Luke Pearson is a British illustrator, cartoonist, and comic book writer best known for the Hilda series of comics for Nobrow Press, and Hilda, the Netflix series based on the comics. He has also storyboarded episodes of the Cartoon Network series Adventure Time, during its fifth and seventh seasons.

It was jarring to have Twig take center stage in this book with thought balloons and full-on conversations with other animals. Once I got used to that, it was a nice adventure about friendship and bravery as HIlda and Twig take shelter from the rain in a burial mound that is harboring some forest animals and one very large surprise.

This story appears to be set sometime before or between the early volumes, when Hilda and her mother still lived in the country.

This felt quite different than the first few volumes. Maybe a bit more kid friendly? Twig is the star of the show, which I didn't mind at all. Some really fun action scenes. Big splash pages throughout.

Very glad I got to be excited for a new Hilda book releasing, and also find it in stores naturally
Was surprised to see Twig take the spotlight with his own thought bubbles and character growth, but it made for one of the more unique volumes, even if it lacks some of the depth the show and later volumes like Stone Forest and Mountain Giant
The show may have ended, so I'm glad I can look forward to new volumes, should Pearson choose to make them. An easy, cosy recommendation even if you don't read graphic novels much

The fun artwork is there, and all the charm of a silly Nordic adventure on a rainy day, but this Hilda volume feels aimed at an even younger audience. Maybe it's the addition of Twig to the title? Though he does play a large role in the plot. (He meets the dragon who lives in the cave in which Hilda and other forest creatures are hiding from the rain and works very hard to keep to dragon from going home)

Still a fun, quick read, but missing that slightly sharp edge that made the other Hilda books so appealing to this adult reader.

Cute, but I prefer the Hilda comics, even though I love Twig. This one felt more like a cute vignette than a full story, and something about the illustrations threw me off, though I am not sure what, as they are beautiful.

Naše oblíbená hrdinka Hilda v komiksovém příběhu, který se hodí i pro mladší děti. My ho čteme opakovaně od necelých tří let.
Díky Hildě Aloisie dobře ví, že dobrodružství bývá trochu na hraně nebezpečí a že kakao u krbu člověk nejvíc ocení, když se vrátí unavený a promočený zvenku.

I enjoyed seeing things from Twig's perspective. His logical personality is such a nice opposite to Hilda's crazy adventuring. His little sarcastic thought bubbles were pretty funny! Hilda and Twig make a great pair.
The artwork in this was really beautiful, and the humour was on point.
This book was like a more simple kiddie version of the Hilda graphic novels.

Hilda też ma przecież wspaniałego przyjaciela ROŻKA, który jest jeleniolisem (tak, takie zwierze istnieje i można go spotkać właśnie w tym komiksie).
HILDĘ pokochałam więc już dawno a wiadomość od KULTURY GNIEWU głosząca wydanie HILDY I ROŻKA. UCIECZKI PRZED DESZCZEM, była jedną z najlepszych w tym roku. Jeśli wezmę pod uwagę właśnie świat komiksu, to był to najmilszy prezent od wydawcy... a dodają jeszcze piękne naklejki - ja i naklejki, to też długa historia... wiec ją skrócę do paru słów - bardzo lubię naklejki.
Luke Pearson odpowiada mi w stu procentach. Jego ilustracje, teksty, scenariusz, kolory - wszystko jest doskonałe, miłe, ciepłe, ale i momentami drapieżne. Świetnie buduje napięcie, nawet grozę i fantastycznie bawi się metaforą. W HILDZIE zawsze znajdziemy drugie dno i zawsze jest to piękne przesłanie.
UCIECZKA PRZED DESZCZEM jest piękna z wielu względów, ale tym dla mnie najważniejszym jest PRZYJAŹŃ i... waga danego SŁOWA. W dzisiejszych czasach - nie piszę tego bez przykrych doświadczeń - dane słowo nic nie znaczy, wielu ludzi nie wie, co to honor, co to obietnica i wywiązywanie się z niej. Dzisiaj najlepiej wszystko mieć na papierze i nikomu nie ufać. To bardzo przykre, ale takie opowieści jak ta pokazują, że jednak ludzkość tęskni do tym, co dobre i piękne i ja głęboko wierzę w to, że sytuacja się zmieni, że znów będziemy sobie ufać... kiedyś. Teraz zaś życzę wszystkim szukającym pięknych wartości - poznania HILDY I ROŻKA. Ta dwójka podnosi na duchu!
Warto też zaznaczyć, że w tym komiksie jest bardzo dobre poczucie humoru. Mamy tu zarówno humor słowny, jak i sytuacyjny. Ja bardzo cenię dobre poczucie humoru. Kolejnym atutem, który faktycznie przyciągnął mnie do tej bohaterki, to oczywiście fakt, że autor korzysta z legend, mamy więc magiczne istoty, dawne opowieści, skarby i bohaterstwo. Super sprawa!
Komiks jest ślicznie wydany. Okładka twarda z lśniącymi elementami (krople deszczu, HILDA I ROŻEK, napisy). Papier również porządny ("smacznie" pachnący). Bardzo, ale to bardzo polecam KAŻDEMU!

It is time for a rainy day adventure with Twig and Hilda!


A big big thank you to my hubby for gifting me this one for my birthday in February! This was one of my most OMG need to get books from 2024 and I am so glad I got it in 2025.

In this wonderful adventure, which takes place before all the adventures that Hilda has in Trollberg as she is back in her little red house, Hilda and Twig are going out and have a wonderful day, but what happens when the rain starts to pour? You hide in a strange hill of course which may or may not be as safe as you think (I mean, as someone who has read multiple Hilda books along with stuff about folklore just knew that this hill with an opening wasn’t just any old hill).

I absolutely loved this story and I loved that Twig was mostly the protagonist over Hilda. Hilda also gets some scenes, but most of the time we see Twig’s thoughts and see him go on a wild adventure in which he makes a new friend (unsure if I would call that a friend, but I guess in some ways it is, just a friend you don’t want to be when she is hungry, haha). Twig is such a sweetie and I am so happy we could follow him in this adventure. But even before that, I had such a giggle at how he reacted to Hilda’s suggestions of where to go.

I loved how exciting it all got and I loved seeing how it all ended in shiny and sparklies plus more!

The art was just gorgeous, it’s been a while since I read a Hilda comic so I am mostly used to how she looks in the Netflix series, but this was a lot of fun and I really like the style. I should really re-read the other comics as well.

The animals were SO RUDE. Seriously, be a bit kinder to people and Deerfox, thank you.

All in all, if you want a magical exciting adventure this time mostly from Twig’s POV with some dashes of Hilda be sure to check it out!

Hilda sets of for a mornings adventure, armed with a sandwich and accompanied by her little companion Twig, who is half fox, half deer. When it starts to rain, the friends look for somewhere to shelter. They go into a small doorway in the side of a mound and find other animals sheltering inside. Soon the animals begin to talk, there is a legend of a giant snake and they begin to scare each other with their tales. Luckily Hilda cannot understand them, but Twig can and thinks it’s time to get out of the cave and get some fresh air. When Twig leaves the cave he discovers something he wasn’t expecting and goes on an adventure, ultimately saving the day and in a clever twist, freeing his friends and his beloved Hilda.

Told in a graphic novel format, this story is full of excitement and adventure, our heroine Hilda and her plucky companion Twig make the story unique and interesting. The way that we can hear what Twig and animals can say, but Hilda cannot, adds so much humour to the story. There are many engaging characters in this series, all with their own personalities. Real characters, such as Hilda and her mum blend perfectly with real life animal characters but also mythical ones, making this a very intriguing read.

The Hilda series feels like stepping into another world, perfect escapism, humour, adventure, a little bit of danger and a satisfying conclusion. Hilda and Twig is a prequel to the original series, but it contains no spoilers so it can be read before or after the other books in this series.

Connu pour son univers tendre et fantastique, l’auteur revient ici avec une histoire enlevée, destinée aux enfants dès 6 ans, et qui saura également charmer les plus grands.

Dès les premières pages, nous retrouvons Hilda, la courageuse fillette aux cheveux bleus, et son fidèle compagnon Twig. Rien ne saurait entamer leur soif de découverte : ni le froid, ni la pluie battante, ni même un orage qui les surprend en pleine exploration de la forêt. Lorsqu’ils se réfugient dans un étrange monticule de terre, le récit prend alors une tournure inattendue : Twig, malgré sa peur, sent qu’une menace scaliforme rôde. Par amitié pour Hilda, il fera tout pour la protéger, quitte à se confronter à ses pires craintes.

Entre humour, magie et rebondissements, l’album offre un cocktail savoureux qui émerveillera les jeunes lecteurs comme leurs parents. Le trait dynamique de Luke Pearson donne vie à des scènes pleines de fantaisie, et le rythme soutenu ne laisse aucune place à l’ennui. Es ist lange her, dass Luke Pearson ein echtes neues Hilda-Abenteuer rausgebracht hat. Zwischendurch gab es die Netflix-Show, die hat einen so über die Lücke im Herzen getragen und die ist auch sehr kreativ und unkonventionell mit dem Stoff der Comics umgegangen und hat es weitergeführt, aber jetzt wieder "originales" Hilda-Material in Händen zu halten ist schonmal ein gutes Gefühl.
Die Zeichnungen sind immer noch so wie früher, und man merkt jetzt erst genauer, dass sie sich vom Netflix-Cartoon unterscheiden, aber nach ein paar Seiten hat man sich wieder dran gewöhnt.
Ähnlich ist es mit dem Storytelling: es scheint wie eine vor sich dahinmäandernde Kindergeschichte zu beginnen ("bin ich doch langsam zu alt für Hilda, oder hat Pearson sein Pulver verschossen?") und öffnet sich dann doch langsam, in ein Abenteuer für Twig/Hörnchen, inklusive "Monstern", Naturphilosophie und ein wenig Selbstfindung für den Hirschfuchs.
Und am Schluss ist man wieder ganz gerührt von dieser tollen Geschichte und fühlt in sich drin dieses wohlige Gefühl, das man immer beim Lesen von Hilda-Comics hatte früher: da ist es wieder, ich habe es vermisst.

A brand-new adventure featuring Hilda and Twig. This is everything I love about the Hilda series. Cozy, adventurous, humorous, and sweet.

Back in the wilderness, Hilda is on the lookout for adventure. Twig just wants to make it home in one piece. When the pair get caught in the rain, they seek shelter only to discover a mystery of monstrous proportions.

An adorable story filled with mystery and adventure. Love that we get to follow Twig in this one and get his perspective on Hilda's adventure-loving nature.

The artwork is absolutely gorgeous.

A fantastic addition to the Hilda series. Hoping there are more to come in this series because I can never get enough of Hilda and Twig's adventures.

This book felt a bit odd, with Twig as the main character with fully human thought processes and the ability to converse with other (presumably normal) animals. There is nothing inherently wrong about this as a conceit, but it did not really feel consistent with the other books in the series, doubly so with the various magical animals from throughout that are shown to actually be able to talk and act like people.

That said, it is a fun little story and fits the Nordic folklore style of the series in most other way. I really like the giant snake and especially the revelation that it is actually the animated pile of burial mound treasure.

Having loved the Hilda TV series, I was thrilled to see this graphic novel in a book store.

Following Hilda and Twig on one of their daily adventures, the tables are turned slightly as the story is mainly told from the viewpoint of Twig. He meets new, rather rude in some cases (when questioning his genus) friends when they take shelter from the rain and has to acknowledge the bravery he regularly displays but always overlooks when he's needed to save Hilda from certain doom.

Beautifully illustrated and a great story, it was great to see the beloved characters in their natural genre.

A new Hilda comic?! How could I not know? Of course, I bought this on sight and read it as soon as I could. The Hilda comics are some of my favourites and I always enjoy these little slices of adventuring and magic and nature. Having one from Twig's perspective was very cute, and I'm excited for Luke Pearson to release more of these (please!).

A trek in the woods leads to a giant magical snake. Conflict! Talking! Magic!

It's a classic Hilda story in a lot of ways: an adventure, a magical creature, some shenanigans, a peaceful resolution. Unlike the other stories I've read, there's a lot of Twig's interiority in this one, which I'll take but am still mulling over. I don't yet see how all the stories will fit together, but I'm excited by the prospect.

What a cute little tale of the best of Hilda’s companions. Loved reading what Twig is actually thinking when he adventures with Hilda and the additional creature lore that was introduced. All in all, a very worthy and wonderful addition to the Hilda canon. If this truly becomes a Spinoff series, I look forward to the future stories. Will definitely be rereading this one.

Hilda et Twig se retrouvent dans une grotte en attendant que la pluie se calme. Ils ont le temps d'imaginer des histoires farfelues sur le véritable habitant de cette grotte… Cette BD a tout pour nous plaire : de l'aventure, des personnages super drôles et des dessins incroyables ! (et aussi Twig, le renard-cerf que tu voudras sûrement adopter à la fin).

Pearson's art is phenomenal, but this new Hilda series aimed at younger readers and set while Hilda still lives in the country, doesn't quite gel. The story is slight and the stakes are low, though it is pleasant enough to return for another Hilda adventure (with equal if not more time given to Twig).
