about the illustrations threw me off, though I am not sure what, as they are beautiful.

I enjoyed seeing things from Twig's perspective. His logical personality is such a nice opposite to Hilda's crazy adventuring. His little sarcastic thought bubbles were pretty funny! Hilda and Twig make a great pair.
The artwork in this was really beautiful, and the humour was on point.
This book was like a more simple kiddie version of the Hilda graphic novels.

Luke Pearson odpowiada mi w stu procentach. Jego ilustracje, teksty, scenariusz, kolory - wszystko jest doskonałe, miłe, ciepłe, ale i momentami drapieżne. Świetnie buduje napięcie, nawet grozę i fantastycznie bawi się metaforą. W HILDZIE zawsze znajdziemy drugie dno i zawsze jest to piękne przesłanie.

POPKULTUROWY KOCIOŁEK: Hilda i jej wierny towarzysz Rożek wyruszają na codzienną wyprawę w poszukiwaniu przygód, jednak gwałtowna burza zmusza ich do przerwania zabawy. Przyjaciele znajdują schronienie w tajemniczym kopcu, który okazuje się być domem dla wielu leśnych stworzeń. Podczas gdy Hilda pogrąża się w marzeniach, Rożek wyczuwa narastające zagrożenie i postanawia wyjść na zewnątrz, by sprawdzić okolicę. Tam staje oko w oko z gigantycznym, mitycznym białym wężem, który pilnuje starożytnego skarbu.

Kiedy myślimy o współczesnym komiksie dla dzieci, nazwisko Luke Pearson pojawia się w myślach jako jedno z pierwszych. Jego seria o niebieskowłosej Hildzie to już bowiem klasyka gatunku, która dzięki platformie Netflix trafiła do szerokiego grona odbiorców. Takiego uniwersum nie można więc pozostawić niewykorzystanego. Odpowiedzią na zapotrzebowanie rynku jest więc album Hilda i Rożek: Ucieczka przed deszczem będący początkiem zupełnie nowego cyklu.

W albumie tym następuje dość znacząca zmiana perspektywy w stosunku do pierwotnej serii. Choć imię Hildy wciąż widnieje w tytule jako pierwsze, to Rożek staje się głównym motorem napędowym historii. Pomysł autora jest dość odważny, ale okazuje się on strzałem w dziesiątkę. Ten uroczy lisojelonek, przez lata był głównie cichym kompanem dziewczyny, a teraz ma okazję zaprezentować się w pełnej krasie. Tutaj dostajemy wgląd w jego myśli, lęki i niezwykle silne poczucie obowiązku. To on jest tu „tym rozważnym”, on analizuje otoczenie i on, mimo paraliżującego strachu, decyduje się na konfrontację z potworami. Ta zmiana sprawia, że świat Hildy staje się jeszcze bogatszy.

Fabuła komiksu to z pozoru prosta mieszanka przygody, emocji i humoru. Jednak to, co na pierwszy rzut oka wydaje się lekką przygodą, w rzeczywistości jest ciekawie skonstruowaną narracją, w której humor, napięcie i magia przeplatają się ze sobą w sposób angażujący dla czytelnika (zwłaszcza tego młodszego). Pearson naprawdę nieźle łączy elementy folkloru skandynawskiego, przygodę i subtelne przesłanie o przyjaźni i odwadze.

Opowieść jest dynamiczna, tempo akcji szybkie, ale jednocześnie przemyślane. Autor potrafi balansować między momentami lekkiego zagrożenia, a spokojniejszymi scenami, w których bohaterowie odkrywają tajemnice kopca i wchodzą w interakcje z innymi zwierzętami. To sprawia, że komiks nie jest jednowymiarowy, a młody czytelnik uczy się nie tylko reagowania na przygodę, ale także empatii, współpracy i odwagi....

Hilda sets of for a mornings adventure, armed with a sandwich and accompanied by her little companion Twig, who is half fox, half deer. When it starts to rain, the friends look for somewhere to shelter. They go into a small doorway in the side of a mound and find other animals sheltering inside. Soon the animals begin to talk, there is a legend of a giant snake and they begin to scare each other with their tales. Luckily Hilda cannot understand them, but Twig can and thinks it’s time to get out of the cave and get some fresh air. When Twig leaves the cave he discovers something he wasn’t expecting and goes on an adventure, ultimately saving the day and in a clever twist, freeing his friends and his beloved Hilda.

Told in a graphic novel format, this story is full of excitement and adventure, our heroine Hilda and her plucky companion Twig make the story unique and interesting. The way that we can hear what Twig and animals can say, but Hilda cannot, adds so much humour to the story. There are many engaging characters in this series, all with their own personalities. Real characters, such as Hilda and her mum blend perfectly with real life animal characters but also mythical ones, making this a very intriguing read.

The Hilda series feels like stepping into another world, perfect escapism, humour, adventure, a little bit of danger and a satisfying conclusion. Hilda and Twig is a prequel to the original series, but it contains no spoilers so it can be read before or after the other books in this series.

Par amitié pour Hilda, il fera tout pour la protéger, quitte à se confronter à ses pires craintes.

Entre humour, magie et rebondissements, l’album offre un cocktail savoureux qui émerveillera les jeunes lecteurs comme leurs parents. Es ist lange her, dass Luke Pearson ein echtes neues Hilda-Abenteuer rausgebracht hat. Zwischendurch gab es die Netflix-Show, die hat einen so über die Lücke im Herzen getragen und die ist auch sehr kreativ und unkonventionell mit dem Stoff der Comics umgegangen und hat es weitergeführt, aber jetzt wieder "originales" Hilda-Material in Händen zu halten ist schonmal ein gutes Gefühl.
Die Zeichnungen sind immer noch so wie früher, und man merkt jetzt erst genauer, dass sie sich vom Netflix-Cartoon unterscheiden, aber nach ein paar Seiten hat man sich wieder dran gewöhnt.
Ähnlich ist es mit dem Storytelling: es scheint wie eine vor sich dahinmäandernde Kindergeschichte zu beginnen ("bin ich doch langsam zu alt für Hilda, oder hat Pearson sein Pulver verschossen?") und öffnet sich dann doch langsam, in ein Abenteuer für Twig/Hörnchen, inklusive "Monstern", Naturphilosophie und ein wenig Selbstfindung für den Hirschfuchs.
Und am Schluss ist man wieder ganz gerührt von dieser tollen Geschichte und fühlt in sich drin dieses wohlige Gefühl, das man immer beim Lesen von Hilda-Comics hatte früher: da ist es wieder, ich habe es vermisst.

Ich kenn die beiden ja schon von der Zeichentrickserie, aber so in gedruckter Form sind sie auch herzallerliebst! 🥰
Man begleitet Hilda und Hörnchen dabei, wie sie auf Abenteuerjagd gehen. In diesem Fall hat eindeutig Hörnchen seinen großen Auftritt, denn er zeigt sich von seiner mutigen Seite, als es darauf ankommt! Neben den beiden treten auch noch andere Tiere auf.
Zwar ist das Erlebnis nur von kurzer Dauer, aber dennoch hatte ich viel Spaß beim Lesen! Die Verarbeitung des Bandes ist toll, die Handhabung beim Schmökern ist angenehm. Der Druck ist auch super, die Farben leuchten regelrecht. Ich mag auch das Cover und die Haptik super gern, denn einige der Elemente haben einen Reliefdruck (zb die Tropfen). Da hat man gleich noch mehr das Gefühl “dabei” zu sein 😍
Klar, der Comic ist definitiv eher an ein jüngeres Publikum gerichtet, aber auch die ältere Leserschaft kann daran viel Spaß haben.
