'Developing Reading Skills' by Linda Markstein is part of a reading skills development series designed for adults and ESL students. The themes are names and naming customs, cities, education and education systems, sports, and superstitions. The book is filled with interesting contents. Fine. I agree with the author by reading the text three times and answering the questions, students' reading skills will be developed. I, ESL grown-up, picked up interesting facts in history and different culture and idioms.

But unfortunately, there are a few errored facts. For example, it says that the population in Mexico City is 'about 20 million (this book was published in 1994), and it will probably be more than 32 million in the year 2000 on page 53. But I found out its population is much less than 20 million in 1990s and 18,457,000 in 2000. The prediction has too much gap to the fact. Another error I found out on page 110, Emperor Theodosius II of Rome stopped the Olympic in 394 A.D. But it was Emperor Theodosius I who stopped the Olympic in 394. It was Theodosius I who ruled Rome from A.D. 347 to 395 A.D.

I do not know if there are more errors in this book, but since this book is not fiction, the mistakes should be edited and revised, especially when the books are used for students at school.

p.s. I found out this book is not published any longer with certain reasons, but I am shocked to find out that Amazon sells it for $46 for less than 200 pages.
