*** This book is set in the same world as The Pet Project, and like the first Pet Project book, this is not a romance. This story is less of a ‘this is not a romance’ than that one. It’s intended for adult readers only. If you have triggers, pass on this one.
Holy crap I had no idea what kind of adventure I was getting myself into when I saw Amanda Milo had a new release. When I read the summary that it was going to have even less romance than The Pet Project (one of my secretly beloved series), I was kinda meh about it.
Four hours and half an empty tissue box later, I shouldn’t have doubted her. (She was honest about the romance-lite-ness of the book, but she got me with the world building and character development—SO good!)
I’m so glad I purchased this one. I might need to go read the cowboy and donkey story for my book hangover.
I don’t even know how to put this book into words. This book was spiritually upsetting to me. I know it says quite plainly that this is not a romance but I thought “surely with her being a romance author we’ll at least get some romance vibes” nae nae. This is the most tragic story I think I’ve read in a while. Literally no one wins (besides maybe Jacob). I will be giving out spoilers for this point forward because I always like to know except what I’m diving into, and when I looked for reviews on this book everyone wanted to keep things spoiler free. We start off this book from the point of view of a mad scientist. He created hybrids using humans, his own dna and dna of animals. He comments about how smart they are but extremely viscous. When he looks down at them from his window they tell him they’re starving. But alas he could care less, he says “we have passengers coming aboard (they’re floating space ship) you love to eat Passangers” when one gets to close to the window for comfort he beats it down (where it falls and presumably dies). He then hails a ship containing two bird aliens and two humans (brandy and Jacob) Jacob’s is trying to protect brandy as best he can when one of the bird men wake up and try and talk with he mad scientist. Who explains he fed his friend to his experiments and he would feed him to them as well if he didn’t play his game. He wants to hunt him. He allows Jacob to go as well with the promise if they survive three days they’ll be set free. For two days Jacob is the one who keeps them alive with his cunning and wits. When things look bleak bird man takes over and saves the day (with his strength), killing the mad scientist and his experiments that have been hunting them. Now for the tragic part we get brandys POV. She was raped by the most soft spoken one. Although she didn’t consent we can see his compassion for her, his care and loving her the only way he knows how (he was raised in a lab, staved and beaten literally his entire life) she feels sorry for him and begins to care for him. They are basically people who did what they could to survive and she’s realizing they’re not bad but simply mistreated, and a slave to there nature.Day two comes around and her keeper and Jacob are here to save her. She pleads with the hybrids not to hurt Jacob. And in the end they are killed without putting up a fight at all.(they want the suffering to stop) I cried real tears. Brandy got raped and has a hybrid baby. But she’s sad about the loss of the hybrids and there tragic situation. Keeper is basically traumatized by what he went through but still refuses to acknowledge humans are people and not animals. And Jacob. Well he’s the only one who didn’t lose anything. But those poor hybrids, what a sad tale.

His could have been a great romance but instead it was incredibly sad. I really liked the other books in this series but can’t say the same about this one. I know, I was warned that it was dark and not a romance. It was well written as always, but did you have to make me desperately want them to have a happy ending after their horrific life then not get it! I’m sad. But I’m glad to see another Amanda Milo book.
Amanda Milo retells an old story with new flair and sets it in her awesome Pet world. I love how she can tell a story with such humor and deep feelings at the same time. Well worth your time to enjoy, but beware if you are looking for a romance; this is not your book. Please be sure to read the trigger warning as well.
I was so thrilled to come upon a new Amanda Milo book after so long!!! I've been checking every month or so since before the pandemic. After this I'm off to reading her other new book, Jonahkoda? I don't think that's quite right, but close enough. Maybe I'll reread the rest of the series first. Can't wait!!! Amanda Milo writes about the most bizarre creatures, and somehow makes them relatable, and even loveable. That being said, she certainly created an irredeemable baddy in this book. I almost wish she had prolonged his ending. By the way, if you brave those extra chapters, have a box of tissues nearby just in case. I needed them. Dear Amanda, I wish you had gone with the softer ending! But, the story was amazing, as expected. I absolutely love the Pet Project series, in fact I just recently reread it a few months ago, so I was thrilled to see that this book was set in the same universe. I wish there had been a second epilogue telling what happened after the shocking reveal. I won't say more, because spoilers, but Ms. Milo, if you read this, I'd like some more please! The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because I would have liked that little bit more, but it was close. If I could've given 4.9 stars, that would've been perfect. LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this book! Definitely recommend!
What's the difference between a good author and an incredibly gifted author?
A good author gives you exactly what you want which generates those warm feelings so endemic in romance. A contented sigh and happy smile before you move on with your day.
An insanely talented author can take you through the bowels of hell kicking and screaming because you are feeling more than those warm happy notes you expected. The amazing thing is that you, as the reader, can put the book down at any moment. It's your choice to follow her characters into the darkness with a possessed flashlight, squeaky shoes, and a known danger(an example not a spoiler).
What's more the good author can write a villain we can all hate. A talented author can write the antihero in such a way that you cry at the end when said antihero dies. It's easy to acknowledge something is bad. It's harder to make the reader realize that someone bad never had an opportunity to learn good or be more than the monster they were bred to be.
Hats off to you, Amanda Milo. I couldn't put it down. The milder revival of Vaughn-esque quips from the bonus story in "JoAyyn" was so needed in this emotional rollercoaster.
This book is very reminiscent of R. Lee Smith's "Last Hour of Gann" and "Olivia" as it's considerably more erotic horror than her normal offerings to readers. She and the reviews clearly announce that this is NOT her normal plot or character.
It was hard as the reader to accept some of these things because we hate the idea that bad things can happen even if you fight and do everything right in your life according to your belief system. Sometimes we are not saved from horror and pain. But, we can move past those things to find a better place.
Part of me finds comfort in the idea that though someone may commit the most grievous of acts against another being, there's still the possibility that with time the survivor can see that the aggressor is not completely evil or bad in all cases. Some, sure... nothing much I can appreciate in the main antagonist except he didn't kill all of the characters outright.
Even the characters we think of as "good" aren't all purely good just because they are being pursued by the villain. Brandy's keeper is a gray character that thinks nothing of death matches and admits to hitting Brandy. Weet-Gnee seems like a "good" character but he thinks nothing of taking Brandy and Jacob's potential children from the family as nothing less than something deserved due to friendship with her Keeper, a thing that he feels entitled to own. While I like Jacob as the real hero of the book, even he refuses to listen to Brandy when it comes to sparing the mutants. She wasn't being physically harmed but he didn't stop to listen.
What's the difference between a good author and an insanely talented author? I will enjoy a book by a good author and set it aside, easily enjoyed but just as quickly fading into a sea of similar stories.
A book from an insanely talented author makes me think and leads to long discussions of plots, characters, morality, and life with my husband(who is usually thoroughly confused why my romance addiction has led me astray and why he has to suffer for it). This one will be with me for a long time. Because even someone who does the worst things can make the right choice in the end. Even if it's against all instincts and training, sometimes death is an acceptable mercy. It hurt, Amanda Milo...there are Kleenex and sad looks, but it was a beautiful and honorable death for beings that were allowed so little beauty and honor in their life.
Now I have a crying headache. This is such a rough book to read in places. Absolutely worth it if you can make it through, but I also hope readers are going to get more of the Pet Project world. I would absolutely buy an expanded version of the story of Vaughn/Dianne/Tierney/Brent/Brent's mystery mate.... maybe an expanded version of the original story and then a bonus of Brent's story in the same book. I would buy more from JoAyyn's timeframe in the world... maybe Chithwit and Thargo's story...or JoAyyn's children making strides proving some sentience. And then if I am brutally honest about my wishlist: second and third books from "Sister Wife for the Orc"(and any other Orcs you dream up, please Ma'am may I have another?!), Mandy and the Catman, more Nairiths (please and thank you), Laura and her mate, and a return to Venys.
Sure, we can't always get what we want, but an author doesn't know what we want next if we don't ask.
I've read alot of Amanda's work and liked ALL of them, so I was pleased to come across another book set in the Pet Project universe. And while I was warned that it was not romance as with the others, in my opinion aren't romances either, but did have some dark elements and morally disturbing scenes, the ending I could've done without. In my opinion there were no winners.
The first half of the book which has its own ending in a way, I was satisfied, they escaped and went on with their lives. However, the second half is where I questioned my 'acceptance' to the demise of the experimented creatures. Surprisingly, I can overlook humans being treated as pets, though, they clearly portray the ability to understand their alien Keepers speech, respond and display their intelligence no true animal is capable of.
The second half opened my eyes to the other side of the coin, those 'creatures' can speak, they created their own, burial rites, developing a sense of a higher power, so now they appear more human while not having human interactions. Then to top it off we're informed that one of their kind was able to escape maybe even have gotten a happily ever after. I would have been fine NOT knowing their thoughts, feelings, their defeat and hopelessness even at some point their hope.
Maybe leaving them as a villain would have been more of a mercy.

This is not a romance, this is not a happy ending type story.. this is brutal. But, also so compelling.
I was warned by the author, who i am well acquainted, that this isn’t like any of her other books. There would be no true HEA. But I know her, I love everyone of her books, and her Pets in Space was one that holds a permanent spot on my mind. This books will now sit next to it as an addition.
It was so well written. I read it in nearly one sitting only having to stop due to work. it’s fast paced, and easy to follow. I also really enjoy that there are translations of I can’t fully figure it out on my own. There is rape in the book, so be forewarned warned, but written in a way that is well thought out and explained from both parties. while it doesn’t end with a HEA, the ending is complete without ruining it. I don’t feel like I’m left hanging but maybe a bit bereaved is a good way to think of it.
So yeah. Great book, but not in the normal ways one would categorize it. I would still highly recommend.
The layout of the story is set up to have just an incredible, emotional ending. Halfway through I was thinking, yeah this is nice probably a solid 4 stars. I finished the book almost crying and did cry when I told my cousin about it.
If you're deciding between Jonohkada and The Most Dangerous Game to get back into Amanda Milo, personally I'm glad I started here to have something more lighthearted afterwards. Honestly, you can't go wrong reading anything Amanda Milo tho.
Excellent story and the cliff notes were really helpful! I loved the adventure and how this was portrayed. The ending was actually very good and the extra was very sad about what happened to Brandy during that time frame but also for all the characters involved. You don't have to read the extra to understand the ending. I will be looking out for more stories by this Author :)
As always the wrote manages to break your heart, meld it back and make you believe in the power of redemption. Redemption of self. No matter what you can heal. You can hope. You can survive and thrive again. Also she will do all of this while making you laugh, gasp and do the blank look up away from your book on shock of oh no she didn’t before you keep reading. All of her books will drop you in some darkness before helping you to the light. I love this author.
If you loved the pet project series, this follows along the same lines. This was soo good. Love how the aliens never quite understood what the humans were saying. Lots of action. And that epilogue!!! EMOTIONAL!! I was crying. Check your triggers, the author does remind you and forewarn you.
First off, section 1 is a great homage to the original, just with an Island of Dr. Moreau twist. Part 2 might as well be Fay Wray's terrible, no good, very bad day. It's a fantastic read, and also fantastically dark so be warned. Absolutely not a romance.
Omg. I was waiting for gore and crap but not this kind of crying. Geez. Ok so I don’t have many triggers but good lord. I wouldn’t say this was triggering. Someone needed to tell me I was gonna ball my eyeballs out.
This was definitely different but so good. The frustration levels felt through every word, the pain, fear. So good. Thank you for taking a chance and writing something so raw.
I haven't cried so hard in a very long time, very brutal and very dark book. No romance and please read the trigger warnings. Loved it, would I read it again? No my heart can only take so much...
I enjoyed how this got split up. The ending was something different from this type of books, but I enjoyed getting my heartstrings pulled. I've enjoyed all of Amanda's books so far :) It's not all about the hard pounding!
I liked the story but sometimes got lost in I wanted to read it faster it took a hole day but I couldn’t put it down the was a little sad but the story was good
