"The Wedding Hitch" by Claire McCauley is a delightful romantic comedy following a bride in search of a groom. After a couple of dark thrillers, this was just what the doctor ordered.
Meet Róisín O’Reilly, an Irish woman who designs and crafts historical costumes and lives in Bath. When she wins her dream wedding in a contest offering the venue and all the trimmings at the grand Sylverley House, she is ecstatic. Unfortunately, her fiancé, Nate, isn't keen on marriage to her or at all. After ten years together, Róisín decides enough is enough and leaves him. Now, she has a venue but no groom. What's a woman to do? Go look for one, of course. Easier said than done!
The venue is reserved for only a year, leaving no time to waste. Thus begins a series of disastrous dates that provide comic relief and some cringe-worthy moments. Between searching for a new place to live, going on dates, working, and dealing with her eccentric family, she tries to get her life back on track. She forms connections with the people working at the estate, including the mysterious trust advisor, Tristan Nash, and his dog Bear. We also meet her good friends and her fairy-goddaughter, Esme, a precious six-year-old with cerebral palsy.
I enjoyed this adorable romantic comedy. The only hitch? There wasn't much romance in it or a well-developed relationship. There were hardly any interactions between Róisín and her intended groom, and their relationship lacked depth. It went from zero to 1000 in a heartbeat. All we got was the introduction of the man she had a crush on, with no other reason given for her attraction to him except for his looks, air of mystery, and brooding ways (reminiscent of Mr. Darcy).
The book starts slowly, focusing on descriptions of the estate and fashion. However, it improved after the breakup. I appreciated the setting, the witty banter, and the dating escapades. The issues addressed in the book—caring for a handicapped child, marriage problems, and financial troubles—added depth. Róisín's lively personality endeared her to me, and I found myself rooting for her.
The supporting cast was well-developed, and I felt immersed in the story, participating in the tea parties and experiencing the surroundings. I would have liked to see more interaction between Róisín and her chosen man, but that's a minor complaint. Overall, this was a fun and charming read that I greatly enjoyed. I rate the book 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it to fans of romantic comedies looking for a quick and enjoyable read.
* Thank you NetGalley and (publisher) for the opportunity to read this arc. All opinions are my own.
I received a free copy of, The Wedding Hitch, by Claire McCauley, from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. When planning a wedding, we know the must haves, location, flowers, dresses, tux, and groom of course. Roisin has everything but the groom. Roison won a dream wedding, but her boyfriend does not want to marry her, so she has a year to find a groom, easy right. This is a great beach read. I was rooting for Roisin all the way.
This is my first introduction to author Claire McCauley... and I am not disappointed. I enjoy books revolving around weddings... I find the narrative takes me away from the 'everyday,' and cajoles my mind and heart into a festive mode. After all, a happy, true-love-ending, is a beautiful thing!
This is a lovely romcom that delighted my senses. I became vested in Roisin's journey, and I was satisfied with the way the author wrapped it all up with a bow at the end, satisfying my expectations. (Oh! There is a surprise revelation that elevated the finality of the storyline. You've been happily warned!)
I really enjoyed the lovely descriptions of Bath, and the English countryside. The characters were well-rounded, and I'm excited to say you will meet a delightful little fairy-goddaughter that will make you smile.
I read this book late at night, (1:00am kinda late), and it helped me drift away to sleep with pleasant thoughts. I was eager to read more the next evening. In summation, I recommend this book for your own reading pleasure and thank Joffe Books, and Claire McCauley, for a copy of this eARC.
I couldn't help but fall for Roisin and cheer her on as she tries to find a husband. All the characters were great and there were some really funny moments.
If you enjoy fun, lighthearted, g-rated reads that are very light on the romance, then you'll love this one.
The Wedding Hitch by Claire McCauley is a romantic comedy with a side of history and fashion. Róisín, a newly engaged fashion designer who specializes in historically accurate costumes, is planning the wedding of her dreams. During a visit to a wedding venue she loves, she enters a contest for a free wedding and wins! Upon telling her fiancé the exciting news, he admits that although he loves her, he doesn't want to get married. Róisin is devastated but doesn't want to give up her dream wedding, so she has exactly one year to find a new groom. She makes a deal with the venue's staff to make them some historically accurate costumes in exchange for room and board while she sorts out a new place to live and searches for a groom. The storyline is cute, and the characters are well thought out and loveable. I totally couldn't put this book down and read it in one day. Thank you, #NetGalley, for ARC access to #theweddinghitch in exchange for an honest review.
A romcom with plenty of rom and even more com that legitimately made me laugh out loud. This story about Roisin O’Reilly is pacy yet all the characters have depth. I felt for Roisin when she wins a wedding and becomes single, and enjoyed everything she goes through as a result. There was also a twist I somehow didn’t see coming. Lovely Bath setting and the Irish diaspora main character gave it another layer of depth. Fun summery read - five stars. Thanks Joffe books for my NetGalley eARC.
Thank you to the publisher and netgalley for an ARC in return for an honest review.
Engaged- ✅ Perfect wedding venue-✅
All that’s missing is a way to pay for the wedding of your dreams. At least that’s what Róisin thinks after touring the Slyverley House. After entering a competition for an all expenses paid wedding at Slyverley House, things go from bad to worse. Unfortunately, she finds out that her supposed fiancé never wanted to marry her. With only twelve months to claim her prize, she has to find a new man to marry!
This was filled to the brim with tension. Following in the journey of finding a new groom in one year was fun and kind of intense. I found myself hoping that the two characters I wanted to end up together did. On the other hand, there were one or two characters I didn’t care about at all. Overall, this book was filled with fun, tension, love, and a twist I didn’t see coming! Will she find Mr. Right before the deadline? Or will she be forced to give up the wedding of her dreams?
This is an ARC Book Review. Publish date: April 29, 2024, by Joffe Books. I want to thank NetGalley for an eARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Roisin wants nothing more than to have a Regency themed wedding at the Sylverley Estates. There's just one small problem... she doesn't have a groom!
Roisin and her fiancé, Nate, visit Sylverley Estates to learn more about the amenities and wedding packages they offer. While there, Roisin enters a competition to win her dream wedding, all expenses paid. One day, weeks later, she receives a call telling her that she has won the prize and that she and her fiancé must come choose a date for their wedding. When she tells Nate about the competition and the amazing prize they have won, he finally admits to her that he never wanted to get married.
Following her break-up, Roisin needs a place to live and a place to sew her historical fashion costumes and she is offered the chance to stay in a small cottage at the Sylverley Estates in exchange for costumes for the estate keepers. She attends high-tea and gets to know all of the wonderful people who live and work at the Estates, including the trust advisor, Tristan Nash, who also lives in a cottage on the Estates.
Her friends convince her that she can't let Nate take her dream wedding away from her just because he does not want to get married. So, she chooses a wedding date for almost one year away and plans to try and find "the one" to make her dreams come true. She goes on blind dates set up by friends, goes to a speed dating event, accidentally dates her second cousin and an American man who is married. Will Roisin be able to find "the one" and still get to have her dream wedding all expenses paid?
This book made me laugh out loud and swoon. I became invested in Roisin and found myself cringing on her behalf while also rooting for her to find "the one" to marry at the beautiful Sylverley Estates. She was funny, quirky, unapologetically herself and proud of her love of history. The side characters were all wonderful and added to the story in amazing ways. I especially loved her fairy-goddaughter, Esme, a spunky and curious six-year old with cerebral palsy.
Roisin is looking forward to her wedding but her fiancé says they have to save up and wait. She enters a contest and earns a dream wedding but Nate then tells her he actually doesn’t want to get married. Undeterred Roisin is determined to have her dream wedding and according to the contest rules she has a year to find a groom. This was a fun book as we follow along with Roisin as she searches for a groom. The pacing was good and kept my interest throughout the book. The characters were great and it was overall a fun romcom!
I wanted to love this book more than I did. I think the premise of the story was intriguing and entertaining but, for me personally, the execution missed the mark.
The story is about Roisen, our FMC, who had been dating her boyfriend for 10 years. They had recently gotten engaged, or so she thought, before the story started, and were looking for the perfect venue. Roisen had her heart set on a historical-looking venue (think Bridgerton theme), however, her boyfriend, Nate was reluctant to go to the venue, to set a date or even a budget. Roisen entered a contest and won an all-expenses-paid wedding at her dream venue, but Nate was not as thrilled and Roisen realized that he didn't actually want to be married. Roisen up-ended her life found her own place (on the property of the wedding venue) and set out to find the new love of her life and potential husband, all within a short 12-month period. Roisen went on a few disastrous dates and met some horrible candidates. Meanwhile, Tristan Nash, the General Manager of the wedding venue, was slowly falling for Roisin and she was falling for him. They eventually get together and have a HEA.
Well...here is the thing. Why did they fall in love with each other? We get plenty of details of Roisin's work (which I find very interesting and the level of detail is satisfying to understand the garments that she makes and why she loves history). We get to know Roisin's two closest couple friends and their children. I must admit that Abi and Herbie were supposed to be the comic relief in the story and, while Herbie is funny, I didn't find myself chuckling out loud while reading his parts. We get a good understanding of the struggles that Gemma and Joe have with Esme's disability and how much Roisin means to Esme and vice versa. We DO NOT get a lot of interaction between Roisin and Tristan. So, why exactly did they fall in love with each other? I think we needed a few scenes where they interacted more, maybe some light flirting, building a friendship, etc. Then, when the part where they had their first kiss came along, I would have understood and believed in it even more. Tristan almost seemed like a modern Mr. Darcy. Cold, distant, shows little emotion and could come off as not liking someone. But even Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet interacted more than we saw Tristen and Roisin interact. So I didn't connect or even believe the attraction between the two of these MCs but we didn't see any sort of a build-up to it. Tristan's true identity. Well, this was a shocker. Again, we saw a few interactions with the widowed Mr. Sylver but we didn't hear any parts of the conversation that would lead us to believe in the tension between the two characters, apart from her maybe not liking the new general manager. Why didn't we get any information on Tristen's background? I think this story could have benefited from being written in a dual POV. I didn't connect to his identity struggle, I didn't believe his feelings or attraction for Roisin and I don't have any indication as to just how attractive or sexy the man actually is. I also felt that the first 70% of the book dragged on. It's not like the last 30% was better (maybe the last 10%) but it wasn't good enough to continue the book. I didn't want to leave it as "not read" so I pushed myself to finish it but I was drawn to the context. Again, the story was fine but I didn't enjoy the execution. Thanks to NetGalley for making this book available on a "Read Now" basis.

The Wedding Hitch by Claire McCauley was a delight to read.
Róisín wants nothing more than to marry her fiance' Nate that she has been in a relationship with for ten years. She pushes Nate to go to the opening of an estate and decides that this is the venue that she has always dreamed about. While touring the estate, she enters a contest and then promptly forgets about it amidst life's daily grind and dealing with her mother and sister.
When she unexpectedly wins that contest - the wedding of her dreams at Sylverley and tells Nate, she is given the surprise of her life when Nate tells her he doesn't even WANT to get married, much less there. Stunned, Róisín goes to friends who help her try and restart her life - her business is out of Nate's apartment, her home was with Nate and she suddenly finds herself at odds with everything she thought she would have.
She, cheered on by friends, decides to find a husband for that wedding (she has one year to have it) and the best part of the book begins - finding a husband, but most importantly, finding herself again along the way.
I enjoyed everything about this book and laughed out loud as Róisín's adventures to the altar took place.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC in lieu of an honest opinion. This book was a wonderful treat!
Róisín is dreaming her wedding day at the Sylverley Estate . When she learns her mother used the money that were for her wedding she enters a competition with all expenses paid . When she wins and she tell her fiance Nate he admits to her that he doesn't want a marriage or children . So she break yp with him but her friends persuade her to claim her prize . Now the only thing that misses is the groom , she only has one year to find her soulmate and marry him . What can go wrong ? I received this book from netgalley and the publicer as an ARC . Thank you . All thoughts and opinions are my own .
I very much enjoyed this book! It was easy to become invested in Róisín’s character. (I completely side with her in the alleged “misunderstanding,” by the way.) I loved watching her struggle to find her way, make the best of a rough situation, and try new things. 10/10 would recommend.
Thank you NetGalley for the eARC of The Wedding Hitch! I truly loved this charming, funny, and entirely individualistic book for so many reasons.
To summarize this review, I really enjoyed this book and will definitely read everything this author writes! Róisín O’Reilly is a truly lovable protagonist with a clear sense of self, which was a big part of what I adored about this book. The concept of a wedding with no groom was so fun, the Sylverley Estate was described in such lovely detail, the characters and their conversations were all so unique, the dating adventures were hilarious and tragic, the ending was perfect, BUT I felt the romance and chemistry was lacking during several portions of this book. This did not, however, deter me in the slightest from reading it. It’s truly a phenomenal read.
Our girl in The Wedding Hitch has a unique career as a historical costume designer, an eccentric Irish family that she loves and begrudges in equal measure, and a found family of interesting characters, particularly her fairy goddaughter Esme: an inquisitive six year old with cerebral palsy.
When we meet Róisín, she is engaged to her longterm boyfriend Nate and it is clear that they have very different outlooks on what their future will hold. Specifically, Róisín desires to get married on the stunning and historic Sylverley grounds, straight out of a Regency era novel.
SPOILERS AHEAD:
When Nate admits that he never intended to propose to her in the first place, Róisín doesn’t beg or try to compromise on her steadfast desires. She grieves her relationship while also knowing that she will not budge on her desire for marriage or children and settle for less than she truly deserves. That immediately endeared me to this character.
The hitch? Well, there are many of them and the play on words is fun and subtle and obvious in all the right ways for our seamstress. Róisín wins and accepts a free wedding at Sylverley in a contest with just one small hitch: she has no groom! She has a year to get hitched…no small feat, there.
What follows is nearly a year of dating escapades (all tragic and hilarious in their own way), failed attempts by Nate to win back his girl, a charming romp through the quaint and fairy tale Sylverley grounds, and a slow burn romance between Róisín and the general manager (later revealed as the last Sylverley heir), Tristan Nash.
One of the best parts of this story to me is that, in true Róisín fashion, she chooses to use her “free wedding” at Sylverley as a charity ball for cerebral palsy instead with her fairy goddaughter Esme as the guest of honor. And better yet, Tristan proposes right before they are announced at the charity ball, a year after he escorted her disheveled self into the same room to accept her free wedding.
Now, the reason why this is a four and not five star read for me: I felt like I was missing SO much romance and chemistry between Tristan and Róisín until the very end! Tristan was meant to be a bit of a loner and a bit aloof but he still lacked a lot of personality to me until the very end. I found their conversations to be a bit dull which was in stark contrast to how quick and witty and entertaining the conversations between most other characters were.
Overall, I adored this book in so many ways and Róisín is an excellent example of a female protagonist who truly doesn’t need much to hold her own. For the most part, she was a great communicator with healthy boundaries, self-worth, and a clear identity.

Thank you so much to Joffe Books and NetGalley for an eARC in return for an honest review of "The Wedding Hitch". All of my opinions are honest and mine.
The Wedding Hitch follows our heroine Róisín O’Reilly, who has been with her boyfriend for 10 years. When she cannot have the dream wedding she has wanted, to her surprise, wins a expensed-paid wedding at Sylverley House. The only issue comes after winning this prize, that her boyfriend does not want to go through with a wedding. Heartbroken, Róisín is now on the search for a groom to her dream wedding, all while trying to sort out what life is like after losing the person she's been with for a decade.
I really liked all the characters in the book (maybe not fiancé Nate). Róisín comes off as being earnest, kind, and tenacious. She has a good group of friends that are like family; they are always rallying around one another. I enjoyed the the quirkiness of Róisín's line of work.
I did enjoy the plot, however some areas of the plot were very hyper-focused in, when I was ready to move on. Without giving a lot away, it seemed we got to the happily ever after very rushed for my enjoyment.
Overall, this was a good read, and this would make for a great vacation read.
Roisin O'Reilly is on top of the world. Her boyfriend of ten years has finally proposed and then she enters a competition for an all-expenses paid dream wedding and, to her surprise, she wins. What could possibly go wrong? However when she conveys the good news to her fiancé he is less than impressed and confesses that he doesn't actually want to get married after all. Roisin now has a year to find a suitable groom in order to claim her prize. This was a fun read and made a nice change from reading about murder and mayhem. Thanks to the Pigeonhole and the author for the opportunity of reading this book.
I read this on The Pigeonhole and loved everything about it! It’s a book full of great characters and full of fun! The main character is Róisín who works incredibly hard at her job as a dressmaker and designer of clothing that is accurate in its historical detail and I loved reading details about her sewing. She has her heart set on a period wedding in a suitably historic setting and visits the perfect venue with her fiancé Nate. Unfortunately, the cost is going to be way beyond their means so she enters a competition to win the wedding of her dreams. Of course she wins but this is where the problems begin … There follows a catalogue of disasters, mistakes, misunderstandings, estrangements and reconciliations. The wedding is on and off like a switch but in the end … well I can’t possibly reveal that or I’ll spoil it for you! This is all backed up by a cast of warm-hearted characters who you will love. Esme is the star of the show - she may only be young but she has strong opinions and knows exactly what she wants! If you want to read a book that is brimful of warmth and heart then jump into this fabulous debut novel and escape into Roisin’s life!
This story was easy to read and not easy to put down! Very enjoyable. The plot could have gone in various directions, but after many detours arrived at a satisfying conclusion.
Róisín wins a fabulous wedding at a country house near Bath; it will be the day of her dreams. Unfortunately she breaks up with her boyfriend of ten years who 'accidentally' became her fiance one Christmas and finally admits he doesn't want to get married. That means Róisín now has twelve months to find The One.
Speed dating and blind dates are strewn with disasters but at least she now has somewhere to live in one of the cottages on the country house estate in exchange for making authentic regency outfits for the staff.
“Róisín has won her dream wedding. Now she just needs a groom . . .
All Róisín’s engagement woes are solved when she enters a competition for an all-expenses-paid dream wedding at stunning Sylverley House — and to her astonishment she wins!
Then her fiancé Nate drops a bombshell. He never wanted to get married.
There’s only one thing for it. Róisín breaks up with Nate and sets out to find the real love of her life. But she only has twelve months before her prize expires . . .
She has the stunning venue, the designer dress, the bridesmaids, the cake and the flowers.
Now she just needs to find Mr Right.”
I read this book on the Pigeonhole app, one stave per day over 10 days, commenting along with other readers. I found this book a wonderful lighthearted read, it’s both funny and romantic. It’s a perfect summer feel good read!
I loved this romance! Roisin finds the perfect venue for her dream wedding, enters a competition and wins, much to her delight. Unfortunately her fiancé does not share her enthusiasm and decides not to marry her. She must find a willing bridegroom within a year if she is to avail of her prize. She goes back to dating with no success and is ready to give up on her dream. A handsome manager at the venue appears to be the perfect match, but seems uninterested in her. This book is a perfect mix of humour, poignancy and romance. It was a real page-turner and I was sad to reach the end. It is the author’s first published novel and I will be looking out for her next one!
Personally, I read for escapism and entertainment. The Wedding Hitch was exactly what the doctor ordered and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked the inclusion of history and historical fashion. My only complaint was the rather speedy ending.
Many thanks to Pigeonhole and Claire McCauley for the chance to read this book.
An entertaining read! This book kept me guessing which way it was going to go. At times resembled a very curvy road. With that said the author created very interesting characters. Several standouts in the ensemble cast, Esme, Perky. I only had one thing that detracted from my enjoyment of this book. Naming a set of twins Hyssop and Borage is down right cruel!
I received an advance reader copy from the publisher. Any review is voluntary, honest.
I loved this fun romantic comedy and am already looking forward to the next book by this author who is new to me. Just imagine being newly engaged and winning the wedding of your dreams at a posh resort - that's what happens to Roisin - the only problem is the next thing that happens is her fiance gets cold feet and doesn't want to be married. She's got a year to find a replacement groom and the hilarious, often touching journey she goes on makes for a great read.
Thank you so much to the author for a chance to read this book early! It was so cute. This book is about a girl named Roisin (said "Rosheen") who is engaged and wins an all inclusive wedding to her dream venue, Sylverley House. She has to use it within one year, which shouldn't be a problem since she's already engaged, but then her fiance says he actually doesn't want to get married. She realizes their dreams and values are different so they break up and she's left with 11.5 months to find a groom! She gets a job designing period costumes for the staff. She also gets to live in a cottage on site since she lived with her ex-fiance. Tristan is the manager of Sylverley and they have a connection, but hes also really cagey in someways and theres a lot of lack of communication between the 2. This isnt a love triangle but both men do come and go from her life (the ex and Tristan). The book has just enough regency influence to scratch the itch for us non regency lovers, but not so much as to detract from the contemporary nature. The author said she wanted the regency vibes without the boring bits and I think she did great with that! I also loved the fact that this book doesn't take a completely predictable route. It is an HEA and "typical" romance, but it had an added element that I really liked. I also loved the emphasis on the MARRIAGE, not the WEDDING. I think thats something more young people need to think about. Overall, cute romance!
I enjoyed this book so much!! Having a fantastic wedding is all Roisin wants. After she wins the Wedding contest at the Sylverley House she thinks her dreams will come true. However, life has other plans. She has to have the wedding within one year and her fiancée doesn’t really want to get married! McCauley has you rooting for Roisin as she searches for another Mr Right before she runs out of time!
This book tells the story of Róisín, who dreams of a Regency-themed wedding with her fiancé. She wins the wedding of her dreams, only to find out that her fiancé won't marry her. Left with only one year to find a groom, Roisin embarks on a journey filled with challenges…
I enjoyed the book and became attached to the characters. I felt empathy for the main character as she navigated through her struggles, hopes, and deception. I would have loved to see more interaction between the main characters; I found myself craving more banter. Overall, it was a nice read that puts you in a good mood!
Thanks NetGalley and Joffe Books for an eARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
