So much for sanctuary. Kit Parson doesn’t feel any safer than she was before she first stepped into the Maw of Mayhem, and things are going from bad to worse. Something big is definitely going down in the paranormal community… and inside Kit. Now that her inner beast has awoken, all it wants is out. The only thing Kit wants is Grim, but he’s got issues of his own.

Fingered for a crime he didn’t commit and injured by the witch’s spell, his cat Darke has control of their form. He doesn’t play well with others, and tensions with the crew are at an all-time high.

With the witches’ elite assassins on their trail, can Darke and the crew put aside their differences to keep Kit safe and get back to the MC? And as the clock ticks toward the vote with Grim’s reputation in shambles, will there be an MC to go back to?

My Rating: 3 ⭐⭐⭐
Series Rating: 3.5 ⭐⭐⭐✨

We Have:
✅ M/F Romance
✅ Shifters, Witches, Vampires
✅ Fated Mates
✅ Mystery & Prophecy
✅ Virgin FMC
✅ He Falls First
✅ Motorcycle Club Vibes
✅ Quick Read (<250 pages)
✅ Smut with growls, grit, and good god filthy mouths
✅ Power struggles and political chaos
✅ Banter, bonding, and one grumpy vampire I will now die for (looking at you, Mr. A)

Let’s start with the obvious: I’m gonna die on the Mr. Asorav hill. Love him. Like… capital L love him. Don’t @ me.

Now. This book gave me a lot— It was different than book 1. It wasn’t at all lacking… but it didn’t have the same chaotic chokehold. Book two slowed down, took a breath, and served up a buffet of reveals and mystery that had me nodding like “okay, okay, I see what you’re doing.” It didn’t have me feral—but it had me locked in. This wasn’t a miss—it was a middle-book doing what middle books do: connecting the dots and setting the stage. And it did that well.

That said—there was a LOT of story here. We got big reveals (like Kit’s true purpose), we got clarity (finally), and we got more of that solid crew dynamic that’s slowly pulling together into something I’m truly enjoying. Deuce, Triss, Brick? I’m invested. They’re weird and chaotic and messy, and I love them.

As for the POV—it’s dual: one FMC, one MMC… plus their sassy inner cats. PLUS we get discussions with the side characters, during the MC POV switches, and while it’s clever and adds depth, it did get a little tangled during fast banter or high-emotion convos. A few “wait… who said that?” moments popped up. It’s not broken - just takes some adjusting.

I like this series—and I think a lot of folks will vibe with the concept, the world, and the spice level. The paranormal/motorcycle club/spicy fantasy blend is a very specific taste, and when you hit the right audience? It lands.

Now. Let’s talk smut.
Because yes. It’s here. And it is smutty. Grim’s mouth needs a MF warning label. Pierced MMC? Check. Possessive vibes? Fuuuuck yes. A filthy AF mouth that made me cackle and squeal? Absolutely. Now was it all caps bold italicized smutty? Meh. But let’s be real—my smut-o-meter runs high. Ok fuck you it’s through the roof but whatever, this absolutely scratched the itch I didn’t know I had. It was solid. Satisfying. Filthy in the right places and executed oh so well. No complaints. The chemistry is on fire and the tension builds exactly right. I’ve said it already but HOLY FUCK If this book ever did get a duet version?????? 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨

NOW….. this series has serious potential. And I see what A.K. is building here. There’s prophecy. There’s found family. There’s tension and longing and chaos—and I truly believe if book 3 brings the fire (action, plot twist, smut explosion), this series could be a low-key fave for me. I’m rooting for it. If you want heavy worldbuilding and slow-burn tension, this probably isn’t your vibe. But if you want shifters, witches, prophecies, high heat, and power struggles wrapped in fast-paced novella format? Baaaayyybeeeeee, you’re gonna eat this shit up.

Things have gone from bad to worse for Kit, Grim and the MC. Grim was found guilty of a crime he didn’t commit, and a witch’s spell has left him injured. Kit’s cat has awoken but has not shown up in the flesh although she and Darke know they are mates and converse with each other. Speaking of Darke he is now on his own since Grim is incapacitated and unable to speak or respond to anything around him.

The Darkling, Asorav is trying to help but enemies are all around them, vampires, witches and even some of the MC’s own. Asorav manages to get most of the crew safely away but Grim and Kit, must remain and Brick and Deuce stay behind to help in any way they can. When the witches close in it was Asorav that leads them to safety even though it took them through sewers leaving them wondering if they made the wrong choice.

Grim finally appears but only to Kit and wants his awakening to remain a secret for a while. There is no doubt that they are being betrayed with Nikki leading the march. Nikki is the one who wanted to become Queen and when Grim refused her she went for blood. It would take the Queen of vampires, Aryanna, to extend them a haven, although temporary it gave them a chance to clean off and you would have to read this book to understand the degree of filth and who knows what else is covering them.

Grim and Kit finally have the sex they both craved and it was another thing you must read for yourself to get the full sexy impact of it. So far, all the things that were meant to release Kit’s cat have failed but sex might just be what is needed. With constant attacks by the witches getting stronger and more deadly they are all on the run for their lives and allies are not jumping out of the woodwork to aide them.

Grim is now one of the most wanted men in the world but how does he prove his innocence when it appears the world is against him. Against enemies like, vampires, witches and even some of their own members of the Club where do they go for help. How do you fight against creatures that have excessive speed and power like the vampires or witches who have magic that can put you out with a spell.

Kit’s other half, Kat, wants out but Kit fears turning into a monster and fights her whenever she makes an attempt. The vote for a new president of the Club is supposed to take place but without all the members present hopefully it will be delayed but unfortunately those working on defeating Grim and bringing about a new Club that would partner with Reaper’s might win out in the end. The Maw of Mayhem MC might no longer exist while Grim, Kit, Brick and Deuce are trying to stay alive.

The safety, Kit counted on by Claymore, Grim’s dad and the club’s prior alpha has left her in more danger than when she first came to him for help getting away from her brutal father, Reaper.

So many secrets, surprises, betrayal, lies and nonstop action left me catching my breath time and again.

The sex was hot, very hot and left me breathless. This is a series that I highly recommend. It has everything you could want in a shifter book and MC book.

This series is awesome! Shifters, vampires, witches, and humans are fighting each other for supremacy. Grim and Kit are shifters who have an interesting relationship with their inner beasts and between them as she grows into her role as his queen. There’s so much snark, banter, and drama that I laughed at their antics. Action packed from start to finish with the story ending on another cliffhanger.

Grim fights with Darke- his lion- and Kit tries to become more comfortable with Kat - her cat is a smart aleck- and the weird communication in her head that gets stronger and more clear each day. I love their chemistry and the shifter aspects of their sex life. So intense!.

Darker by AK Nevermore is the second book in the Maw of Mayhem cat shifter motorcycle club romance series. It is the continuation of Grimdarke and Kit’s roller-coaster love story. I’m happy to report that this book solves several of the cliffhangers that were at the end of Grimdarke (Book 1.) Readers will meet Kit’s inner cat, named Kat. Their budding relationship was my favorite part of the book. Despite the confusion over similar names, Kit/Kat have wildly different personalities. They reside in the same body, so readers get more of the internal banter that Nevermore excels in writing. Their spats had me in stitches.

The plot revolves around the vampires of Nevermore’s world, revealing the secrets of Mr. Asorav. In Grimdarke, he was Kit’s employer before she knew she was a shifter. In Darker, we learn how deep their connection goes. He helps our cat shifters escape the wrath of the witches with the adventure and twists (including a sewer system chase with monsters) of an exciting urban fantasy novel.

I loved the vampire politics and the different types of vampire powers assigned by caste. The focus on the larger world allows the reader to understand the context of some of the rivalries built in Grimdarke. I hope Book 3 explores these further and brings them into the Mayhem Maw club dynamics. What I missed from Book 1 was the banter between the motorcycle club members and the resolution of the problems within the club. This book doesn’t have scenes in the clubhouse, on bikes, or within their various businesses. There are unanswered questions in these areas that I hope are revisited in the next book.

The cliffhangers resolved are the emergence of Kat within Kit and the claiming of the mates. This book is very spicy, much more than Grimdarke. I loved watching Kat and Darke convincing their human selves to hurry the relationship along. With Kat stuck inside Kit, the female’s frustration lent itself to hilarious banter.

Overall, I highly recommend Darker to paranormal romance and spicy urban fantasy readers. While the motorcycle club makes this series unique, it is not explored in this book. I can’t wait for the focus to narrow to the club in the next book.

This was my first shifter MC romance and it was mindblowing knowing this spin of MC books exists! I've obviously lived under a rock for a while lol.

I loved Darke and Kit as the main MMC and FMC. The inner voices throughout the story really helped me to grasp the character's train of thinking and thought to process well and helped me to get pulled more into the storyline. The interactions between the characters had me laughing hard! They were all sarcastic at some points, no filters with comments and said whatever came to their mind at the moment. I loved the storyline, the twists, the spice and everything with this MC novel! I will now be going down the Shifter MC romance rabbit hole! Thank you for an amazing read A.K Nevermore!

Really, there's everything going on in here ;D The chemistry between Kit and Grim continues to be smoking hot and I love the sass of Kit's shifter half, Kat. So fun! I will say this is a rather intense series, filled with all kinds of supernatural peeps and a fab balance between the plot and the spice. Definitely recommend :D

I enjoyed this book! There is a lot of spice and entertaining banter between the characters! It's rare that we see cat shifters get some love. I'm excited to see more from these characters especially Kit/Kat. Seeing how their relationship changes will be a nice coming of age type deal. I'd recommend this book to others for sure!

A great second book to what will be a great series. Nevermore never stops amazing me with her snarky wit and great story plots. Vampires, witches and shifters come together to make this yet another must read. I can’t wait to see where Kit and Grim and their beasties end up next in the hunt for Kit’s Dad and the Alpha spot of Mayhem. Keep them coming Nevermore

This is the second installment in the “Maw of Mayhem MC” saga. Kit and Grim’s lives, as well as the MC, are in even more chaos and the vampires are at the gate. Kit and Asorav’s connection is explored, and questions are explained. The action, drama, and suspense are explosive, leading to the next installment.

Darker continues where Grimdarke ended. I must say I really enjoyed where the author steered this novel. There is more world-building and a deeper look into the war between the various paranormal societies. And poor Grim is public enemy number one.
